The new coffee I'm drinking is from Four Sigmatic. I'm really picky about my coffee, it's got to be bold, not watery. And I've been really happy with Four Sigmatic. Here's the difference from other coffees, it includes mushrooms, which I know sounds bizarre. I will admit I was hesitant, but you get health benefits and don't taste it. They taught me about EpiSign which is a novel clinically validated test that analyzes methylation. I just learned that since this episode in 2021, verison 4 of EpiSign has been released which has expanded to include over 70 conditions. If you are attending ACMG this month stop by booth 607 to chat with Greenwood Genetics. In the meantime brush up on your epigenetics by listening to Episode #145 of DNA Today and visit GreenwoodGeneticCenter. When Layla's Mom Tasha had an emergency hysterectomy, Dad Nathan told her he was open to adoption as she went into surgery. They started looking into agencies during her recovery and decided to adopt from China because they allowed people to take their adopted child with them on their first visit to the country. The adoption agency gave them a checklist to pick traits they would like to see in their future kiddo. Tasha and Nathan agreed that if this was a child they conceived together, they would not put limitations on keeping the baby, so they checked every box on the list. They opened the file with Layla's picture, and knew she was meant to be their daughter—regardless of her story—so they began the process of trying to match with her. From the beginning of the adoption process to when they traveled to China to get Layla, it was about a year. Layla had just turned one when they flew over to bring her home. Two hours after landing, the orphanage director handed Layla to Tasha and Nathan with just the clothes on her back. No bottle. No shoes. She had never been fed anything other than rice. They signed the papers, and she was theirs just like that. CHOA doctors said they were shocked she was able to walk after having her back open for 8 weeks. They eventually learned that Layla needed a catheter at home. Spina bifida led to her having no feeling in her bladder or bowels so she didn't know when to go. When she was 4 years old, she had a 14-hour surgery where her urologist used her appendix to create a channel from her bladder to her belly button. Then he put a port in to empty her bowels and closed off the normal passageways of the bladder and bowels. Layla catheterizes herself every 3 hours through her belly button and hooks up an IV bag to her port to flush her bowels out every night. She has surgery once a year to change out the ports, and checkups at CHOA every 6 months. Tasha also has breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy last May and had a second surgery in November. Layla started doing the catheter herself during this time. 2022 BBA kiddo Rue goes to the school Tasha teaches at. They connected with 2019 BBA kid Abby Johnson's mom on Spina Bifida social media groups. They learned about BBA from a pediatrician they've been going to forever. One of the nurses supports BBA and told them they would be perfect for it so they applied! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This kid is gonna fit right into the Bert's Big Adventure fam! He loves pranking people and even fake poo! We'll introduce you to 9 year old Korbin! When the team at The Justin Landis Group heard about Korbin and his family, they knew we had to step in and help. That's why the Justin Landis Group is covering their payments for the entire year! Check what's in the big box… Korbin returned home on a Sunday from a weekend at his dad's and could barely walk because he said that his “feet hurt.” Alicia took his shoes off and both of his feet were swollen. The next morning while Korbin was having testing, a doctor came in and said I'm sure it's XYZ and we'll just treat it with Tylenol, and he'll go home today. At 7:56 p.m., another doctor walked through the door and told Alicia, I'm sorry, but the results came back positive. She just kept hearing I'm sorry and blah, blah, blah, but she was trying to hold it together and not cry in front of Korbin. The next morning Korbin got his port or as they call it, his “Hulk Button.” In April, the family had a setback. Korbin had a painful spot on his leg, but they were unable to biopsy it. He had a feeding tube put in place. He was having a hard time waking up. Korbin wasn't responding to anything they were doing, so chemo was stopped. Turns out he had a fungal infection in his lung and that was causing his health to decline. Korbin stayed at CHOA for a total of 53 days. He is still on the fungal medication because the infection is ongoing. He has also been suffering both mini and full seizures as a result of neurotoxicity. Learn more about your ad choices. Meet Bert's Big Adventure kid, Payton aka Pjo!In April 2019, Pjo's mom and dad feared something was wrong. His mom, Deidra, got a call from Pjo's school that he had another fever (he was having them frequently), so they took him to Children's for testing. She was in such a fog that Deidre doesn't remember the conversation in the ER that night and can only remember that he was diagnosed with a mass on his spine- Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that forms in certain types of nerve tissue. It most frequently starts from one of the adrenal glands but can also develop in the neck, chest, abdomen, or spine.Pjo immediately started an aggressive round of treatment- including port placement and biopsy, 6 months of chemo, tumor resection, radiation, 2 stem cell transplants, proton radiation, 6 months of immunotherapy (cancer-free three months in!) port removal, and then 3 months on a trial drug to hopefully help prevent relapse.Unfortunately, Pjo relapsed. From February through November of 2021, Pjo started his second full round of aggressive treatment- starting all over again. However, thankfully, he is currently in a CHOA trial maintenance therapy that seems to be going well.Pjo has significant hearing loss, his left eye gets infected easily (because of the radiation), he has asthma and kidney damage because of such rigorous treatment. From Deidra's perspective, COVID has limited access to playrooms, etc. within the hospital and things that used to make it easier/more fun to be there. She also has a lack of time to be with other parents who “get it” because of COVID and being restricted in getting together. Before the start of the pandemic, Payton received Make-A-Wish granting him a Disney Cruise vacation, first-class flights to and from Orlando for his family, and a day spent swimming with