We discuss the fun book Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur. Most of us would recommend this second chance romance featuring a variety of LGBTQ+ representation including pansexual main characters and bi and lesbian side characters plus a queer author. We love the characters and the sex scenes were well written but we all agree a little more variety would have been appreciated.
Summary: Today, Holly and Devin explore the rest of what happens after “and they were roommates!” by discussing books featuring people who move in together. While this theme might feel squarely in Devin's wheelhouse, but not to worry - murder can happen when you move in together, too. They agree that similar to any forced proximity narrative, a roommate situation really amps up the pressure and forces both the reader and the protagonists to ask “how well do you really know someone?” Of course, for Devin's books the answer is likely “enough to tongue kiss them, at least” and for Holly… well… Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:07): Devin discussed Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur, a novel following childhood best friends Margot and Olivia after a chance encounter brings them back together…and lands them as unexpected roommates. Olivia is recently divorced and back in Seattle, as the wedding planner for Margot's best friends. Margot doesn't do relationships, but watching her best friends all get married leaves her feeling behind. Devin's key takeaways were: This sapphic romance and the wider series by Bellefleur refers frequently to astrology. Devin drew a connection between astrology and the LGBTQIA+ community, quoting Chani Nicholas from an article in the Advocate: “When a lot of the religious institutions or traditions that we come from have shunned us, on a deep soul level, we want to be seen. And when we grew up in a culture that doesn't see us, that doesn't witness our gender, that invisibilizes us, that makes us into something that we're not, we need ways of being reflected that feel true.” This book has a little bit of many of Devin's favorite tropes - mutual pining, forced proximity, childhood friends to lovers - you name it, Bellefleur crushes it. Margot and Olivia as protagonists are really well rounded, easy to empathize with, and have a lot going on in their lives beyond romantic relationships. Five chili peppers warning! This book is steamy - so graphically intimate that some folks on Goodreads knocked off stars. So beware if that isn't your thing (especially dirty talk) - but clearly it is Devin's so she highly recommends. The Dagger (19:10): Holly discussed the book 56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard, a novel with one of the best taglines ever. This Covid-era thriller starts when Oliver and Ciara have a few great dates and then strict lockdown restrictions land them as roommates… but within 56 days there's a decaying body in the apartment and detectives are left to figure out what went so horribly wrong. Holly's key takeaways were: Howard uses different points of view very effectively, especially working inside such a tight timeline from the investigation back to their first date, less than two months earlier. Her narrative structure that weaves across the timeline keeps the reader guessing as to who is the perpetrator and who is the victim. While generally it is still too soon for Holly to seek out books that include Covid, this novel worked very well because the pandemic acted as a catalyst for the plot, but wasn't *the* plot. What should be an exciting positive time at the start of moving in with a romantic partner quickly turns into a pressure cooker environment that goes from zero to 60, and Howard explores not just how little Oliver and Ciara know about each other but also how much we as the reader know and assume about our protagonists. Hot On the Shelf (34:06): Devin: Georgie All Along by Kate Clayborn Holly: The God of Endings by Jacqueline Holland What's Making Our Hearts Race (36:23): Devin: Extraordinary on Hulu Holly: Crash Landing on You on Netflix Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

When I found out that Colleen Dow was working on a solo project, I knew instantly that it would be a huge success. The amount of time and care that Colleen puts into all of their songs just tells the story. Colleen is one of the most passionate musicians out there. This solo project is no different. Abe Anderson (Niiice/Thank You, I'm Sorry) joined forces with Colleen to create this emo-pop masterpiece. There will be five songs coming our way and will come out in six week increments. Colleen knew that they wanted to do something different from Thank You, I'm Sorry. Colleen and Abe heavily experimented trying to come up with new production ideas -- even went into Abe's garage and clanged wrenches together during one of the songs. Colleen is always writing, there was a period of time where they were writing 10 songs a month. They knew that all of the songs didn't fit the sound of Thank You, I'm Sorry and could be used elsewhere. That is when this solo adventure began. Colleen talks about how we live in an age where there is acceptance behind working on one's self. There is a more comfortable space where people can be heard. Music has turned into somewhere where Colleen can channel their feelings. It's a big reason why they make so many songs. Although, Colleen will admit that there isn't always a full understanding of their emotions until hearing the song back. Throughout this episode we also chat about Thank You, I'm Sorry, being told that 18-years-old is too old to start in music, and being found by Count Your Lucky Stars on Reddit. We had Keith, Ben, Gooey, and John of Parting band on for this interview. With the four members living in three different states, the band found new ways to create their debut EP called “Unmake Me” which was released back in June with Count Your Lucky Stars. There is loads of experience in the band. Each member comes from different projects, such as the influential Empire! Empire! and Annabel The band told us about some of the obstacles they encountered because of distance while making this EP. The difference between when they were first joining bands, to now being in their 30s and having full-time jobs and families. Keith also talks about the unique names he picks for every song. Plus so much more! Bandcamp: https://partingband.bandcamp.com/album/unmake-me Instagram/Twitter: @partingband
Today on Stateside , Detroit's handling of sewage, and a system that's been overwhelmed with flooding twice already this summer. Also, thoughts on this stage of the pandemic. If herd immunity is impossible, how should we change prevention plans? And the owner of Count Your Lucky Stars records tells the story of growing a micro music scene.
This week, Wes talks to three members of the band Boyfriends about the recent reissue of their catalog. The Pennsylvania-based band existed from 2009-2012 during the emo revival of the mid to late '00s. Count Your Lucky Stars has released a complete collection of the band's works for you to enjoy.

This week's episode was an absolute blast. I had the entire band from Orlando's own, Expert Timing. There was laughing throughout most of the episode. Jeff, Katrina, and Gibran are all down to earth and all-around great people. We talked about the rather alarming loose guidelines when it comes to Covid in the state of Florida. We visited a few stories about alligators because, you know, when in Florida, right? There was a real interesting conversation about learning the music scene -- this included Katrina explaining how she picked up the bass after experiencing the DIY punk scene in Pennsylvania and attending The Fest. She even goes into what planning a tour is like. We deeply explored DIY touring. There were several fun stories like the carrying equipment down a set of steps in Philadelphia show on a snowy day, Gibran losing his wallet the first day of a tour, and playing in Canada for the first time. We heard about a secret project (not so secretive anymore) that Jeff and Katrina work on In their downtime called Weapons of Math Destruction (best name ever). Jeff explained how Count Your Lucky Stars came into the picture and the tweet that started their relationship with the record label. Jeff and Katrina talked about being married and what it's like writing the songs. Lastly, of course, we talked about their most recent release called Whichever, Whatever. I recommend giving it a listen! Also, follow the band! Links below: Bandcamp: https://experttiming.bandcamp.com Instagram: @experttiming Twitter: @expert_timing

Here is an interview I wanted to bring you for quite some time with Keith Latinen, vocalist from the band Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) and owner of Count Your Lucky Stars. I didn't know him at all, but within 10 minutes we were discussing playing in a band with your wife, how one defines success and when does a band make the next "move" up. A very revealing chat from a band that doesn't do a ton of interviews. The first day I started this podcast, a goal was to have Chris Simpson on. Through a great network of friends, it went down earlier this month and I couldn't have been happier. We had a few technical difficulties but we got to catch up on a bunch of things including the new crop of labels like Count Your Lucky Stars, The Gloria Record possibly reuniting and the amount of unreleased music that could see the light of day. Case in point, Chris has sent WashedUpEmo.com exclusively three unreleased/unheard songs. One entitled "Conclusions" is featured within the podcast.
