E525 Postpartum Depression, Baby Blues and Asking for Help | With Nurse Bre Tyger

Good Dads Podcast

We welcome back Bre Tyger, Community Alignment Specialist from Family Connects, a program new to Springfield, MO. We cover the difference between "baby blues" and postpartum depression, and how it affects both Mom and Dad. A phenomenon of ongoing sadness in the days after your bundle of joy arrives is common and normal, but in general medical experts say the "baby blues" might begin to be classified as post-partum depression if the feelings persist beyond 2-3 weeks. Dads can get some form of post-partum depression, too, in as many as 10% of new dads.   CORRECTION:  After the recording concluded, Bre asked us to tell our listeners that post-partum depression occurs somewhere between 1 in 5 OR 1 in 3 new moms; that's between 20% and 33%.   Our Guest: Bre Tyger Bre Tyger is a Registered Nurse and serves as the Community Alignment Specialist for Springfield Greene County Health Department's Family Connects program. Family Connects is a free universal nurse home visiting program with a goal of providing support for families of newborns. Bre has worked in community and public health and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit most of her career and loves helping set families up for success. She has been married to her husband for 15 years and together they have two wonderful children.   Show Notes  (2:21) One thing I have seen commonly (in post-partum women) is difficulty bonding with the baby and attachment. They were so excited to have their baby, so excited when they first had Baby and brought them home, but suddenly they're saying, "I don't feel connected to my baby." They're having a hard time taking care of Baby; maybe they're having a hard time getting out of bed ... or having a hard time getting any good sleep. (4:38) It can feel like your fault—or like you need to do something to make it better—but post-partum depression is really not your fault. And it's not something that women choose (9:31) It's a big load for the dad to carry. Dads can feel a pressure of providing for their family. They have the normal pressure of providing for their family but now you wife is struggling, and you have this baby that you don't know what to do with or how to care for. That can be a lot of stress for the dad to carry. Some dads tend to take care of others before themselves, so they can also become sleep deprived; they can also forget to eat meals and those basic things to do to take care of themselves. (18:14) (Post-partum depression) can occur at any time in the year after Baby is born. That may not always be recognized.   Resources Family Connects Website Sign up for the Good Dads Newsletter and never miss a podcast!  The Good Dads blog  gooddads.com To be put in touch with Bre regarding the Advisory Committee with Family Connects, reach out to us at info@gooddads.com.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work at an archeological dig site? Jeff, one of Al's buddies from the college years, wondered the same thing. In 2021 he signed up to go on an archeology field camp at the Koster Site in southwest Illinois. This site has evidence of human habitation going back almost 9000 years. Jeff discusses the site's history and shares some of his experiences from working on the dig site. CORRECTION: After posting this episode Jeff informed me that the name of the site is actually the German site. The Koster site is another site in Illinois. *Correction: After recording our episode about Jessica, we received a message that one of the friends and Jessica's birthdays are only a day apart and Jessica's is actually the 15th while the friends is the 16th. This episode will be released on the 15th and once Kayla is back from vacation, the recording will be updated to reflect the correction. However, we still wanted to release the episode on Jessica's actual birthday even if currently the date in the episode is off. The updated recording will be corrected by June 21.*This is not a typical ONUC episode. A friend of Jessica McCormack reached out to us asked if we could do anything to spread awareness of their friend's unsolved murder. Kayla spoke with Jessica's friend and looked more into the case to see what we can do to help. This episode is our contribution to the fight to find Jessica's murderer. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2022/02/binary-system-podcast-303-wtnv-202-the-day-after-the-day-and-raised-by-wolves/ In addition to being a very poetic episode about how human beings process trauma and time, this week's episode of Welcome To Night Vale is also topical. I mean really topical, touching on current events that everyone in the world is following right now. And by that, I of course mean Wordle. If you're looking for a hint, today's answer has a silent "y" and no umlauts. You're welcome. Meanwhile Elizabeth has watched four Season Two episodes of Raised By Wolves, but Kathryn's only watched one. So, you know, spoilers for just that one episode as we talk about the fact that Mother and Father don't have pockets, and wonder who the heck scouted Kepler 22-b and decided that a planet with acid seas, gigantic holes to the core, and radioactive vegetables was somehow a good spot to revive the human race. This week's outro is a clip from Wave of the Synth by Uncan. The We Were All Raised By Wolves podcast has some very insightful comments on season one. The intro to the episode 10 recap really seems to imply that the host, Peter, has passed away, but there's recent activity on his reddit account? So we have no idea, but we hope for the best. Correction: After review by an expert on history (ie: someone with more knowledge than us)(ie: Nathan), it turns out that there wasn't a vaccine for the Spanish Flu, since at the time scientists were still looking for a bacterial cause instead of a virus. There WAS a vaccine for smallpox, and that's what inspired some of the political cartoons about the dangers of anti-vax sentiment, like the one scanned from the 1930's booklet Health In Pictures. Cornerstone Church

You can subscribe to our sermon podcast on iTunes by clicking this link. Note of Correction: After preaching this sermon, it was brought to my attention that I misinterpreted vv. 14-15. The following is an email I sent the church to explain and correct my blunder. Dear Cornerstone, It's been said that “Only God is able to humble us without humiliating us.” I agree. My wife has told me before that—if possible—she doesn't want to know much about the sermon I'm going to preach because she wants to receive it with fresh ears like everyone else. So, after the service on Sundays, she and I often debrief together. This last week, Ash said that she loved the message but was confused about something. In my sermon, I said that “God answered Boaz's prayer from Ruth 2:12. He had restored to Ruth and Naomi all that they lost and more. And in Ruth 4:14-15, Ruth wanted to make sure that Naomi saw it, too.” Ash commented that I had put those words in Ruth's mouth when the text explains that “the women said to Naomi” (v. 14). I sort of smirked, thinking to myself, I know you're tired. But put your pastor hat back on and help your wife understand the text. However, as I pulled up the passage, I saw that she was right and I was wrong. Ruth didn't explain God's reversals of bitterness/joy, mourning/dancing, emptiness/fullness; the women did. My pride automatically kicked me into defense mode. I explained to Ash that it was an honest mistake. The mistake I made was that when I came to v. 14 (“the women said to Naomi”), I read “the woman said to Naomi” and assumed that to be Ruth. That tracks, especially considering that Ruth is referenced as “the woman” seven times in the book (Ruth 2:5—6; 3:8, 11, 14, 4:11–12). But again, I was wrong. I got sloppy with God's precious words, and there's no excuse for that.In God's kindness, my exegetical blunder didn't in any way change or even diminish the final point of my sermon. So, in one sense, it's no big deal. But in another sense, it's a huge deal. When it comes to the Scriptures, even the smallest letter and every stroke of the biblical authors' pen matter (cf. Mt 5:18). As a pastor, I'm called to be a faithful steward of God's Word. Paul tells Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly/accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15, emphasis added). And I didn't do that. James warns pastors that “we who teach will be judged with greater strictness” (Jm 3:1). And with all my heart, I want to present myself to God as one approved with no need to be ashamed. When it's my turn to stand before our gracious God, I desperately want to be able to do so with a clean conscience, knowing that I did my best. That begins with me confessing it to God (which I've done!), publicly acknowledging my mistake, and asking for your forgiveness. So, will you forgive me? Your friend, David Kakish

Hundreds rallied in front of the White House on November 8th protesting the forced resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and what many experts say is the illegal appointment of an interim AG without Congressional approval. The Confederation period is one of the most neglected aspects of United States History. And yet, it’s a very important period.
