Send us a textA tailbone crash on a triangle rock. A season of strange falls and late-race cramping. And then a decision to tear it all down and rebuild. We sit with Dan Curts to map the truth behind his 2025 campaign, from a promising start at Canyons to a frustrating run through Iger, ETC, and Plitz Alpin Glacier. The thread is unglamorous and vital: when the posterior chain shuts down, quads overwork, climbing implodes, and even the best descenders can't press when it matters.Dan walks us through a hard reset with coach Jack Kenzel—starting with a track-based drift test to lock in real aerobic limits, adding heavy strength to hit a baseline of force, and then pressing the volume button with sustained climbs, daily vert, and technical footwork. We dig into why he believes cramping is a muscular endurance problem more than a bottle problem, how heart rate caps keep ego in check, and why Northeast granite and mud might prep athletes better for Europe than endless sunshine ever will.We also zoom out. Short trail is growing, but it needs stars, live coverage, and sharper storytelling. Dan shares what Europe gets right—stacked fields, iconic venues, and snackable highlight reels—and how U.S. races can catch up with consistent live streams, honest athlete recaps, and creative embeds that show how fast “runnable” really looks. Gear matters too: lighter, grippier shoes like the Cascadia Elite change what's sustainable at speed on wet rock and alpine grass, expanding both safety and excitement. If you care about subultra trail, this is the blueprint: build durability, race smart, tell the story well, and make it easy to watch. Hit play, then tell us—what race do you want live-streamed next? And if you're new here, follow, share, and drop a quick review so more runners can find the show.Follow Dan on IG - @dancurtsFollow James on IG - @jameslauriello Follow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_pod Use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

In this episode, Crystal River City Manager Audra Curts shares her deep experience in hurricane preparedness and disaster recovery, with a special focus on the unique challenges small cities face. Audra reflects on being hit by Hurricane Helene just two days into the job, followed by Hurricane Milton a week later, and the flooding of City Hall from Hurricane Idalia before her arrival.Audra draws from her past roles in city and school district leadership, including her time as CFO for Polk County schools during the 2004 hurricanes. She explains how storm recovery often requires cities to front costs long before FEMA or insurance funds arrive, making financial reserves and intergovernmental cooperation essential. From managing recovery for over 160 school sites to navigating citywide disaster impacts, Audra encourages proactive planning, strong departmental coordination, and the importance of having flexible funding options ready. Her insights offer a valuable blueprint for local governments preparing for and responding to major storms.

Send us a textThe mountain running world is buzzing as defending champion Dan Kurtz prepares to face an elite field at the upcoming Sunapee Scramble. Fresh off a dedicated altitude training block in Boulder, Colorado, Dan takes us inside his unorthodox preparation—from living in a van and training on the steepest lines of Green Mountain to battling blizzards and mechanical breakdowns on his way to winning the Canyons 25K.Dan doesn't shy away from discussing the pressure he feels to defend his title and earn another spot on the World Mountain Running team. His candid reflections on training alongside mountain running stars Kyle Richardson and Johnny Luna Lima reveal the camaraderie and competitive edge that's sharpened his preparation. The conversation takes an intriguing turn when discussing his budding rivalry with Mason Kopi following their head-to-head battle on Boulder's notorious Sanitas Challenge—a contest that clearly still fuels Dan's competitive fire. With remarkable insight, Dan breaks down his race strategy for Sunapee's demanding two-loop course, analyzing how he'll approach the aggressive early pace from competitors and leverage his technical descending skills. His knowledge of the course—right down to his preference for minimal Asics Asheels on the potentially muddy terrain—showcases the meticulous preparation of an elite athlete who understands exactly what's required to succeed. Whether you're following the elite mountain running scene or simply fascinated by what it takes to compete at the highest level, this raw and revealing pre-race conversation captures both the physical and mental preparation behind championship-level mountain running. Don't miss this glimpse into the mind of one of America's premier mountain runners as he readies himself for one of the season's most anticipated showdowns.ollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Send us a textFrom track star to mountain master, Dan Curts path to the pinnacle of sub-ultra trail running defies conventional wisdom. While many elite athletes flock to western training hubs like Boulder or Flagstaff, Kurtz has embraced the harsh New England winters and technical terrain of his Northeast home. "Four below this morning," he mentions casually, "but that teaches you something that has to translate to real mountain running."After a collegiate career at Iowa State that left him questioning his relationship with running, Kurtz found renewed purpose in mountain races. Now a three-time Team USA representative who has competed at World Championships in Thailand and Innsbruck, he offers rare insights into the challenges and rewards of pursuing excellence on the trails. His candid discussion about breaking his toe in Thailand, rebuilding fitness through skiing, and preparing for the upcoming season reveals the unfiltered reality of professional trail running. The conversation explores fascinating territory beyond racing, from van life and Brooks' emergence as perhaps "the best sub-ultra trail team on the planet" to the neurological aspects of race-day cramping. Kurtz makes a compelling case for the Northeast as an underappreciated training ground, suggesting that the increased presence of high-profile races like the Cirque Series might finally bring deserved attention to the region. With honest reflections on the pressure to make another World Championship team and admiration for innovators like Jack Kenzel and Jim Walmsley, this episode offers a window into the mind of an athlete operating at the cutting edge of mountain running's evolution.Want to hear more from the athletes reshaping trail running? Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guest on today's show is Matt Curts. Matt has a long and storied career. As a long-time CFO, he has a lot of experience working on businesses through the numbers. But, as Matt continued to lean into his passion and purpose, he realized that purpose and the pursuit of purpose is not limited to just a few but should be possible for everyone. He made the decision to leave corporate life and move into a ministry position within his church for four years, which ultimately led him on the path to co-found his current company Switchback. He's passionate about giving away friendships and developing pathways for both leaders and team members to discover their whole life's purpose. In this conversation, Matt and I talk about the importance of culture in an organization, how practice owners should think about something as “intangible” but important as culture, some of the limitations he's observed with personality profiles, the importance of nurturing a team member in their career to increase productivity, and what tools they can consider using to intentionally work on the culture in their organization. He also shares what it was like for him and his wife Stephanie (who is the OD) to take over a long-and-solo-owned, small-town based private practice and what that experience meant to both he and Stephanie as well as the team and former owner. He also talks about a process they use called “Life-mapping” to help team members better connect with their purpose and thus increase their connectedness to the practice, which thus increases their efficiency and ultimately the profitability of the practice. He also talks about why it's important to stop looking for what's wrong and start looking for what's right in team members and within the practice. As a reminder, you can get all the information discussed in today's conversation by visiting our website at integratedpwm.com and clicking on the Learning Center. While there, be sure to subscribe to our monthly “planning life on purpose” newsletter that's filled with tips and ideas to help you plan life on purpose. You can also set up a Triage conversation to learn a little bit more about how we serve in the capacity of a personal and professional CFO: helping OD practice owners around the country reduce their tax bill, proactively manage cash flow, and make prudent investment decisions both in and out of their practice to ultimately help them live their best life on purpose.
