CW: This episode contains discussions of alcoholism and cinematic violence including animal cruelty. The writer, comedian and musician Patrick Marlborough returns to the podcast from Perth, WA to discuss Wake in Fright (1971), the landmark Australian film by the late Canadian director Ted Kotcheff. One of only two films to be shown twice in the history of the Cannes Film Festival, and influential in shaping both the Australian New Wave and Ozploitation genres, Wake in Fright was acclaimed around the world but outraged local audiences with its brutal and merciless depiction of Australian toxic masculinity, violence, and alcoholism.Patrick gives us some insight on how Wake in Fright captures some of the ugliest aspects of the Australian national character, and we discuss how Kotcheff's Canadian-ness was an asset for his outsider's view of this world, the amazing supporting performance by Aussie comic screen icon Chips Rafferty in his final role, and how this great film was nearly lost forever. I meant to upload this last week but I was in Australia losing my mind crossing the outback like the narrator of What's Rangoon to You Is Grafton To Me (which no one out there seems to know, let alone have any interest in ABC radio, TISM, Wake in Fright, Ozploitation cinema, that guy that walked around talking to people on the street on TV, or even the morning show I turned on upon arrival at my airbnb that was referring to orange and ham pizza as "Christmas Pizza" before segueing into cockroach milk). So anyway, here it is now.President Crooks continues to go Bucko wild, necessitating at least one well meaning bleep from me and making Jennifer uncomfortable. He talks a bit about the history of noise, the types of noisers, Milwaukee's wild rap scene, and some other bits (Australians and their oppressively close sun got me calling everything "bits" now). Pulled a couple of really old Smudge tracks from Bucko's Bandcamp, at least one dating back to the Galactic Intolerance Records days on archive.org. Check out the rest of what remains of his discography over at http://thesmudge.bandcamp.comAlso, check out the zine/documentary-ish thing we made about his Milwaukee Noise Fest and our trip to Fargo, the Arbitrary Art. Be the first to download or buy a copy at my gumroad http://thearbitraryart.gumroad.com or glance at the unlisted video Bucko put up that I generally pretend does not exist. Or if you're in Philly look for an unmarked DVD in a yellow sleeve that I occasionally drop in Little Free Blockbusters.

That's right, love is in the air and a murderous demon entity is on our trail as we explore IT FOLLOWS for its 10th anniversary!! Along the way, we dig into the fabulous grab bag of horror and cultural influences that are woven into fabric of the film, explore the post-collapse aesthetic of Detroit, wonder why all these parents are so disconnected from the world their kids occupy, and debate the mainstream idea that the movie is a “casual sex is bad” horror. Cinematographer James Hoare is a recent graduate from Curtin University, where he worked alongside director Christopher Paik-Swan and writer Max Joyce to bring to life their final year short film Don't Talk About the Monster on the Roof, a micro-budget horror short flick inspired by the look of Ozploitation films. It's an impressively taut thriller that is drenched in sweaty tension as a group of mates head off on a road trip up to the Pinnacles, only to find that while on the trip, they each start disappearing one by one after something on the roof of the car rips them away.James' work as the cinematographer saw him utilising LED virtual production technology, alongside drone shots and on location cinematography. He comfortably blends the VFX backgrounds with on location shots, culminating in an effective and creatively engaging short that executes high concept ideas on a student budget.James was also able to present the film at the 2024 CamerImage Festival in Poland as part of their Talent Demo program. At the festival, he was able to present the film and receive detailed feedback from celebrated filmmakers like cinematographer Jarin Baschkle (Nosferatu, The Lighthouse) and director Hiro Murai (Atlanta, Mr and Mrs Smith). In the following interview, recorded ahead of the films screening at the WA Made Film Festival on Saturday 22 February as part of the Saturday Shorts line-up, James talks about his creative journey to becoming a cinematographer, what it means to be able to make films in Western Australia, and a lot more. The line-up for this years WA Made Film Festival is a stellar one, with a huge array of shorts, long shorts, features, documentaries, and a panels galore to keep you up to speed on the ins and outs of the WA film scene. The festival opens with the world premiere of Remotely Famous, directed by Brad Newland. The excitement for that is so high that the screening has already sold out. The energy continues over the weekend with a live Cinema Australia podcast recording with Matthew Eeles and director Zak Hilditch, short film showcases, screenings of award winning films like Genocide in the Wildflower State, world premieres of films like Lint, Christmas Orphans, In Sect, and Highest Treason, while acclaimed films like Jellyfish, Green: The Fight for Rock and Roll, and Everywhere get spotlight screenings.I'm proud to be part