Send us a Text Message. Jethro Tull is one of the stranger turns taken by rock music over more than 50 years. Mick and Jeff look back at some of the band's best work, and, maybe, some of their strangest. The “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is Queen II, a sensational album released the year before Queen took over the world! Both Mick & Jeff love it! Jeff takes a look at what AI is doing to music. We're not worried, because, as Joe Walsh says, AI can't even trash a hotel room! While he's at it, he then looks at who is “knocking on Heaven's door” this month. Yet another very full episode! Music & Conversation: The Podcast of English Composer Andrew Downes
Paula interviews world-renowned jazz guitarist and bassist, Fred Thelonius Baker. Fred was a student at Birmingham School of Music (now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) from 1979, and studied composition with Andrew Downes. Andrew went on to invite Fred to teach at Birmingham Conservatoire in 1989, which led to Fred being a major part of Andrew's new School of Composition and Creative Studies from the early 90s. Fred has been a permanent teacher/lecturer in accoustic and bass guitar there ever since. In the mid 90s, Andrew composed his Concerto for Guitar, Electric Bass Guitar and Strings for Fred playing Electric Bass with Simon Dinnigan playing Acoustic Guitar. They recorded it for CD in 1999 with string players from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Fred and Simon also arranged Downes' Piano Sonatina, Movement 2 for Electric Bass and Acoustic Guitar and also recorded this for the CD. All of these works are played throughout the episode. More information on the works and the CD can be found here: https://www.andrewdownes.com/Soloists-with-Orchestra.html#GUITARSTRINGS Fred Thelonious Baker is a Jazz guitarist and bassist from the English village of Tibshelf, Derbyshire. Born in 1960, Fred was given a ukulele when he was four by his father. Indeed, Fred's parents were a major influence in the beginning of his musical journey. A year later, he was given his first guitar and went on to learn the Classical guitar. During his mid-teens, Fred also began an interest in the bass guitar, an instrument with which he has since become synonymous. After studying at Chesterfield College, Fred went on to study at Birmingham School of Music (now Conservatoire) where he gained a GBSM and ABSM in teaching and performance. Around this time, at the invitation of Sir John Dankworth and Cleo Laine, Fred began teaching at Wavendon All Music Summer School. Since then, Fred has taught and given masterclasses at many universities, music colleges and music Summer schools including Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Berkeley College of Music, USA, St Petersburg Conservatory, Russia, London Brunel, Huddersfield, Sheffield, and Derby Universities. Since 1989, he has been a permanent teacher/lecturer in acoustic and bass guitar at Birmingham Conservatoire. There are debates galore about who is the best singer, guitarist, drummer, etc., in the Rock genre, but perhaps we can all agree that the greatest Rock flautist would be Ian Anderson. The trio of Anderson (vocals, guitar, flute), Jeffrey Hammond (bass) and John Evan (keyboards, initially drums) began playing together in the 60's, and while only Anderson would be present from that original trio when the band Jethro Tull was formed in 1967, all three would be back together along with Martin Barre (guitar) and Clive Bunker (percussion) for their fourth studio album, Aqualung. The band took the name Jethro Tull by default. They performed under a number of names, but were going by “Jethro Tull,” the name of an 18th century agriculturist, when a club manager decided he liked the group enough to invite them for a return engagement.Aqualung would be the breakout album for the band and would become one of the top albums in Rock history. They maintain their folk and blues roots, but would take a turn towards a more progressive direction here. The album paints pictures of different people, culture, hypocrisy, and the disconnect between organized religion and true spirituality. It is pro-God, and anti-religion.We hope you enjoy this breakout prog-rock masterpiece. Locomotive BreathThis song starts in a classic mode, but moves into a driving rock rhythm reminiscent of a train and with Anderson's distinctive flute. It is one of the early back-to-nature songs, describing technology and markets as a runaway train destroying everything in its path Hymn 43Ian Anderson is the face, songwriter and creator of Jethro Tull. This deeper cut reflects Anderson's spirituality. The song is about people who use Jesus as a means to accomplish their goals. "If Jesus saves, he'd better save himself." Cross Eyed MaryThis is a better known song which starts with an introductory flute and moves into a stronger rock bent afterwards. This track is a portrait of a schoolgirl prostitute who prefers older men to her classmates. AqualungThe best known epic from the album describes the life and death of a homeless man. There is a connection between this song and Cross Eyed Mary, as the line “eyeing little girls with bad intent” references Mary. “Salvation a la mode, and a cup of tea.” Aqualung refers to the way the homeless man breathes with a rattling breath as he dies. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Beverly Hillbillies” by Lester Flatts & Earl ScruggsAfter a 9-year run, this series that would become a feature of weekday afternoon reruns completed its time on the prime time networks during this month. STAFF PICKS:I Feel The Earth Move by Carole KingBruce brings us the lead single from King's masterpiece “Tapestry,” which was released in February of 1971. Singer-songwriter Carole King would win 4 Grammy's for Tapestry in 1972, including Album of the Year, and would eventually sell over 25 million copies worldwide. Free by ChicagoRob brings us this funky, horn-led song from Chicago III, released in this month. This was a double album, as were their first and second albums. Amos Moses by Jerry ReedBrian's staff pick takes us down to the swamps of Louisiana courtesy of musical storyteller Jerry Reed. Amos Moses was a one armed Cajun alligator poacher. This ditty made it to number 8 on the charts.Give It To Me by The MobWayne takes us to the original Chicago horn section. While more of a local group to Chicago and Las Vegas, The Mob inspired a number of horn-driven bands including Chicago. They wrote a number of songs for other singers and groups. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Cool Aid by Paul Humphrey & His Cool Aid ChemistsThis piece by jazz drummer Paul Humphrey made it to #29 on the hit list.
Jethro Tull special with Ian Anderson in conversation with David Eastaugh Jethro Tull are a British rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire, in 1967. Initially playing blues rock and jazz fusion, the band later developed their sound to incorporate elements of hard rock and folk rock to forge a progressive rock signature. The band is led by vocalist/flautist/guitarist Ian Anderson, and has featured a revolving door of lineups through the years including significant members such as guitarists Mick Abrahams and Martin Barre, keyboardist John Evan, drummers Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow, and Doane Perry, and bassists Glenn Cornick, Jeffrey Hammond, John Glascock, and Dave Pegg. The group first achieved commercial success in 1969, with the folk-tinged blues album Stand Up, which reached No. 1 in the UK, and they toured regularly in the UK and the US. Their musical style shifted in the direction of progressive rock with the albums Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972) and A Passion Play (1973), and shifted again to hard rock mixed with folk rock with Songs from the Wood (1977) and Heavy Horses (1978). After an excursion into electronic rock in the early-to-mid 1980s, the band won its first and only Grammy Award with the 1987 album Crest of a Knave. Jethro Tull have sold an estimated 60 million albums worldwide, with 11 gold and five platinum albums among them. They have been described by Rolling Stoneas "one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive rock bands". The last works as a group to contain new material were released in 2003, though the band continued to tour until 2011. Anderson said Jethro Tull were finished in 2014; however, in September 2017 Anderson announced plans for a tour to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the band's first album This Was, and then record a new studio album in 2018. The current band line-up includes musicians who have been members of Anderson's solo band since 2012. The band began a world tour on 1 March 2018.
