jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/23wftbjz Contact: irishlingos@gmail.com Synge Street Irish Medium School to be established as planned last year. Gaelcholáiste Shráid Synge le bunú mar a beartaíodh anuraidh. It is not good enough that a plan to turn a secondary school in Dublin into an all-Irish school is being progressed without consulting the school's teachers, says the teachers' union. Níl sé maith go leor go bhfuiltear ag dul chun cinn le plean scoil lán-Ghaeilge a dhéanamh de mheánscoil i mBaile Átha Cliath gan dul i gcomhairle le múinteoirí na scoile, a deir ceardchumann na múinteoirí. The Department of Education announced last autumn that the Christian Brothers School on Synge Street in the south of the city was to be converted into a Gaelcholáiste and would open at the start of the 2026 school year. D'fhógair an Roinn Oideachais an fómhar seo caite go rabhthas le Gaelcholáiste a dhéanamh de Scoil na mBráithre Críostaí ar Shráid Synge i ndeisceart na cathrach agus go n- osclófaí é ag tús na scoilbhliana 2026. The teachers indicated at the time, however, that the news came to them from the north and that the issue was never discussed with them. Thug na múinteoirí le fios ag an am, áfach, gur tháinig an scéala aniar aduaidh orthusan agus nár pléadh an cheist riamh leo. Some said they were worried that they would have to significantly improve their Irish, learn Irish from scratch or look for a new job at another school. Dúirt roinnt acu go raibh imní orthu go gcaithfidís feabhas mór a chur ar a gcuid Gaeilge, Gaeilge a fhoghlaim ón mbuntús nó post nua a lorg i scoil eile. The matter was discussed in a meeting held by the school administrators, Éamainn Rís Schools Trust, with the school's board of management last night. Pléadh an scéal i gcruinniú a bhí ag riarthóirí na scoile, Iontaobhas Scoileanna Éamainn Rís, le bord bainistíochta na scoile arú aréir. In a statement issued by the Trust after the meeting, it was confirmed that the plan was to proceed, apart from the occasional minor change, and it was accepted that the teachers had been put at a disadvantage because they had not been consulted beforehand. I ráiteas a d'eisigh an tIontaobhas i ndiaidh an chruinnithe, deimhníodh go rabhthas le dul chun cinn leis an bplean, seachas an corrathrú beag, agus glacadh leis gur cuireadh olc ar na múinteoirí mar nach ndeachthas i gcomhairle leo roimhe seo. It was stated that the school would gradually become a Gaelcholáiste and that it was intended to teach some students through the medium of English at the outset. Dúradh gur de réir a chéile a dhéanfaí Gaelcholáiste den scoil agus go raibh sé i gceist roinnt daltaí a theagasc trí mheán an Bhéarla i gcónaí ag an tús. Speaking on RTÉ this morning, however, Deputy General Secretary of the Secondary Teachers' Association, Diarmaid de Paor, said that teachers are still blind to what the Department of Education and school administrators are planning. Agus é ag labhairt ar RTÉ ar maidin inniu, áfach, dúirt Leas- Ardrúnaí Chumann na Meánmhúinteoirí, Diarmaid de Paor, go bhfuil na múinteoirí dall i gcónaí ar a bhfuil á bheartú ag an Roinn Oideachais agus ag riarthóirí na scoile. Not to mention the teachers, the parents are not being consulted either, said the Power. Gan trácht ar na múinteoirí, níltear ag dul i gcomhairle leis na tuismitheoirí ach an oiread, arsa an Paorach. He believes that the plan should be revisited and implemented properly anew. Dar leis gur cheart dul siar ar an bplean agus a chur sa siúl i gceart as an nua. He also indicated that he doubts that Synge Street is the best location for a new Irish-medium school – as it is being envisioned by the Department of Education anyway, he said. Thug sé le fios freisin go bhfuil amhras air gurb é Sráid Synge an t-ionad is fearr le haghaidh Gaelcholáiste nua – de réir mar atá sé á shamhlú ag an Roinn Oideachais ar aon ch...

