If the Gator Bowl is to be Tennessee football's postseason path, then let the opponent be North Carolina. The Vols (8-4) will learn their bowl destination on Sunday. Most of the prominent projections have identified Tennessee as being earmarked for the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, against either UNC (8-4) or North Carolina State (9-3). Tennessee last played in the Gator Bowl to culminate the 2019 season, rallying to beat Indiana to culminate Jeremy Pruitt's second year on the job. On today's episode, Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams examine the Vols' postseason path and why UNC would be a more desirable opponent for Tennessee. Believe it or not, it is still hurricane season in the Atlantic region even though by this time of the year things are really winding down. That of course is a pattern for the meteorological hurricane season, but it also applies to the Miami Hurricanes of late. Look out in August and September, you never know what to expect in October and things go back to largely quiet in November. This year, the slide comes from the injuries and loss of confidence from QB Tyler Van Dyke. Most hurricanes are drawn to the poles (or polls in this football analogy), but the Canes largely offensive struggles have left them in a steering current destined for something like Gator Bowl. Now, don't get me wrong. They're certainly an overall better football team than the one that Florida State devoured in Miami Gardens last season. And they will be hungry looking for a win that they can plant their double red flags on this season. But if FSU's offensive weapons are healthy, these Canes will be just a standard fish storm — in pictures, they look great in pictures but really they're nothing more than flash that won't threaten much of anything. No. 3 Michigan Wolverines (-5.5) at No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions (Noon ET, FOX) No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide (-11.5) at Kentucky Wildcats (Noon ET, ESPN) Miami Hurricanes (+14.5) at No. 4 Florida State Seminoles (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) No. 13 Tennessee Volunteers (-1.5) at No. 14 Missouri Tigers (3:30 p.m. ET, CBS) No. 18 Utah Utes (+9.5) at No. 5 Washington Huskies (3:30 p.m. ET, FOX) No. 15 Oklahoma State Cowboys (-2.5) at UCF Knights (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) No. 9 Ole Miss Rebels (+10.5) at No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs (7:00 p.m. ET, ESPN) No. 7 Texas Longhorns (-11.5) at TCU Horned Frogs (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC) Duke Blue Devils (+14.5) at No. 24 North Carolina Tar Heels (8:00 p.m. ET, ACCN) USC Trojans (+15.5) at No. 6 Oregon Ducks (10:15 p.m. ET, FOX) Learn more about your ad choices. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Baltimore Orioles 7, Detroit Tigers 4 Tampa Bay Rays 14, Chicago White Sox 5 Chicago Cubs 5, San Diego Padres 2 Orioles 7, Tigers 4 – Santander’s 2-run homer icing on Orioles’ rally over Tigers Anthony Santander’s two-run homer capped a five-run seventh inning in which the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a 7-4 win over the Detroit Tigers. Joey Ortiz became the first Orioles player to drive in three runs in his MLB debut since Don Baylor on Sept. 18, 1970. Baltimore improved to 9-1 in its last 10 games. Detroit left 15 runners on base. The Tigers’ Chasen Shreve took the loss. Bryan Baker got the win with 1 1/2 scoreless innings of relief. Felix Bautista pitched the ninth for his sixth save. Rays 14, White Sox 5 – Paredes drives in 5 as Rays pound Cease, White Sox 14-5 Isaac Paredes had a career-high five RBIs, and the Tampa Bay Rays handed the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 14-5 victory. Brandon Lowe homered and drove in three runs for Tampa Bay in the opener of a four-game series. Lowe, Yandy Díaz, Luke Raley and Josh Lowe each had three hits as the AL East leaders bounced back nicely after they were shut out in back-to-back home games by Houston. Tampa Bay finished with 16 hits. White Sox ace Dylan Cease was tagged for seven runs, six earned, and nine hits in four-plus innings. Cubs 5, Padres 2 – Hosmer, Velázquez, Swanson hit HRs, Cubs beat Padres 5-2 Eric Hosmer and Nelson Velázquez hit back-to-back homers and Dansby Swanson added his first of the season to help the Chicago Cubs top the San Diego Padres 5-2. Manny Machado homered for the Padres, who had won five of seven. Hayden Wesneski got the win. Hosmer and Velázquez gave the Cubs the lead for good with consecutive homers off Seth Lugo in the bottom of the second. San Diego’s Matt Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to create a save situation for Brad Boxberger, who worked the ninth for his second in as many chances. Hendriks announced his diagnosis in January and completed his final round of chemotherapy three weeks ago. The 34-year-old right-hander announced last week on Instagram that he was cancer-free. White Sox general