According to a media report by Dailymail, a disabled Canadian army veteran Paralympian has blasted the Canadian government for offering to Euthanize her when she complained about how long it was taking to install a small stairlift at her home. Speaking at the House of Commons veterans affairs committee, Christine Gauthier claimed, “I have a letter saying that if you're so desperate, madam, we can offer you, MAID, medical assistance in dying,” The scandal broke a week after Canada's minister of veteran affairs revealed that at least four additional veterans had received similar offers to use the country's Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) law as a solution to their problems. The promotion of Euthanasia is definitely not a new thing. A few months ago, a secretly recorded audio surfaced in which a medical ethicist is heard raising the subject of euthanasia with a disabled patient, Roger Foley, after reminding him that he was costing the system “north of $1,500 a day.” Foley told the AP that he had never previously expressed any desire for a medically assisted death, and began recording the staff after they kept mentioning it to see if he had “an interest.” unquote. Isn't it awesome to live in a country with socialized medicine where they have to provide service but if you cost them too much they promote the idea that you should end it all. The Canadian Dictatorship under Justine Trudeau is in full vigor with his heavy-handed response to the peaceful trucker convoy protests in Ottawa and other Canadian cities. Bank accounts and crypto currency have been seized, property taken, protestors trampled by police horses and police have even threaten to seize truckers' pets to euthanize them. Will we see the same response by the Biden Administration as our own American convoy reaches Washington in time for the State of the Union Address?

According to a tweet sent by the official Ottawa police, one of the possible “enforcement actions” being taken against Canadian citizens participating in a peaceful protest against the mandates– beyond freezing their bank accounts — is that the state will confiscate their pet and, after 8 days, declare it “relinquished” if other “arrangements are not made.” This warning by the Ottawa government that protesters may have their pets be confiscated following their arrest was issued on the same day that videos emerged of Ottawa and Quebec police gearing up to go after peaceful Convoy supporters in the capital Moreover, position statements issued by the Ottawa Humane Society reveal that they may unilaterally euthanize any animal that they deem to be “not suitable for adoption.” Arbitrary behavioral and health tests would be used to make the call. These decisions about the life of a trucker's pet would, thus, be made without their consent or knowledge while they are imprisoned for indefinite periods of time via the Emergency Powers of the Trudeau regime. “Attention animal owners at [the] demonstration,” Ottawa By-law writes in a Tweet. “If you are unable to care for your animal as a result of enforcement actions, your animal will [be] placed into protective care for 8 days, at your cost. When to Euthanize a Tiger At Big Cat Rescue we have a general  decision tree that we and our vets use to determine when it is time to euthanize a big cat, but every situation is different. The vast majority of the time we just aren't sure that it is the right decision until we do the necropsy, which is the animal version of an autopsy.  The reason it is so hard to know, if we are doing the right thing, is because cats are hard wired to live the mantra of the wild; “Survival of the fittest.”   They just will not reveal their illness or their suffering until they cannot hide it any longer. We just had two situations, back to back, where we had to make the gut wrenching decision to euthanize an exotic cat.  One was an ocelot (known in Central and South America as the Tree Tiger) and the other was an actual tiger.  Both were 20-22 years old, but their histories were so different, that the decision in each case came after painful deliberation of our veterinary care team.   Amazing Grace the ocelot was 22 years old and had been with us since 1996.  She had always been robust in health and purr-sonality and had been a favorite of Keepers and Guests alike.  We knew Gracie's moods, what she liked and didn't like to eat, how to get her to relax when her hyperactivity was getting the best of her and what her favorite enrichment treats were.   When Amazing Grace came up on the Observation Chart for NOT being excited about dinner, and yet looking bloated, we knew something was wrong and scheduled a visit with our vet, Dr. Liz Wynn. Sedating a 22 year old cat is not something we would do without considerable cause, but Amazing Grace was in excellent condition and there wasn't anything we could determine about her failing to eat from just looking at her.  When she was sedated it was discovered, via blood work and being able to get our hands on her, that her kidneys were done and she had several tumors.  The bloating was from fluid filling her abdomen, which is usually a sign of a failing heart.  At 22 we did not believe that she had any chance for improvement and had to say, “Good-bye” to our precious, long time friend.   Her necropsy gave us the peace of mind that we had done the right thing for her.  It revealed that she did, in fact, have liver cancer, advanced heart disease, many other masses throughout her organs and a tiny, blister – like surface over her entire omentum (the tissue that envelopes your organs).  The second situation was even harder to make because Kimba the tiger had just been rescued 17 days before we had to make a life or death decision.  We knew almost nothing about Kimba, except that she was literally starving to death in NY and that we weren't even sure she would make it through the day that we loaded her into a transport and gave her food and water for the first time in who knows how long.   