MDJ Script/ Top Stories for August 13th Publish Date: August 13th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Wednesday, August 13th and Happy Birthday to Mark Lemke I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Kennesaw man suspected in CDC shooting reportedly fixated on COVID vaccine Cyclists celebrate Cobb Silver Comet extension Cobb Young Professionals names Next Generation Award winners All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: INGLES 1 STORY 1: Kennesaw man suspected in CDC shooting reportedly fixated on COVID vaccine Mourners gathered outside the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters Monday, leaving flowers, balloons, and handwritten notes at a makeshift memorial for Officer David Rose, who was killed in Friday’s shooting. A large cardboard sign with Rose’s photo was covered in messages—“Thank you for your service,” “You’re a hero.” DeKalb officers R.E. Ramsey and J. Nelson, who worked with Rose, stopped by to pay their respects. “He was just a great person,” Nelson said quietly. The shooting unfolded Friday afternoon when Patrick Joseph White, 30, of Kennesaw, opened fire near the CDC campus. White, reportedly distraught over his dog’s death and blaming the COVID vaccine for his depression, tried to enter the CDC but was stopped by security. He then drove to a nearby CVS and began shooting. Officer Rose, a Marine veteran and father of two with another child on the way, responded to the call. He was critically injured and later died at Grady Memorial Hospital. The CDC, Emory University, and local law enforcement have increased security measures in the wake of the attack. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe for Rose’s family has raised over $235,000. The investigation continues, with the GBI calling the scene “complex” and evidence collection ongoing. STORY 2: Cyclists celebrate Cobb Silver Comet extension The Silver Comet Trail was alive with energy Saturday as hundreds of cyclists hit the pavement to celebrate the long-awaited trail extension and raise awareness for multiple sclerosis. The new 2.1-mile Silver Comet Connector, funded by the PATH Foundation, links Cobb County to Atlanta, weaving through East-West Connector, Plant Atkinson Road, and along Atlanta Road to the Chattahoochee River. It’s a big step toward a dream: a continuous path connecting Atlanta to Alabama. Riders gathered at the Floyd Road Trailhead, led by Mableton Councilwoman Patricia Auch, while Team Noodle—a group raising funds for MS research—started their 17.5-mile trek from Atlanta. Volunteers greeted riders with water, bananas, and goodie bags at the finish, while Cobb County leaders celebrated the milestone. “It’s the future,” Auch said. “When it’s fully connected, it’s going to be incredible.” For Roberta Cook, who’s spent 20 years advocating for this extension, the day was emotional. “I’m just so glad I lived to see it,” she said. Cyclist Cecelia Saxon summed it up: “The camaraderie, the exercise, the trees—it’s all just beautiful.” STORY 3: Cobb Young Professionals names Next Generation Award winners Cobb Young Professionals announced Adam Ross and Natalie DeLancey as the 2025 Next Generation Award winners on Monday—and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. Ross, who’s been with the Cumberland CID for six years, has done everything from securing millions in state funding for a pedestrian bridge to launching One Cumberland, a nonprofit expanding the district’s mission. “He’s shaping Cobb’s future,” said Chamber spokeswoman Amy Selby. DeLancey, meanwhile, runs the City Springs Theatre Company, pulling off a $3 million budget and reaching 50,000 patrons annually. Oh, and her students? They’ve snagged $10.5 million in scholarships this year alone. For more, check out cobbchamber.org. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. FESTIVAL STORY 4: Man charged with burglary after entering school with knife, drug paraphernalia Dusty Gene Beals, from Eatonton, is facing some serious charges after allegedly breaking into Pebblebrook High School in the middle of the night—1:04 a.m. on Aug. 5, to be exact. According to a Cobb County Police warrant, Beals was caught with a folding knife (blade over two inches) and a glass pipe typically used for smoking meth. He’s now charged with second-degree burglary, having a weapon on school property, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Oddly enough, his name doesn’t show up in jail records, leaving a few unanswered questions about his whereabouts. STORY 5: Loudermilk, McBath talk Trump at chamber luncheon Monday’s Cobb Chamber luncheon brought U.S. Reps. Lucy McBath and Barry Loudermilk to the stage—separately, of course—to share their starkly different takes on