Please take care in listening, as this episode features content that may be difficult for some listeners. Ella goes on another great date with Isaac only further confusing her thoughts on her relationship with Reed. (As Val would say, girl, pick a man... But in Ella's defense, it's a tough choice…). Brooke forces the Royals to participate in a family photo shoot even though she tells Ella that she plans to leak the video. If that's not enough, Reed and Ella start to notice Easton's concerning change in behavior.• Follow [The Royals of Malibu on Patreon to listen to episode Ep 12 TODAY, upcoming scripts for purchase, and much more] (https://www.patreon.com/TheRoyalsofMalibu) • Follow [The Royals of Malibu on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/theroyalsofmalibu/)• Follow [The Royals of Malibu on TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@theroyalsofmalibu)• Explore more: [diversionaudio.com](https://diversionaudio.com)The Royals of Malibu is a production of Diversion Audio in association with Pod People. It's fair to say Erica Dawson has had a big year in 2021 for a number of different reasons. She broke her leg in a training accident only five weeks before the Tokyo Olympics, but made a speedy recovery to take her place alongside Micah Wilkinson in the Nacra 17. She also joined the New Zealand SailGP Team and made history when she became the first Kiwi woman to compete in the high-octane sailing circuit. Erica reflects on the last 18 months, the highs and the lows. She talks about what it was like to be selected for the Olympics only to go through the uncertainty of not knowing if she'd actually get to go and compete, how she coped with breaking her leg in the leadup to the Games and what her experience was actually like in Japan. She also delves into life on the SailGP tour and what it's like sail on the foiling catamarans. Erica is also an advocate for women's sailing and played a leading hand in the development of Yachting New Zealand's Women and Girls in Sailing Strategy and talks in this podcast about what she'd like to see over the next few years.

On this month's episode Abby talks to two sailors who have had very different journeys to the Tokyo Olympic Games. Her first guest is Susann Beucke from Germany, for which Tokyo was her third attempt to compete at the Games. Susann has campaigned in the 470 class and most recently has competed in the 49erFX class, winning the European Championships in 2020 and going on to win an Olympic silver medal at Tokyo. Susann shares her highlights and lowlights of her long road to Tokyo.Abby's second guest is Erica Dawson from Aukland, New Zealand, competing in her first Olympic Games in the Nacra 17 class, a mixed crew, foiling catamaran with Micah Wilkinson. Erica's dream of going to an Olympic Games were initially in the 49erFX but she switched to the foiling catamaran in 2018, firstly as helm, before teaming up with Micah in the middle of 2019 and switching to crew. The pair showed their huge potential when finishing seventh at the Nacra 17 World Championships in Geelong, Australia and they are coached by two-time Olympic medallist Jo Aleh. Erica suffered a huge setback in training five weeks out from the Games, and we hear about the incident, her coping strategy and her experience at Tokyo.Host: Abby EhlerA co-production of WiSP Sports and The Magenta ProjectFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Jeena zooms into quarantine podcasting with this deep dive into the 90s kid classic The Sandlot. In keeping with the film's questionable gender politics, Jeena switches the roles as Jeena is joined by lady and Sandlot/softball expert Erica Dawson and the Jeena's fellow unsporty comedian Joseph Schles. Everybody confesses to having special feelings stirred as kids by The Sandlot's ethnically ambiguous older boys and having their anger stirred as adults by the movie's skeevy poolside kiss and choice of ultimate insult. All you buttsniffers should listen now (no kink shame)!
Olympic champions Blair Tuke and Peter Burling have been announced in the New Zealand sailing team to defend their title at the Tokyo Olympics. The duo won their sixth 49er world title in Geelong last month, just two months after claiming title number five in Auckland. They will be joined in Tokyo by Rio 49erFX silver medalists Alex Maloney and Molly Meech, Laser bronze medalist Sam Meech and Olympic newcomers Erica Dawson and Micah Wilkinson in the Nacra 17 class."It's certainly a pretty special morning. I think anytime you get announced to represent your country at the Olympic Games is really special. We'll take a moment to reflect and then pretty quickly we'll shift into preparing for Tokyo," Tuke said.
Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have capped off day three of the 49er World Championship in Auckland in typical fashion. The Olympic champions are second after the final day of qualifying, a point behind Germany.Oscar Gunn and Logan Dunning Beck are sixth.Nacra 17 sailors Olivia Mackay and Jason SaThe scorecard doesn't always tell the full story but it shows Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in a strong position after the second day of the Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in Auckland. The pair banked two thirds, a first and an eighth in their four races to jump up from 11th to second in the 49er class, only one point behind Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl of Austria. But the four-time world champions and defending Olympic champions had to claw their way back into a couple of races in sometimes treacherously shifty conditions. The breeze built around the middle of the day, climbing to about 15 knots, but died off completely in the late afternoon as the last 49er race was concluding. Some boats were almost pushed back over the finish as they limped to the line."It was definitely a really tricky day out there," Burling admitted. "We had a fair share of either going backwards or forwards in races at times but we are pretty happy to walk away with the scorecard we did. It could always have been a bit better but it could also have been worse. All in all with how tricky it was, we were pretty happy."Logan Dunning Beck and Oscar Gunn were also pretty satisfied after winning two of their races which helped them climb from 33rd to seventh overall. With one more day of qualifying before the top third move into gold fleet, the priority is to post consistently good scores, especially as there are a gaggle of teams within striking distance of the leaders."We survived the day," Gunn said. "It's just about not throwing it away, really. A lot of people screwed it up today and yesterday so there are a few good guys who aren't in contention any more."We tried really hard to throw it away but we haven't yet so we will keep on chipping away and get some more good scores on the board."Alex Maloney and Molly Meech did mostly that in their first day of racing at these world championships and sit fourth in the 49erFX fleet after four races. They posted two top-three results across their four races and had two other middling scores on a day when some of the favourites struggled.Americans Paris Henken and Anna Tobias grabbed an early lead ahead of Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen of Denmark with Singapore's Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low third."I thought we did a lot of things well but we also made some mistakes that are easy to see in hindsight," Maloney said. The top four teams in the Nacra 17 did a really good job of that in their four races and only one point separates the quartet. Great Britain's John Gimson and Anna Burnet hold a slim lead over compatriots Ben Saxton and Nicola Boniface with Riley Gibbs and Anna Weis of the United States third.Gemma Jones and Josh Porebski were the best of the Kiwis in 16th. Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson are 17th and Liv Mackay and Jason Saunders 20th on a congested leaderboard that shows only 21 points between the top 20 teams. There's still a long way to go in these world championships, which finish on Sunday, and it will be something of a war of attrition. The 49ers, in particular, have already had two long days, but Burling and Tuke were relishing the battle ahead."It's what you train for, isn't it?" Burling said. And those two know better than any what it takes to win. unders have had a win and a third to improve to 11th overall after six races.
