No, I'm not amused. Today's Trump vs Musk social media wrestling fiasco is one more example of how digital media is actually bemusing ourselves to death. Walter Lippmann, the brilliant but emotionally detached journalist who coined the term "stereotype," foresaw this nightmare a century ago. Lippmann's intellectual biographer Tom Arnold-Forster explains how Lippmann's theories about "manufactured consent" and the manipulation of public opinion by media barons anticipated everything from the Trump-Musk social media feuds to dehumanizing AI-generated content. Lippmann identified democracy's central paradox: we need informed citizens to self-govern, yet the modern world is too complex for anyone to fully understand. His 1919 warning is even truer today: "The present crisis of Western democracy is a crisis in journalism." Five Key Takeaways * Democracy's Impossible Paradox: Lippmann identified that modern democracy demands citizens make informed decisions about a world too complex for anyone—even experts—to fully understand. We're stuck needing public opinion to govern while being unable to form truly informed opinions.* The Stereotype Machine: Lippmann literally invented the modern concept of "stereotype" as a way information gets simplified and transmitted between people. He'd likely see AI as the ultimate "stereotype machine"—endlessly reproducing the most probable combinations rather than generating new insights.* Manufactured Consent Crisis: His core warning was that when consent-manufacturing becomes "unregulated private enterprise" (think Hearst then, Musk now), democracy itself is threatened. The solution isn't eliminating commercial media but professionalizing journalism within it.* Expertise Must Serve Democracy: Despite being labeled an elitist, Lippmann actually argued that expertise should ultimately be subject to democratic control. He attacked anti-democratic "experts" like eugenicist Lewis Terman as frauds.* Journalism = Democracy: Lippmann's most prescient insight: "The present crisis of Western democracy is in an exact sense a crisis in journalism." Today's democratic struggles are inseparable from our information crisis—fake news, social media manipulation, and the collapse of trusted news sources.Tom Arnold-Forster is the Kinder Career Development Fellow in Atlantic History at the University of Oxford's Rothermere American Institute. His writing has appeared in the Historical Journal, Modern Intellectual History, American Journalism, the Journal of American Studies, and Dissent.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Paul Hoppe with Co-hosts, Drs Mike Flynn and Gene Shively discuss the epidemic of gun shootings and killings in the US focusing on school shootings. Our Guest, Psychiatrist Dr Steve Lippmann offers insight to the causes and possible solutions.
We're continuing with the stories about Luxembourgish Nobel Prize winners: Gabriel Lippmann can proudly claim the title of one of the pioneers bagging the award in 1908 – for figuring out how to reproduce colours in photos using a special effect called interference. But that's not all. Before his big breakthrough, Lippmann made some fascinating discoveries in physics, including how electricity and tiny capillary tubes work together. This led him to invent the Lippmann electrometer, which was actually used in the very first ECG machine! His story shows that sometimes, life leads us in surprising directions, guiding us from what we think we want to what we were meant to do all along. Find out more at www.bourgmeisterin.com!

CFO Kfir Lippmann began his career at Ernst & Young in Tel Aviv, auditing high-growth tech clients and navigating the intricacies of IPO-bound businesses. The experience gave him a deep understanding of strategic finance early on, Lippmann tells us. Later, he joined Monday.com when it was still a small startup, helping scale the organization through multiple investment rounds and significant secondary transactions. These transactions, which allow employees to sell shares prior to an IPO, can be tricky to manage from a morale standpoint. “It's about maintaining fairness and long-term vision,” Lippmann tells us.By educating employees about responsible wealth management, Lippmann tellsus he was able to preserve the company's collaborative culture and harness momentum for broader strategic goals. His approach to finance leadership emphasizes transparency and data-driven decisions across all functions, not simply “being the bad guy,” Lippmann tells us. Now as CFO of Salt Security, he applies the same philosophy of aligning metrics with execution to drive both rapid expansion and operational discipline. From orchestrating multi-million-dollar funding efforts to shaping sustainable corporate cultures, Lippmann's journey underscores how secondary transactions—appropriately handled—can spark innovative thinking and sustainable growth.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Austrian-British economist Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom (1944) in which Hayek (1899-1992) warned that the way Britain was running its wartime economy would not work in peacetime and could lead to tyranny. His target was centralised planning, arguing this disempowered individuals and wasted their knowledge, while empowering those ill-suited to run an economy. He was concerned about the support for the perceived success of Soviet centralisation, when he saw this and Fascist systems as two sides of the same coin. When Reader's Digest selectively condensed Hayek's book in 1945, and presented it not so much as a warning against tyranny as a proof against socialism, it became phenomenally influential around the world.

