Welcome to episode 10 of The Privileged Man podcast with Sir Andrew Strauss. Straussy was a legendary England Cricket Captain becoming one of only three Englishmen to win the ashes both in England and Australia. I start off the podcast getting in as much cricket trivia as possible before settling into a deeper conversation on how Andrew dealt with the tragically early death of his beloved wife Ruth and the legacy it ultimately and stunningly created through the Ruth Strauss Foundation. Andrew's openness and vulnerability to talk about his grief is remarkably courageous and I'm hugely grateful too him for coming on the podcast and modelling this type of leadership. A burzył z rozmachem. Sir Andrew Dilnot is an economist who believes that statistics hold a key role in lessening inequality and making Britain fairer. He is now the warden of Nuffield College Oxford - a graduate college specialising in the social sciences. Before Nuffield, he was at the Institute for Fiscal Studies where he was the Director of the UK's leading independent economics research institute. A fierce advocate for statistics, he believes that data is at the heart of solving a whole raft of issues whether that's social care, education inequalities or faltering healthcare systems. And the UK's social care system is on a precipice. Two-thirds of people who have used or had contact with social care said they were dissatisfied with the service they had received or witnessed, according to a recent British Social Attitudes survey. And beyond just ‘dissatisfaction' lies damning figures - there were over 165,000 adult social care posts left vacant last year. What can be done? And what can the stats tell us? Season 4 of the We Society Podcast from the Academy of Social Sciences tackles the big questions through a social science lens. Throughout this series, you'll be hearing some of the best ideas to shape the way we live. Hosted by journalist and Academy President Will Hutton, we interview some of Britain's top social scientists and public figures from across the globe to explore their evidence-led solutions to society's most pressing problems. Chris Caldwell introduces esteemed Professor, Sir Andrew Likierman, former Dean of London Business School, for their fascinating Conversation on DECISION MAKING and JUDGEMENT. Sir Andrew is an inspirational speaker, leader and management thinker. He advised Parliamentary Select Committees, was president of the Chartered Institute of Management and had roles at both Barclays Bank and the Bank of England. The complex world of decision making and judgement is many layered and Professor Likierman tells us of his own amazing voyage of discovery. This conversation will uncover the six elements of decision making - six elements that we can all understand and hopefully apply in our own everyday lives as well as in business. “…what struck me is that people talked about the importance of good judgment in making difficult choices and so I became very intrigued by this…” "Would you know that somebody has good judgment when they make a difficult choice, a difficult decision? You know what constitutes good judgment? … how do you know other people have got it if you're going to hire them?…” “...how do you bring everything together of the individual, the situation, the variables involved in a complex choice, what guidance can one give? And I found there was almost nothing written on this. And so intrigued by that, I said, all right, it's a voyage of discovery, and here I go…” “...and my aim, therefore, is to try, in terms of the phrase, stack the cards in one's favour of making a choice…" References: London Business School faculty profile https://www.london.edu/faculty-and-research/faculty-profiles/l/likierman-a Harvard Business Review Article by Sir Andrew Likierman: The Elements of Good Judgement https://hbr.org/2020/01/the-elements-of-good-judgment The scope of the challenge before us is beyond that of any one individual or any one solution. In this episode Clemmie speaks to the English Cricket legend Andrew Strauss about his experience with loss and grief, after losing his wife Ruth Strauss in 2018. He introduces a concept of 'doing death well' which was incredibly important for Ruth before she died. And so they wonder - what would "doing grief well" look like? Andrew says: "it baffles me that it's not more of an open conversation, that there's not more social norms about what grieving is." We couldn't agree more. It's more conversations like this, with national heroes and your next-door neighbour that will crack this subject open so we can create a healthy, open culture about something we will all go through.

The Shackles Are Off - Cricket Podcast produced by England's Barmy Army
The second cricketing knight comes to the podcast to start our new series here on The Shackles Are Off, and what a legend he is too... Sir Andrew Strauss is a giant of the game, and was at the helm for arguably one of the best moments for England in cricketing history. Here he talks 10/11 Ashes (obviously!!), as well as his own cricketing journey, tells a few great tales... and more importantly talks about the upcoming #RedForRuth day, which celebrates and raises money for the Foundation that was set up in memory of his late wife Ruth Strauss. The death of a parent can be one of the most traumatic events experienced by a child in their lifetime. Especially when children are unprepared and unaware of the impending death, this can negatively impact their psychosocial wellbeing. Get involved and help us by spreading the word on social media. We are here to help families facing grief and you can help us, help them. Ready to turn #RedforRuth and for the families that need our support?
Stephen Sackur speaks to Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group and a key figure in the development of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Science has offered up tools to beat the virus - but from vaccine hesitancy to vaccine inequality - are we making the most of them?

