Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Although it was a parody of progressive rock (Ian Anderson wasn't too happy about Aqualung being lumped in with such,) Thick As a Brick reached number one on the Billboard 200 despite the fact the album was one song that took up two sides of the record. Efforts to do a follow-up at the Château d'Hérouville in rural France proved fruitless, being renamed by Anderson and crew "Château d'Isaster" and the entire album they had planned abandoned. Returning to the UK they quickly recorded A Passion Play. What was supposed to be a concept album of mini-suites following a man's journey through the afterlife was released, like Thick As a Brick, as one complete work. While it again reached the top of the charts it was hated by critics and the band itself, although it has developed a following over the years.
an Anderson Talks New Jethro Tull Album Curious Ruminant And Band's Legacy On The Loaded Radio Podcast TL;DR Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson joins The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss the band's latest album Curious Ruminant, which arrived on March 7, 2025. Anderson shares insights into the songwriting process, the return of former keyboardist Andrew Giddings, and how the band's sound continues to evolve. He also reflects on Jethro Tull's historic Grammy win over Metallica, their legacy in progressive rock, and more. Listen to the full episode at the bottom of this article or wherever you get your podcasts. Ian Anderson Discusses Curious Ruminant And Jethro Tull's Everlasting Influence Few bands in rock history have maintained the creative energy and musical sophistication of Jethro Tull. With a career spanning over five decades, the British progressive rock icons are set to return with their latest studio album, Curious Ruminant. This marks their third album in just four years, following the success of The Zealot Gene (2022) and RökFlöte (2023). Ian Anderson, the band's founder, flutist, and frontman, joined The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss the new record, the creative process behind it, and Tull's enduring legacy in the world of progressive and folk rock. Curious Ruminant: A Deep Dive Into The New Album The album consists of nine tracks, ranging from short two-and-a-half-minute compositions to a near seventeen-minute epic. The LP features a mix of full-band performances and intricate acoustic arrangements, staying true to Tull's signature blend of progressive rock, folk, and classical influences. Notably, the album sees the return of former keyboardist Andrew Giddings, alongside longtime members David Goodier (bass), John O'Hara (piano, keyboards, accordion), and Scott Hammond (drums). Newcomer Jack Clark makes his Jethro Tull recording debut on electric guitar, while James Duncan (drums, cajón, percussion) also contributes to the recording. Anderson revealed that some of the compositions stem from unfinished instrumental demos recorded years ago, yet they blend seamlessly with the newly crafted material. The album's sonic palette includes not only his signature flute solos and melodies but also accordion, mandolin, acoustic and tenor guitars, evoking the spirit of Jethro Tull's 1970s folk-prog era. Ian Anderson On The Writing Process The creative process for Curious Ruminant began shortly after the release of RökFlöte in 2023. Anderson started conceptualizing the album in late 2023, with the first musical ideas taking shape by May 2024. By June, lyrics and melodies were flowing effortlessly, creating a natural synergy between the new and previously recorded material. Unlike many of Tull's past releases, Curious Ruminant features more personal, introspective lyrics. Anderson, known for his sharp observational songwriting, balances his trademark wit with moments of deep self-reflection. However, as he humorously points out, fans shouldn't expect the typical “I-me” lyricism found in mainstream rock and pop. Jethro Tull's Historic Grammy Win Over Metallica In addition to discussing the new album, Anderson reflects on one of the most controversial moments in Grammy history—Jethro Tull's victory over Metallica in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category in 1989. At the time, Metallica was widely expected to win for …And Justice for All, but the award instead went to Tull's Crest of a Knave, sparking outrage among metal fans. While Anderson has addressed the incident numerous times over the years, he still finds humor in the situation. The band didn't even attend the ceremony, assuming they had no chance of winning. However, the moment has since become an infamous chapter in both Jethro Tull's and Metallica's histories. An Enduring Legacy Formed in 1967, Jethro Tull carved a unique path in rock music by incorporating progressive rock, folk, blues, and classical elements into their sound. Led by Anderson's unmistakable flute playing and poetic lyricism, the band has released 23 studio albums, including landmark records like Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972), and Songs from the Wood (1977). Even after decades in the industry, Anderson remains committed to crafting thought-provoking, musically rich compositions. With Curious Ruminant, he continues to push the boundaries of Tull's sound while honoring its rich legacy.
