Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber Brooks knows the immense pressure of elite gymnastics—where fear-based coaching, emotional suppression, and relentless expectations shape young athletes. In this episode, she opens up about the resilience it took to unlearn those survival tactics and how retiring at just 18 forced her to redefine her identity beyond competition. Now the head coach at the University of Arkansas, Jordyn is reshaping gymnastics culture, creating a healthier environment where athletes can thrive without sacrificing their well-being. She shares her journey of healing from body image struggles, finding purpose in coaching, and preparing for motherhood. Jordyn also reflects on her experience on Special Forces, where she reached her mental and physical limits and made the powerful decision to step away for her mental health—proving that true strength lies in self-awareness, boundaries, and rewriting the rules for the next generation.(00:00:00) Introductions(00:03:34) Redefining Success in Sports: Building Resilience & Healthy Mindsets(00:13:05) Jordyn's Olympic Journey & Navigating Life After Retirement(00:25:08) Healing Her Relationship with Food & Preparing for MotherhoodClick here for full show notesGuest Info:• Instagram: @jordyn_wieberResources:• Follow Karena Dawn on Instagram: @karenadawn• Follow The Big Silence on Instagram: @The.Big.Silence• Subscribe: The Big Silence YouTube Channel• Therapy For All: Resources for those in need• Thank you to our partners! What if the toughest battles aren't fought in stadiums, but in the shadows of a broken childhood? In this profoundly moving episode, Fatima Whitbread shares a story that goes far beyond athletic triumph—it's one of survival, courage, and an unyielding spirit. Born into abandonment and forced to navigate the brutal realities of the care system, Fatima's early years were a battle against neglect, trauma, and profound loneliness. But from the ashes of her childhood emerged something remarkable: an iron will and a resilience that would not be crushed.Fatima opens up about the inner demons she faced, the darkness that nearly consumed her, and the life-changing influence of two incredible women—Auntie Ray and, later, Margaret Whitbread—who gave her the family she never knew. This isn't just a sports story; it's a testament to the power of the human spirit. It's about how, when pushed to the edge, we can rise not only for ourselves but for those generations who follow. From setting world records to standing on countless podiums and becoming a world champion, Fatima reflects on her greatest battles, which were not fought on the athletic field but within herself and traumas faced. Today, through her advocacy, she's using her platform to champion the rights of children in the care system—children, like her, who deserve a chance to rewrite their own stories.Timestamps:00:00 – Where It All Began01:28 – Life Beyond Sport02:52 – Inside the Children's Homes05:48 – The Power of Love09:42 – Confronting Trauma15:47 – Discovering Javelin21:11 – Becoming a Whitbread23:30 – Campaigning for Change29:16 – Early Training29:43 – Breaking Barriers30:26 – World Records & Olympic Dreams31:09 – The Weight of Triumph31:47 – Facing Mental Health Challenges33:48 – Navigating the Darkest Moments34:34 – The Pressure of Media & Writing Her Story39:07 – The Olympic Journey44:45 – Making Her Voice Count45:04 – From Athlete to TV Star51:43 – Legacy56:46 – Final ThoughtsThis isn't just a story of sporting success—it's an exploration of what it means to persevere, to push through adversity, and to transform suffering into strength. Fatima's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and her insights into overcoming trauma and turning pain into purpose will resonate long after the episode ends.If you want to witness the real person behind the medals, watch the full conversation on YouTube. In this episode of BFR Radio, it is a solid discussion on the use of BFR for tendon injuries.   After the previous episode reviewing an excellent article on the many ways to incorporate BFR into an ACL post-surgery rehab program, this episode's topic centres around the use of BFR in the rehabilitation of a distal biceps brachii tendon rupture, showcasing a weightlifter's case study. Before we get into the podcast, I'll also give you an update with an athlete that I coach on a recent hamstring (tendon) injury that he unfortunately sustained. Although this injury hasn't been great, the rehab process has been fascinating and I give an update of some of the progress we've made in a quick time period. Back to the main focus of the podcast, this episode is a case study of a weightlifter who used BFR to assist in an accelerated rehab program post-surgery. The discussion on the use of BFR for Key topics include the anatomy of the bicep, the typical causes and an overview of the 15-week accelerated BFR rehab program. As always, I try to provide addition insight and offer a few additional ways to incorporate BFR to enhance this rehab process.   If you're interested in me putting together an episode around Cedric's hamstring rehab or even a live Q&A let me know.   00:00 Introduction and Previous Episode Recap 00:57 Cedric Dubler's Olympic Journey and Hamstring Injury 03:44 Today's Topic: BFR and Bicep Ruptures 04:36 Understanding Distal Biceps Brachii Tendon Ruptures 07:03 Post-Surgery Rehabilitation and BFR Training 07:35 Case Study: Rehabilitation Program 15:05 Mechanisms and Benefits of BFR Training 17:44 Additional Rehabilitation Strategies   If you're looking at purchasing your own set of BFR cuffs visit www.thebfr.co