My series finale of season 5 is with legend Sir Andrew Strauss. We sat down to chat about Andrew's stellar career, which saw him lead England to Ashes victory. We also chatted about how important it is to put family first. We chatted about the founding of the Ruth Strauss Foundation, following the tragic passing of his late wife to lung cancer. Andrew explained to me the importance of putting family first, and remembering that work and jobs do not define who you are, your relationships with family and friends are what you should cherish. In early 2018, Ruth Strauss, wife of Sir Andrew Strauss, was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers. Ruth died later that same year; she was 46 years old and mother to two children, then aged 10 and 13. In her memory, Sir Andrew set up the Ruth Strauss Foundation (RSF). Ruth’s vision and, therefore, our mission, is to ensure that every family with a child facing the death of a parent has access to professional emotional support to prepare the family for the future. In addition, we are driving the need for more research & collaboration in the fight against non-smoking lung cancers, to which Ruth ultimately lost her life. In this bonus episode of Headstrong, I sat down with Deepa Doshi and Karina Murtagh of the Ruth Strauss Foundation to learn more about why the charity was founded, what important work they do and what we can do as members of the public to do more. Andrew is amongst the most successful and lauded England cricket captains of all time, and one of only three men to lead his country to Ashes Test series wins both home, and away. From a starting position of some disarray, his ability to engender trust and confidence in his England team led them all the way to the world number one ranking. The trust in his technique and ability saw him play 100 Test matches, and amass more than 7000 Test runs with a batting average of more than 40, including 21 centuries. His spell as captain coincided with the managerial stint of Andy Flower, and together they forged a crucial bond of trust in each other, and transformed a disparate band of cricketers into a team of world beaters. In the latter part of his career, his trust in the players was put to the ultimate test by Kevin Pietersen. ......................................... Welcome back to Life Beyond Sport, where this week host Nick Keller is joined by Ashes winning captain Sir Andrew Strauss to discuss love, loss and the three sporting moments that have defined his life.
Episode Notes Viola's lost twin brother, Sebastian, and his friend Antonio journey to Illyria. Viola starts to suspect someone might have feelings for her. Sir Toby, Sir Andrew, Maria, and Feste plan a prank on Olivia's uptight butler Malvolio. For information on this production's cast and crew, visit shakespeareonthelawn.org.
Steve and CSIS Senior Fellow Katherine Bliss enjoined Sir Andrew Witty to help us answer a few fundamental question: what exactly is this new, umbrella coalition, the ACT Accelerator; what is its value, six months after its creation; and what are its true prospects of success in battling hyper-nationalism and enhancing access by low and middle income countries to Covid-19 vaccines, therapies and diagnostics? Along the way, we delved into the significance of the November 21-22 G-20 summit, discussed the finance gap, the prospects of massive vaccine surpluses in the hands of the most wealthy and powerful countries, and China’s participation. Is the door open for the United States to join, belatedly? And what would the special value of that be? Andrew Witty is the Co-Lead of the Access to Covid Tools (ACT) Accelerator and WHO Envoy for Covid-19. Between 2008 and 2017, he was the chief executive officer of GlaxoSmithKline. He is currently president, UnitedHealth Group, and chief executive officer, Optum.
After crashing just outside of Illyria, Viola disguises herself as a man named Cesario to secure a job with Orsino. Orsino sends Cesario to woo Olivia for him. Sir Toby convinces his friend Sir Andrew to stay in town a little longer. For information about this production's cast and crew, visit shakespeareonthelawn.org.

Branch Line to Benceston by Sir Andrew CaldecottBranch Line to Benceston was published in the collection Not Exactly Ghosts in 1947. He turned to writing after retirement from the Malaysian Civil Service, again like many of our ghost story writers, he had a career in the Colonial Civil Service of the British Empire. Sadly, he didn’t live long after retirement and died aged 65. Sir Andrew Caldecott (1884–1951) was born in Kent. He was educated at Uppingham School and at Exeter College, Oxford, where he became an Honorary Fellow in 1948. His father was a clergyman. Spooky. how this happens so much. He had a very distinguished career in the Colonial Service and was Governor of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from 1937 until 1944 (so during the Second World War), and before that Governor of Hong Kong (1935–1937). He also worked in Malaya and Singapore and there is a station named after him in Singapore. He had a lifelong interest in the supernatural and, as is evident from his two volumes of supernatural tales, he was an accomplished writer, but it wasn’t until after his retirement in 1944 that he published his first volume of ghost stories. Not Exactly Ghosts was published in 1947 by Edward Arnold & Co. It contains twelve tales. Interestingly, features of Caldecott’s own interests, such as playing the piano, crop up in his stories and I suppose that is true for most writers, hence my frequent mentions of Hawkwind. In ‘Branch Line to Benceston’, Adrian Frent, a railway enthusiast and herbalist, is the first tenant of ‘Brentside’, the newly-built house next to the narrator’s own house in Brensham. Frent is a partner in a firm of music