In that moment with the person in front of you. Flip the switch. Understand your power. And deeply care for others. Be warm, not cold. And it's important that each of these is expressed with authenticity. That's how to develop more charisma. How to develop our protocol - A simple exercise. Get a sheet of paper. On one side write “DO.” On the other side, write “DON'T.” Think of yourself at your best, what do you do? That's your protocol. And remember that the worse you feel, the more committed you need to be to your protocol It's always day one. Brian thinks of his time spent with the Navy SEALs. They work to earn their trident every single day. Today is the day. It's always the right day to earn it. It's always day 1. Arete – An ancient Greek word. We translate it into English as ‘virtue' or ‘excellence,' but it has a deeper meaning. Something closer to ‘expressing the best version of yourself moment to moment to moment.' Inter-leaving - The basic idea is simple: If you want to learn something, you're better off varying your practice rather than grooving one identical rep after another. Epictetus - One of his students took great lecture notes and captured his wisdom in a manual called the Enchiridion. The Greek word for Enchiridion is translated as “handbook,” and it's important to note that the word literally means “within” + “hand.” Intrinsic versus Extrinsic motivation – Which motivation leads to greater levels of happiness and flourishing? Why? It's why people who get to the peak of what David Brooks calls the “First Mountain” look around and wonder why they don't feel fulfilled. They got all the stuff they were told would make them happy and… they're not. Phil Stutz wrote the Foreword – Practice comprised of unusual people. “They refuse to be defined by any single accomplishment. Their Identity is based on a process of endless possibility. They don't stop creating.” Two primary obstacles getting in our way are fear and laziness. This comes from Phil Stutz... AM and PM Bookends – “Get these right and you're 80% there.” Targeted thinking - What do I want? What's needed to get that done? Consistency - "Who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say." Unshakeable confidence -- Anti-fragile confidence. You have intense trust that you have what it takes to respond. Anti-Fragility - The more life kicks you around, the better you get. Emotional stamina - The worse you feel, the more committed you are to your protocol. Protocol - Think of yourself at your best... What are you doing? Hero - An ancient Greek word for protector Get clear on your identity Sleep, meditate, work out, work, love Pilots have checklists before they fly a plane... We should use one too each day. Create your "Do" and "Don't" list Intrinsic vs Extrinsic motivation -- Deepend relationships, help in your community, focus on your eulogy virtues today... Piggybacking off of last week’s episode on Emotional Intelligence, today I’m diving into a new topic: Emotional Stamina. While speaking with our last guest, Megan de la Concha, I discovered that there is a difference between Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Stamina and I thought today would be a good day to let it all hang out and freestyle an episode about that.   Remember that at the My Divine Life Podcast we empower ourselves to divinely design every aspect of our lives the way God purposed them to be. And sometimes, when things are rough, we need to remember this and begin developing our Emotional Stamina to just keep ongoing.    Show Notes: [0:52] - This was a very difficult week for Jameelah and she is exhausted.  [1:59] - After last week’s episode with Megan de la Concha, this episode is a piggyback on her topic of Emotional Intelligence. [2:56] - Emotional Stamina is having the wherewithal to bounce back and be resilient through day to day life. [4:03] - The way that Jameelah is able to pick herself back up is due to her strong emotional stamina. Even prior to losing her daughter, but when Ryen passed, she had to put herself back together. [4:49] - Jameelah compares our unique selves to mosaics. We are beautiful broken pieces that can be put back together to be even more beautiful. [6:07] - This week, Jameelah learned some information that is life-changing. Although it is hard for her to deal with, she is still recording this episode to keep going. [7:03] - In order to build your Emotional Stamina, you have to seek to learn the lesson in what is happening immediately. You can give yourself time to cry, but you have to learn the lesson. [8:19] - Always hold on to the truth of the matter. Don’t jump into the rabbit hole and entertain the what-ifs. [9:10] - Another tip for Jameelah is to be honest. You have to be honest about how you feel. Don’t try to force yourself into feeling the way you think you should. [10:08] - It is okay if your feelings and emotions change quickly. It can happen, but you need to acknowledge the emotion and be honest about it. [10:47] - Something important in building Emotional Stamina is journaling, meditation, and prayer. [11:21] - While journaling, Jameelah wrote her thoughts and wrote messages to the people she felt have violated her and her trust. [12:08] - Rather than cussing out the person she is writing to, Jameelah tries to keep her vibration high and talk to the spirit of the people who wronged her. [13:27] - Through these practices of speaking your mind and being honest about it, you are working on forgiveness from your highest self. [14:16] - The last step in this Emotional Stamina growth, is to see a therapist. In order to fully grow in this area, a therapist will help tremendously. [15:18] - Jameelah knows a lot of truth but she admits that sometimes it is hard to follow through with what she teaches. OPTIMIZE with Brian Johnson | More Wisdom in Less Time

In our last +1 we talked about the fact that, as per legendary tough guy Vince Lombardi, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.”    Then we operationalized a super-simple antidote to cowardice via a super-simple PM Bookend routine. (How’d that go for you?)   I mentioned the fact that we’d connect that fatigue-coward phenomenon to my heart rate monitor. So, let’s.   Not too long ago, I introduced you to my Suunto watch. Love it. Works great.    … Except when it doesn’t!   Every once in awhile, I’ll be training at a mellow pace and my watch will be telling me that my heart rate is WAY higher than it could possibly be.    To put it in perspective, my target Maffetone-approved aerobic zone is 131 to 141. I usually train in that zone every other day. On my mellow recovery days, I do the same trail at a slower pace and stay well below that 131.   So, imagine my surprise one day when I’m going at a super mellow pace and look down at my watch to see it telling me that I’m at 160-something. I’m like, “Really? No way. That’s not possible. I’m pretty sure I’m not blowing up right now.” (Hah.)   So… I got my strip detector things a little wet via a little spit. Didn’t help. I took off my heart rate monitor strap. Put it back on. Still didn’t help.   I’m basically standing still and it’s telling me I’m still blowing up.   Hah! D’oh.    Hmmmmmm…   Now… As a Professional Optimizer/Lover of Wisdom, I’m not allowed to waste lemon squeezing opportunities so, after a moment of almost-frustration I carried on with my hike and decided to simply ignore the data.   Which is when the metaphorical learning moment hit me.   That data from the heart rate monitor was, for whatever reason, literally USELESS for me during that workout.    So I ignored it.   Guess what?   You know that voice in your head that shows up when you’re tired?    You know, the voice that says: “Life sucks boo hoo yada yada yada blah blah blah. Etc. Etc. Etc.”   Guess what?   When you’re tired, that “data” your mind throws at you is about as useful as my broken heart rate monitor.   IGNORE IT.   Carry on with your day.   Go build your Emotional Stamina muscles as you execute your protocol and practice having good bad days. Then figure out what “Needs work!” so you can wake up tomorrow feeling WAY better—with a working monitor that gives you good data.   That’s Today’s +1.   Happy Trails!
