Indie rock pioneers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are celebrating 20 years with a special reissue. But what's the real story behind their unconventional rise to fame? In this episode of LaunchLeft, host Rain Phoenix and CYHSY frontman Alec Ounsworth, meet at Licorice Pizza in Studio City to unpack the band's journey from DIY darlings to indie rock icons. They touch on CYHSY's decision to remain unsigned. It wasn't just about rebellion, it was a commitment to artistic integrity that shaped their entire career. Ounsworth candidly discusses how his stubborn streak both helped and hindered the band's trajectory. Twenty years on, Alec reflects on how his views on collaboration and the music industry have matured. Alec then launches the up-and-coming Philly band Knifeplay, who'll be supporting CYHSY on tour. The generational exchange offers a fascinating glimpse into how the indie landscape has shifted. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the evolution of indie music and the challenges of maintaining artistic authenticity in a changing industry. IN THIS EPISODE:  (00:00) Intro: LaunchLeft podcast with Rain Phoenix (05:03) Early 2000s indie music scene and industry changes (10:27) Alec's approach to independence and a discussion about self-sabotage (15:00) CHYSY’s approach to music videos (20:55) Alec's songwriting process and lyrical influences (31:40) Knifeplay is launched and TJ joins the conversation (34:58) TJ's musical influences and background (37:37) Using social media as musicians in a digital landscape (43:24) TJ's balanced approach to using social media (48:40) Authenticity and sustainability in music careers KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Maintaining artistic integrity can be challenging but is crucial for genuine connection with audiences. The music industry has seen significant changes, making it harder for new artists to break through. Collaboration can be a way for artists to promote each other and expand their audience. Social media presents both opportunities and challenges for musicians striving to balance authenticity with promotion. A heady blend of leftfield pop and melodic, exuberant indie rock, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is unquestionably among the finest and most influential independent releases of the 2000s. The celebration officially gets underway with the premiere of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s original 2004 version of the fan favorite, “Heavy Metal”. The newly remixed and mastered track was recently discovered among the original project files and captures what Clap Your Hands Say Yeah founder and frontman Alec Ounsworth calls “a special moment in time – a young group of guys all piling into one hotel room to wake up and go to a real studio (!) to try to come up with something special just for the fun of it.”  In addition to the digital anniversary release featuring the original version of “Heavy Metal,” a special deluxe reissue will arrive on limited edition vinyl LP in early 2025, released on CYHSY’s own label via Secretly Distribution, the defiantly independent home to over two decades of Alec Ounsworth’s music. Knifeplay is a band that eludes definition, existing somewhere between the nihilistic detachment of shoegaze and the emotional honesty of folk songwriting. Originally a solo bedroom recording project of Tj Strohmer’s, they’ve made a slow and careful shift into a collaborative, production focused, studio recorded band. Through their ever-expanding genre palette, range of fidelities, and long list of collaborators runs a unique current that ties everything together. Informed by his experiences living in Philadelphia and their contrast with his rural southern Maryland upbringing, Strohmer’s sometimes straightforward, sometimes dreamlike, but always philosophical lyrics feature scenes of darkness from many different aspects of life. He deals with themes of death, drugs, heartbreak, abuse, and self-destruction, all expressed through a delicate vocal style, which, combined with the band’s lush orchestral instrumentation gives a beautiful lightness to the heavy subject matter. Since their 2017 debut of home-recorded EPs, Knifeplay have earned a dedicated cult following through acclaimed debut album Pearlty (2019) and a lengthy B-Sides Compilation (2020), all either self-released or through small run tape labels. In 2021 they entered the studio with producer Jeff Zeigler, known for his work with Kurt Vile, Nothing, The War on Drugs, and more, first producing the Hurt Someone EP (Born Losers Records) before recording their upcoming sophomore full-length, Animal Drowning, to be released via Topshelf Records on October 19, 2022.