the Trump administration. McBath, speaking first, didn’t hold back. She slammed federal funding cuts to gun violence prevention programs, calling them part of a “wider rollback” that’s hurting communities. As a mother who lost her son to gun violence, her words carried weight. She also criticized Trump’s tariffs and healthcare policies, calling his second term chaotic. Loudermilk, on the other hand, praised Trump’s vision of a “golden era” for America, rooted in what he called “American exceptionalism.” He compared it to the Wright brothers’ era—bold, innovative, and unafraid to challenge the status quo. Loudermilk emphasized smaller government and individual rights as the key to a thriving economy. Two lawmakers, two visions—one room full of opinions. Break: STORY 6: Atlanta Ballet to have Balanchine & Peck The Atlanta Ballet is kicking off its 2025-26 season with Balanchine & Peck, a stunning mixed-rep performance that blends the timeless genius of George Balanchine with the fresh, modern creativity of Justin Peck. Running Sept. 12-14 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, the program features three works: the romantic Emeralds, the bold and abstract In Creases, and the iconic Prodigal Son. Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin, celebrating his 10th season, calls it the perfect opener. “Prodigal Son is deeply personal to me—it’s the role that changed my career,” he shared. Tickets are available at atlantaballet.com or the venue box office. STORY 7: Man accused of attacking officer with steel pipe at Marietta Hilton Joseph Wilhoit, 33, of Marietta, is facing some serious charges after a chaotic encounter with police on Aug. 6 at the Hilton Atlanta Marietta Hotel. According to the arrest warrant, things escalated fast. When an officer informed Wilhoit he had warrants and was under arrest, he didn’t go quietly—he pulled away, grabbed a six-foot steel pipe, and swung it at the officer. He missed, thankfully, but the two wrestled for several minutes before Wilhoit finally let go of the pipe. After his arrest, officers found 10 grams of meth in his pocket. Wilhoit remains in custody, charged with aggravated assault, obstruction, and drug possession. No bond. We’ll have closing comments after this. There is something that happens when two particular voices blend together that transcends all understanding or logic. And, when those voices share the same DNA, the magnetic pull is such that they become one voice. We've heard that family blend many times: The Everlys, The Wilsons, The Gibbs, The Andrew Sisters, etc. The list goes on.One of the most uncanny examples of this phenomenon belongs to Charlie and Ira Louvin, those titans of Country and Gospel music. When they sing with religious devotion, such as they do here in The River of Jordan - you can hear God and his miracles working in every keening, harmonic fifth. The other song presented today features Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, - a pair of folks about as far from siblings as you can get, but whose vocal cords also combine miraculously.THE LOUVINSThe first time I heard of Ira and Charlie Louvin was through Emmylou Harris's 1975 version of If I Could Only Win Your Love, and I had to know from whence this other-worldly sound originated. Like a hound on the scent, I tracked down several recordings from the brothers, and sat open mouthed as song after song cut through me. The Louvins, whose birth name was Loudermilk (cousins to the noted songwriter), had a contentious relationship, owing to Ira's drunken temperament and womanizing. Charlie contemplated going solo, but Ira's early demise, at 41, in a drunken car crash, made the decision permanent. Ira usually takes the high harmony, but they had the ability to switch mid way through a song so that it was often hard to tell who was covering which part. Truly one of the all time great sibling singing duos. ALISON KRAUSS AND ROBERT PLANTA musical marriage made in heaven that no fiction writer could have invented, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss came together in one of the most celestial combos ever. The Led Zeppelin frontman, renowned for his soaring falsetto, melds with the rawboned steadiness of bluegrass's sweetheart in an eclectic stew of influences that somehow create a single entity. Today's featured song, Please Read the Letter, nestled among cuts by the Everlys, Gene Clark, Mel Tillis, and Townes Van Zandt was written by Plant and his Zeppelin brother, Jimmie Page, and is added seamlessly to the mix.The resulting album, Raising Sand, produced by the curatorial genius T-Bone Burnett, was released in 2007, and swept the Grammies and Americana Music Awards, taking its place in the pantheon of beautiful enigmas.