In this episode, Anthony speaks to Tom Bosworth, MBE, race walker and Olympian, who shares his inspiring journey of overcoming setbacks and adversity in his athletic career. Tom opens up about his struggles, including a heartbreaking disqualification at the World Championships in London 2017, where he felt he let down his family, friends, and fans. In today's episode, Tom delves into the mental challenges faced by athletes, the pressure of competition, and the impact of setbacks on personal relationships. Despite the tough times, Tom's resilience shines through as he reflects on his achievements, including breaking world records and winning medals.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Tom Bosworth, a race walker, experienced a significant setback at the 2017 World Championships in London when he was disqualified while leading the race due to technical faults in his walking technique. The pressure and expectations from fans, media, and himself led to a mental struggle for Tom, causing him to doubt his abilities and feel like he had let down many people. Following the disappointment, Tom struggled with motivation and turned to partying, feeling like he wasn't good enough and questioning his commitment to the sport. The support and understanding from his partner, Harry, helped Tom refocus and regain his determination, leading to a successful performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where he set a British record. Tom's journey highlights the importance of mental resilience, self-belief, and the impact of setbacks on an athlete's mindset and performance. BEST MOMENTS "I was in pretty good shape. But after Rio, I realized I want to go and become world champion, or at least get on the podium, and these sorts of things over the next few years." "I felt like I had to be in first. I had to not let any of these people down. And then, so in race walking, there's obviously the two rules to make sure that you are walking, not running." "I got three red cards, which means you get disqualified. So I'd clear loss of contact with the ground because I was doing these stupid spurring faster than slower, faster than slower." "It was probably one of the few times that I've been recognized outside the sport after that was, 'oh, you got disqualified on the Mall in London.' I was like, yes, thanks very much." HOST BIO Olympic medal-winning boxer, Anthony Ogogo, teetered on the brink of a world title before a career-ending eye injury left him mostly blind in one eye. Battling years of depression, he reinvented himself as a professional wrestler with All Elite Wrestling in America. Anthony holds an impressive record of 10 British boxing titles, in addition to being the junior world and junior Olympic champion. Beyond sports, he's a renowned international motivational speaker, gracing prestigious venues like Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street. Anthony's entrepreneurial spirit led him to create Ogogo Fitness, a fitness app. Now, as a podcast host, he shares his incredible journey and the wisdom he's gleaned from life's trials. Join him in exploring the resilience that has defined his life, and the inspirational stories of others who have risen above challenges to find success and happiness. Instagram - @anthonyogogo

Mandy Bujold, an 11-time national champion and two-time Canadian Olympic boxer, shares her journey in both the construction industry and the world of boxing with host Lisa Laronde. Reflecting on her experiences, she candidly discusses the hurdles encountered as a female boxer and the strides made in advancing women's boxing, recounting her road to the Olympics, which included a legal battle against the world's largest sports organization, the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It was single-handedly the most important fight of her career, in which she waged to compete post-motherhood, underscoring the imperative for gender equality in sports and beyond. Not content with personal achievements alone, Mandy initiated the 'Champions for Charity' program, dedicated to raising funds for McMaster Children's Hospital. Mandy exemplifies resilience and advocacy in both her professional and athletic pursuits, leading to a change in the landscape of women's sports for years to come.  Mandy Bujold is one of the most decorated Canadian Olympic boxers in history. Included amongst her many achievements are 11 Canadian National Championships, 3 Continental Championships, a Gold medal at the first Pan American Games and a Bronze medal at the first Commonwealth Games that included women's boxing. Mandy is also the first Canadian female boxer to represent Canada at two Olympic Games. In the lead-up to Tokyo Mandy's won a precedent-setting case against the IOC, in a fight for gender equity, that will help change the landscape of women's sports for years to come. She recently joined the Grand Valley Construction Association as their Industry and Community Partnerships Manager. She will spend her time fostering community, championing health and safety, and advancing women in construction and trades. Topics Gender equality remains paramount across all sectors, from construction to sports. Challenges should be reframed as chances for personal growth and learning, rather than as impediments. Building a solid support network is essential for overcoming obstacles effectively. Celebrating small victories and embracing the journey are crucial for continuous personal and professional development.