We begin 2025 by going back 23 years to discuss our favourite songs of 2002, including emo classics, motivational hardcore, sparkly piano pop, terrifyingly positive psychedelic religious cults, and THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFF OF ALL TIME.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Christina Aguilera ft Redman, Aqualung, Bright Eyes, Vanessa Carlton, Cousteau, The Delgados, The DIllinger Escape Plan Ft Mike Patton, Down, Frou Frou, Hatebreed, Idlewild, Isis, Jay-Z Ft Big Boi, Killer Mike, & Twista, July Skies, Ben Kweller, Avril Lavigne, Malcolm Middleton, Miss Black America, Nada Surf, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, The Polyphonic Spree, Porcupine Tree, Sonic Youth, theSTART, Sigur Ros, Taking Back Sunday, Tech N9ne, Wilco, and James Yorkston & The AthletesFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13AsY6By1DI8knbl7TpMFx?si=cd88b8d2738249feFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau was an oceanographer, filmmaker and explorer who made the seas a subject of fascination for millions.During his time in the French Navy, Cousteau co-invented the Aqua-Lung: the first self-contained kit that allowed a diver to breathe underwater. This and his fascination with capturing images of the subaquatic world paved the way for a career filming the first underwater documentaries. Travelling the seas with his trusty crew on their boat, the Calypso, Captain Cousteau in his trademark knitted red cap became a household name; thanks to shows including his TV series ‘The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau'. He came across as a charming and eloquent showman - but his life wasn't without its tragedies and controversies...Nominating Cousteau is wildlife cameraman and and trained biologist Doug Allan, whose career filming animals, primarily in polar regions and underwater, was hugely inspired by the Frenchman. Doug says: "There's a mischievousness about him that he carried thorugh his whole life... I think he was just a really powerful, charismatic character."The presenter is Matthew Parris and the producer for BBC Studios Audio is Lucy Taylor.

Hey fabulous rock-n-roll lovers! In this sizzling episode we dive into the exhilarating world of Zebra with the iconic Randy Jackson. Randy shares a hilarious and somewhat frustrating band practice mishap where one bandmate insisted on playing "Aqualung" during "Suffragette City," even flaunting a Jack-o'-lantern grin with his loose tooth cap. Through trials and tribulations, including an impromptu sorority gig that defined their band name as "Zebra," Randy's narratives gleam with humor and resilience. The band experienced growing pains and successes, from hopping the New Orleans scene to making waves in New York, eventually charming Atlantic Records with their distinct sound and rocking hit "Who's Behind the Door?" Join us as Randy delves into the magic of songwriting, the influence of greats like The Beatles and Bob Dylan, and the rock-n-roll hustle that's kept Zebra touring for decades. In the latest episode of the Sadmen's journey down a rock and roll highway that starts in 1970(ish) and ends in 1995(ish), the lads pull out the corduroys and the paisley shirts and head for the warm bath of psychedelic bewilderment that was 1972. Having encountered Jethro Tull's Aqualung some 68 episodes previously, and hashed out the whole 'is it a concept album, isn't it a concept album' debate, it was time to make the acquaintance of its successor - Thick As A Brick. There were many questions to be answered, but none of them was 'Is this a concept album?' because of that, friends, there is no doubt. The problem with the Enter Sadmen podcast is that when one of the boys goes a bit weird, the other two follow suit. It's like Pavolv's dogs. Or something. Anyway, it doesn't matter. All you need to know is that getting on board with the 'out there' vibe were two more releases that are as curious as they are obscure. From Richard, a trip back to Canada to root out the self-titled debut by A Foot In Cold Water. From Steve, a slightly less arduous journey up the M1 to Northamptonfor Dark Round The Edges, the only release by a band called Dark, and one that will set you back a cool £35,000 to buy on vinyl today. We shit you not.