Subsonic Eye - "Performative," from the 2023 album All Around You on Topshelf Records. Singaporean dream-pop group Subsonic Eye continue their exploration of nature on their latest LP, All Around You. This examination of the natural world around urban landscapes began on their third album, 2021's Nature of Things. "Ticking boxes / charging laptops / separating causes from ourselves," they sing on today's Song of the Day. "Nature is everywhere around you, even in the city," vocalist Nur Wahidah told Whiteboard Journal last year. "It adds something special like cycling to school. It's not just going to school — enjoying your time outside. I feel like a lot of people would think of it as like, 'oh, I live in the city, that means I can't go into nature and stuff.' But, I think we all realized that nature is everywhere around us." Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The indie record company announced this week they were royally screwed over by their main distribution company abruptly shutting down, and founder Kevin Duquette said all their inventory is being held in limbo. Ian also urges listeners to check out a new joint project by Philly bands They Are Gutting A Body Of Water and A Country Western. For Episode 136 of Look At My Records!, I was very excited to chat with the Bay Area duo Harry The Nightgown. The duo of Sami Perez (The She’s, Cherry Glazer) and Spencer Hartling just released their self-titled debut last week, and it’s a beautiful amalgamation of art-rock and maximalist experimental pop. Hartling and Perez recorded the album over the last year and a half at Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco, where they both also work as recording engineers. Tune in to hear how most of the songs came together while they were tinkering around in the studio, the lessons they learned from working at Tiny Telephone, the pros and cons of recording the album in a setting that they’re very familiar with, how their creative styles complement each other, and a whole lot more! We also geeked out over XTC and spun some additional records from Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Mantles, and Palberta. You can purchase Harry The Nightgown’s debut album on limited edition vinyl via Bandcamp. A cassette edition of the record is also available via Topshelf Records. Stream the album on your platform of choice! Keep up with the band by following them on Instagram.

Field Mouse have been a favorite band here at BTRtoday for several years now - while much has changed for the band (members, cities, styles of music) what’s still maintained all this time is the massively enjoyable musical chemistry stemming from Rachel Browne’s sweet vocals and Andrew Futral’s wily guitar antics. The addition of Zoe Browne on vocals adds a layer of perfect harmonies that only siblings can produce in just that way, rounded out by a super tight rhythm section, the band is operating to its full potential these days, with perfectly hooky, emotional songs that we just can’t get enough of. They joined us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Interviews by Brainard Carey

Bellows is the bedroom recording project of songwriter and producer Oliver Kalb. The sound of Bellows is sensory and delicate, subtle and quiet, but erupts with frantic wobbling drums, large orchestral sections and bursts of noise that push the conventions of pop and folk. Started in late 2010 in a bedroom in upstate New York, Bellows has since blossomed from a solo recording experiment into a large-scale rock band, employing the help of friends to bring Kalb's intimate home recordings to life on stage in sweeping, loud, and intense live performances. Bellows has been writing and self-producing records for the better part of the last decade, recording four full length albums and multiple shorter collections of song-a-day projects in the years since 2011’s As If To Say I Hate Daylight, a quietly brooding album recorded on a single microphone, for which Kalb challenged himself to create a large, fully orchestrated blanket of sounds without the use of synthesizers or any digital sounds. Over the next eight years, Bellows’ palate of sounds has expanded and changed with each successive album. On Blue Breath (2014), which Kalb recorded over the course of three years in several cities across the United States, dozens of strange sounds were layered over would-be humble folk songs, resulting in a soaring pop record that tread the line between minuscule and gigantic. Blue Breath was named one of Bob Boilen of NPR's All Songs Considered's favorite records of 2014. Bellows’ third album Fist & Palm (2016) meditated on the ending of a friendship, contrasting its stark and gutting lyrics with warm pop and dance-music based orchestrations of fluttering synthesizers, drum machines, choir harmonies and strings. Fist & Palm was featured twice on Stereogum’s 100 Best Songs of 2016 list. Bellows' latest album The Rose Gardener was released on Topshelf Records in February 2019.