publishers, but he hates the other partner with a vengeance, feeling that the man has messed up his life stence since they were boys. He wishes his partner dead, and then when he does die, things turn weird. But the story is not exactly a ghost story. C aldecott does a couple of things wonderfully. Firstly; this story is a portrait of Metroland, the area outside London that was developed in the first half of the twentieth century with the benefit of faster rail connections to allow the middle classes, to have the benefits of living in a suburbia that appeared and was sold as being the English countryside, while still able to travel easily into London to their day jobs. Vast swathes of the Home Counties were gobbled up and railways proliferated. John Betjeman, the English poet laureate captured all of this in his film entitled: Metroland and much of his poetry is set in this half-and-half land bathed in the sunlight of the English dream. The second thing I think Caldecott does well is the set up of the story. The death of the Dachshunds and the herbalism and poison seems to be a red-herring. Though giving his great enemy Paul Saxon one of the tinctures he makes reminds Frent of his wish to kill Paul, and thus his sin, he does not actually poison the man. This is a misdirection, I think: a red herring. However, the real set-up is the trap-door. We have already been told how Frent tends to go off half-cocked, but after a brief mention of this trap-door, Caldecott leaves it. This is subtle and I didn’t get that until the end. Caldecott is a great wit and his comment about the coroner’s view that these houses are death-traps being ignored as normal with coroner’s comments reflects his own professional experience, I am sure, and is a bit of a joke because we are going to ignore this clue too, at least I did. Caldecott even flags this clue up saying he has recorded it for a reason that will become clear later. This to me is a great example of burying the obvious, and doing it well. The picture of Frent’s fire escape being one you swarm down a rope on, hand over hand, like you did at prep school is hilarious and worthy of P G Wodehouse or Evelyn Waugh. I began to suspect something about the clock when it was mentioned it was set five minutes fast. Caldecott sets up all the railway stuff too with the... Support this podcast

“Winning is not a good thing to think of as a goal,” says former England cricket captain Sir Andrew Strauss. “Look,” he clarifies, “you have to win - in high performance sport you can’t go too long without winning and remain in position. Winning has to be a focus - but it’s got to be part of something bigger.” Strauss, who chairs the ECB cricket committee, is speaking of the moment that his England team, in 2011, reached No1 in the ICC Test team world rankings and the accompanying sense of anticlimax. It is an issue he discusses during this episode of At Home With Leaders with co-hosts Matthew Stone, Leaders’ Senior Product Manager, and sports psychologist and consultant Michael Caulfield, whose clients include Brentford FC, Northampton Saints RFC and Hampshire CCC. Strauss also chats about: - His time as Director of Cricket at the ECB between 2015 and 2018 [15:30]; - Why leadership can be lonely [26:30]; - Coping with criticism and media scrutiny [28:00]; - Setting up the Ruth Strauss Foundation in honour of his late wife, whom he lost to lung cancer [33:00]. Austin Tichenor is directing Twelfth Night at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company this fall, and it turns out he's almost the only one at Cincy Shakes or the RSC who's never worked on it before! Fortunately, RSC members Teddy Spencer, Jerry Kernion, and Dominic Conti, plus Chicago actress and professor of acting at Northwestern University Cindy Gold, are able to give him tips and insights into the play and its characters because they've all done Twelfth Night multiple times. Featuring discussions of the text, Shakespeare's authorial intent, the driving force that is Maria, the difficulty of Malvolio, spectacular insight into Sir Toby Belch, the value of dumb shows and fencing, the way to dress Sir Andrew, excellent high-kicking, and the wonder of having a well-oiled Orsino. (Length 23:47)
Sir Andrew Wood, the man who John McCain admits alerted him to the existence of the Steele Dossier during a secret meeting at a security conference in Canada, once said "I like to break up countries," during a 2015 panel discussion on how to stop what is described as "the increasing Russian threat to the international order." While the media has portrayed Sir Andrew Wood as little more than a middle man in the Russian Dossier saga, the powerful British diplomat and associate fellow of the Russia and Eurasia programme at London's Chatham House seems to have played a much bigger role. In fact, Wood's background, his long history of opposition to Russia, and his role in the story of the Steele dossier, makes it difficult not to question the entire narrative we've been told about Russian interference, Russian meddling, Russian collusion, or whatever they're calling it today. At the very least, one wonders why the media has paid such little attention to a man who is such a central figure in the Russian saga. In today's episode of the Propaganda Report podcast, we introduce you to Sir Andrew Wood and we analyze a June 2015 Chatham House report titled "The Russian Challenge" as well as statements made by Sir Andrew during a July 2015 panel discussion at The Center for Strategic and International Studies titled, "The Russian Challenge:" Europe's Future Policy Course Towards Russia Considered FOR SHOW NOTES, INCLUDING VIDEO AND ARTICLES LINKS, VISIT https://propagandareportdaily.com/ep-97-i-like-to-break-up-countries-sir-andrew-wood-the-man-who-made-sure-mccain-got-the-steele-dossier-podcast/
