Snowboarding was weirdly big in the '90s, wasn't it? For the big 80, the boys pay tribute to this forgotten genre by covering the most—and least—memorable titles that involve that most extreme of extreme sports, from the ones you know like SSX and Amped to oddities like Steep Slope Sliders and Evolution Snowboarding. Technically we don't talk about *every* snowboarding game in this almost two-hour pod, but this one might just set a Time Extend record for number of different games discussed. Even Final Fantasy VII gets a passing mention! For more between each podcast, follow @time_extend on Twitter, timeextend on TikTok and Twitch, and visit timeextend.carrd.co to join our Discord.

Sections played: Episode 1 Issues covered: reviewing our spooky season, feeling like a 2010 game, the Alan Wake DLC for Control, hard to compare with other developers, doubling down on a hook, connecting their games together, featuring the preoccupations of one writer, reviewing 2010, an open world game, systemic survival games, thinking about some open horror games, empowerment and lack of dread, being close to a visual narrative, stitching together narrative, simple combat, graphic novel treatments and tv treatments, iterating on what they do well, bullet time, theming around narrative, making you a little unsettled, thin interactivity, leaning on Stephen King, the Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks connection, the early ages of narrative design and adding writing, pacing out in an open world version, cross-pollination, licensed music, the diner scene, what is reality, too many puzzle boxes, not worrying about the threads too much, the Riddler writes in, Brett's Arkham City Riddler progress, having a controller for the first time, the mouse and the flash-in-the-pan, a great first controller game. Well hello there everybody! Welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk! In this, Episode 74 , we've got a big bag of holiday cheer in store for you! We start of the show by talking about our Christmas wish lists and what games we may be hoping that Santa brings from the North Pole this year before getting into our Platinum shout outs and another round of patented jokes and riddles from Eli. From there we get into Patreon submitted questions which include a look at what the spirit of Christmas means to us these days as we all reside in our 30s, a thorough look at Blasphemous and if we'll ever play it or not, and what games we think are the "coziest" in the business. Finally, we get into some trophy list reviews and for this month we have a good mix for you. Eli goes old school SSX with his examination of "Shredders", Darryl braves the survival horror of "The Calisto Protocol," and Colin continues to embrace RPGs by looking at "Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion." We hope you enjoy the lists, and the show. Thank you for listening and happy gaming!

CafeFoxI hate creating unnecessary accounts for things. When I played SSX for PS3, I had to sign up for an EA account. SheekagoMaybe that's why they could premiere 3 episodes at once. They rushed the editing and pacing. SheekagoI think I'm in Chapter 3 of Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I'm enjoying it CafeFoxRecommended JRPG for PS2/PS4: Rogue Galaxy. enjoyed!

It's Barking, 1978. We're playing an away match against the Under 9 Tigers, and I'm in goal, being the team's only goalkeeper, and despite my repeated request for new kneepads being consistently denied. “Ain't got the funds, lad” was the constant refrain from the manager, Keith, ever clad in his suede coat, gold chains, and cashmere polo neck: the standard uniform at the time of people who had large status in small towns. Last minute penalties. Unprotected joints. A striker four years my senior, having been kept back several years in school on account of his behavioural issues. Why his academic progression was reflected by the local football league is and will remain a mystery, but you must accept it for the purposes of this narrative. The point is: he was three times my size, and his legs were pneumatic pistons that could boot my head clean off and barely notice. Mercifully, he booted the ball, rather than my skull, which was saved from his kinetic anger only by virtue of not being the object on the ground in front of him. The ball soared toward the back of the net, and would have punched a hole through the stand and into the dry cleaners across the main road outside, were it not for my left knee. My unprotected left knee. Which, as it happens, did not impede the ball's journey into the net. We lost, naturally. The parents of my squad were furious at Keith for his reckless spendthriftery: for just 89 new pence, a brand new set of knee pads could have saved both my leg from breaking and our place in the junior league. “FIFA, you idiot, Keith!” they screamed. “FIFA doesn't apply to amateurs, Terry!” screamed Keith back at them. “It's a universal principle, Keith! Football in, football 'aht!” added Manky Paul, the groundsman, by way of explanation. “If yer don't invest, you'll never see a return!”. And he added: "You plonker!". “Piffle” said Keith, before an angry mob kicked his head in. And from that day to this, I've understood a fundamental principle of life: you only get out what you put in. Whether that's funding, enthusiasm, or taking the time to leave little five star reviews of your favourite gaming podcasts so the people involved can continue producing this wonderful content. Welcome to VG247's The Best Games Ever Podcast: Ep.19 - The Best Game With An Acronised Name Like 'FIFA' That Isn't FIFA. “What is VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast?” you ask while wondering if the intro story is what you think it is and if it really happened. Yes and yes. I don't recommend it. Anyway, this podcast, which is why you're on this page, is essentially a 30-minute panel show where people (me and some others on VG247) decide on the best game in a specific category. That's it. It's good. Listen to it. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post or don't want to listen but do want to know what games we picked), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning. W A R N I N G The Best Game With An Acronised Name Like 'FIFA' That Isn't FIFA This is the topic of Episode nineteen of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Alex - SSX Tricky Before we get into if we're morons for choosing games that have an acronym rather than an initialism, let's put that to one side for a moment and talk about which of these games are the best. It has to be SSX Tricky, right? Hailing from an era when it was just cooler to have an abbreviated name, SSX actually stands for Snowboard Supercross. As well as being a good game, it abbreviates 'cross' into X - which is even cooler. It is the obvious winner based on that alone - tack on the soundtrack and a generally killer feel-good attitude, and it's tough to argue against. James – DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) The ultimate party game, the ultimate arcade game, DDR is as much kinetic fun whether you're playing on a giant silver stage with credits on the line or a crinkly dance mat in front of the TV. With tons of classic pop songs and funky original numbers building out an awesome roster of tunes you just can't help but stomp along to, there's no better game for getting up, getting down, and moving all around (especially when there's booze in your body). With myriad entries over a 20 year history, Dance Dance Revolution is one of gaming's great underrated franchises; instantly recognisable and loved by all ages, casual and hardcore gamers alike. Sherif - F.E.A.R Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 is a game for perverts, but I had no idea I swear. I swear to god I didn't know. I, a pure 13 year old, thought I was buying a cheap fighting game. So what if it had bikinis on the front, how was I supposed to know it was softcore porn? The lads at the GameStation let me buy it, it's their fault when you think about it. If you like beach volleyball it's allegedly the focus of the game. You're meant to build up a friendship with a variety of women in order to improve your overall performance at seaside sports. You can also play tug of war and "butt battles" by the pool, but you can't even parry incoming ass blasts so what's the point, to be honest. You can, believe it or not, also do jet ski races. In fact, it was one of the major selling points for the game, according to revered DOA historians. It did have a casino though, which was fun, but the game was a totally different package than what I was expecting. In hindsight I probably should have thought of a thought-provoking genre-twisting game, but the moment I saw the podcast brief Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 was the only thing that came to mind. I am sorry.   Come back in a week for another episode of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Trump's Truth Disaster Chad Dixon Another entertaining and informative show gentleman. Some feedback for Gareth regarding my mobile gaming experiences. I had a ZX Spectrum back in the early 80's and loved playing those cassette-loaded games. However I never was a fan of pc or console gaming and hence never used independent joysticks. My first foray into gaming on-the-go was when I got a PSP. I think SSX on Tour Snowboarding was my favourite as it had a brilliant soundtrack. Since then I've done all my gaming exclusively on smartphones because I always have one with me and the recent models' processors can handle the intense graphics. I have been known to be playing Call of Duty Mobile for three hours straight on my Samsung Galaxy S20FE and not suffer any RSI. Matthew Jones on the Yamaha Organ Very enjoyable show. The Yamaha organ part was a nice trip down memory lane too and it's amazing how far that particular tech has come. Despite not being able to play properly, I had Keyboards, Drum machines, an Atari 1040ste and lots of midi cables in my failed attempts of Bedroom music production! I'd guess about £1,500 of kit, and this was considered not even entry level, probably more like "toy" level. Fast forward to 2022, and a £50 (used) iPhone 6S and Garageband can do a way better job than all my old kit did! Look on YouTube at a channel called iSongs. It blew my mind and shows quite how powerful this tech has become. (I recommend Sweet Home Alabama

