Protests against police brutality in Baltimore, Maryland

Send us a textApril 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the #BaltimoreUprising, a series of protests sparked by Freddie Gray's death in Baltimore Police custody in 2015.Baltimore has long reflected America's racial and political anxieties, making the Uprising a frequent subject of academic analysis. In this episode, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle's Lawrence Grandpre and Dayvon Love critique two books: Beyond Black Lives Matter by Cedric Johnson and Invisible Weapons by Marcus Board Jr.While Johnson critiques BLM and Board affirms it, both argue that Baltimore's working-class grassroots were misled by neoliberalism, rendering their responses to Freddie Gray ineffective. This view overlooks successful grassroots political interventions by groups like LBS, which led protests during the Uprising and continues to advance community-driven agendas. By oversimplifying Black identity as manipulation by elites—whether through neoliberalism (Johnson) or patriarchy (Board)—both books fail to capture the political and ideological complexity of Baltimore's working-class Black communities. They also neglect to examine how academic detachment can distort analyses of Baltimore, Black life, and Black politics.Support the showIn Search of Black Power is a Black-owned internet show and podcast. In this gripping episode, Rabia and Ellyn are joined by the incredible Nathan Lee Graham to explore the tragic death of Freddie Gray Jr. On April 12, 2015, Freddie was arrested in West Baltimore. While in police custody he suffered severe spinal injuries which resulted in his death a week later. What really happened? Why was he arrested? Rabia, Ellyn, and Nathan delve into the details—from manipulated camera footage to false narratives—and uncover the cast of characters complicit in covering up the truth. Freddie's death sparked a movement, igniting massive protests, prompting military occupation in Baltimore, and sparking a nationwide cry for justice. They discuss how those responsible evaded accountability and reflect on the lasting impact of Freddie Gray Jr.'s untimely passing. CashApp: $Ralikhhayes Organizing Black https://t.co/MMW7qgqmla As a young person raised in the heart of Baltimore City, Ralikh Hayes started his journey of combating social injustice by becoming a young organizer in 2007 with the Baltimore Algebra Project as an organizer/math tutor ending his time with BAP in 2015 after serving as Co-Director and Board President. In 2015 Organizing Black was co-founded by Michaela Brown, Ralikh Hayes, and Tre Murphy these three visionaries who believe that the path to black liberation and a just, fair, equitable democracy can only exist if we begin the hard work of redefining the systems that give way to oppression and racism. As the nation sat perplexed as we heard of the death of Freddie Gray. Hayes and OB co-founders Brown & Murphy were already in action leading the Baltimore Uprising. Ralikh has a depth of experience ranging from local, state, national, and international grassroot campaigns. And has participated and been a leader in the school-to-prison-pipeline movement, the Alliance for Educational Justice, Baltimore United for Change, the Movement for Black Lives, and even more. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-full-set-podcast/support

Five years after the protests and rioting that detonated when Freddie Gray died in police custody, we trace the impact of the Baltimore Uprising on young activists and organizers. Young people were at the center of the Uprising, demanding that those in power address injustice, police misconduct and more. Michaela Duchess Brown, who grew up a few blocks from Gray, had already been organizing for eight years in 2015. She says the Uprising marked a change. Plus, Jamie Grace Alexander, formerly of the Baltimore Transgender Alliance, and Lana Weidgenant, of the climate justice group Zero Hour, tell us what the Uprising meant to them.
In Part Two of In Search of Black Power's Hardcore (Black) History of Baltimore, we tell the story of one of the grandfathers of the neoliberal city, Jim Rouse, depicting what happened when his vision of city planning as "civic engineering" came to West Baltimore. If you're paying even a modicum of attention to what's happening in the United States' presidential election you know that it's been ripe with shenanigans. Usually, in a race for the world's most coveted and arguably most powerful political appointment candidates try, though sometimes through very thin veils, to hide their religious intolerance, sexism, ageism, and penchant towards plutocracy. Not anymore. The 2016 race has brought out an unashamed worst of the worst in behavior, not only from the candidates but from the society as a whole. So much so that even "My Kevin", stalwart black male purveyor of "cultural insensitivity, has finally come to terms with the notion that racism is in fact, a thing. He talks for the first time about why he's no longer holding on to the sentiment of sensitivity and why if a certain candidate tries to bring trouble to his beloved Baltimore, he's ready to rumble! We also went in on the upcoming anniversary of Freddie Gray and the Baltimore Uprising, the mayoral race and the overall progress of the city. There's also that thing that happened called "wingate." And that's all I'm going to share with you for now. If you want to know more you gotta listen for yourself.. Featured wine: One Hope~ Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (California)

This week we discuss notification anxiety, our device setups, the Baltimore Uprising, the communication pyramid, and how passive information affects your present being.
National outrage and protests have swept the country following the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died of a severe and critical neck injury on April 19, exactly seven days after he was apprehended by Baltimore police. We talked about the "Baltimore Uprising" and the underlying issues fueling the protests, which includes poverty, unemployment, police mistrust, systemic racism and oppression, featuring Diana Morris, the Director of Open Society Institute-Baltimore and the Open Places Initiative

Our conversation about #FreddieGray and the #BaltimoreUprising protests from Episode 6 Part 1 somehow transitioned into a conversation Young Thug, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, Future, et al. We ask the question "what completely solo Young Thug record can you remember?". We also get into newer albums from Mobb Deep & Raekwon, Raekwon's discography, and various things related to Wu-Tang (for some reason our conversations always come back to the Wu lol). We end with some podcast business that probably shouldn't be on the podcast, but f it lol, and also we wrap up our Freddie Gray conversation from Episode 6 Part 1. Check it out! On the April 30, 2015 episode of Liberal Dan Radio I will be discussing some of the points made at the Supreme Court hearing on Obergefell V Hodges, what very may well be the final marriage equality case seen by the Supreme Court. And then I will be discussing the Baltimore Uprising movement, the killing of Freddie Gray, and why there is a lot of hypocrisy by many white people, especially Conservative white folks, on many of the issues that are being raised. I won't be doing any special bits this week because these issues are far too serious for jokes If you listen after the live broadcast you can always leave comments on the show thread at LiberalDan.com.

Over more than a week after the death of 25 year old Freddie Gray, Baltimore still has no answers on how and why this young man died in police custody. From the mayors misspoken words, to riots and looting, the attention has shifted from the death of Gray to issues that continue to overlook the truth of what happened. #BaltimoreUprising
