At the heart of the Salish Sea lies the Fraser River Estuary: home to over half of the population of the Province of British Columbia, thousands of endemic species, and one world-famous pod of orcas. But as the human population of the region has grown, wildlife populations — including salmonids, orcas, and over 100 species at risk — have been plummeting. As economic imperatives press up against ecological thresholds, a mega-project that has been in development for over a decade is poised to further alter the character of the estuary, with massive implications for the health of Salish Sea and its many residents. In this episode, we ask: can we find ways to hear each other through all the noise? This episode was originally published in March 2022. It’s like the storyline out of a bestselling book. In the middle of a political battle for the life of a nation and a virus that takes the lives of 1000’s of its citizens,  a  black man dies at the hands of a police offer while his squad looks on. The truth is caught on a phone camera and shown to The World. Days later..citizens all over America and The World are walking, shouting and rioting in protest and a slogan from 2013 reappears,  Black Lives Matter and THIS TIME It appears the message is actually getting through. Dawn Pemberton is a wonderful singer, songwriter, and educator who shows up on albums all the time plus her own release  “Sayin’ Something” She leads The Roots and Wings choir..tours with The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer sits in with the Good Noise Choir, and tries to lead by example. Her father was born in St Kitts.  Her Mother in Barbados. They moved to Canada and restarted their lives. Dawn has lived in Canada all her life and still has to deal with racism. Who better to share her feelings on Black Lives Matter and the movement on the streets than Dawn Pemberton. My thanks to The Shouting Hour last Sunday who showed the way.

By Adam Olenn | April 20, 2012 2003 alumnus BJ Block was working on a sequel to his album Glitterball when he met Vancouver vocalist Dawn Pemberton. A staple of the Vancouver music scene, Pemberton was initially slated to record some background vocals for Block's instrumentals. One writing session later, it was clear that these two musicians had found a powerful creative connection, and the project morphed into their 2010 release The Land of Make Believe. Initially approached as a children's album for grown-ups, The Land of Make Believe explores adult challenges through the eyes of a child. The album, which was nominated for Urban Album of the Year by the Western Canadian Music Awards, was released worldwide through a Creative Commons license. During its two weeks on file-sharing site Frostwire, The Land of Make Believe was downloaded over 240,000 times, and earned Block and Pemberton a global following that has fully funded their next album through Kickstarter.