This weeks show begins a new series called Democracy Propaganda where we go over the history of the pioneers of modern Public Relations, mind control, and all things related. This episode focuses on Edward Bernays' predecessor, Walter Lippmann who wrote the famous books Public Opinion 1922, and Phantom Public 1925. Lippmann was an American Fabian, and early member of The Council On Foreign Relations, and worked for the OSS, and eventually wrote for The New Republic and various mainstream news outlets. We touch on the American Fabians and find a surprise link to TWDSO. We'll get into Sigmund Freud who was Bernays' uncle, and eventually, the father of PR himself in coming episodes. Oh, and this series wouldn't be complete without also taking another look at the Tavistock Institute as well. Now, time to get down that rabbit hole, far beyond the mainstream! Defamation Laws and Wrestling: An AnalysisIn this episode of Wrestling Soup, the show's 'diabolical lawyer', Jeff Lippmann, provides an in-depth discussion about the concept of defamation, especially in relation to the wrestling world. He explains how defamation is defined under common law, the differences between slander and libel, why free speech is protected, and why proving defamation is more complex than it seems. He dives especially deep into the implications for both public and private figures. Walter Lippmann was arguably the most recognized and respected political journalist of the twentieth century. His "Today and Tomorrow" columns attracted a global readership of well over ten million. Lippmann was the author of numerous books, including the best-selling A Preface to Morals (1929) and U.S. Foreign Policy (1943). His Public Opinion (1922) remains a classic text within American political philosophy and media studies. Lippmann coined or popularized several keywords of the twentieth century, including "stereotype," the "Cold War," and the "Great Society." Sought out by U.S. Presidents and by America's allies and rivals around the world, Lippmann remained one of liberalism's most faithful proponents and harshest critics. Yet few people then or since encountered the "real" Walter Lippmann. That was because he kept crucial parts of himself hiding in plain sight. His extensive commentary on politics and diplomacy was bounded by his sense that America had to adjust to the loss of a common faith and morality in a "post-Christian" era. Over the course of his life, Lippmann traded in his fame as a happy secularist for the stardom of a grumpy Western Christian intellectual. Yet he never committed himself to any religious system, especially his own Jewish heritage. Walter Lippmann: American Skeptic, American Pastor (Oxford University Press, 2023) considers the role of religions in Lippmann's life and thought, prioritizing his affirmation and rejection of Christian nationalisms of the left and right. It also yields fresh insights into the philosophical origins of modern American liberalism, including liberalism's blind spots in the areas of sex, race, and class. But most importantly, this biography highlights the constructive power of doubt. For Lippmann, the good life in the good society was lived in irreconcilable tension: the struggle to be free from yet loyal to a way of life; to recognize the dangers yet also the necessity of civil religion; and to strive for a just and enduring world order that can never be. In the end, Lippmann manufactured himself as the prophet of limitation for an extravagant American Century. "He [Bernays] proposed to his uncle that he'd do a translation of this book that had been given to him and Freud, perhaps without thinking too much about it, approved the idea. Bernays went about hiring a translator who was a psychology Ph.D. student that he found at Columbia University and he got Stanley Hall to write an introduction for what was published in 1920 as ‘A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis'. Now, shortly after this happened, Freud had second thoughts about authorizing Bernays to translate his lectures, particularly as he had been working with his trusted colleague Ernest Jones on translations. But by the time Freud wired Bernays to try to stop this publication, Bernays said that it was already too late and that the advertisements had already been placed and the publication was proceeding. Bernays assured Freud that it would be all right and he also assured him that he would get fame and glory and also substantial recompense for the publication. Freud was not too happy about this, nor was