manager Rick Hahn says Hendriks will return to Chicago during the team’s upcoming series against Minnesota for “a pre-rehab assignment check-in,” and then his assignment could start “potentially immediately after that series.” NHL – National Hockey League – 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs – Round 1 (Best of 7) Last Night Tampa Bay Lightning 4, Toronto Maple Leafs 2 (TOR leads 3-2) New Jersey Devils 4, New York Rangers 0 (NJD leads 3-2) Vegas Golden Knights 4, Winnipeg Jets 1 (VGK wins 4-1) Tonight Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders, 7:00 p.m. (CAR leads 3-2) Boston Bruins at Florida Panthers, 7:30 p.m. (BOS leads 3-2) Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild, 9:30 p.m. (DAL leads 3-2) Colorado Avalanche at Seattle Kraken, 10:00 p.m. (SEA leads 3-2) NBA – National Basketball Association Playoffs – Round 1 (Best of 7) Last Night Boston Celtics 128, Atlanta Hawks 120 (BOS wins 4-2) Tonight Sacramento Kings at Golden State Warriors, 8:00 p.m. (GSW leads 3-2) Memphis Grizzlies at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:30 p.m. (LAL leads 3-2) NFL – NFL draft dominated early by QBs Quarterbacks dominated the first part of the NFL draft. Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson were among the top four picks Thursday night, an expected result in a league where teams know finding a franchise QB is the quickest path to success. The Carolina Panthers selected Young, the slender and dynamic Alabama quarterback, with the No. 1 pick, seven weeks after making a blockbuster trade with Chicago to move up to get their choice of potential franchise players. The Panthers chose the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner over Ohio State’s Stroud, Florida’s Richardson and Kentucky’s Will Levis. New coach Frank Reich said earlier in the week that the organization reached a consensus Monday after several weeks of deliberation. NFL – Lions take RB Gibbs No. 12, LB Campbell at No. 18 The Detroit Lions traded down to select Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 pick overall in the NFL draft on Thursday night, making a relatively surprising selection. The Lions gave up their first pick and a third-rounder to Arizona for a first-round selection and the 34th spot overall. They drafted Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell at No. 18 overall. Detroit is hoping to make the most of an opportunity to improve its on-the-rise franchise in the draft after addressing needs on both sides of the ball in free agency. NFL – Chicago Bears draft Tennessee OT Darnell Wright at No. 10 The Chicago Bears selected Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright with the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL draft. The move should give quarterback Justin Fields more protection. The Bears traded back one spot with the Philadelphia Eagles and got a fourth-round pick in 2024. The 6-foot-5, 330-pound Wright was first-team, All-SEC as a right tackle last season. He played left tackle in 2021. The Bears finished with the worst record in the league last year at 3-14. NFL – Colts select QB Anthony Richardson at No. 4 in NFL draft The Indianapolis Colts followed their draft plan by selecting quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth pick of the NFL draft. The highly anticipated move had been expected even before the Colts finished last season with seven straight losses and a 4-12-1 mark, the bigger debate was over who to draft. But when the Carolina Panthers took Bryce Young with the top overall pick and C.J. Stroud went No. 2 to Houston, general manager Chris Ballard stood pat at No. 4 and selected Richardson instead of former Kentucky star Will Levis. NFL – Cowboys get Michigan DT Mazi Smith 26th overall in NFL draft The Dallas Cowboys have drafted Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith with the 26th pick in the first round of the NFL draft. Dallas picked Smith after Buffalo moved a spot ahead of the Cowboys and drafted Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid. Tight end was a popular position with pundits after Dalton Schultz left in free agency a year after playing on the franchise tag. The Cowboys could use more offensive firepower around quarterback Dak Prescott. But the run defense was the weakest part of an an otherwise solid unit in a second consecutive playoff season for Dallas in 2022. WNBA – Brittney Griner gets emotional discussing Russian detainment Brittney Griner got emotional quickly while speaking to reporters for the first time since her nearly 10-month detainment in Russia on drug-related charges. The WNBA star had to take a moment to compose herself after being asked about her resiliency through the ordeal. Griner’s first news conference drew more than 100 people, including Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, members of the Phoenix Mercury organization and Griner’s wife, Cherelle. Griner was arrested in February 2022 