This week is a bit different. Cory and Basher each played a game and are going to discuss how they felt and if you should check out these games on Game Pass. Edge of Eternity is an RPG that dreams big with its 50-hour journey. But asking 50 hours out of player is a lot. Nailing RPG mechanics is no easy task and Edge of Eternity is a full fledge RPG with crafting and other various mechanics to aid you on your journey. But are the story and RPG mechanics strong? Shredders is on the total opposite end of the spectrum. Taking inspiration from games like Amped, Shredders looks to have a goofy and fun time while kicking up some powder and nailing some epic tricks. The snowboarding extreme sports genre was once a hot area for games, but it peaked. Since peaking only EA has really tried again with stuff like 2012's SSX remake. Shredders is the first game in a long time trying to hit that niche but are the physics and mission structure any good to keep the player engaged? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/game-pass-or-pass/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/game-pass-or-pass/support

Hey Listener, for the first time in the history of the podcast, I don't have a guest. My wife caught a breakthrough case of Covid and I did to, I just didn't know it at the time of this recording. We are both fully recovered at this time. Because of this I didn't want to bring a guest into the basement this week. Instead I did my first ever solo episode where I recount my 35 year history of playing video games. Topics this week include: My retirement plan is to party hard. The Atari 2600, my new babysitter. Super Mario Bros turns a casual fan into a life long gamer. Metroid wasn't made for 6 year olds. I love games where you get to head kick punk rockers to save the President. Making friends with people that have the consoles you don't have. The Playstation 1 was my system for high school. Picking the wrong skateboarding game. Trying to say SSX is tricky. The PS2 and my love of NCAA Football, the only good thing in my life at that time. Madden is trash. Burnout is my favorite racing franchise of all time. Everyone needs to play Katamari Damacy at least once in their life. Drinking and Karting. Making the jump to the X-Box 360. Getting Red Ringed. The Arkham series. Fallout 3 is in the conversation for my favorite game of all time. Big Daddy subwoofer. Rock Band is my favorite multiplayer game of all time. Shout out Ryan Halter for the PS 3 (and 4) so that I got to play the Last of Us. You should play Cuphead and Sunset Overdrive on the Xbox One. I wish more games had progression systems like Far Cry 3. 40 years old, playing a PS4, and really getting into audio equipment. Doing moonsaults off of towers in Spiderman. Titanfall 2 really makes me want to play Titanfall 3. I'm finally playing The Witcher III.  *"I'll Sleep When I'm Dead III" has been postponed to 2022 due to a scheduling conflict.

The Long & Short of It

Cast your mind back to 2000, you've just opened the big blue box that your brand new PlayStation 2 came in, you turn on the system for the first time and BAM, you're playing SSX. Join us this week as we discuss the extreme sports giant that is SSX. Does it still stand up as the best snow boarding game of all time?
