What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Anuja Varghese. Anuja is a writer whose debut book, the short-story collection Chrysalis, was published by House of Anansi Press in 2023. That book won the Writers Trust of Canada Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ2S+ Emerging Writers, the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction, and the Hamilton Literary Award for Fiction. It was also nominated for a Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize and the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction. Quill & Quire said that “every piece in Chrysalis is as subtle and punchy as the eponymous final story. Varghese's women are like her words: brutal, elegant, and resonant." Anuja and I talk about Hamilton, Ontario's weirdly tight-knit literary scene, about the manuscript for Chrysalis initially meeting with only rejection and silence from publishers, and about dealing with audiences and readers who have trouble with some of the more graphic material in that book. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

How often do we take for granted the power of understanding every word we hear or read? This week, I'm chatting with Anuja Dhawan from Dübverse to dive into how AI is making the world a more inclusive place through content accessibility. It's not just about reaching more people; it's about truly connecting with them, no matter where they are in the world. For many of us, navigating content in English is a breeze, but imagine hitting a wall of text in a language you barely understand. This is the daily reality for countless individuals, impacting their work and their ability to engage with content that matters. In the past, bridging this gap meant pouring endless hours and significant resources into translations, often with mixed results. Now, AI is shifting the landscape, making it simpler and more efficient to bring content to everyone, in a language they can understand. This episode is more than a discussion; it's a practical look at how we're moving forward, breaking down barriers and making sure that when it comes to content, no one is left behind. So join us as we map out this journey towards a more inclusive world of content, powered by AI. There are certain events that punctuate a person's life, and one can't help but think of life as “before” and “after”. We might think of life “before having kids” and “after having kids”. Or “before the pandemic” versus “after the world shut down”. Anuja Martinez (née Mehta) has her life “before brain aneurysm” and “after brain aneurysm”.  At the age of 29, Anuja finally had th answer to why she would get debilitating headaches, light flashes, and tunnel vision, but the answer was terrifying. Finally a doctor listened to her and ordered an MRI, which revealed a fusiform brain aneurysm. She and her family, along with the best doctors in the world, chose a less mainstream surgery to repair the aneurysm, the surgery was successful, and Anuja is living a full and wonderful life in her “after”. But the story never ends there. To kick off our Season 5 “Physical Disability & Challenges: Seen & Unseen”, Anuja shares her journey of facing her mortality in her 20s, the consequences of not looking like she had brain surgery, and how she uses her experience to address systemic problems in the healthcare system now. A fun bonus for us: Anuja is our cousin! She is passionate, compassionate and truly lovely. You will hear her high highs and low lows in our conversation. But overall, you'll hear the drive to use her “after a brain aneurysm” life to impact change and be a force for good.

Do transformations need to be life changing? Sometimes when we talk about transformation, we just think about the end goal, the finish line. We think transformations needs to be a huge change, but in reality, nothing is instant. It is always a process, and a process that follows our own timing. Our next guest is a baker based in the UK. With her busy schedule and daily hustle, she uses travelling as her way to unwind and relax after a stressful stretch. I'm sure many of us can relate to this. Seeing different places do help in getting our minds off our work and stress. For Anuja @anujavakil, however , more than the relaxation, she uses her time in travelling as a mediation. This activity refuels her with positive vibes which she uses as a motivation to power through in running her bakery business. Besides that, by consistently exposing herself to local bakeries, she continuously improves her skills in baking-- applying new learnings and technologies to her own bakery-- all contributing to the success of Anuja's Bakehouse. This way, every time she travels, she comes back a renewed and better baker/ business woman. Join me as we hear more of Anuja's perspective in travelling. How is she able to use travelling as a source of atomic transformations rather than just merely a form of escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life?

In other words, the perception of HR as a field grew and the mindset towards it changed. Anuja explains how, as a newcomer, one should not rush into proving a point. Instead, they should focus on understanding the business and the industry. The world of networking is expanding. The older perception of networking was to organize meetings and pass out information. However, this concept has changed. She also talks about the importance of influencers within a company- someone people go to for advice or getting a job done. This makes the job more convenient.Anuja explains two ways to find these influencers within the company. They can reach out to ODA to find and approach influencers through data and software. The second way is to observe the employees and analyse their strengths. That's how they can find a go-to person of the company.Important takeaways from Organization Development for expanding organizations:After a big break, a new start-up undergoes a lot of changes, most commonly, new hires from different backgrounds. To ensure good outcomes, the founders need to decide on the structure, hierarchy, and talent. They need to develop policies and roll them out. However, founders can't manage all of this themselves. Therefore, HR professionals come to the role and gives a strong finish to this rough framework. But they need to be aware of what is expected from and by the company. Analyzing the business strategies and the competition, the need to bring people from different teams together and create organizational practices. Is constant change within the organization a concern for HR?Anuja talks about technology specifically here. Technology is important for the growth and development of a company. It can keep the company at par with the industrial standards. Strong communication for explaining the significance of technology can make people understand its relevance. Technology pushes people to do better and keep reskilling themselves.Designing L&D programs according to the world/industry changes:Anuja says that organizations need to design learning programs according to the situation they are in. She shares her own experience of conducting insightful sessions on managing bias, improving self-awareness, and engagement. New technologies can help make such sessions happen easily. However, the only challenge that can persist is the lack of human dynamics because of the remote working space. Technology can't replace human elements.
