The media is fretting that Donald Trump is plunging our national parks into chaos - CHAOS - because he fired the only man at Yosemite who holds the bathroom keys. No, really.Meanwhile, Maryland Democrats have passed two bills that mandate classes on gender-bending for kids as young as kindergarten, with no parental opt-out, and another that allows vending machines with condoms in all public schools - including elementary ones. And all of this is on your dime, of course.

On Tuesday, Governor Larry Hogan became the 25th Republican Governor across the country to end federal enhanced pandemic benefits for people who are out of work. Some businesses are facing worker shortages, a problem the Governor described as critical, and he said that with jobs and vaccines now in good supply, the benefits are no longer needed. The decision affects about 150,000 Marylanders, who as of July 3rd will no longer receive $300 in addition to any state unemployment support they may qualify for. Benefits also end for self-employed workers and independent contractors.Reaction to the announcement from Maryland Democrats was quick, and strongly opposed. Democratic Senate President Bill Ferguson urged the Governor to reconsider, and leaders asked Attorney General Brian Frosh to look into legislative actions the General Assembly might take to overturn the Governor's decision. Joining Tom to discuss the Governor's move is Sen. Jim Rosapepe, a Democrat who represents parts of Prince George's and Anne Arundel Counties. And Sen. Justin Ready, who represents Carroll County in the General Assembly. Senators Rosapepe and Ready join us on Zoom… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a special edition podcast to bring you an interview with a key lawmaker, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, about how Democrats will respond to Republican tax cuts. "When it comes to the tax breaks for millionaires that will definitely be revisited,'' the Maryland Democrat tells CQ's budget and tax editor Peter Cohn. Van Hollen spoke to Cohn Tuesday a day after House Republicans unveiled a new tax package. The legislation would extend two dozen expired tax breaks, revamp the IRS and offer corrections to last year’s tax code overhaul, among other things. In a wide-ranging interview, Van Hollen discussed how Democrats will respond to the new tax proposal, how his party may push to obtain President Donald Trump’s tax returns, the prospects for an infrastructure spending package, the impact of the midterm elections and the possibilities for bipartisan cooperation. He spoke at a Roll Call Live Election Impact forum hosted by FiscalNote, CQ’s parent company. Van Hollen is one of the Democratic party’s best utility players. He’s a seasoned political strategist who has chaired the campaign committees for both House and Senate Democrats. He’s also a policy wonk who is steeped in fiscal policy because of his experience on the House Ways and Means and budget committees, and currently as a Senate appropriator. Pete Tucker reveals the ignored story of voter suppression in Maryland. Plus Gerald Horne on international news and more headlines: While voting suppression tactics and irregularities in Georgia and Florida made national news this week, there was comparatively little attention to the same or worse conditions in Maryland. -In area activism news, DC Indymedia reported on a rally by Kurds outside the State Department against Turkey's renewed bombing and shelling of Kurdish communities in northern Syria. Hundreds rallied in front of the White House on November 8th protesting the forced resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and what many experts say is the illegal appointment of an interim AG without Congressional approval. Philadelphia Rapper Meek Mill spoke on the criminal justice system at Georgetown University. And thousands are expected to attend Catharsis on the Mall, through Sunday, November 11th. This fourth straight year for the event exists, according to its organizers, to create accessible spaces for healing. CORRECTION: After our deadline, Tom Hucker called to tell us that The Washington Post quote that we cited on this show was not correctly reported by the Post. Hucker said he told the Post that there is "effective voter suppression," not..."An attempt at voter suppression." Also, Maryland Democrats did lose one seat in the State Senate, though they do maintain a super majority and can override any veto by the governor.
Today, another edition of the Midday News Wrap.We begin today with U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He joins Tom by phone to comment on the roiling controversy over President Trump’s performance at his meeting Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Mr. Trump's contentious discussions the week before with America's European allies, and the President's announcement yesterday that he's invited Mr. Putin to meet again this fall -- at the White House.Meanwhile, a Russian gun rights advocate and former student at American University is in jail in Washington DC awaiting trial, accused of working as an unregistered agent of the Russian government. And Congress refuses to increase funding for election security. Episode 385 featured an interview with Kevin Kamenetz, the Baltimore County executive and Democratic candidate for governor in next month’s primary election — and his running mate, Valerie Ervin. They visited us last week. So you can imagine my shock to get a tip at 4:37 am this morning that Kevin Kamenetz had died. We confirmed the county executive’s death about an hour later, and that is today’s lead story in the Sun. Having interviewed Kevin several times over the years, I got to know him and admired his commitment to public service and his efforts at good government in Baltimore County. In answer to the question, why should Maryland Democrats vote for you in the primary: Kevin Kamenetz defended his long record in politics and public service, and he rejected the idea that being a career politician is a bad thing. In an age of increasing cynicism about politics and distrust of government, it’s easy to become suspicious of the the motives of people, like Kamenetz, who hold office over many years. But the final measure is in honest service, sustained commitment to the public and accomplishments that serve the greater good. Kevin Kamenetz takes too early such a record to his grave.