This week, Craig chats with his first music guest, Sai Boddupalli, of the bands Animal Flag and People Like You. Sai is the child of Indian immigrants, and his experience of being raised in an Indian household contains a number of great stories that you get to hear on this episode! Sai was raised by a very musical father, and that influence led to him becoming a musician as well. While completing his undergraduate studies at Berklee College of Music, Sai became a very active member of the Boston music scene - where he currently resides. In this chat, we cover his experience as a person of color in the DIY scene and in music spaces that are traditionally populated by white cishet dudes. We discuss the importance of representation and diversity in music, as well as the realities of touring and signing to record labels. EPISODE NOTES: - Sai just finished a six-week tour with his rock band, Animal Flag, of which was recently featured on Audiotree. - The two earliest albums to influence Sai were "Kid A," from Radiohead and the self-titled Rage Against the Machine album.  - Representation is important because if it weren't for "All Killer no Filler," by Sum 41 and Sai recognizing Dave Baksh of Sum 41 as a fellow Indian, we may not have the Sai we know now. - If you haven't check out the diversity of sounds that Topshelf Records has to offer, you really need to get on that now! - Animal Flag recently did a number of gigs alongside the magnanimously talented performer, Chad Matheny, otherwise known as, Emperor X. His new album, "Oversleepers International," is an eccentric collection of songs - out now on Tiny Engines. - You can see People Like You and meet up with Sai while on their east coast tour that starts this weekend! For tour dates, visit http://www.topshelfrecords.com/roster/people-like-you. - Make sure to read this piece on the othering of people by Edward Said. - We quickly plug two great Boston-area organizations, BARCC (Boston Area Rape Crisis Center), as well as the Democracy Center. Visit their sites for more information! - Sai and I are both currently enjoying the new Big Thief album, "Capacity," so don't say we didn't warn you! - Check out the "Short History of Nearly Everything," by Bill Bryson. - Sai also suggests checking out the book from "A Breath of Fresh Air," by Amulya Malladi. MUSIC NOTES: - All of the music on this week's podcast is provided by People Like You - in which Sai plays the bass guitar. The band was recently signed to Topshelf Records, which will be releasing their new LP, "Verse," on July 28th. It is chock-full of tasty jazzy emo tunes. - The intro, outro, and ad breaks feature parts of the song, "Variations on an Aria." - Today's music break song is, "Thumbnail," which was recently premiered by the band. - You can PREORDER the new People Like You album on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital by visiting http://www.topshelfrecords.com/products/593720-people-like-you-verse!  - As referenced in the podcast, a portion of the proceeds from the new People Like You album's pre-order sales will be divided equally and go directly to The Trevor Project, The NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Planned Parenthood. ADVERTISING NOTE: - This week we were sponsored by our friends in Safer Scenes, who are currently on the road with War on Women during the Vans Warped Tour. Safer Scenes is dedicated to educating younger crowds at festivals and in typical concert venues on harmful and problematic issues that plague scenes - explicitly sexual assault, sexual violence, bullying, misogyny. - You can donate to support the Safer Scenes folks by visiting their GoFundMe page! And if you donate at least $75, I will make you a piece of art - since my nonprofit, The Art of Survival, is sponsoring War on Women and Safer Scenes during their Warped Tour travels. Braid. Hey Mercedes. Two of Trav's favorite bands. The cool thing is you can talk to one Bob Nanna and cover both. First we have a few records to talk about. Then Stephen tells one of those stories that reminds you that it could be embarrassing to go "commando". Bob Nanna tells us about the space between the end of Braid and the beginning of Hey Mercedes and how it went down in Hawaii. Hear about how Hey Mercedes met their tour manager Chris on the Vagrant tour. Bob Nanna was nice enough to open up about a cancer scare, yet how he somehow found the peace to not let it be a scare...plus he got a hat out of it so that's cool. Cancer sucks. We are all getting older every day and there comes a time where we have to make smarter decisions about our health. Drink more water, folks. He reminds us that when you go see a band they didn't just come from their tour bus fully rested...sometimes they didn't even sleep the night before. Remember that. Bob is involved in something pretty special called Downwrite, where you can hire a songwriter to write a customized song just for you. It's a really neat, intimate approach and I recommend the site. Just scroll around and see who's involved. Bob is covering his top 100 songs (yeah...) all the way up to his favorite song "Chesterfield King" by Jawbreaker. Thanks for listening. We love you. Take care. Bye-bye. What happens when you put five people in a room to discuss the emo revival? Lots and lots of laughs. Late last year, CMJ asked Washed Up Emo to moderate a panel to discuss the revival and we were up the task. For the panel we had a great group of young and old perspectives with Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason, Collect Records), Kevin Duquette (Topshelf Records), Sean Moran (No Sleep Records) and Brian Pacris (The Syndicate, co-host of #EmoNightNYC). See? Emo ain't all about sadness. (Note: We only had three microphones so it may be hard to hear some questions from the audience.) Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

Trying something new, this was my first ever "live" podcast recording. Recorded at the Suburbia venue in Brooklyn, NY and featuring mini-interviews with the residents of the house space, MA/NY's The Saddest Landscape (Topshelf Records), PA/FL's Direct Effect (Tiny Engines), and New Jersey's Capacities. Thanks to everyone involved for putting up with my unprofessional dorkiness. Recorded on May 22nd, 2014.Short episode, runs at about 30+ minutes or so. Bear with me, it was the first live recording and I didn't want to overdo it. Also, aired completely unedited, another first. PLAYLISTScreeching Weasel - "Hey Suburbia"Living Room - "Red Saints"The Saddest Landscape - "This Heals Nothing"Direct Effect - "Solar Flare"Capacities - "The Unexamined Life"
