Was this character a Narcissist or a Psychopath - or Both? I'm not making the diagnosis here, just examining the story and it's origins.Robert Lewis Stevenson was the creator of the classic, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A classic horror novel that has captured the imagination of many and has been made into a motion picture several times. It seems, along with nightmares and scientific journals, a man named Deacon Brody, was one of the inspirations for the characters Jekyll and Hyde. Brody was a distinguished and trusted gentleman of status who chose, or somehow was compelled by the demons in his own mind, to live a rather duplicitous life. Deacon Brodie was a respected businessman, a city councilor, a cabinetmaker, and a locksmith. Who was always dressed in his finest, and who was always present at the best social events. On the surface he lived a respectable life with a wife and children – but he also lived a secret life filled with gambling, drunkenness, cockfighting, two mistresses, and 5 illegitimate children. Narcissist, psychopath, schizophrenic, or multiple personalities - what do you think? Let me take you on a tour down one of the most famous streets in Edinburgh, the Royal Mile, popping into all the Places that tourists tend not to go, the alleyways or Closes as we call them in Scotland. It gives a fascinating insight into medieval Edinburgh with murder, ghosts, crime and disease emanating from every crevice of the ancient stone walls that remain today. I'll touch upon the reason for Old Edinburgh being so tightly packed together and why it was so easy for disease to spread. Fortunately we still have one of the 16th Century buildings standing on the Royal Mile, Gledstanes land, beautifully restored by the National Trust for Scotland and wedged between two famous closes, James Court and Lady Stair's Close. We will hear from Will Evans, one of the managers at the property. You will hear about the more famous characters of Edinburgh such as Adam Smith, David Hume and Patrick Gedes as well as the infamous characters such as Deacon Brodie. With over 80 Closes to choose from, I will give you a flavour of life in a few of them from both a rich and a poor person's perspective. Old Edinburgh is a place where hundreds of witches were burned to death, only a stone's throw from one of the most prestigious restaurants in the city. We will be heading back, in some cases, to the 16th century, venturing into the darker recesses of Old Edinburgh where, I think, even angels might fear to tread. Come and join me on this journey into Edinburgh city's past and meet some of the characters that lived there in the 16th and 17th centuries.

This Podcast is the first in a 4 Part series on Edinburgh City, the Capital of Scotland. It will look at Edinburgh from its early beginnings right up to today with stories of gentlemen by day and thieves by night. It will highlight some of the most prominent buildings on the Royal Mile and, when talking about St Giles Cathedral, you will hear a desperate story of some of the inhabitants who were buried in the old Graveyard. Who was Deacon Brodie and why was Robert Louis Stevenson so intrigued by this man. Who was Rizzio, secretary to Mary Queen of Scots and who was Clarinda whose romantic, yet mournful song is still so well known today. Would you walk down an alleyway with the possibility of the contents of a chamber pot (toilet) being emptied on your head? It happened in the Old Town - find out why!
Robert Louis Stevenson's gothic novella ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' was published in the USA on 5th January, 1886. It had been intended for release as a Christmas horror story the previous month - but Stevenson's wife Fanny had been so disturbed by the initial draft that she reportedly asked him to burn it. The book's core themes, exploring the duality of human nature and the consequences of unchecked scientific experimentation, contributed to the story having an enduring appeal that has far outlasted its critics. It became Stevenson's first commercial success - despite him having already written ‘Treasure Island'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover how Stevenson resisted psycho-sexual interpretations of the book's metaphors; reveal what the Scottish author did with his new-found riches; and explain how his career came to a premature end thanks to a bowl of mayonnaise… Further Reading: ‘Dr Jekyll and a not so wicked Mr Hyde: how a portrait of evil was toned down' (The Guardian, 2012): https://www.theguardian.com/books/2012/apr/15/jekyll-hyde-stevenson-explicit-manuscript ‘The Real Jekyll & Hyde? The term “Jekyll and Hyde” can be found in the Merriam-Webster dictionary and the plot spoofed in everything from “The Simpsons” to “Saturday Night Live” to “Scooby Doo.” The characters Jekyll and Hyde have achieved a prominent spot in pop culture. But the story of how Robert Louis Stevenson came to write “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is almost as strange as the novel itself. Join us as we discuss how both a nightmare– referred to by Louis as a “fine bogey tale”--and the crime spree of the notorious bandit Deacon Brodie helped inspire this classic monster story. We'll also dig into the controversies over the burning of the first draft and wife Fanny's influence over Louis's writing. You can bet your “Hyde” this episode will draw you into the intriguing story behind the iconic work that now spans stage, screen, literature, video games, and more. #JekyllandHyde #DrJekyll #MrHyde #MonsterMadness #Film #Stage #Literature #History #TrueCrime #RobertLouisStevenson