What were Jesus's views on sex? Why did so many Christians choose a life of celibacy? Has the church ever been tolerant of homosexuality? These are some of the questions explored by Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch in his new book Lower than the Angels, a sweeping 2,000-year history of sex and Christianity, which he expects will annoy a great many people. This podcast is a bit different. In short, due to various reasons, you just have me. But that's fine as it's a great opportunity to have a quick catch up post General Election and a gaze into the crystal ball to see what the new and very shiny Starmer government has in store for infrastructure as we head towards the Kings Speech and opening of a new Parliamentary session this Wednesday. And without getting unnecessarily nostalgic, it's a great moment to point out - and to mark the fact - that it is 30 years this week since, having sat and passed my professional exams to become a chartered civil engineer, I packed my bags from Sir Owen Williams and Partners and made the bold decision to join New Civil Engineer magazine and start a new career in journalism.A quick shout out to my old colleague and buddy Diarmaid Fleming, who reminded me of this milestone. Diarmaid and I joined NCE on the same day and from similar backgrounds and were famously both late for our first Monday morning news meeting with then editor Mike Winney.Well last week's landslide sweep to power by Labour was, of course, reminiscent of the 1997 win under Tony Blair. That prompted an unprecedently renaissance in infrastructure spending, urged on by the fledgling private finance initiative and underpinned by large dollops of public spending and public debt. They were heady times that saw huge changes in the UK approach to public transport, to energy policy and to investment in schools, hospitals, prisons and in national and local highways. The reality is that today, hardly a new ministerial speech goes by without reference to infrastructure investment as the key to driving economic growth and kickstarting the transformation of UK living standards. As Sir Kier Starmer puts it in the pre-Election manifesto, we are presented with “an opportunity to begin the work of national renewal." OK, so that was the ambition. What about the reality of delivery when the rubber hits the road. It's a tough brief given the perilous state of the public finances so let's take a quick look at six key issues that jump out to me as interesting factors that might shape the next five to ten years of infrastructure and try to get a sense of where we are heading. 1. Giving teeth to the NIC2. Planning reform3. Focus on Local Authorities4. Great British Energy5. Transport strategy6. Creating an infrastructure investment fundResources Labour Party manifesto National Infrastructure CommissionMinistry of Housing, Communities & Local GovernmentLord Hendy appointed Minister of State

Disert is a remote townland in the Bluestack Mountains in Co Donegal. For reasons that are not entirely clear, our ancestors have been drawn here for thousands of years. There is no question it is a special place.Located in the shade of a sacred mountain - Carnaween - it was a site of pagan worship associated with some of the most famous figures in Irish mythology. There are stories relating to Finn MacCumhail (McCool), Diarmaid and Grainne in the surrounding area.It was also used by early Irish Christians and medieval pilgrims. In the 18th century Catholics were drawn to Disert when their religion was suppressed by the penal laws. Even into the 20th century it was used as a cillín to bury unbaptised children. Today the local community continues to pray at the site. The questions remains why? What is special about this site?Over the last few years archaeologists led by Dr Fiona Beglane from Atlantic Technological University, Sligo have been excavating Disert to try and understand its complex story. Her international team of archaeologists from the Institute for Field Research and California State University Los Angeles have made some fascinating discoveries.Last summer I visited Disert to record an episode at the excavation. In this podcast Fiona shares what her team uncovered in this remarkable place...Thanks to Dr Fiona Beglane for her time and archaeologist Rebekka Grace who arranged the recordings.Find out more about Disert at https://disertheritage.com/ Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/irishhistory. In this episode, I sit down with Group Quality & Sustainability Manager of the Endeavour Drinks Group, Diarmaid O'Mordha. Most of you will know that the Endeavour Drinks group is the largest beverage retailer and distributor in Australia with well known bottleshops such as Dan Murphy's and BWS, and the giant pubs & clubs network ALH Group. Diarmaid and his team, to use his own words “are the ones that keep the river clean from being polluted” when it comes to the many different beverage producers wanting to sell their products within their retail distribution channels. In our chat, we talk about the potential opportunities for small local breweries if they have ambitions to get their beers into local BWS bottleshops, the common pitfalls and issues they come across with suppliers just starting out in wholesale distribution and some of the bare minimum quality controls a Distributor such as Endeavour would expect a brewery to adhere to. In today's live episode of The RAG Podcast, I am again joined by my Project 500 partners Chris Redmond and Tim Roedel, alongside Diarmaid Casey the Deputy Headteacher of the school I used to work as a teacher 10 years ago! Diarmaid openly discussed the reality of life for parents, teachers and school children in his area in the south east of Sheffield. He also confirmed that in his school alone - 333 students currently had no access to a laptop! That is one school, in one city across our nation… It is devastating to hear these statistics. We have to do something to help and we have to act now… Project 500 is a scheme that is designed to help provide some of the UK's most disadvantaged families with the laptops they desperately need. We are proud to announce that in week 1 we have raised over £32,000 which is exactly 200 laptops for 200 children - 40% of our £80,000 target! Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us in week 1 - but we can't stop now! Diarmaid Ninian John MacCullouch (31 October 1951) is a British ecclesiastic historian. He is currently Professor of History of the Church at Oxford University and has been a Fellow of St. Cross College since 1995. MacCulloch was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA) in 1978, as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) in 1982, and as a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 2001. Outside of his many outstanding accomplishments he is an award winning author and New York Times Bestseller. MacCullouch earned his BA (1972), MA (1976) and PhD (1977) from Cambridge University. Diarmaid's book: History of Christianity: the first three thousand years (Penguin/Allen Lane) inspired the 2009 BBC TV series of the same name. The book won McGill University's Peter Cundill Prize for history (2010). The world's largest prize for this academia. In 2018, MacCulloch released the biography Thomas Cromwell: A Life. Of his greatest critiques has been how the Church of England regards homosexuality. "I was ordained Deacon (Church of England). But, being a gay man, it was just impossible to proceed further, within the conditions of the Anglican set-up, because I was determined that I would make no bones about who I was; I was brought up to be truthful, and truth has always mattered to me. The Church couldn't cope and so we parted company." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/iantrottier/support