Send us a Text Message. Jethro Tull is one of the stranger turns taken by rock music over more than 50 years. Mick and Jeff look back at some of the band's best work, and, maybe, some of their strangest. The “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is Queen II, a sensational album released the year before Queen took over the world! Both Mick & Jeff love it! Jeff takes a look at what AI is doing to music. We're not worried, because, as Joe Walsh says, AI can't even trash a hotel room! While he's at it, he then looks at who is “knocking on Heaven's door” this month. Yet another very full episode! REM are often viewed by casual listeners as a lighter-style rock band. This is deceptive, with the band offering complex songs with obscure lyrics, brilliant playing, covers, and an incredible refusal to compromise. The boys talk through REM's development from their rock cliche start – the singer, Michael Stipe, met guitarist Peter Buck in the record shop where Buck worked - to their becoming one of the biggest-ever bands in the world – all without selling out. MOJO Magazine called them an ensemble growl adorned with heavenly harmonies which describes perfectly how their beautiful melodies, with disaffected, jaded lyrics, were influenced by The Velvet Underground. In turn they influenced such key bands as Nirvana and Pavement, as well as Radiohead, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, The Pixies and The Smiths. Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” is 1971's “Aqualung” by Jethro Tull. It's a special album of contrast full of brave variations – from gentle acoustic breaks to Martin Barre's power chords and Ian Anderson's tough vocals. The Dickensian quality of many of the lyrics challenges organised religion. Mick & Jeff both have great memories of this album, including the night that Jeff's keyboard player from his band, Ocean, blew the crowd away with the piano intro lifted from “Locomotive Breath” during a show south of Sydney. We look at The Stones' new album, “Hackney Diamonds”, their first in 18 years. Jeff thinks it's pretty good, but Mick still keeps comparing every new Stones record to “Exiles on Main Street”. Jeff brings some bad news. The Bored Ape Yacht Club, famed distributor of NFTs (as credible as digital currency!) has gone belly-up, driving another nail into the digital con artist industry. Our core ReFlow™ technology uses a simple finger depression of a soft silicone dome located under the patient's scalp to produce a noninvasive, one-way flush of the patient's own CSF directed toward the ReFlow™ catheter to restore or increase CSF flow through a non-flowing shunt and potentially avoid emergency surgery. Learn More The name Anuncia comes from Panthera Uncia, the species name of the snow leopard. These animals live in mountainous regions of Asia and have been called by the World Wildlife Foundation “Guardians of the Headwaters” as they roam the headwater areas of the western basins. The origin of the word hydrocephalus comes from the Greek hudrokephalon, from hudro ‘water'+ kephalē ‘head'. The snow leopard, or Guardian of the Headwaters, is a symbol of Anuncia's dedication to improve daily quality of life for the millions of underserved patients with hydrocephalus and other CSF disorders, as well as their families, who suffer from the clinical, economic, and emotional burden of repeat revision brain surgery due to VP shunt occlusions. Founded by a group of innovators, dreamers, entrepreneurs and scientists, Jellatech is on a mission to eliminate animals from the food system, making better ingredient products - starting with collagen and gelatin. Collagen is a by-product of the meat industry (protein in the body). You may be familiar with collagen from seeing it in skin serums, or with its derivative, gelatin, in gummy bears - but it's likely around you much more than you realize. This ingredient is used in a number of applications such as for food texturizers, vaccine stabilizers, pill capsules, the clarification of wine and beer, and many more. Today, the only way to source native, functional collagen is to extract it from animals. This is what they are changing at Jellatech. Jellatech makes functional, native collagen - without animals. Cellular agriculture enables one to produce a more sustainable, smarter high quality collagen that breaks the cycle of relying on an inefficient and unethical supply chain of live animals. Remember, when you actually have to use the safety equipment, the situation will be stressful. That is not the time to learn how to use it. The US EPA has developed a Draft National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution in April 2023. The draft strategy is currently in a comment period that has been extended to July 31, 2023. This strategy builds upon our National Recycling Strategy with a focus on actions to reduce, reuse, collect and capture plastic waste. The Great Shark Snapshot is back for its second year. Divers and snorkelers are asked to record all their sightings of sharks and rays in the Shark Trust Shark Log. This event runs from July 22 -30, 2023. Last year over 200 divers from 14 countries provided 1800 entries into the log. It has been 50 years since scientist first discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch 600 miles northeast of Hawaii. It has grown to 1.6 million square miles - two times the size of Texas. Divers Alert Network and PADI conducted a day-long Safety Seminar for the Dive Community at PADI HQ in CA. The seminar featured a number of short presentations along with in-water demonstrations. The event was open to PADI Club members and dive instructors. Aggressor Adventures is now offering a consumer protection program StormCheck for missed days of diving due to named tropical storms. If you diving or charter is impacted by a named storm, you will get a voucher for the missed days. Commentary Recently Aqualung has announced that they will return to the DEMA Show in 2023. This is very welcome news as in the past several years, major scuba equipment manufacturers have not attended. DEMA Show is our big opportunity to interact with various exhibitors, evaluate product, engage in dialog and make future purchasing decisions. It is vital to a health dive industry. I commend Aqualung on this decision and hope that other big players come to the same realization. This trade show matters. Oceana recently published a report titled A Simple Solution - How President Biden can meet offshore clean energy goals and prevent new offshore drilling. Here are their four recommendations. President Biden must uphold his promise to end new offshore oil and gas leasing in his 5-year plan. Use his authority under section 12c to permanently protect areas from new offshore drilling Congress must pass legislation to reverse the linking of offshore wind leases to offshore oil and gas leases BSEE must seek transformative changes to oil and gas safety culture through inspection and enforcement and reduce the reliance on industry-written standards.