of this years festival as I join a panel of excellent WA filmmakers for The Future is Bright: Independent Filmmaker Panel on Saturday 22 February from 11:45am at the City of Perth Library Auditorium. The panel includes Sarah Legg, Tayah Lee-Traub, Steven J. Mihaljevich, Emilie Lowe, Lawrence Murphy, and Oscar Miller, each of whom will be discussing their upcoming feature films which were made completely independently.I'm continually in awe of the work that Jasmine Leivers and Matthew Eeles put into bringing the WA Made Film Festival together. It's a top tier local film festival that reminds audiences that there is a vibrant, active, and downright vital film scene in operation here in Western Australia. For all the details on the festival, and to secure your tickets, visit WAMadeFilmFestival.com.au. Like what you're hearing? Let us know!Discover the enigmatic world of Australian cinema with us as Super Marcy from the Super Network joins the conversation about the 1980 thriller "Harlequin." Imagine the intrigue of a political family meeting a mysterious healer—this is just the tip of the iceberg as we unravel the film's captivating narrative surrounding the Rast family and the elusive Gregory Wolf. Spearheaded by talents like Robert Powell and David Hemmings, and guided by director Simon Wincer and screenwriter Everett DeRoche, we explore how "Harlequin" stands as a unique gem within the Ozploitation genre. Reflect on how this film fits into the broader tapestry of Australian cinema, and why it's a must-watch on platforms like Australia's Broly. From political thrillers to historical mysteries, the episode takes a fascinating detour into the real-life enigma of former Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt. Vanished without a trace, his disappearance sparked wild theories, from CIA abduction to submarine escapes, and we ponder the irony of a swimming pool bearing his name. We even draw unexpected parallels between this national mystery and the triumphant moment in rugby league history when the Cronulla Sharks finally claimed victory, "turning off the porch lights" and ending decades of anticipation for their loyal fans.Peel back the layers of "Harlequin" as we dissect its themes of illusion versus reality, and liken Gregory Wolf's character to historical figures like Rasputin. From practical effects to Brian May's haunting score, we appreciate the artistry that sets this film apart from typical Ozploitation offerings. With lively discussions on its ambiguous scenes and the performances that bring tension and depth to the screen, this episode is an invitation to rediscover a film that challenges perceptions and captivates the imagination. Join us for a journey through political intrigue, cinematic mysteries, and the fascinating landscape of Australian storytelling.Support the showA Dingo Ate My Movie Socials:WebsiteBlueskyFacebookInstagramLetterboxdEmailMusic from the movies featured on the podcast: SpotifyApple MusicSupport Me At BuyMeACoffee Please note that this podcast often explores topics and uses language from past eras. Today we're jetting off to Australia to uncover some wild and wonderful cult classics from Down Under. I hoped you packed some snacks, because you are in for a wild ride through Ozploitation cinema!First up on our list is Patrick (1978). This chilling thriller dives into the bizarre story of Patrick, a comatose hospital patient who possesses telekinetic powers. Directed by Richard Franklin, this eerie tale will keep you on the edge of your seat, proving that sometimes the mind can be the most dangerous weapon of all.Next, we switch gears with Dead End Drive-In (1986). Picture this: a post-apocalyptic future where a drive-in becomes a concentration camp for societal outcasts. It's a vibrant, neon-lit commentary on culture and youth in revolt, with plenty of action and anarchy to keep the adrenaline pumping. We can't talk about Australian cinema without mentioning The Man From Hong Kong (1975). This film is a high-octane blend of martial arts and police drama, featuring Jimmy Wang Yu as a tough-as-nails inspector on the trail of drug smugglers. With breathtaking stunts and a killer soundtrack, it's a must-watch for fans of action-packed cinema. Finally, we wrap up with Turkey Shoot (1982), also known as "Escape 2000." This dystopian nightmare offers a terrifying look at a totalitarian future where social deviants are hunted for sport. It's brutal, it's bloody, and it's a thrilling exploration of resistance and resilience. That's all for today's trip through the thrilling world of Australian cult cinema. David “Gribs” Gribble grew up in Brisbane, AU and began studying photography at night school. He became a photo assistant, moved to Sydney, and found a job at a local film studio making commercials and low-budget movies. At the time, in the 1970's and '80's, Australia was experiencing a resurgence of its cinema, known as the Australian New Wave. The government provided tax incentives for ordinary people to invest in movies, and established the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. The country's film industry was jump started, and the genre known as Ozploitation was born. Gribs learned camera operating on the job. His first feature film was The Man From Hong Kong, followed by the Aussie cult classic race movie, Running On Empty. The