Today's bonus episode is my sit-down conversation with Congressman Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), Chair of the newly upgrade J6 Select Committee investigating the failures of security for January 6, 2021 as well as the politicization of the original J6 Select Committee. Now that we are a little more than two and a half weeks into Donald Trump's presidency, I wanted to spend some time getting caught back up with the Congressman and what direction they will take under the new administration? We discuss how the jurisdictional lines for his committee are still being established, given how many areas are involved in the events of January 6. We also discuss the pace of the new administration and whether Congress is prepared to not only keep up with it, but also codify Executive Orders into law to prevent this constant turmoil of how easily EO's can be overturned. Additionally, we discuss the DOGE team, the USAID fraud already discovered, and why are many long-time members of the House of Representatives shocked over their findings? Shouldn't the House have know what they were passing in the budgets? This leads to a pointed discussion over getting back to the 12 appropriations bills, discussing the items line by line, and re-establishing authorizations for when the agencies in the Executive Branch want to allocate money within their budgets. We close with me asking if the House is willing to change how they have been doing thing for the last few decades, with a warning that the American people are not going to be happy with the status quo. The Congressman agreed and said the appetite is there and hopefully they will be able to drag life-long staffers into getting back to following the Constitution. In this episode, Joe interviews Dan Ronken: licensed professional counselor and addiction counselor with a private practice in Boulder, CO, called Inclusion Recovery, and lead trainer and facilitator for the Integrative Psychiatry Institute (IPI). He tells his story of going from a sponsored BMX racer to three stints in rehab before the age of 14, and what he's learned from his experiences in recovery over the years: that there is a wide range of what ‘in recovery' actually means, that abstinence-only and 12-step models don't work for many, that connection and community – and consistency in both – are enormous parts of what actually leads to overcoming an addiction, and more. As recovery communities cautiously begin to talk about psychedelics, he highlights the importance of nuance in understanding addiction, the need for open-mindedness toward new therapeutic approaches, and the need for diverse support networks that welcome discussions around psychedelics. He talks about: Inducing alcohol cravings before an intramuscular ketamine shot as a way of using neuroplasticity to rewire the brain's relationship with alcohol How Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, benefitted greatly from LSD in the 50s, and how Ronken originally scoffed at such a concept The growing visibility of psychedelics in popular media, as seen in shows like “Loudermilk” and “Ted Lasso” The benefits of sober communities coming together for active and healthy activities and more! For links, head to the show notes page.