dolphins. However, his wish was pushed back several times because of COVID-19 and his immunocompromised state while he was in treatment. Eventually, Payton's family decided it made more sense to swap his wish for a camper so they could enjoy social-distanced family time. When GAMOA heard about this, they really wanted to make magic happen and grant this sweet child his original wish of flying first-class and swimming with the dolphins! Once in Disney, GAMOA is sending a limo to pick up Payton and his family to take them for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Discovery Cove.Discovery Cove is a unique all-inclusive day resort where you and your family will experience exciting animal encounters in a breathtaking tropical atmosphere. Payton and his family will get to snorkel with thousands of tropical fish, float through a relaxing lazy river, meet curious animal ambassadors or sunbathe on white sandy beaches. The family also has an exclusive private cabana for the day- so they can enjoy their day in paradise! The VIP Cabana service includes towel service, snacks, and a mini-fridge! And the best part is, Payton will get “nose to bottlenose” with a new friend during a one-on-one dolphin encounter. The family was living in Columbus, GA, when Rue's mom, Katherine, went in for a routine anatomy scan.During the scan, it was suggested that she visit CHOA for an additional scan. There she was told that what they were seeing on the scan was too complicated for their team and referred to Boston Children's Hospital.Katherine traveled to Boston for an additional ultrasound and possible fetal surgery. The team at Boston Children's Hospital informed Katherine that Rue's condition was too complex for fetal surgery and instead recommend that she deliver there so she could go into surgery immediately. She spent nearly her first two years of life in the hospital, and the family lived in Boston for Rue's first 4 years of life so that she could have the best access to care. Bert's Big Adventure kiddo Kynli and her family are spending so much time at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, they had to move closer to the hospital, which has been a financial strain for the entire family. Let's see if we can help them out here with the help of the Justin Landis Group!Kynli is the youngest of three children who all have PFIC: Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis, a disease that has resulted in liver failure and liver transplants in all three children. Her oldest sister, Kayli, was about 2 months old, when her mom, Kari, returned to work after maternity leave and dropped her off at daycare for her first day. When picking her up, a daycare employee pointed out how yellow she appeared and suggested she visit a doctor. They took Kayli to a liver specialist who diagnosed her with PFIC, which is very rare. At that time, all the doctors were able to tell her was that children with that condition weren't expected to live past 10 years old without a liver transplant. Despite extremely rare odds, her second and third children were diagnosed with the same disease and all three children have had liver transplants and go in for testing monthly.Kari's ex-husband was discharged from the military when they were living in Tacoma, Washington, and he decided to move to Qatar, where he still resides. Since Tacoma had a high cost of living, Kari made the decision to move with the kiddos. She had never lived in Atlanta but settled in Conyers to be close to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. It's hard for the family to get ahead monetarily because the rent keeps increasing, but they have to live close to CHOA and all of the children need to have separate rooms since they frequently have to quarantine. They also don't often appear sick so classmates question why they get special treatment. The Justin Landis Group has helped thousands of clients over the years, and each has come to us with a unique dream. They've helped empty-nesters looking to downsize and young families looking for more space as they grow. Some people hope for a great yard, while others search for a high-rise condo in the heart of the city. For some of our city's most vulnerable, much like Kynli and her family, the dream is a little different. When the team at The Justin Landis Group heard about Kynli and her family, they knew they had to step in and help. That's why the Justin Landis Group is going to gift Kynli and her family 3-months of rent/mortgage payments! They told us "We believe they deserve their dream just as much as anyone else, which is why we are proud to partner with Bert's Big Adventure." Meet Bert's Big Adventure kid, Payton aka Pjo!In April 2019, Pjo's mom and dad feared something was wrong. The signature dolphin swim experience begins with your group meeting a dolphin in one of their crystal clearswimming areas. Next, one of the animal care specialists will teach you all about dolphin habits, behaviors, their incredible communication abilities, and the relationships they build on a daily basis with these incredible animals. Chris and Christy welcome back James Ludemann, Patient Teaching Coordinator and Fertility Preservation Nurse at CHOA, to the podcast, this time to share about the issue of fertility preservation when it comes to pediatric cancer. James starts out by defining fertility and infertility, just as he would in his conversations with patients and their families to make sure everyone is on the same page. He explains why it is important to consider fertility when dealing with childhood cancer since most (but not all) childhood cancer patients will receive at least one treatment that puts them at some risk for fertility issues. James explains how most of the options to preserve fertility before cancer treatment are currently only available to older kids and teenagers who have begun puberty, but how his team will still meet with the families of younger patients who have concerns. He walks Chris and Christy through the steps his team takes to approach families of older kids and teens about the issue of fertility preservation, and relates the importance of asking the young person's permission to have these sometimes awkward—but very important—conversations. James gives a high-level overview of the options available to preserve fertility before treatment has begun, as well as those that are still available even after treatment has concluded. Lastly, they close the conversation by talking about the importance of parents advocating for their child in this area, especially since not all hospitals have a team dedicated to fertility for pediatric cancer patients.
