In this episode, join Julie Henningsen and Kaycee McIntosh as they dive into the astonishing story of Dr. Alain Bombard, a French physician and biologist who, in 1952, undertook an audacious scientific experiment. To prove that humans could survive adrift at sea using only ocean resources, Bombard set off to drift across the Atlantic Ocean in a small inflatable dinghy, without food or water. Over the course of 65 harrowing days, he endured severe conditions, subsisting on raw fish, plankton, and minimal sea water. Explore his motivations, the challenges he faced, and how his journey revolutionized maritime survival techniques. Despite criticism and controversy, Bombard's story is a testament to human endurance, ingenuity, and the relentless drive to push the boundaries of what is deemed possible. 00:00 Introduction and Setup 00:23 The Craziest Ocean Experiment in History 01:30 Meet Dr. Alain Bombard 03:19 The Motivation Behind the Journey 05:42 The Harsh Realities of Maritime Survival 08:30 Bombard's Unwavering Determination 24:28 Preliminary Voyages and Lessons Learned 31:16 The Resilience of Seaweed and Plankton 32:43 Bombard's Departure and Initial Challenges 36:00 Surviving on Plankton and Isolation 37:48 Nature's Cruel Challenges 40:22 Wildlife Encounters and Near-Death Experiences 45:24 The Encounter with the British Cargo Vessel 49:15 Final Stretch and Arrival in Barbados 55:32 Bombard's Legacy and Influence 01:00:25 Modern Survival Stories and Techniques 01:03:34 The True Lesson of Bombard's Journey Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ Read Dr. Bombard's book for free online. https://archive.org/details/the-bombard-story-1953/page/n27/mode/2up

In his 1962 book, Propaganda, Jacques Ellul outlines three conditions for propaganda's success. Bombard people with excessive information so they will forget, always have “breaking news” so they do not reflect or think critically, and have no North Star or standard to measure deviation. As Christians we are called to remember, called to think, and called to follow our certain and firm North Star. Dr. Stephen J. Nichols, president of Reformation Bible College and chief academic officer for Ligonier Ministries, discussed how a Christian worldview speaks to these conditions and encourages us to both speak and live truthfully in difficult times.Support the show

The Ugly Truth about the Visitor Levy in Scotland

Richardson's Rubicon - Escape to EverQuest

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 17:38

Right, let's cut to the chase. On the latest Richardson's Rubicon, I tore into this new Visitor Levy Scotland's rolled out. Frankly, it's infuriating, and I won't sugarcoat it.First things first: don't let them spin this as a “tourist tax.” It's a charge on everyone staying in accommodation—yes, even your cousin from Manchester here for a weekend. And mark my words, every council in Scotland will slap this on, padding their budgets with CoSLA, the SNP, and local authorities nodding it through. It's completely unlike tourist taxes. It's a percentage rate that scales upward the longer to stay somewhere and in higher quality places, it's off the scale.https://argyllandbutevisitorlevy.com/argyll-and-bute-visitor-levy-why-a-percentage/I've run a B&B for years—I know taxes are part of the game. But this rate they're pushing? It's outrageous. The roads near my place are riddled with potholes, services are collapsing, yet council bosses pocket pay rises while the rest of us cough up more. Where's the logic? Here's the kicker, though: this levy isn't just about money. It's overreach. Council officials demanding the right to march into my property, inspect my books? Not on my watch. And the paperwork they want? Half of it's irrelevant to calculating the tax! What really grinds my gears? They've sidelined the trade bodies representing accommodation providers. We're the ones keeping Scottish tourism afloat, yet our concerns are brushed aside while the SNP and CoSLA fiddle with their grand plans. Short-sighted doesn't even begin to cover it.And let's talk consequences. Jack up accommodation costs, and visitors will vanish overnight. Domestic tourism will plummet, and Scotland's economy will take a hit no spreadsheet in Holyrood can fix.So here's the plan: push back. Bombard every public consultation, buttonhole your local councillor, make your voice heard. And if any of them fancy defending this shambles on my show? I'll give them airtime—and a fair hearing, though they'll need to bring a strong case.Right, I'll wrap up here. Swing by the website if you've got thoughts. Cheers,JohnP.S. Share this far and wide. Email overload! This week's quiz: On 7 December, I asked you a question about the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which had just begun to hear evidence from 98 countries and 12 organizations about climate change, and how to establish rules for rich nations to support poorer ones, who are on the frontlines of climate change. It's a landmark case: brought by students in 2019 from the University of Vanuatu – the Pacific Island nation heavily impacted by climate change – led to a UN General Assembly resolution in 2023, asking the ICJ for a formal opinion on the legal obligations of states to protect the climate system. The court will also consider whether large polluting nations can be held liable for damages to vulnerable countries like small island states. You were to re-read Paul Myer's article “Small island nations lead fight for climate justice at UN's top court”, and send in the answer to this question: In addition to the small island states and developing countries, who else will the ICJ hear from? The answer is, to quote Paul's article: “The court will also hear from the United States and China – the world's top two emitters of greenhouse gases. The oil producer group OPEC will also give its views. The 15 judges at the ICJ will hear submissions until 13 December and deliver their decision next year.”In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by Liton Ahamed Mia from Naogaon, Bangladesh: What do you remember about your first boat journey, and how did you feel when you were back on land?Do you have a bonus question idea? On va faire demi-tour.

I recently outfitted my house with some kind of weird, invisible energy called Quantum Upgrade.  What's crazy is that as soon as I "flipped the switch" to turn it on (you'll hear more about how and why I did that in today's show), I couldn't sleep for nearly three days straight, so I'm pretty sure I turned it on too high.  But after I adjusted it, I started to notice a profound increase in daytime energy levels, a drop in afternoon sluggishness, and an overall feeling of improved mood and well-being that made me suspect there might be more going on here than a placebo effect.  So I decided to get the mastermind behind this energetic "Quantum Upgrade" on the show. His name is Philipp von Holtzendorff-Fehling, and he first joined me on the show: "How To Charge Any Object In Your Home (Or Your Own Body) With Healing Frequencies: The Future Of Quantum Energy & EMF Protection," in which we talked about little-known but intriguing ways to energize your body, your foods, your supplements, and even your pets with strange-looking devices and necklaces spread around the house and on your body. Quantum Upgrade (use code BEN15  to get a 15-day free trial) Full Show Notes: https://bengreenfieldlife.com/quantumupgrade Episode Sponsors: Organifi Green Juice: Start your day with essential superfoods that help detox the body, lower cravings, & reduce stress.