Today's bonus episode is my sit-down conversation with Congressman Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), Chair of the J6 Subcommittee investigating the failures of security for January 6, 2021 as well as the politicization of the original J6 Select Committee. On my Tuesday show, I got into the top 10 key takeaways from the just released Interim Report. I wanted to spend some time getting caught back up with the Congressman and the work their committee has accomplished to-date. I also wanted to discuss some of the next steps and whether or not there is a shift in tone from some of the people who never thought Donald Trump would ever get elected again. We discuss comments from Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), how Liz Cheney may have been orchestrating even more behind the scenes and how the new nominees of the Trump administration should be able to remove the roadblocks. Congressman Loudermilk believes they need to be upgraded to a full Select Committee to give them more power and jurisdiction to get the answers they are seeking. Directed by Bobby Farrelly (“Dumb and Dumber,” “There's Something About Mary”) and written by Peter Farrelly, Dan Ewan, and Ricky Blitt, the movie stars Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Ethan Dillon, Post Malone, and more. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support
Today's show opens with news of Matt Gaetz withdrawing his nomination for US Attorney General. I have some thoughts on that on how it might play out going forward. Then, it looks like Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) finally got the DoD Inspector General to admit that their report on the delay of the National Guard on January 6, 2021 was misleading. There is still so much to uncover. Maybe, with the Trump administration coming back into office, Loudermilk will be able to get to the bottom of the J6 riots. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) beclowned herself yesterday over the men in women's bathrooms debate. She literally said that women and girls are now going to be less safe with a policy of not allowing men into the women's restroom. On the flip side, Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE), which is now his legal name, decided not to fight over the bathroom issue, saying he's about fighting to lower costs for the people of Delaware. I have to admit, I am pleased with that statement. However, the Trans-mafia came after him with full vitriol and anger. Maybe they are not safe to have in anyone's restrooms. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) went on an unhinged rant, saying white men are not allowed to use the word “oppressed.” She then proceeded to demonstrate her ignorance on the slave trade, on oppression and on DEI.. In her defense, she is a product of the current, Woke/CRT ideologies underneath most of today's classrooms, from kindergarten through college. ABC News had to report on the guilty verdict for illegal immigrant Jose Ibarra yesterday. At the end, they did a vile thing and tried to make it sound like the death was due to pressure from Donald Trump to kill the “bipartisan” border bill. This is a mockery of the facts and of the timeline. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is really happy to help eliminate wasteful government spending. Thomas Sowell has a quote, reminding us that bureaucrats live for the process, not the outcome. To that point, we close with a quote from Stephen A. Smith about government waste. John Solomon and Chairman Barry Loudermilk discuss bombshell text messages found by Loudermilk's committee showing communication and coordination between former January 6 Committee Member Liz Cheney and star witness Cassidy Hutchinson, and dishes on the “numerous violations of protocol, of ethics, possibly even law.” Saying, “I think there's no doubt in that with what we've recently uncovered, I think it was clear that was violated by either the chairman of the [January 6th] committee Benny Thompson, or the Vice Chair Liz Cheney, in the fact of, all the documents that were hid from the American people, were hid from this committee and or were deleted and destroyed. I think that in itself, besides violating preservation rules of the House and official US government documents, that provision right there was totally violated. So I think we have numerous violations of protocol, of ethics, possibly even law.“See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this episode of Better for America, Rebecca Weber is joined by Congressman Barry Loudermilk, who represents Georgia's 11th congressional district, to discuss recent findings regarding the January 6th Select Committee and what the Democrats don't want you to know about it. Loudermilk highlights newly obtained transcripts that reveal key discrepancies in the official narrative about the National Guard's role on January 6th. As he explains, "Once we got these transcripts, and we were able to identify... Donald Trump did order the National Guard ready." Despite claims from the Department of Defense that the Guard was not prepared, the transcripts show that they were ready for deployment early on the morning of January 6th, contradicting the official report. Loudermilk further sheds light on the chain of command and the ongoing debate about responsibility between President Trump and then-Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. He asserts that Pelosi's initial delay was due to political considerations, as she did not approve National Guard assistance until after the Capitol had already been breached because she and the Democrats didn't like the optics of having the National Guard present. Additionally, Loudermilk points to testimony from General Mark Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a known critic of Trump, who confirmed under oath that Trump had ordered the National Guard to be ready for deployment in a January 3rd phone call, further exonerating him."
House Administration Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) intends to bring forward a House resolution laying out all the evidence contradicting the Democrat-led January 6 Select Committee's report. Rep. Loudermilk also explains why he will wait until the next Congress to bring forward criminal referrals. Additional interview with Freedom Foundation Communications Director Maddie Dermon on the potential decertification of the United Teachers of Dade and the government mandates for electric vehicles reflects the Biden-Harris administration's prioritization of union leaders over members. “It's due time that both political parties, especially the Democrats, pay more attention to the interests of our working people in America,” she says.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
