Ever wonder who helps legendary musicians share their stories with the world? In this episode, Team Derringer (Laura, Alton, and Paul) chats with the incredible Anne Leighton, a top-tier music publicist, artist representative, poet, and public speaker from NYC. Anne pulls back the curtain on her fascinating career and gives us the inside scoop on what it's like to work with some of the biggest names in music. She also shares tales of writing for top music mags and the art -- and heart -- of championing artists from every corner of rock and pop.  The group unpacks what a publicist actually does (think equal parts strategist, storyteller, and stubbornness), how long promoter-artist relationships can last, and why publicity is marathon work dressed up like a sprint. The hosts keep it snappy with playful banter and music snippets that prove the point. Get ready for a walk through rock and roll history! Anne shares stories about her work with the iconic Jethro Tull and its flute-wielding frontman, Ian Anderson, the masterminds behind classics like "Aqualung" and the jaw-droppingly long 43-minute song, "Thick as a Brick." Then we groove to the 70s with tales of the band Orleans, who gave us the timeless hits "Dance with Me" and "Still the One." Plus, you'll hear some amazing trivia, like how Orleans' leader, John Hall, took a detour from music to serve in the U.S. Congress. We cap it off with the brilliant, Grammy-winning trio, The String Revolution, and discuss their stunning instrumental covers of hits like Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" and Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train." This conversation was so good, we had to make it a two-parter! After accepting the title of Honorary Derringer, Anne agreed to come back in a few weeks to talk about three more amazing artists! AZBio  Member Organizations in the fields of business, research and education, health care delivery, economic development, government, and other professions involved in the biosciences are the key drivers of the growth of Arizona's life science sector.  As the unified voice of our industry in Arizona, AZBio strives to make Arizona a place where bioscience organizations can grow and succeed.   AZBio works nationally and globally with the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), and leading patient advocacy organizations. Through these relationships, AZBio has access to information, contacts, resources, cost saving programs, and the global bioscience and medtech community.   Arizona's bioscience industry is growing rapidly and reached nearly 30,000 jobs spanning 2,160 business establishments in 2018. Industry employment has grown by 15 percent since 2016—twice the growth rate of the nation—with each of the five major subsectors adding jobs during the period. Arizona's universities conducted nearly $580 million in R&D activities in bioscience-related fields in 2018, fueled in part by steadily increasing NIH awards to Arizona institutions since 2016. Venture capital investments in Arizona bioscience companies increased in 2019, and during the 2016-19 period totaled $349 million. Arizona inventors have been awarded 2,178 bioscience-related patents since 2016, among the second quintile of states in patent activity.   Notes:   Seg 1   Biotech and life sciences industry in Arizona, has 3000 businesses and 36,000 employees. The economic impact in 2021 was $38.5 billion. AZ Bio would like to double, so by 2033, the impact would be $78 billion.   Examples of biotech companies in Arizona are Medtronic that makes medical devices, WL Gore, material sciences. Other companies in diagnostics, there are Sonoran Quest which does testing. This also Castle Bio Sciences, deals in cancer treatment. Some medicine companies are Bristol, Myers, and Calvari who deals in cancer drugs. Calvari is the bio science company of the year in 2024.   AZ Bio Science Week started in 2017. AZ Bio week starts Oct. 13 (2025) and has events daily from Monday to Friday.     Example of one of the many companies involved with AZ Bio week:   CND Life Sciences - CND's Syn-One Test® offers physicians and patients an accurate, convenient, evidence-based tool to help diagnose a synucleinopathy. And our mission has just begun.   NIH - National Institute of Health gives grants or funding to universities, hospitals and even companies for medical research.   Takes time to build a medical device type product, a few years to decades.   Government is an important partner, that provides financial support. Examples are Medicare research, workforce help, and tax breaks. Many organizations like this are publicly funded with government and university help.  $25 billion in funding over the last 20 years in Arizona in bio investment. Government funded $5 billion, that's from state and federal sales tax at a penny per. $112 million funding to universities in 2022. Combination of industry, government and philanthropy. Discovery phase - university helps develop the IP and research. Technology is spun out of the university to corporate development by companies. The AZ Board of Regents owns the patents. They license the patents to companies. Then you have regulatory.  Distribution of a product. Successful products are profitable. They have a royalty that pays to the company, the university and the government. Example of this was the University of Florida created Gatorade in the 1970s and still gets royalties today. Process takes 10 to 15 years, with hundreds of people involved. Clinical trials of any type of drug takes years.   Creation of the Covid vaccine was an outlier, as many people had Covid at the time so it was very easy to put together big study groups       Seg 2   Examples of newer companies in biotech field –   Neo clinical stage company dealing in heart health with aortic artery for the abdomen.   Another new company is prim dealing in MCT deficiency, compound growth and they are in clinical and testing stages.   Drugs get tested through computer models, and then on animals. Always have to worry about safety and ethics. FDA has very strict rules. You do not put people at risk, after monitor, during test and post monitoring. There's high-level quality control.       