Justin and Tyler review Jethro Tull's 4th studio album Aqualung. With songs like Aqualung, Hymn 43, Cross-Eyed Mary, Locomotive Breath, and many others, this is a very strong and classic album. With over 7 millions copies sold worldwide, this is Jethro Tull's best selling album. Ian Anderson formed Jethro Tull in 1967, and prominently features the flute like no other rock and roll band. After fading from view in the UK after "Strange And Beautiful" (a top 10 hit in 2002), Aqualung was hardly consigned to the legend of the one hit wonder. Instead Matt Hales went to make his name and build his career in the USA - much of it through hard, steady touring - the opposite of his “instant success” in the UK. Aqualung bucked the trend for under-achieving British acts through the naughties, selling several hundred thousand albums and becoming darlings of the cool celebrity crowd, from appearances on Jay Leno's Tonight show to Grammy nominations and cool celebrities attending his shows. Matt Hales became what he calls “inadvertently cool”. How did that happen? By not compromising for one thing. “I tried compromising at one stage, by writing hits and giving the A&R guy what he wanted, but it made me unhappy. So I made the quietest music I could, my Idagio, my quieter version of Pet Sounds. That turned out to be successful anyway!”Hales also established a parallel music career by becoming a successful, sought after writer-producer: collaborating with Lianne La Havas (he produced her superb debut album), Bat for Lashes, Tom Chaplin, Mika, Paloma Faith, Disclosure and many others. This has set Matt free from the curse of every commercial musician out there i.e. not attached to having a hit. Still, despite being a collaborator for hire, Hales has released no less than seven albums as Aqualung. The most recent, Dead Letters, is something truly special. When I heard it I immediately invited Matt on the show to get the inside story on his rather unusual career journey. Hales is often compared with the great & the good, from Radiohead & Coldplay, to Elton John and Talk Talk. It makes sense when you listen to Dead Letters, an album in which he has let all of these influences come to the surface:“This is a record where I am paying homage to the record collection that I was raised on. There is Elton, Stevie Wonder, Bread, Toto - Pet Sounds of course, that's the muesli I was raised on”. And if you thought the key change is dead in pop music, then Matt Hales is out to prove you wrong on Dead Letters. As he mentions in our conversation, he can literally “do anything he wants”.Perhaps that's the very definition of musical longevity.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
Ah... Fall, crisp breezes, colorful leaves, stopgap government funding bills, averting government shutdowns. Everyone except Dianne Feinstein expects them at this time of year. Once he outgrew his early Saturday morning TV role, David Waldman never imagined that he'd ever need to address flutes again, but now it's come to this. In just a few years, Lizzo has won Grammys, Emmys, and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. But then she decided to be Black, female, and a little too happy with all that for conservatives, appalled at seeing her flaunt her flautist lips all over our revered founding father James Madison's old flute. This flute has been held in hallowed regard by the right for about 5 minutes now and by tradition should only be playing Aqualung. A Tennessee lawmaker pointed out the growing crisis of idiot Tennessee lawmakers implying that any school anywhere allows their students to poop in litterboxes. Sculptures of Ron Johnson can be found in various litterboxes across the nation, but if you have to see a life-size scatue, that POS can only be found in Milwaukee. Go behind the yellow border to meet the family that made National Geographic an American institution. Gilbert M. Grosvenor's 60-year career followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather—but he learned that sometimes he had to do things his own way. In his new memoir, A Man of the World, Grosvenor recounts a crucial decision that made him rethink the way National Geographic covers the world. Grosvenor also shares an unforgettable conversation with Jacques Cousteau and how he witnessed Jane Goodall's transformation from unknown young scientist to, well, Jane Goodall. For more information on this episode, visit natgeo.com/overheard. Want more? Check out Gil Grosvenor's new memoir, A Man of the World: My Life at National Geographic. From his first day of work in 1899, Gil's grandfather, Gilbert H. Grosvenor, put National Geographic on the map. A behind-the-scenes photo from our archives shows Grosvenor testing a state-of-the-art camera in 1913. Gil's commitment to environmental storytelling is now a part of National Geographic's DNA. See how we continue that legacy with initiatives like Planet or Plastic and our special issue, Saving Forests. There isn't a bad song on this album and probably the toughest for us to name our top three non hits. Ian Anderson, the front-man, lead singer and Flute player for Jethro Tull, demonstrates his diverse talents and his endless supply of energy into Tulls biggest album, and one of Rocks best albums of all time, no joke. There are so many songs on this album that deserved way more mainstream airplay than they received. The themes of religion, corruption, the Renaissance period and lust played out over masterful musicianship by all of the members, especially Anderson. Beyond that, the shoutouts, the gags, the sound bytes are hilarious, and we hope you enjoy!!Find us on both Twitter and Instagram @greatestnonhits or email us: thegreatestnonhits@gmail.comSupport the show
