Since the 1960s, Interstate 787 has separated the city of Albany from its Hudson River waterfront. What if the massive elevated highway, with all its noodley ramps, moved underground? Or what if it became a ground-level parkway with traffic lights and crosswalks? Those are two of the proposals the New York State Department of Transportation is floating to remake the city's main artery, whose current maintenance costs are in some cases more expensive than the proposals to completely raze it. Times Union columnist Chris Churchill has been talking about what changing the highway might do for New York's capital city for years, and joins us to talk about what he thinks of the new proposals. Also on this episode, Times Union Hudson Valley writer David Levine talks about the life and death of Prohibition-era gangster Legs Diamond, who was murdered 93 years ago this month. When Caitlin Clark was taking a shot against LSU at the end of Iowa's Elite Eight game in Albany, Rebecca Lobo was taking a shot at Albany. During the ESPN broadcast, the former WNBA and UConn star joked that there was nothing to do in New York's Capital City. The hometown crowd was not thrilled with her remarks and took to social media en masse to protest. But Times Union's Chris Churchill is wondering, is Lobo actually wrong? He joins us on this episode of “The Eagle” to explain. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We have an Ironreads for you this week, courtesy of the Times Union's Chris Churchill. Stop letting Andrew Cuomo live rent free in your head! The J6 hearings aren't convincing swing state republicans to switch teams, and are in fact further entrenching both sides. The Fed has decided that workers have had it too good for too long and need some disciplining. A bitcoin mine in the Finger Lakes has everybody pissed off–will Kathy care? Gilded Age is set to return to the Capital District, and David has some choice words for Julian Fellows and the inaccurate historical representation of streets in 1882. New York's vaccine mandate for most healthcare workers took effect this week, forcing hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities statewide to put workers on unpaid leave with a single directive: get vaccinated, or lose your job. It has spawned several lawsuits, including one that seeks to exclude those who claim religious exemption. In the Capital Region, providers including Albany Medical Center, St. Peter's Health Partners and Ellis Medicine have suspended hundreds of workers, exacerbating existing staffing shortages. On this episode of The Eagle, health reporter Bethany Bump explains how area hospitals are dealing with the mandate, and the impact it will have on the region. Also, columnist Chris Churchill weighs in on two of the region's most contentious congressional races, and Editor-in-Chief Casey Seiler talks about the death of Commander Cody (a.k.a. George Frayne) and the arena formerly known as the Times Union Center.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 24, 2021 is: hobnob HAHB-nahb verb Hobnob means "to come or be together as friends." // Local business owners hobnobbed at the fundraiser. // The entertainment columnist learns about the latest gossip by hobnobbing with celebrities. See the entry > Examples: "Does declaring affection for Tanglewood, the iconic venue in the Berkshires, make me seem like a self-important muckety-muck eager to hobnob with elites from Boston and Manhattan? Well, so be it." — Chris Churchill, The Times-Union (Albany, New York), 25 July 2021 Did you know? In William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Sir Toby Belch warned Viola (who was disguised as a man) that Sir Andrew wanted to duel. "Hob, nob is his word," said Sir Toby, using "hob, nob" to mean something like "hit or miss." Sir Toby's term is probably an alteration of "hab nab," a phrase that meant "to have or not have, however it may turn out." After Shakespeare's day, hob and nob was used in the phrases "to drink hob or nob" and "to drink hobnob," which meant "to drink alternately to each other." Since "drinking hobnob" was generally done among friends, hobnob came to refer to congenial social interaction.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon sparred over corruption, their tax disclosures and a handful of progressive issues during the lone Democratic gubernatorial debate on Wednesday. The hour-long, one-on-one matchup at Hofstra University on Long Island was a contentious affair that often devolved into personal attacks, allegations of lying and canned one-liners. Nixon sought to score a knockout punch that would elevate her outsider campaign and Cuomo played defense from a position of strength in the polls. Both candidates expressed support, at least in principle, for a liberal wish list in New York that includes legalized marijuana, single-payer health and campaign finance reform. Times Union columnist Chris Churchill joined the podcast to assess what the debate means for the race, weighed in on whether you're still a person if you filed taxes as a corporation and lamented the lack of love for upstate New York from the moderators.

Today’s guest is Nate Herman director, writer, musician, artist, and fine human. Nate was my director at Second City where he midwifed the show with the longest name of any Second City show ever…I think. ``The Heliotrope Players` Production of Thornton Wilder`s American Classic, `Our Town,` as Directed by d`Eric Blakemore, or “Cash Stations of the Cross.” Nate has written for Saturday Night Live where he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy. He’s an alum of the The Second City, wrote for The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Nate performed and wrote on National Lampoon’s classic comedy “Lemmings.” Nate’s band, Wilderness Road, recorded for both Columbia Records and Warner/Reprise. Not too shabby.