film Monkey Grip won some awards, and Gribs was asked to shoot his first American movie, Off Limits, starring Willem Dafoe and Gregory Hines. He thinks that working with American actors was different than working with Australian actors- the Americans seemed to be more prone to distraction and sensitive about their appearance. Gribs learned to “light faces, not places” since that's where the dialog comes from, and flattering actors by telling them how great they look in a particular spot, to give them tools to make themselves look better on screen. He also learned that in lighting, it's better to work with a broad brush and shoot before you're ready- as a cinematographer, don't indulge yourself too much. The movie Cadillac Man was challenging to shoot for a few reasons. The movie takes place almost entirely in one location- at the car dealership. Gribs had to combat flat lighting up against the walls of the office, as well as dealing with reflections from shiny cars and large windows. Director Roger Donaldson shot take after take, because actor Robin Williams was constantly improvising off script. Gribs found him extremely funny, and says there was so much extra footage of Williams that was cut out, it could probably make another movie. Gribs also discusses working with Anthony Hopkins on The World's Fastest Indian, Jean-Claude Van Damme on The Quest and shooting the Jesse Stone movies starring Tom Selleck. The world of the Wasteland is the longest-running Australian film franchise we can think of, and for good reason. Though some of the films have waited literally decades for the right circumstances for them to be made, the original film and its sequel have had a marked and well-studied effect on Hollywood and the Australian cinema experience since its initial release. What kind of effects could Mad Max have had? Aside from releasing Mel Gibson into the world, that is? Join Holly and Matthew as they look into the film, its production, and the reasons behind it conception - and subsequent durability. When many people think of Australia in the 1960s, they picture an era of protests, sexual exploration and counter-revolutions staged namely by what we now call "The Baby Boomer Generation", who began Australia's first timid steps towards cultural maturity. These Australians began exercising their influence against restrictive legislation, outdated morality and social issues within Australian society, which is exactly the opposite of what their generation stands for now. Cinema around the world was transitioning from big studio led productions to an "Auteur director"-led model. Young experimental film makers with a little cash and a lot of spirit began to make the movie industry their own. Their creativity was influenced by anti-government sentiment after the disastrous results of the Vietnam War, the second wave feminist movement, and the push for the acceptance of the homosexual community. Young Australian film makers were watching, taking notes and preparing for their first steps into the industry. Join Holly and Matthew as they talk Australian New Wave Cinema/Ozploitation, the genre, the heavy hitters, and where the industry would go from here...

As the world exited the Swinging 60s, Australia was looking to their own people for inspiration in the world of the cinema landscape. There were lots of American films to go see, European films were all the rage, but there was something missing from the world of Australian cinemas - the Australian. The Naked Bunyip was the first truly Australian film released to this country, as recent as 1970. It wasn't an easy ride for the director and his team, however, and to celebrate their achievement, we're going to have a long look into what made The Naked Bunyip so popular, so controversial, and so morally grey. Warning: This program contains Nude Sex Scenes; Lewd Humour; and a naked dancing bunyip. Viewer discretion is advised.

Y'all ever see that movie where Australian bikers face off against an Italian Nitemare Feddy aboard a lavish train in 1930s America? Oh, maybe that was actually three different movies. Maybe the three our Patreon pals picked for us this week. Up first! We board a cross-country train with John Barrymore and Carole Lombard in the knee-slapping screwball yarn Twentieth Century (from 1934), directed by Howard Hawks and picked by Listener Luke! Next up! We head on over to Australia with a buncha sleazy bikers and a skeezy copper in 1974's Stone, a bonafide Ozploitation classic from a dude who sadly never directed anything else & picked by the legendary Expat Elise! Finally! Of course, it's 1990's Night Killer, a movie that is neither a Texas Chainsaw nor a Nightmare on Elm St, no matter what Claudio Fragasso and Eric from Nashville tell ya! All this plus sweaty men stewing in their juices and smelling burnt turds, the home decor repor(t), the fireworks reporks, Parker's an Otaku Son of a Bitch, yes Sean does say the word 'jazz' at least once, Sweetman's Wrestlechats, bogus Clue boardgames make Kevin wanna puke, a dangerous political sidebar, the Carole Lombard Repord, there's no wrong way to enjoy Troll 2, nerd news and even more! Recorded live-to-tape on Buttered Corn Day, 2022!! Direct Donloyd HereGot a movie suggestion for the show, or better yet an opinion on next week's movies? Drop us a line at JFDPodcast@gmail.com.