AZ Bio has members that are in the bioscience industry with current companies   AZ Advances is about bio startups in early stage companies It's a 501 C nonprofit charity that is funding, internships, and education   Patient is not only the client, but the purpose for why biotech companies exist     Neuralink Corp. is an American neurotechnology company that has developed as of 2024 implantable brain–computer interfaces. It was founded by Elon Musk and a team of eight scientists and engineers. Neuralink was launched in 2016 and first publicly reported in March 2017.   Neuralink's first human patient, Noland Arbaugh, is an Arizona native who received his implant in January 2024 at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. He will appear at Arizona Bioscience Week 2025     https://www.azbio.org/azbw2025     Events Summary:   Monday - Women in Biotech Leading Women: Biotech & Beyond Join us for an evening of conversation and connections with our community's leading women as we kick off Arizona Bioscience Week in style!   Tuesday - Fundraising Fundraising Strategies for Life Science Startups  A compelling narrative is crucial when you are fundraising and communicating with life science investors.  This Life Science Nation (LSN) Global Fundraising Bootcamp covers topics related to executing a successful fundraise for your startup.      Wednesday – AZ Bio awards, philanthropy, entertainment, and AZ Advances The 21st Annual AZBio Awards & AZAdvances After Party Celebrate with the Educators, Researchers, and Organizations that are making life better for people in Arizona and around the world.  Join us at the Phoenix Convention Center as we honor the 2024 AZBio Award Winners. Our core ReFlow™ technology uses a simple finger depression of a soft silicone dome located under the patient's scalp to produce a noninvasive, one-way flush of the patient's own CSF directed toward the ReFlow™ catheter to restore or increase CSF flow through a non-flowing shunt and potentially avoid emergency surgery.  Learn More     The name Anuncia comes from Panthera Uncia, the species name of the snow leopard. These animals live in mountainous regions of Asia and have been called by the World Wildlife Foundation “Guardians of the Headwaters” as they roam the headwater areas of the western basins. The origin of the word hydrocephalus comes from the Greek hudrokephalon, from hudro ‘water'+ kephalē ‘head'. The snow leopard, or Guardian of the Headwaters, is a symbol of Anuncia's dedication to improve daily quality of life for the millions of underserved patients with hydrocephalus and other CSF disorders, as well as their families, who suffer from the clinical, economic, and emotional burden of repeat revision brain surgery due to VP shunt occlusions.      Full Show: HERE           Best of Biotech from AZ Bio & Life Sciences to Jellatech: HERE   Biotech Shows: HERE   AZ Tech Council Shows:  https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=az+tech+council *Includes Best of AZ Tech Council show from 2/12/2023      ‘Best Of' Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Best+of+BRT      Thanks for Listening.

Although it was a parody of progressive rock (Ian Anderson wasn't too happy about Aqualung being lumped in with such,) Thick As a Brick reached number one on the Billboard 200 despite the fact the album was one song that took up two sides of the record. Efforts to do a follow-up at the Château d'Hérouville in rural France proved fruitless, being renamed by Anderson and crew "Château d'Isaster" and the entire album they had planned abandoned. Returning to the UK they quickly recorded A Passion Play. What was supposed to be a concept album of mini-suites following a man's journey through the afterlife was released, like Thick As a Brick, as one complete work.  While it again reached the top of the charts it was hated by critics and the band itself, although it has developed a following over the years.

an Anderson Talks New Jethro Tull Album Curious Ruminant And Band's Legacy On The Loaded Radio Podcast TL;DR Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson joins The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss the band's latest album Curious Ruminant, which arrived on March 7, 2025. Anderson shares insights into the songwriting process, the return of former keyboardist Andrew Giddings, and how the band's sound continues to evolve. He also reflects on Jethro Tull's historic Grammy win over Metallica, their legacy in progressive rock, and more. Listen to the full episode at the bottom of this article or wherever you get your podcasts. Ian Anderson Discusses Curious Ruminant And Jethro Tull's Everlasting Influence Few bands in rock history have maintained the creative energy and musical sophistication of Jethro Tull. With a career spanning over five decades, the British progressive rock icons are set to return with their latest studio album, Curious Ruminant. This marks their third album in just four years, following the success of The Zealot Gene (2022) and RökFlöte (2023). Ian Anderson, the band's founder, flutist, and frontman, joined The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss the new record, the creative process behind it, and Tull's enduring legacy in the world of progressive and folk rock. Curious Ruminant: A Deep Dive Into The New Album The album consists of nine tracks, ranging from short two-and-a-half-minute compositions to a near seventeen-minute epic. The LP features a mix of full-band performances and intricate acoustic arrangements, staying true to Tull's signature blend of progressive rock, folk, and classical influences. Notably, the album sees the return of former keyboardist Andrew Giddings, alongside longtime members David Goodier (bass), John O'Hara (piano, keyboards, accordion), and Scott Hammond (drums). Newcomer Jack Clark makes his Jethro Tull recording debut on electric guitar, while James Duncan (drums, cajón, percussion) also contributes to