Artists starting to rage quit WotC after the company gaslighted fans over the use of AI art. Notable MTG artist Dave Rapoza publicly said he's no longer doing work for the Hasbro-owned game company, and we expect others to follow suit. It's not that WotC is using AI at all. It's that they made a huge deal about not using it after being called out on MULTIPLE occasions. And they're ramping up its usage after laying off over 1,000 employees. Additional Context: Dave Rapoza, a prominent artist for "Magic: The Gathering," resigned from Wizards of the Coast following a controversy involving the use of AI-generated artwork in promotional materials for the game. The issue began when fans and artists, including Rapoza, noticed inconsistencies in some promotional images, leading to suspicions that they were generated using AI tools. Despite initial refutations from Wizards of the Coast, the company eventually admitted to the use of AI in these materials. In response to this revelation, Wizards of the Coast issued a statement asserting their commitment to keeping AI-generated artwork out of their promotional material. They acknowledged the need to update their processes with external vendors, especially concerning marketing images on social media, to support human creativity, which they consider crucial to the "Magic" franchise. The company also emphasized their existing policy requiring artists, writers, and other creatives working on "Magic: The Gathering" to refrain from using AI generative tools for final products. Rapoza, however, was dissatisfied with the company's handling of the situation. In a statement, he criticized Wizards of the Coast for not being transparent and for contradicting their stance against AI use. He highlighted the importance of integrity and attention in standing for a cause. Rapoza also noted that while he has the privilege to quit and work with other studios, he understands that not all artists have the same flexibility, especially those who rely solely on Wizards of the Coast for their livelihood. The incident underscores the growing tension in the art world regarding the use of AI-generated art and the ethical considerations surrounding its use in professional settings. It also highlights the need for transparency and consistency in policy implementation, especially in creative industries where human creativity and originality are highly valued Clownfish TV is an independent, opinionated news and commentary channel that covers Entertainment and Tech from a consumer's point of view.
