Independent radio stations across the country say a dramatic hike in broadcasting fees has sent shockwaves through the sector. They're calling on Media Minister Patrick O'Donovan to intervene, over a 39 percent increase in the broadcast Levy used to fund the independent regulator 'Comisiún na Meán'. The Independent Broadcasters of Ireland say it represents a hike of tens of thousands of euro for stations already battling tight margins. David has had an extraordinary life, starting with his career as a soldier, serving in Germany and the UK from mid to late 90s. But that was just the beginning.After leaving the military, David embarked on a new adventure as a broadcaster, working for renowned organisations like the BBC, Independent Radio, and British Forces Broadcasting. His experiences behind the microphone took him to various places around the world.In 1996, David joined the UK Army Reserves and took on the role of a media officer. From there, he ventured into conflict zones, serving in Bosnia, Canada, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. But it doesn't stop there. David's passion for media led him to become a media trainer in Ethiopia and the South Caucasus.Since 2005, David has made a charming village in the northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, called Cardacani, his home base. He claims that it's where he's happiest, and I can't wait to delve into the reasons why.Now, let me share a few intriguing facts about David. Did you know that he conquered the two highest peaks in Ecuador back in 1989? Impressive, right? In recognition of his valuable service, he was awarded the Queen's commendation in 1999 and even made an MB in 2002, all for his contributions in the former Yugoslavia.While David claims to speak "passable" German, he admits to struggling with the languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. But don't be fooled, he can certainly get by now.As for how I stumbled upon David, it was through my endless quest for captivating podcasts covering the Balkans and the former Yugoslavia. Kansas, America's legendary progressive rock band, will celebrate their 50th Anniversary in 2023. To commemorate this landmark occasion, current label InsideOutMusic are pleased to announce "Another Folk In The Road - 50 Years Of Kansas" for release on Friday, December 16, 2022. A career-spanning collection, it features carefully selected tracks from across the band's sizable discography, as well as a new version of "Can I Tell You." Originally recorded and released on their 1974 debut, the song is updated by the current line-up. It provides a full-circle perspective on the band's long and continuing history that has seen them release 16 studio albums and sell more than 30 million albums worldwide.

Independent radio stations have called on the Government to scrap the broadcasting levy. The charge is made on broadcasters and used to fund the industry regulator, but it costs stations millions of euro each year, something the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland say is unfair. This week's guest is David Goren, an independent radio producer and audio archivist based in NY whose company is called Handsewn Radio.   His programs for the BBC and NPR have showcased outlaws of the airwaves. He focuses on the people and sounds of community radio: from shortwave to pirate radio stations operating from church basements, bodegas and bedrooms. He has created a Brooklyn Pirate Radio Sound Map and he's now in partnership with the sound preservation program of the Library of Congress. He began his career as a radio engineer primarily recording jazz from Lincoln Center.