Ernest Jones, and when they finally received the translation that Bernays had done they were particularly upset." Episode Description: We begin by describing the complicated bloodline between Freud and Edward Bernays - Bernays' mother was Freud's sister, and his father was the brother of Freud's wife. We then consider Bernays' role as the founder of the field of public relations. This has led many to inaccurately see him as a manipulator of the masses through the use of his uncle's theories. In fact, Bernays served as the pro-bono literary agent for Freud's books in the US which contributed to his popularization and to providing vital financial support during the years of Austria's hyperinflation. We also discuss Bernays' role in the American pro-democracy movement, which was designed to counter the influence of Nazi propaganda in the years before WWII. We close with Joseph's describing his interest in this subject and his wish to "set the record straight" about Edward Bernays. Our Guest: Joseph Malherek is a historian who holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was the Junior Botstiber Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University, and he has been a Fulbright Visiting Professor of Austrian-American Studies at the University of Vienna. He has published widely on the topics of transatlantic migration, twentieth-century intellectual history, and the history of capitalism and consumer culture. Author Sara Lippmann returns to The Virtual Memories Show after almost a decade to celebrate her debut novel, LECH (Tortoise Books). We talk about how she had to move out of her comfort zone of short fiction (see her collections Doll Palace and Jerks) to write a novel, whether she felt guilty teaching a course on novel-writing before she'd finished her first one, the research that went into writing a book about the Catskills in decline, and what it means to find the right container for a story. We also get into the book's title, and how it plays off of the Biblical notion of Lech Lecha ("go forth") and the tradition of novels named after their protagonists' last names (Herzog, Stern, Jernigan), and how LECH looks at those books through a feminist lens. On top of that, we discuss the silliness of "literary immortality" and what it means that almost no one reads Saul Bellow anymore, my absolutely ingenious idea for changing the nature of my podcast, how she took up running at 40 to combat depression, the moment she learned to stop caring about external validation, and the new novel she's working on. Oh, and I stupidly ask her for a writing prompt. Follow Sara on Twitter and Instagram • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

It's a great way to make your audience or customer take the next step of buying your programs. There's also a thing called The Tripwire Launch. It's similar to the Evergreen Launch; the only difference is you will not use a gift. Instead, you can use a high-value but low-cost program you have to make them buy more from you.The Challenge Launch - This method is about creating high-value content related to the thing you are selling for, usually five days long, paired in your Livestream. You're leading your customers to take your offers while in your Livestream. The Webinar Launch - Similar to The Challenge Launch, this method is used in Livestreams. First, set up a webinar where you can present your adding value offers in a much more personal approach. The Waitlist Launch - This method works by sending out a few weeks of free content related to your offer. It provides a way for your audience to get on a waitlist, where you get to engage with your most interested audience and sell them higher-priced products or programs.About Amy LippmanAmy is a marketing strategist and Institute for Integrative Nutrition graduate. What is the role of the press in a democracy? For nearly a century, scholars, media critics, and politicians have debated this question—in a large part thanks to Walter Lippmann. Lippmann's 1922 book, Public Opinion, changed the conversation about how to educate voters and who should be able to vote at all. In this episode, University of British Columbia professor Heidi Tworek discusses the timeless questions and the man who asked them. Heidi Tworek is assistant professor of international history at the University of British Columbia. She is an editor of The Journal of Global History and the author of News from Germany: The Competition to Control World Communications, 1900–1945. See more information on our website, WritLarge.fm.
