From the World of John Wick....this is techically a spin-off which takes place between the events of John Wick Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, the focus here is on Eve who is played by Ana De Armas. Eve is an assassin who was initially trainied as as a ballerina, hence the title! The Director of her "academy" is Angelica Huston who was also featured as a character in Chapter 3. Eve is seeking revenge against a rival organization which murdered her father when she was a young child - that organization is lead by The Chancellor played by Gabriel Byrne. And off she goes from New York City throughout Northern Europe on an increasingly violent adventure where she is tasked with defeating rival assassins through a variety of methods including her fists, grenades, flame throwers, knives, and dishes. ;) Along the way, she also encounters the "Baba Yaga" himself, John Wick once again played by Keanu Reeves. Ken Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard, Underworld) directs with a supporting cast also including Ian McShane, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and in sadly his final on-screen appearance, the late great Lance Reddick. We present our review of Ballerina (2025)!Ballerina (marketed as From the World of John Wick: Ballerina) is a 2025 American action thriller film, directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten. It is the fifth installment in the John Wick franchise, and it is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and Chapter 4 (2023). It stars Ana de Armas as the ballerina/assassin Eve Macarro, alongside Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus. Among those reprising their roles from the previous films include Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick (in his final screen appearance), Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves.Lionsgate acquired Hatten's spec script for the spin-off film in 2017, leading to him contributing to the final script for Parabellum and serving as the lead writer for Chapter 4. In October 2019, Wiseman was hired as director; Chad Stahelski, who had directed the previous John Wick films, was confirmed as a producer by May 2020. Ballerina was officially announced in April 2022, with de Armas confirmed as the lead. Principal photography occurred from November 2022 to January 2023 in Prague; additional action sequences were shot starting in February 2024.Ballerina was released in the United States on June 6, 2025. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, which will probably take the cake as the longest movie title of the year, has FINALLY hit theaters. If you couldn't tell from the title, this is the LONG delayed John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas, which actually takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4. It has, by the way, now been over two years since John Wick: Chapter 4 came out. Time flies, but that also means that my excitement for this film has just been waning and waning since it was announced. This expansion of the John Wick universe is probably one of the most baffling things I've seen from Hollywood recently. As interesting as the world of John Wick is, I still wholeheartedly believe that Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski's action directing is the draw of those movies. Add on top of my skepticism of turning everything into a cinematic universe all the news of this movie not really working and needing multiple rounds of reshoots, I went in skeptical. So, is Ballerina a worthy addition to the franchise? Find out in this review! From the World of John Wick: Ballerina:Directed by: Len WisemanWritten by: Shay HattenBased on characters created by: Derek KolstadProduced by: Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Chad StahelskiExecutive Producers: Kaley Smalley Romo, Louise Rosner, Kevan Van ThompsonMusic by: Tyler Bates, Joel J. This week Dave braved writer-director Mike Flanagan's adaption of Stephen King's THE LIFE OF CHUCK (3:19) and deems it strangely affecting despite not being in love, generally, with the weird maudlin nostalgia of King's non-horror work. Then Megan, Evan, and Dave weigh in on (this is actually its full title) FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK: BALLERINA (20:47). It largely works for Evan, kind of works for Dave, and Megan didn't like it much at all, though they all agree it has some great action set pieces and it's always good to see the late Lance Reddick. Over on Patreon, we discuss the 1985 slasher-legal thriller JAGGED EDGE.
"From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina" (or just "Ballerina" for short) is the fifth film in the "John Wick" franchise, serving as a spin-off set between the events of "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum" (2019) and "John Wick: Chapter 4" (2023). It is the first installment not to be directed by Chad Stahelski, with action director Len Wiseman taking over the reins and featuring Ana de Armas in a new role while Keanu Reeves, Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick (in his final screen appearance before his untimely death), and Ian McShane reprise their roles from the franchise. Wiseman was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Prophecy Radio episode #125 sees Karen and Kristen back on our usual path, including a few detours while we talk about our excitement over the Wicked movie in theaters as well as the Greek-themed updates to Disney Dreamlight Valley courtesy of the expansion pass. We do also talk about chapter 21 of Chalice of the Gods, as well as continuing to talk about our future and plans for the podcast. As of right now, new episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week, and we'll still keep our discussions PG-13. We are so excited to talk about these casting choices! (00:09:50) We are so proud of ourselves for getting our act together and kicking off our new schedule right away! Daniel Diemer will be bringing Tyson to the screen! Andra Day is absolute perfect embodiment of Athena (we're both in awe). Tamara Smart absolutely looks the part of Thalia Grace, and we can't wait to see how she chooses to play Thalia. Lance Reddick's replacement for Zeus is… We will definitely get at least one episode of season 2 in 2025! Chalice of the Gods refresher (00:26:36) Percy needs to complete 3 quests to get letters so he can join Annabeth at New Rome University. Ganymede, Zeus' cupbearer, to finds the chalice of the gods. He suspects Hebe and Iris. They find a chalice-less Hebe (and her flock of chickens) at her arcade, and after a little creative trickery by Annabeth, our trio learns where they might find Iris. Meet Blanche, daughter of Iris, who loves all things monochrome and death. She promises to introduce them to her mother if Grover poses for some photos. Iris is desperate for her child's approval, so she listens to our favorite trio, and tells them she has a hunch. She won't share that hunch, however, unless our trio does a little quest for her first. While questing, Annabeth befriends a river, Percy almost drowns, Grover gets chased by snakes. Percy gives us his (arguably) most romantic moment yet, and saves himself from mortal peril. Once they return Iris' staff to her, clean as a whistle, she lets them know the chalice is in Greenwich in the possession of someone named Gary, and hands them a vial of pure nectar to help in locating the famous drinking vessel. Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:34:26) Grover arrives to Percy's swim meet in some very specific regalia. Percy is forced to look at Blanche's dreary photos of Grover appearing dead amongst very dead-looking nature. Grover had planned to give one of these photos to Juniper for her Bloom Day present, but she didn't react well to the repeated mentioning of Blanche. Percy advises that Grover admit his stupidity in this moment, and apologize to Juniper. Percy notes that, next to the Greek gods, he's possibly the worst person to give relationship advice. Grover asked the cloud nymphs about Greenwich village, scoping out the scene before they go adventuring there, and they admit to some weird energy around Washington Square Park. While getting Juniper's Bloom Day present right is important, Grover is more concerned with how things are going to work once Percy and Annabeth run off to New Rome University. Percy reassures our favorite satyr that they need him as much as he needs them. They couldn't survive without Grover in their lives. Favorite lines and favorite moments. Feedback! Thank you so much to everyone for all the kinds words on our return. It really means the world to us. This time around, Arthur's buddy Noah hops onboard for a discussion on Godzilla vs. Kong, the 2021 sequel to Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the fourth entry in the Monsterverse. Running through the various movies on which GVK cinematographer Ben Seresin has worked, arching an eyebrow at the casually positive lens that this movie aims at conspiracy theories, and praising all the gorgeous lighting (especially in the neon-lit Hong Kong brawl) make up a few of the topics that this episode covers. Directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgård, Kaylee Hottle, Brian Tyree Henry, Millie Bobby Brown, Julian Dennison, Demián Bichir, Eiza González, Shun Oguri, Kyle Chandler, Lance Reddick, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, and Ronny Chieng. The Caine Mutiny (1954) is based on Herman Wouk's bestselling Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. The film, directed by Edward Dmytryk and produced by Stanley Kramer, portrays the fictitious events on board the U.S.S. Caine, a Navy destroyer-minesweeper in the Pacific during World War II. Executive officer, Lt. Stephen Maryk (Van Johnson), relieves the seemingly unstable Lt. Commander Philip Francis Queeg, Captain of the USS Caine, of his command after Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) endangers the ship and its crew during a cyclone. The ship returns to the U.S. and Maryk is court-martialed for mutiny. He is represented by Navy lawyer, Lt. Barney Greenwald (José Ferrer), who despite disapproving of Maryk's actions, believes Maryk was misled by the ship's communications officer, Lt. Tom Keefer (Fred MacMurray), into believing Queeg was mentally unfit for command. Maryk is acquitted after Greenwald effectively places Queeg on trial by his exposing Queeg's erratic and paranoid behavior. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (2023), directed by the late William Friedkin, is based on Wouk's adaption of his own 1951 novel for the stage. In contrast to the 1954 film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial covers only the court-martial. The cast includes Jake Lacy as Maryk, Jason Clarke as defense attorney Greenwald, Monica Raymund as prosecutor Lt. Commander Katherine Challee, the late Lance Reddick as the presiding judge Captain Luther Blakley, and Kiefer Sutherland in a phenomenal performance as Queeg. The films are not only gripping courtroom dramas, but also explore larger themes around military justice, ethics, and morality. With me to discuss these films is Eugene (Gene) Fidell, a visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and co-founder of the National Institute of Military Justice.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction3:58 What's a court-martial?9:14 The crime of mutiny17:48 Relieving Queeg of his command27:36 Putting Queeg on trial29:33 Taking some poetic license with a court-martial34:44 The defense lawyer's post-trial critique of the mutiny41:21 The dramatic changes in the Navy and armed forces since the original movie 47:12 More context for the two Caine Mutiny movies50:21 Other great movies about military justice Further reading:“The Humphrey Bogart Blogathon: ‘The Caine Mutiny' (1954),” Dec. 23, 2016, https://back-to-golden-days.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-humphrey-bogart-blogathon-caine.htmlKelly, Kevin M., “You Murdered Queeg: Lawyers, Ethics, Military Justice, and ‘The Caine Mutiny,'” 1991 Wis. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 38 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the final film in their William Friedkin series, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (2023). After a 12-year absence from making a feature film, William Friedkin returned with a faithful, reverent adaption of one of the most celebrated plays of all time, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. Being a movie he'd wanted to make his entire career, the film came together over the course of two months in early 2023; a modern, relevant version of Herman Wouk's classic text, only to sadly pass away before the film premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. For a final film, it is a perfect end to a celebrated career by one of Hollywood's most unique directorial talents. With an extraordinary cast lead by incredible performances from Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Clarke, Ryan and Jay break down Friedkin's last film, the modern setting of his adaption, Lance Reddick's career, the film's explosive ending, favorite court room dramas, and they give their definitive rankings of William Friedkin's filmography. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h48m. The guys will be back next week to begin their new series covering the films of Sofia Coppola with a review of her debut film, The Virgin Suicides. You can stream the film on Pluto TV. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. This week, Lovett temporarily left it, asking the brilliant Guy Branum to steer the ship in his stead. Lance Reddick teaches us from Ron DeSantis's new Florida AP African-American Studies course, and tries to differentiate between the villains of the MCU and the villains of the GOP. River Butcher and Guy crack open a nice cold round of Gay News. One of the Mars Wrigley employees who fell in a molten vat of chocolate (Ana Gasteyer) stops by to talk about labor activism, the upcoming writers strike, and the crushing weight of molten chocolate. We end the show by collectively pitching the aliens (which absolutely are here now, right?) on reasons not to blow up the planet. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here.