at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years but was released in a prisoner swap in December. NCAAFB – Notre Dame transfer QB Buchner commits to Alabama and Rees Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner has committed to Alabama, where he will be reunited with former Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Buchner announced his decision in a Twitter post. Entering his third college season, Buchner began last year as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback. He hurt shoulder in Week 2 and missed the rest of the regular season. He returned to lead the Fighting Irish to a Gator Bowl victory against South Carolina. Alabama completed spring practice last weekend with no clear front-runner in a quarterback competition that include third-year player Jalen Milroe, redshirt freshman Ty Simpson and two freshmen. NCAAFB – Harbaugh leaves spring with ‘best version’ of Wolverines yet Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says he came out of spring practice with the best team he’s had since taking over in 2015. The two-time defending Big Ten champion Wolverines bring back 84% of their offensive production. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards will work behind the nation’s best offensive line. The defense is loaded, especially in the front seven, and linebackers Ernest Hausmann (Nebraska) and Josaiah Stewart (Coastal Carolina) are transfers who showed this spring they’re capable of making big impacts. There’s much less clarity elsewhere in the conference. Ohio State still hasn’t determined the successor to C.J. Stroud. Purdue’s Ryan Walters is finding his way in his first head coaching job. Wisconsin’s move to coordinator Phil Longo’s Air Raid offense under Luke Fickell had a bumpy start. Matt Rhule’s building project at Nebraska is just beginning. As many as six quarterback competitions will go into the fall. NCAAVB – Nebraska sells 83,000 tickets for outdoor volleyball event Almost 83,000 tickets have been sold for Nebraska’s outdoor college volleyball doubleheader at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Aug. 30. The event starts with a Division II exhibition between Wayne State and Nebraska-Kearney and will be followed by a regular-season match between the Cornhuskers and Omaha. Athletic director Trev Alberts said the goal has gone from setting the NCAA volleyball attendance record to breaking the U.S. women’s one-day record for any sport. The record is 90,185 for the 1999 Women’s World Cup final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 4, Milwaukee Brewers 3 Toronto Blue Jays 7, Chicago White Sox 0 Chicago Cubs 6, San Diego Padres 0 Tigers 4, Brewers 3 – Carpenter homers, Tigers hold Brewers in check with 4-3 win Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run home run and four Detroit Tigers pitchers held the Milwaukee Brewers in check, as Detroit beat Milwaukee 4-3. Detroit scored all its runs in the second inning. Three batters fouled off a total of nine pitches from left-handed starter Eric Lauer (3-2) before the homer by Carpenter, who had been 0-for-12. Detroit added the decisive run with two outs. Eric Haase kept the inning alive with a ground ball single that third baseman Owen Miller put a glove on but couldn’t scoop. That allowed Spencer Torkelson to bat. He singled in Javier Báez, who had doubled. Milwaukee started the 8th with a leadoff double, but then Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez and William Contreras struck out. Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull gave up two runs in four innings. Blue Jays 7, White Sox 0 – Jansen homers twice, Jays hand White Sox 6th straight loss José Berríos struck out a season-high nine over seven innings, Danny Jansen homered twice and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the White Sox 7-0, extending Chicago’s losing streak to six. Berríos allowed four hits — all singles — and walked one in his second straight seven-inning outing. Nate Pearson and Anthony Bass finished with hitless relief as the Blue Jays won for the 14th time in 20 games. Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run triple and George Springer had three hits for Toronto. Cubs 6, Padres 0 – Justin Steele, Yan Gomes help Cubs blank Padres 6-0 Justin Steele pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning in his fourth straight win, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 6-0. Yan Gomes had four of Chicago’s seven hits, including a two-run drive off Blake Snell in the second. Gomes is batting .441 with four homers and nine RBIs in his last eight games. Taking the mound on a chilly night at Wrigley Field, Steele struck out five and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. San Diego, which had won four of five, finished with five hits. It went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Bellinger and his girlfriend welcomed their second child on Sunday, a baby girl. The 27-year-old Bellinger is off to a strong start in his first year with