She and her two family members were all starving and dehydrated and drank 8 gallons of water between them in the first 24 hours. As soon as they arrived at Big Cat Rescue we began offering food and Zeus ate like there was no tomorrow, but Keisha and Kimba were shy about it, so we couldn't be sure if they were coming into the feeding area at night.  Within a few days, Keisha overcame her shyness and would eat while Keepers were present, but Kimba was still not packing away the chow like the other two.  We weren't sure if she was just more shy, or if she had been starved for so long that she just couldn't eat as much at any given time, so we started feeding her several times a day.  She would eat a couple bites, off a long stick, but then no more.  She was seen drinking regularly, so we just did all we could to increase her food intake, in the hopes that we could build up her strength enough to sedate her and look for anything else that may be going on.   Maybe she had bad teeth and eating was painful?  Maybe she had tumors or an obstruction that was keeping her from eating?  Maybe she had some disease?  Some things you just can't tell by looking at a tiger, no matter how well trained your eyes.   We had noticed that she was missing much of the fur from around her rump, and thought it was from sitting in her own feces in her den in New York, which was the only place she could sit that wasn't on rocks.  We wondered if the heat was too much for her, even though she had a pool and the day we rescued her it was the same temp as what we have down here.  We have overhead sprinklers and turned those on for her.  Kimba seemed happy.  She would walk around, climb up and lounge on her platforms over looking the lake, and would sleep the day away, like most tigers her age do, but she just wasn't eating enough to improve her condition any, so we had to make the scary decision to sedate a very ill, 20 year old tiger.   More about that here: http://bigcatrescue.org/now-big-cat-rescue-june-11-2014/   Her exam showed that her teeth were fine and there weren't any palpable tumors or obstructions but her blood work showed that she had a urinary tract infection and that her kidneys were in failure.  Sometimes a UTI can make kidney values worse than they really are, so we began treatment for the UTI with antibiotics and fluids.  At her advanced age, if there was any chance of turning this around, she had to get injections twice a day and 5 liters of fluids.   To do that we had to keep her in a transport wagon in the Cat Hospital and that worked for a couple of days because Kimba didn't feel good enough to try and get away from us as we tended to her feeding, watering, brushing out the dense and dead Siberian coat (with a long handled back scratcher), and washing her down with the hose to keep her cool and clean.   She would let us get about 3 liters of fluids in her before objecting and moving away and that isn't something you can force a tiger to endure. Repeated sedation would kill her for sure and add to the toxicity that her kidneys were trying to purify as well.  It looked like, no matter what we did, she was going to die.  The question was, would she do so in a tiny cage, after days or weeks of being poked with needles, or would she do so in comfort?   Since close confinement wasn't working so well, and she seemed to be in better spirits, we decided to let her back into her yard in the hopes that she would drink enough on her own and yet still come to the side of the cage to get her meds, either in her food, or via injection.  Her first day back outside she was SO happy!  You can see her pouncing around on her platforms here:  http://bigcatrescue.org/now-big-cat-rescue-june-12-2014/   But she wouldn't take the meds in food and wouldn't come to the side of the cage to be injected.  We still had to get them in her though and had to dart her with the antibiotics to ensure she was getting them.  She hated that and began hiding in her den and just growling when anyone approached.  We set up trail cams to see if she was getting up to eat or drink and she wasn't doing enough of either to survive.  Her condition was worsening and she now had gone more than a day without eating at all.   So our choices were to sedate her yet again, put her back in the transport wagon in the Cat Hospital, keep injecting her twice a day with antibiotics and keep trying to give her fluids, when she was pulling away from us after only getting a tenth of what she needed and hope for a miracle, OR let her go to sleep peacefully in the one place where she had found happiness, however brief, where she could be surrounded by her tiger family and let her last moments be that of drifting off to sleep, in the shade of her beloved platforms, while gazing out over the lake?   Along with our vets we weighed the pros and cons and decided that Kimba had overcome death for the past couple of weeks through little more than her strong will and now that she was giving up it should be on her terms in a setting that she chose.  It took us several hours and many tears to make that decision, but her necropsy showed that it was the right one for Kimba; no matter how hard it had been for us.   Four days after making the decision to euthanize Kimba we got the lab reports back and they showed that Kimba's UTI was complicated by E. coli, from the filthy conditions she was forced to live in, and that the drug we were using was the best drug for her infection. That both broke our hearts, because Kimba wouldn't have been so ill if her former owner had just cared enough to keep her cage clean, and gave us some peace in knowing that we were doing all that was medically possible for Kimba, and that if she had not responded to the drugs by now, she wasn't going to.