Amelia is back in the hosting seat this week and brings us a story that may have inspired a very well known character from gothic literature. William 'Deacon' Brodie was a very well-to-do locksmith from Edinburgh who had a sneaky little side business to help fund his double-life. Also this week we hear the story of the enemy that defeated Napoleon more soundly than anyone else. Not Wellington, we are talking about rabbits. We visit Edinburgh's Old Town, or 'Auld Reekie' as the poet Robert Fergusson called it. Thankfully, Daniel Defoe's 18th century warning that when walking the streets at night you risk 'having Chamber Pots of Ordure thrown upon your head' no longer applies. We visit two informative museums - The Real Mary King's Close and Gladstone's Land - and then bring you the story of the city's most infamous resident, Deacon Brodie, pious citizen by day, but at night, 'a gambler and a thief, dissipated and licentious.' It is thought that Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was inspired by the real life Deacon Brodie, a prominent citizen of Edinburgh that happened to be a burglar and inveterate gambler on the DL.
Episode 44: Deacon Brodie. This week Emma takes us back to 18th Century Edinburgh for the story of Deacon William Brodie, thought to be the inspiration behind the Robert Louis Stevenson characters Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Whilst maintaining an image of a high society gentleman, Brodie's arrogance and penchant for the finer things in life led him to utilise his skills and position amongst the elites to pursue a lucrative life of crime.Case research by Emma TaylorProduced by Emma Taylor & Joannagh ShanksEditing by Shaun O'NeillMusic by Tribe of NoiseEpisode Promo by Worse Than Fiction - @WorseTFPodcast on TwitterSources of research:https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usbiography/b/deaconbrodie.htmlhttps://britlitsurvey2.wordpress.com/2018/12/04/the-strange-case-of-robert-louis-stevenson-and-deacon-brodie-exploring-the-inspiration-for-dr-jekyll-and-mr-hyde/https://www.auldreekietours.com/deacon-brodie-the-real-life-inspiration-for-dr-jekyll-and-mr-hyde/https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/the-real-dr-jekyll-deacon-brodiehttp://robert-louis-stevenson.org/works/three-plays-1892/https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/day-1788-deacon-brodie-original-17008649https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/an-account-of-the-trial-of-william-brodie-and-george-smithhttps://www.edinburghexpert.com/blog/edinburghs-infamous-deacon-brodie-the-original-split-personalityhttp://www.royal-mile.com/famous-scots/deacon-brodie.htmlhttp://www.rampantscotland.com/famous/blfamdeacon.htmhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-31018496https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Brodiehttps://archive.org/details/deaconbrodiefath0000gibs/page/26/mode/2upDeacon Brodie : father to Jekyll and Hydeby Gibson, John S

This coming week, the Portobello Drama Group celebrates its 50th anniversary. It started off in a small way as the Drama Group for St Philip’s (now Portobello and Joppa Parish Church). But it quickly grew in numbers and ambition, moving from one-act plays to musicals. For this anniversary year, the company has revived one of its own creations: Brodie – the Musical. It’s the story of that upright citizen cum gambler and thief, Deacon Brodie; the eponymous tavern on the High Street is on the site of one he frequented. We went to meet the Drama Group in rehearsal.

I've been incredibly fortunate with this project. It started off as just an experiment to become familiar with how to podcast. Since then I've managed to tick a bunch of my favourite artists off my interview bucket list. This live episode is another one I can tick off the bucket list. We've all heard our favourite podcasts doing live episodes and to be honest, I wasn't even entirely sure how I was going to do my own version of it. The truth is though, is that it was just like any other episode – a laid back chat with interesting folk.Book Yer Ane Fest was superb. I highly recommend it. Even if you're not au fait with many of the bands playing, it's worth heading down just to soak up the incredibly good-natured vibe all on its own. To be asked to be a part of it, and to do something I've been dreaming about for years, was an incredible honour.Big thanks to Derrick, Kenny and Jonny for allowing me the chance to do this silly little podcast in a live setting, and for taking some time out of the business of running the festival to sit and chat for half an hour or so. It means the world to me.This was recorded live in Deacon Brodie's at 12pm on December the 3rd 2017 (the day before my 32nd birthday, no less) and I think it turned out really quite well.I hope you enjoy the episode.