Chicago, batting .300 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 21 games. The 2019 NL MVP finalized a $17.5 million, one-year contract with the Cubs in December. The Cubs also recalled outfielder Nelson Velázquez from Triple-A Iowa. The Hawks rallied to beat the Boston Celtics 119-117 in Game 5 of their playoff matchup on Tuesday night, sending the series back to Atlanta for Game 6. It means that State Farm Arena is double-booked for Thursday night. Live Nation says the casualty will be Jackson’s concert, which will be postponed until Friday. Cunningham says there’s “no denying” his talent. The Bears have the No. 9 overall pick and no shortage of weaknesses to address after finishing with a league-worst 3-14 record in their first season under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. They could use another blocker to protect quarterback Justin Fields. They also need an edge rusher after registering a league-low 20 sacks as well as a disruptive force inside. NFL – Young? Stroud? Panthers reach consensus on No. 1 draft pick Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager Scott Fitterer have reached an agreement on which quarterback the team will take with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Reich says the team won’t say who that is until Thursday night, when the draft begins. The Panthers are choosing between Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position that has been in transition for the last five seasons. Fitterer said last week he had waited to ask Reich who he preferred at No. 1 so that nothing would cloud either decision maker’s judgement. NFL – Jets GM: Getting Rodgers is ‘historic’ trade for franchise The Jets’ deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers is a franchise-altering move that brings the four-time NFL MVP to a team that has the league’s longest postseason drought at 12 years. General manager Joe Douglas called it an “honor” to have a player of Rodgers’ caliber to want to play for the franchise and credited the culture coach Robert Saleh has cultivated during his two-plus seasons with the team. Douglas said there are still details that need to be finalized before the deal is completed. But Douglas said it is a "historic trade for this franchise.” NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner says he will explore transfer options Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner says he will enter his name in the transfer portal, but did not rule out remaining with the Fighting Irish. Buchner posted on Twitter that he loves Notre Dame, but decided to explore other options after competing with Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman for the starting job. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman did not name a starter after spring practice. Hartman arrived earlier this year with three seasons of starting experience and 110 career touchdown passes. Buchner began last year as Notre Dame’s starter, but injured his shoulder in Week 2. He returned to lead the Irish to a Gator Bowl victory against South Carolina. US Soccer – British executive Crocker hired as USSF sporting director British soccer executive Matt Crocker has been hired as sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation. He will lead the search for the American men’s national team coach. That position has been uncertain since Gregg Berhalter was pushed aside during an investigation that developed from a feud with the Reyna family. Crocker will start Aug. 2, but begin the search for a coach immediately. The 48-year-old most recently was the director of football operations for Southampton. Joshua, Jude, and Brendan welcome in the new year for Notre Dame Football with tidings of comfort and joy. In this episode: HELLO! Recasting Dan Brown's world with Indiana Jones because Joshua saw an old cowboy. Scientology and the Amish... basically the same thing. REVIEWS! Notre Dame's Gator Bowl win over the South Carolina Gamecocks. Tyler Buchner's big 7 touchdown day. Notre Dame's dominant 2nd half defense. Jayden Thomas is definitely a number one - even if it's a number one number two. DISCLAIMER: At no point in the podcast did any of the unholy trio mention Mitchell Evan's name, but it was probably Brendan's Michigan blood that was at fault. Heaps of love for Braden Lenzy. Audric Estime should get the ball more, but we love what Logan Diggs does too - this is fun! The choke job we witnessed when the USC Trojans lost to the Tulane Green Wave. Speaking of choke jobs... the Michigan Wolverines had their layup against the TCU Horned Frogs swatted away and we're here to dunk all over it. The status quo is good for us. Sam Hartman is now Big Baby Daddy Sam Hartman, and we talk a lot about him and the quarterback situation. Christmas Trash. And plenty more weaved in and out of the show. Please RATE and REVIEW! All reviews left on Apple Podcasts will be read on the next OFD Podcast. Go Irish! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