the recording. Anderson revealed that some of the compositions stem from unfinished instrumental demos recorded years ago, yet they blend seamlessly with the newly crafted material. The album's sonic palette includes not only his signature flute solos and melodies but also accordion, mandolin, acoustic and tenor guitars, evoking the spirit of Jethro Tull's 1970s folk-prog era. Ian Anderson On The Writing Process The creative process for Curious Ruminant began shortly after the release of RökFlöte in 2023. Anderson started conceptualizing the album in late 2023, with the first musical ideas taking shape by May 2024. By June, lyrics and melodies were flowing effortlessly, creating a natural synergy between the new and previously recorded material. Unlike many of Tull's past releases, Curious Ruminant features more personal, introspective lyrics. Anderson, known for his sharp observational songwriting, balances his trademark wit with moments of deep self-reflection. However, as he humorously points out, fans shouldn't expect the typical “I-me” lyricism found in mainstream rock and pop. Jethro Tull's Historic Grammy Win Over Metallica In addition to discussing the new album, Anderson reflects on one of the most controversial moments in Grammy history—Jethro Tull's victory over Metallica in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category in 1989. At the time, Metallica was widely expected to win for …And Justice for All, but the award instead went to Tull's Crest of a Knave, sparking outrage among metal fans. While Anderson has addressed the incident numerous times over the years, he still finds humor in the situation. The band didn't even attend the ceremony, assuming they had no chance of winning. However, the moment has since become an infamous chapter in both Jethro Tull's and Metallica's histories. An Enduring Legacy Formed in 1967, Jethro Tull carved a unique path in rock music by incorporating progressive rock, folk, blues, and classical elements into their sound. Led by Anderson's unmistakable flute playing and poetic lyricism, the band has released 23 studio albums, including landmark records like Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972), and Songs from the Wood (1977). Even after decades in the industry, Anderson remains committed to crafting thought-provoking, musically rich compositions. With Curious Ruminant, he continues to push the boundaries of Tull's sound while honoring its rich legacy.

This and his fascination with capturing images of the subaquatic world paved the way for a career filming the first underwater documentaries. Travelling the seas with his trusty crew on their boat, the Calypso, Captain Cousteau in his trademark knitted red cap became a household name; thanks to shows including his TV series ‘The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau'. Through trials and tribulations, including an impromptu sorority gig that defined their band name as "Zebra," Randy's narratives gleam with humor and resilience. The band experienced growing pains and successes, from hopping the New Orleans scene to making waves in New York, eventually charming Atlantic Records with their distinct sound and rocking hit "Who's Behind the Door?" Join us as Randy delves into the magic of songwriting, the influence of greats like The Beatles and Bob Dylan, and the rock-n-roll hustle that's kept Zebra touring for decades. With anecdotes about almost touring with Jefferson Airplane and the comical confusion with the other famous Randy Jackson, this episode is a treasure trove for music aficionados. Plus, there's exciting news about Zebra's upcoming album, the first since 2001. So, grab your PJs and gather 'round as we celebrate the legacy of rock with tales that will make your heart sing and your feet tap. Mick and Jeff look back at some of the band's best work, and, maybe, some of their strangest. The “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is Queen II, a sensational album released the year before Queen took over the world!  Both Mick & Jeff love it! Jeff takes a look at what AI is doing to music.  We're not worried, because, as Joe Walsh says, AI can't even trash a hotel room!  While he's at it, he then looks at who is “knocking on Heaven's door” this month. Yet another very full episode! Episode playlist Professional Flautist watches Jethro Tull:  https://youtu.be/0SCdFmSqcjk?si=gRbdG9nsk0rW4Od7  “Too Old to Rock & Roll / Too Young to die”  References:  Queen II, EMI Records, Elektra Records, Trident Studios, Roy Thomas Baker, Jethro Tull, Marquee Club, flute, John Glasscock, Ian Anderson. Part of this equipment is your safety gear. Signaling devices are a critical part of this safety gear. Sometimes divers might not think they need this but you never know when it will make a difference. Not only do you need to have this safety equipment with you, you also need to know how to deploy and use the gear. Remember, when you actually have to use the safety equipment, the situation will be stressful. That is not the time to learn how to use it. The Great Shark Snapshot is back for its second year. Divers and snorkelers are asked to record all their sightings of sharks and rays in the Shark Trust Shark Log. This is very welcome news as in the past several years, major scuba equipment manufacturers have not attended. DEMA Show is our big opportunity to interact with various exhibitors, evaluate product, engage in dialog and make future purchasing decisions. It is vital to a health dive industry. I commend Aqualung on this decision and hope that other big players come to the same realization. This trade show matters. President Biden must uphold his promise to end new offshore oil and gas leasing in his 5-year plan. Use his authority under section 12c to permanently protect areas from new offshore drilling Congress must pass legislation to reverse the linking of offshore wind leases to offshore oil and gas leases BSEE must seek transformative changes to oil and gas safety culture through inspection and enforcement and reduce the reliance on industry-written standards.