This week we're talking to Karl McDermott of the Leitrim Hurlers, Thomas McDonald, manager of the Sligo / Leitrim League leaders Manorhamilton Rangers as well as looking back at some of the excellent performances by Leitrim Athletes in February with our Monthly Sports Awards. In a weather affected weekend it was mostly good news for local teams on the national stage with the footballers, hurlers and Longford Town all earning wins on the east coast while Sligo Rovers and Sligo Rugby saw their fixtures fall foul of the conditions as well as the entire adult club football fixture list in Leitrim. In another late change Leitrim Hurlers had to travel to the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown for their clash with Lancashire, where a victory would put one foot in the Division 3B National League Final. Breifne talks to Karl McDermott after the hurlers completed their final league with a win over their British counterparts. We're all celebratory here in Leitrim Daily as we're looking at our nominees for the Monthly Sportsperson of the Month Awards which feature 23 young and not so young individuals and teams who surpassed even their own expectations this month and reached super levels of performance at local, national and international level. You can vote for your choice of Sportsperson of the Month by visiting www.leitrimdaily.com/vote to make your choice.

Enjoy this wide ranging conversation with the renowned Irish historian on Brexit, the performance of politicians such as Boris Johnson, the EU and the Irish Government over the past few years, to technology, and the challenges faced with the movement from the written word, Ireland and its performance on climate and womens issues, the GAA and its role in society today, and much more.
The Fall of Anne Boleyn “I think Anne Boleyn’s fatal mistake was to snigger at the King in the presence of handsome young men. And I don’t think she did anything more than that.” - (Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch) Thomas Cromwell, a self-described “ruffian”, was King Henry VIII’s chief minister in the 1530s. He was clever, driven and ruthless, qualities that have captivated novelists and historians for generations as they have attempted to capture his mysterious essence. The year 1536 saw Cromwell at the peak of his career. As chief administrator of the realm he had vast and wide-ranging powers, but he also had enemies. Prominent among these was the King’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. In one of the most infamous episodes in all of English history, the spring of 1536 saw Cromwell and Anne in combat for their lives. The story concluded with Anne Boleyn’s execution at the Tower of London in May. Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch and Thomas Cromwell In this live episode of Travels Through Time, recorded at the Buxton International Festival, we revisit the high-wire act of Henry VIII’s court with Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch of the University of Oxford. Diarmaid is a hugely respected scholar of Tudor England and the Reformation and last year he published his authoritative Thomas Cromwell: A Life. In three tantalising scenes, Diarmaid guides us through 1536 from Thomas Cromwell’s point of view. He shows us a plot, a rebellion and a triumph: scenes that take us to the very heart of one of the pivotal times in English history. Scene One: 24 May 1536: Ambassador Eustache Chapuys and Thomas Cromwell debriefing after the execution of Anne Boleyn. The inside story of Tudor politics and Cromwell's quiet alliance with the Lady Mary against Queen Anne. Scene Two: The moment (no direct information, so supposition necessary) around 3 October 1536 when King Henry VIII was told of the Lincolnshire Rising, after the government had been looking in the wrong place for trouble. Scene Three: 22 December 1536: Thomas Cromwell sits in his house at the Rolls listening to the sounds of the magnificent procession of the King from Whitehall to Greenwich down Fleet Street. He and the King have apparently yielded to all the demands of the Pilgrims of the North and their leader Robert Aske is due to spend Christmas with the King. In fact, after the remarkable turnaround in November, the King is backing Cromwell and will betray the rebels. Memento: The keyboard that Mark Smeaton played for Anne Boleyn Thomas Cromwell: A Life by Thomas Cromwell by Diarmaid MacCulloch is now available in paperback from Penguin Credits Presenter: Peter Moore Guest: Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch Recording/Live Mix: Hannah Griffiths Post production: Maria Nolan More from History Today Derek Wilson on Thomas Cromwell: Brewer’s Boy Made Good Andy Holroyde on Predicting the Fall of Anne Boleyn Suzannah Lipscomb on Who Was Henry VIII?

This week on Beer is a Conversation Matt is joined by Diarmaid O'Mordha, Quality & Sustainability Manager at Endeavour Drinks Group, the business that runs Dan Murphy's and BWS. These retailers hold an interesting place in the Australian drinks world. On the one hand they are held up as giants shading out small independent bottleshops and skewing the shape of the drinks landscape. On the other, they are outlets where more Australians buy alcohol than any other, and they are increasingly major partners to some of your favourite craft beer brands by becoming their defacto distributors. With such an influence on the beer marketplace, Endeavour can have a major effect on the beers that you drink. Freshness and drinking quality are increasingly becoming a talking point around the craft beer community and the major retailers exert a huge influence over the market. As Quality & Sustainability Manager, Diarmaid is at the centre of the decisions that BWS and Dans are making in the beer space, so this is a fascinating and timely chat about beer, retail, freshness and quality. Enjoy the conversation.