Mapping the Expansion of Coyote Range across the Continent In the mountain west, we simply accept the presence of coyotes on the landscape. They're simply a part of the mountain environment that we call home.  For many places though, that isn't the case. Coyotes are one of the continent's most successful predators and have always been one of the first carnivores to explore potential new habitats. But just how native are they too much of their current range? If we were to look back...waaaaay back, would we find them in the same places we encounter them today? What can we learn from their range expansions that can help us predict where they might move in the future? In a report published in the Journal Zookeys in May of 2018, biologists James Hody and Roland Kayes looked to scientifically quantify both the historic range of the coyote over the past 10,000 years, but also to look at how the influence of civilization has aided them in dramatically increasing their range. Reintroduced Banff Bison Decide to Move Towards the Prairies Last episode I crowed triumphantly at the release of Banff's new bison herd from its paddock into its 1,200 sq km release zone. This was a very exciting time that was also filled with some trepidation. Bison have not roamed free on this landscape for some 130 years, and now, here they were, able to make their own choices of how to explore their new home. It was always a possibility that some may decide to push the boundaries once they were released from the paddock. I also talked about how the bison headed off in the wrong direction that parks staff had hoped and were literally headed off at the pass and encouraged to move further into their release zone where officials hope they will stay. The goal is to use a variety of techniques to guide them until they truly settle into their new landscape. This involves a combination of baiting them to get them to move into areas with rich food rewards while also using aversive conditioning to discourage them from heading towards the open prairies where support for the release is still quite low. These massive animals have been penned up for their entire lives, either in their Banff Park pen or in Elk Island National Park in the case of the original 16 reintroduced to the park. Once the gates opened up, one direction would seem as good as any other…"I wonder what's over there…or there…or there?" In the August 9 edition of the Rocky Mountain Outlook, we learned that one of the big bulls had decided to go on a walkabout and had bolted eastward towards the prairies. It was always a risk that some of the bulls might assert their dominance and begin to head in unwanted directions. This was complicated by the fact that they had no legal protected status once they left the protection of Banff National Park and stepped onto provincial lands. This first bull was followed by a second, and unfortunately, on Aug 16 Parks were forced to Euthanize one of the two bulls when it moved into much more high-risk landscapes within provincial lands. According to a release, they stated that they: "made the difficult decision to euthanize one of the bison bulls who had continued to move eastward toward private grazing lands and was posing a risk to public safety and to the safety of livestock." Park officials ask visitors to stop making rock sculptures or Inukshuks Ever since the Vancouver Winter Olympics adopted the Inukshuk as its logo, it seems that every time visitors see a bunch of rocks, they can't help themselves. They need to pile them up into either poor renditions of Inuit rock sculpture, or they simply make a tall pile trying to balance as many stones as possible in one spot. The problem has gotten out of control in the past few years as Instagrammers began to invade the mountain wilderness. Suddenly no wild place is immune. Take a long day-hike or multi-day backpack trip and these stone piles are there to greet you and remove any feeling of wilderness you might have been enjoying up until that point. Recently Kevin Gedling, the Partnering and Engagement Officer in Jasper National Park, has asked people to stop building these geological eyesores. I Had To Put My Parent's Sweet Little Dog Down Caretaker Essay to My Parents, Pt 2 'Bailey' So, my parents found out very recently that their sweet little dog, Bailey, had been urinating on a couple spots of an expensive “Persian rug.”  The rug sits atop a new hardwood floor in their home, and the spots were directly adjacent to a very nice lo-boy cabinet.  As happens, the pee, which had been accumulating for some time, and was strong in odor, but not to my parents.  But, the pee had seeped under the lo-boy cabinet, and through the rug, soiling the hardwood floor, staining it and creating black mold along the flooring seams, all the way through to the sub floor!  A terrible mess, and my parents were understandably angry.  Before my mom's recent knee replacement surgery, she provided Bailey walks, regular potty time outside, etc.  Since arriving, I'd begun that process, but Bailey had been doing this for months. The three of us had discussed options over the past few days, and I offered to take the dog home with me to Virginia when I leave – Bailey would get along great with our two dogs, who you've met recently in the “Celebrate Your Pet Day” video, at YouTube and at the Not Old Better site, and I have the time and money to help deal with this problem. They said “Oh, but dogs cost so much money - and three dogs are more expensive than two!”  “And, Bailey will not make the trip.”  Bailey is a dog my mom received from a friend, via her will, upon this friend's death, and we think Bailey is 10 or 12 years old.   At one point two nights ago, my parents said they would get Bailey checked at the vet for urinary problems before deciding anything. The next morning, my mom, in tears, asked me to take Bailey, right then, to the vet to euthanize the dog. My mom explained that they asked a couple people if they were interested in taking her, but they weren't, the friends saying the pound would most likely euthanize a dog with urinary problems like this, and my mom is so overwhelmed with her own convalescence and care needs that Bailey wouldn't and couldn't be trained, given my mom's limited ambulatory ability.  Hearing this, I then phoned a long-time area friend, asking about ‘training.'  According to this friend, dogs can be trained to not soil indoors, but the reinforcement, after the trainer leaves is as important as the training, and in conversation with my mom, she just couldn't conduct that post trainer training herself, and Bailey was not going to learn without that reinforcement, and that if there were the urinary issues, then she did not have much hope that the he would ever get better or stop the behavior, and so they decided to have him put to sleep. A difficult subject, but a thoughtful show...please listen, and comment.  What would you do?
