It’s something that we all do on occasion — working longer hours than we should or thinking about work on the weekend. When our work-life filters into our personal lives, we often lose sight of what we want from our careers, and our ideas of success no longer look like our own. It’s at these points that we need to make a change. In today’s episode, Cassandra talks with Diana Morris, a clarity coach who helps millennials recognize what they want from life and then prepare them to work towards their potential. Diana shares her story about how she was over-invested in her job and about what it meant when she lost this job due to restructuring. She delves into how this was an opportunity to pause, reflect, and redefine her purpose on her own terms because, in pursuit of success, your mission can often be defined for you. In telling her story, Diana explores her role as a clarity coach — a business that she runs while also working as a university administrator. This episode is valuable both for those reevaluating their career goals and for those looking to transition from being a professional to a fully-fledged entrepreneur — a transition that Diana is currently undergoing herself.Key Points From This Episode:Diana talks about the link between her professional and entrepreneurial life. After getting laid-off, Diana realized that your purpose can be defined for you.Diana’s lesson that caring shouldn’t come at the cost of personal neglect.Diana’s mission is to help people define their aspirations and to then root them in reality. Why over-investment in your job prevents you from following your personal mission. Learning to recognize your natural affinities as unique and marketable strengths. Diana’s advice to people in a state of transition; stop and define what success means to you. How figuring out your mission will give you guidance. Diana’s final message — the world needs what you can offer, just ask for help along the way. Tweetables:“If you don’t define your own mission, then it gets defined for you.” — Diana Morris [0:10:31]“I was so invested and dedicated in their mission, that I forgot my own.” — Diana Morris [0:14:52]“Entrepreneurs or creative people are so used to their strengths that they don't recognize them as strengths.” — Diana Morris [0:23:35]“Take a moment to pause and find your own voice — and define your own version of what success looks like.” — Diana Morris [0:28:41]“It’s very easy to say ‘one day I’ll do this’. But it’s presumptuous to think that you’ll get there. Rather use the time that you are guaranteed.” — Diana Morris [0:30:04]“Figure out what it is that you actually want and let that be the guide that you need.” — Diana Morris [0:30:36]Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: Diana Morris Diana Morris on Instagram Diana Morris on TwitterDiana Morris on LinkedinDiana’s book — Lachesis' Allotment

What is an open society? Diana Morris works to answer that question in her role as director of Open Society Institute-Baltimore, a philanthropic organization dedicated to promoting opportunity and justice by resolving issues faced in urban areas. Open Society Institute-Baltimore is the only U.S. field office of the Open Society Foundations, founded by billionaire philanthropist George Soros. Here in Baltimore, Diana and the office focus on issues like lowering suspension rates for kids in school, providing accessible drug treatment and reducing the number of Marylanders in the criminal justice system. Social justice and human rights work have always been important to Diana, who grew up in a small town with an itch to get out and see the world. Diana spoke about some of her travels, and the early issues that got her involved in this kind of work. She also discussed the learning curve she experienced when she got to Baltimore, the challenge of convincing people of the importance of urban issues, and the future of the city.
