Praised for his warm, lyrical tone, trumpeter Malcolm Aiken weaves together influences of jazz, world and pop music. His bold new album “New Futures” showcases sounds forged during his four year residency at Guilt & Company, Vancouver’s celebrated live music mecca. The sound is dub-soaked jazz with a splash of soul, down-tempo grooves, and vintage synths that set the mood for his velvet trumpet tone and sinewy improvisations. With his band a synergy emanates that recalls the sounds of Bob James and electric-era Miles Davis, with modern beats inspired by J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Robert Glasper. It’s been called “a west coast take on Nordic nu-jazz. Long, languid horn lines drift over hip beats and chill atmospheres in a collection of sparkling instrumentals. Based on the west coast, Malcolm is an international touring and recording artist who has performed with an impressive array of musical icons including Latin jazz legend Chucho Valdez, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, R&B Hall of Fame singer Dutch Robinson, Polaris-prize winning band Patrick Watson and salsa superstar Jimmy Bosch. He’s played for global audiences at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and for world figures including the Dalai Lama, Reverend Desmond Tutu and Shirin Ebadi. As both a player and producer, Malcolm maintains a diverse and dynamic schedule performing in clubs, festivals and concert halls across Canada and abroad, while working with artists and collaborators in the US, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Mexico City, and Cuba. As an educator, Malcolm is an in-demand music adjudicator and clinician. From 2005-15, he served as director of brass with the award-winning West Vancouver Youth Band. He is currently acting Artist in Residence at the Vancouver School Board and sits on faculty at the Sun Peaks and Whistler Music Festivals. He holds a Master’s degree in ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia, and has published articles exploring topics on brass pedagogy and Latin jazz. He is a frequent panelist for the Juno Awards, FACTOR and the Canada Council for the Arts. The Burying Ground is an upbeat blues string band that brings the fire of punk to the technical prowess and distinct sound of such early blues, country and jazz masters as Blind Blake, Bessie Smith, Gary Davis, Memphis Minnie, Big Bill Broonzy, and Jimmie Rodgers. The core duo of Devora Laye (washboard, vocal and saw) and Woody Forster (guitar and vocals) are known for songwriting that illuminates the human experience, and reflects the modern day by touching on mental health, the trauma of war, social justice and good old-fashioned lost and found love. It is today’s commentary on a framework of vintage music. All three albums have hit the radio charts - Big City Blues (2015); Country Blues & Rags (2017); and The Burying Ground (2017). Born and raised in the Philippines, Audrey Rose moved to British Columbia with her family at the age of 13. Growing up in the influences of 80's music icons like Guns N Roses, Scorpions and The Cure, she embraced a peculiar genre; a twist and blend of rock, jazz, soul and blues. Audrey Rose continued to live her passion, performing as a solo artist but eventually set this aside to pursue audio engineering in the live realm. After working with, and constantly getting inspired by many talented musicians behind the board, her passion to perform rekindled and is ready to take on the stage once again with both old and new music. Born in Minnesota, Tim Fuller has resided in California,Seattle, Vancouver, the Turks and Caicos Islands and New York City. He started singing in church choirs as a child, and went on to study classical piano during his teenage years. Following a post-secondary degree in vocal jazz at Vancouver Community College in British Columbia, success as a musician came almost immediately. Fuller had a record deal with his funk/R&B outfit Vote of Confidence, but Since then, Tim has fronted several successful bands, performing funk, soul and R&B, though he’s best known across the West Coast for steaming up the stage as lead vocalist for the live funk band ‘Soulstream’, which held a longstanding residency at Vancouver hot spot Bar None. Tim is relatively new to us here at Guilt & Company, but we have him back as regularly as possible. His experience and ability as a vocalist along with his beautiful personality and stage presence make him a very important part of what we are working to build. In this episode of the podcast, Fuller is joined by long time friend and bandmate Darren Parris on bass, as well as Mary Ancheta on keys, Justin James on drums, and Anthony Anderson on guitar for some classic 90s and 2000s R&B throw backs. This episode of the Guilt & Company podcasts features two of our favourite Vancouver based instrumentalists, Jonny Tobin and Nate Drobner. Jonny Tobin has, in record time, become one of the top call keys players in Vancouver since graduating from Capilano college merely a few years ago. He plays with absolutely everyone in town and abroad and it’s clear to see why. Nate Drobner, who is an outstanding bass player and multi instrumentalists, has been behind some of the most impressive R&B, hip hop, and jazz fusion to come out of Vancouver in the last 5 to 7 years. He also produces beats under the name Astrological and has an absolutely incredible catalog of music to his name. Jonny and Nate grabbed guitarist Tristan Paxton and drummer Sean Mitchell to form the quartet that performed as the Jonny Tobin/Nate Drobner quartet. Tristan and Sean are definitely two of Vancouver’s most prized instrumentalists as well. Here’s why. Katie Kuffel is a composer and musician based in Seattle, Washington. Her first full-length album, Pearls, was released in October of 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Her first EP, Animal Pragmatist, was released in 2013. Katie’s songwriting is both innovative and thoughtful, with a contemporary sound that draws from blues, jazz, and folk music as well as her training in classical cello and jazz piano. An openly queer artist, she explores concepts of sexuality and femininity throughout her works. Katie has been featured as the musical act in popular podcast Welcome to Nightvale, and in PopMatters as one of the ‘best musical hopes to break out on 2016.' In the words of author Adam Finley: Pearls sounds like alternate-reality Regina Spektor, heavily steeped in the Pacific Northwest with bright piano and a gorgeous voice gliding, rich and effortless, through craftily constructed songs that balance whimsy and self-awareness. Pearls is available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp, and Katie can be found performing at venues throughout Seattle and the greater Pacific Northwest. BaZOOka Picnic brings the FUNK, the whole FUNK, and nuthin’ but the FUNK. Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, BaZOOka has taken Vancouver’s music scene by storm and has packed music venues and dance floors since forming in 2014. Inspired by James Brown, Prince, and Parliament Funkadelic, every BaZOOka show turns the dance floor into a party with their irresistible brand of instrumental funk that combines epic grooves with soul, hip–hop, vocal riffing, jazz harmonies and leaves audiences screaming for more. Fresh off the heels of a 2015 residency at Gastown’s iconic music venue Guilt & Co., every show was not only sold–out, but had a lineup down the block for a chance to dance to the funk. This Edition of Guilt & Co Live was brodcast live on RoundHouse Radio 98.3 fm http://www.roundhouseradio.com http://www.guiltandcompany.com