Producer's note: Kamenetz died of cardiac arrest on May 10.Why should Maryland Democrats select Kevin Kamenetz over other candidates in a crowded field of experienced politicians and first-time office-seekers hoping to become the next governor? With the candidates agreeing on most of the issues, why Kamenetz? The Baltimore County executive, hoping to win the June 26 primary to face incumbent Republican Larry Hogan in November, answers that question on today's show. And we meet the woman he chose for a running mate, former Montgomery County Council member Valerie Ervin.Links:https://elections2018.news.baltimoresun.com/governor/kevin-kamenetz/http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-kamenetz-running-mate-20180221-story.htmlhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/dan-rodricks/bal-roughly-speaking-2018-gubernatorial-candidates-storygallery.html
The latest Goucher Poll puts Maryland's Republican governor, Larry Hogan, in a strong position to win a second term. But while Maryland Democrats, who outnumber Republicans 2-1, widely approve of Hogan's job as governor, whether they vote for him in November remains an open question. Mileah Kromer, director of the Sarah T. Hughes Field Politics Center at Goucher College, talks about the poll results.
In the last of a series of introductory interviews with Democratic candidates for governor of Maryland, Dan speaks with Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, a public policy expert and one of two women seeking their party's nomination. A one-time congressional staffer, Rockeymoore Cummings is the founder of Global Policy Solutions, a Washington-based consulting company. She is the wife of Rep. Elijah Cummings, the veteran congressman from Baltimore. Rockeymoore Cummings wants to be the Democrat who challenges incumbent Republican Larry Hogan because, she says, Hogan has a limited vision for the state and has held back economic development for Baltimore by killing the Red Line light rail project and the State Center redevelopment. A special edition of Roughly Speaking, the day after Donald Trump’s sacking of the FBI director, James Comey, whose agency has been investigating suspected ties between Russia and the Trump campaign for president. Reaction from:Michael Greenberger (0:43), professor of law at the University of Maryland and a longtime attorney with extensive practice in Washington as a litigator and as a financial regulator.U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (12:26), Maryland Democrat.
“Make no mistake about it, I believe President Trump is causing damage to our country, primarily to the values America stands for.” Sen. Ben Cardin, the Maryland Democrat, stopped by the Sun’s studio to talk about the first 100 days of the Trump presidency. Cardin explains why he believes Donald Trump is damaging the country, but also where he thinks Trump could notch some achievements should he choose to act in a bipartisan manner.
1:29: Just two days after being sworn in as Maryland’s junior Senator, Chris Van Hollen took to the floor to speak out against Republican fast-track efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. On today’s podcast, Van Hollen talks about the consequences of dismantling President Obama’s signature health insurance law.18:48: Rep. Elijah Cummings criticizes congressional Republicans, including the chairman of a government watchdog committee, for not questioning President-elect Donald Trump’s extensive foreign financial holdings and the potential for conflicts in his presidency. Cummings and other Democrats have filed legislation requiring all presidents to divest of their businesses and put their assets in a blind trust. Anything short of that, says the Maryland Democrat and ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, will put Trump in violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause the day he takes office. In this podcast, Cummings also talks about the significance of the Russian hack of the 2016 election and, with President Obama scheduled to give his farewell address tonight from Chicago, the congressman reflects on the Obama years in the White House.

For our first show, we discussed political parties and how they impact our political system from the ground up. Our first interview is with Dave Kaib, a researcher at American University and the organizer of DC Jacobin and related activities in the district. Our second interview is with Kip Malinosky, a middle school civics teacher who also works as the chair of the Arlington Democrats. In between, we played the song “Mindhead” from local punk band Puff Pieces. You can find their latest album “Bland in D.C.” on Bandcamp and can follow them on Facebook to learn about upcoming shows. Call to Action Resources Local political parties are ultimately made up of small groups of activists who show up to meetings, organize canvassing and phone banks, and help to create party priorities through by influencing internal actions through their engagement. Our first call to action is a simple one: get involved with your local political party! Here are some resources to help you engage with political parties in the area. Don’t see the political party that represents you? Remember that Google is your friend! The Indivisible Guide is being used to progressive activists around the country to make their voice heard and to make life hard for GOP (and Democratic) members of Congress who choose to ignore them at their own peril. Download the guide, read up on what you can do, and join in the fun of exercising your rights to lobby your representatives.
