In 1908, a girl was brutally murdered in a small town in upstate New York. The town was seemingly idyllic, but beneath the surface, it was crawling with prostitution, orgies, deceit, and corruption. It was fueled by a political machine so powerful it could cover up not just one but multiple murders. The truth behind the murder of Hazel Drew was meant to remain unsolvable. In this episode, I dive into the mystery of Hazel Drew, a young woman whose 1908 murder in upstate New York inspired one of television's most haunting mysteries—Twin Peaks. Who was Hazel Drew? Why was she found floating in Teal Pond, and why do the whispers of her story still linger over a century later? But that's not all. I also bring you an original horror story inspired by Hazel's fate—a dark, unsettling tale about a small town where the past refuses to stay buried, and the dead are never truly gone. Her death was labeled a murder. In the weeks that followed the discovery of her body, many suspects were investigated including among others: her recently widowed, and suicidal, uncle William Taylor who lived nearby; a simple-minded 17 year old farm hand named Frank Smith, who fancied Hazel and his friend Rudolph Gunderman, a charcoal peddler, the two of whom had seen her along Taborton Road, near the pond, shortly before she died; and a pair of unknown men seen by a couple driving by, about the time the murder was supposed to have taken place, at the scene - one waiting in a horse drawn runabout, and the other beating around in the bushes near the pond, as if looking for something! What made Hazel's murder all the more mysterious, was that only a few days prior to it, she'd suddenly, and unexpectedly left her job as a domestic at the home of Professor E.R. Cary in Troy, and nobody knew what her intentions were. Also her luggage had been left - checked at the train station. In the end, all the leads the investigators had ran out. A brilliantly researched reinvestigation into the nearly forgotten century-old murder that inspired one of the most seductive mysteries in the history of television and film. In 1908, Hazel Drew was found floating in a pond in Sand Lake, New York, beaten to death. The unsolved murder inspired rumors, speculation, ghost stories, and, almost a century later, the phenomenon of Twin Peaks. Who killed Hazel Drew? Like Laura Palmer, she was a paradox of personalities—a young, beautiful puzzle with secrets. Perhaps the even trickier question is, Who was Hazel Drew? Seeking escape from her poor country roots, Hazel found work as a domestic servant in the notoriously corrupt metropolis of Troy, New York. Fate derailed her plans for reinvention. But the investigation that followed her brutal murder was fraught with red herrings, wild-goose chases, and unreliable witnesses. Did officials really follow the leads? Or did they bury them to protect the guilty? The likely answer is revealed in an absorbing true mystery that's ingeniously reconstructed and every bit as haunting as the cultural obsession it inspired. ‘In a town like Twin Peaks, no one is innocent.' – David Lynch Like a daytime soap opera penned by H.P. Lovecraft, Twin Peaks grabbed the public's imagination. With the brutal murder of 17-year-old homecoming queen Laura Palmer as its catalyst, Twin Peaks exposed the dark, sleazy underworld of small-town life and tore the image of the American dream to shreds. But did you know that Laura Palmer's murder was based by a true story? While Special Agent Dale Cooper enjoyed his slice of Cherry Pie, the world consumed a slice of dystopian Americana, as each week they unravelled Laura Palmer's secret life. On this week's episode we look at the ‘horror behind the horror' of Twin Peaks: The murder of Hazel Drew, whose double life baffled investigators and journalists, inspired Mark Frost and David Lynch to write Twin Peaks and is still the subject of debate – and several documentaries - today. We also explore the occult mythology that inspired Twin Peaks and give you a few behind the scenes facts about the filming of the iconic series. Twenty-year-old Hazel Drew from East Poestenkill, New York, was well-loved by the community that knew her and noted for her beauty and kind nature.  On July 11, 1908, after years of living in nearby Troy as a domestic servant for the wealthy, Hazel’s body was discovered floating in a pond over 10 miles away in the town of Sand Lake.  Despite an intense investigation, the unusual circumstances surrounding Hazel’s death left locals wondering not just who her murderer was but if she was leading a double life. More than 100 years later, Hazel Drew’s unsolved murder has again garnered national attention with the revelation that she was the inspiration for Laura Palmer, whose murder is the central focus of the cult TV crime series Twin Peaks.
