Send us a textIn 1900, 20 miles off the coast, one of Scotland's greatest mysteries unfolded on the Flannan Isles. Its lighthouse, finished just one year earlier, failed to turn on. For days it remained dark, and when a ship came to relieve the island's keepers, they found the island deserted. All three lighthouse keepers had vanished into thin air, leaving little to no clues. Was it a rogue wave? Was it a murder suicide? Maybe a sea monster or UFO? Anything is possible. We'll dig into the conditions of their quarters and read entries from their logbook to determine what really happened on that cold December day. Happy haunting! Get in touch! Just before the turn of the 20th century, a brand new lighthouse sitting atop the island known as Eilean Mor, off the west coast of Scotland, would endure it's rite of passage and have it's light first lit on December 7th, 1899. Blanketed in misfortune from decades past, Eilean Mor, along with it's fellow islands known collectively as the Flannan Isles, located the Outer Hebrides, is no stranger to shipwrecks and to the loss of sailors. To combat the issue of lost goods and the seafaring death toll continuously rising just like the waves of the world's unforgiving seas, a lighthouse was built... but it wouldn't take long for this area to reel back in it's feeling of overwhelming despair as just a little over a year, on December 26th, 1900, three lighthouse keepers stationed on Eilean Mor would never be seen, or heard from, again. In one of the most intriguing disappearance cases of all time, you'll quickly find that no theory works in it's entirety. Nothing adds up completely in order to hand you a foolproof solution. Your mind will be pulled in every direction while trying to gather ideas on what caused these three experienced lighthouse keepers to vanish without a trace over a century ago. Day 11 of 12 days of missing person cases in December. On the 15th of December 1900, the ship Fairwind was passing by the Flannan Isles, a set of 7 islands in the outer hebrides in Scotland. There was a violent storm that night and the waters were choppy. The crew were shocked to see that the light was out at the Flannan Isle lighthouse located on the biggest island called Eilean Mor and there was nobody helping them to navigate the dangerous waters. A relief keeper went out on the 26th of December to swap over and give the 3 keepers on the lighthouse some more provisions. Relief Keeper Joseph Moore was shocked to the find the lighthouse deserted and the 3 keepers disappeared without a trace. Lighthouses and the lives of the men who tended the lamp to keep others safe have captured the imagination of successive generations. Stories are told of the hardships, particularly in war time, and of the lost cargoes and wreckage they would encounter. The most mysterious story of all is set in December 1900 when three keepers disappeared from the isolated Eilean Mor Lighthouse on the Flannan Isles. In spite of many theories no trace of the keepers has ever been found. A tragic event that encapsulates the hardship and danger associated with keeping the light burning.

What happened to the lighthouse keeps on the Flannan Isles?
How do you imagine a lighthouse keeper's job? Probably like an introvert's paradise: you're alone on a rock in the middle of the sea, looking out at the raging waves and keeping the light on. But lack of people around has its downside too: no one will know if something happens to you. And that was exactly the case with the keepers of the Flannan Isles Lighthouse… It was a fine and calm day on December 15, 1900. In such weather conditions, lighthouses aren't crucial for the safety of passing ships. But still, it was unusual for the Archtor, a steamer passing by the Flannan Isles on its way from Philadelphia, to notice that the lighthouse on Eilean Mor was not operational. Just one year after its commission, the crew of the Flannan Isles lighthouse went missing without a trace. Join us as we try to discover what happened that fateful December. Was it a horrific tale of man versus nature? Or a sort of freezing Scottish Ferris Bueller? Tune in and find out.
In December 1900, a boat called Hesperus set sail for the island of Eilean Mor, one of the seven islets (also known as the “Seven Hunters”) of the Flannan Isles off the coast of northwestern Scotland. Captain James Harvey was tasked with delivering a relief lighthouse keeper as part of a regular rotation. The journey was delayed a few days by bad weather, and when Harvey and his crew finally arrived, it was clear that something was awry. None of the normal preparations at the landing dock had been made, the flagstaff was bare, and none of the keepers came to greet the Hesperus. The keepers, as it turned out, weren’t on the island at all. All three of them had vanished. This video is sponsored by PodDecks: Use Code TCNS for 10% off. https://powered-by-pod-decks.peachs.co/a/lawrence-leaseFollow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/truecrimensLike Us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/truecrimeneversleepspodcastSupport Us By Buying Us a Coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/tcnsSOURCEShttps://web.archive.org/web/20070810101529/http://www.lighthousemuseum.org.uk/history/FlannanIslesdocuments.htmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unexplained_Fileshttps://sentinel63.wordpress.com/2016/06/10/when-three-isnt-a-crowd-the-mystery-of-eilean-mor/

The Flannan Isles, sometimes referred to as the 7 Hunters, are a tiny group of islands on the outside of the Outer Hebrides – a string of islands in the North of Scotland. Uninhabited, hilly and rocky, covered only by grass … people generally had little to do with these islands. For centuries Shepherds would use the islands to store sheep away from poachers. They themselves never stayed overnight – folklore warned of malevolent spirits on the islands. The lighthouse keepers were another case entirely. The lighthouse on the rock-island of Eilean Mòr in the Flannan Isles is one of the most isolated places on earth. In December 1900, a relief boat arrived with supplies and support for the keepers, but the only sign of life was three blackbirds, sitting on the roof of the living quarters, quietly staring. The three keepers had disappeared into thin air. To this day, this unsolved case puzzles armchair sleuths all over the world. The Flannan Isles Lighthouse is a lighthouse near the highest point on Eilean Mòr, off the west coast of mainland Scotland... and while it is a beautiful little island, it is best known for the mysterious disappearance of its keepers in 1900. The first record that something was wrong on Flannan Isles was when the steamer Archtor was on a trip from Philadelphia to Leith on December 15th, 1900 . The ship noted in the log that the light was "not operational in poor weather conditions." On December 26th, a relief team was sent to the lighthouse, and that's when they noticed some really weird things. Did the keepers just get caught in a freak storm or was there something more at play... Stay safe out there. A lighthouse represents safety and hope. It's a place where the light is never supposed to go out. So, when the light DID go out and the lighthouse keepers were nowhere to be found, instead of safety and hope, the island lived up to its reputation of danger and mystery.

Kraken Cove - The Podcast That Shines a Beacon onto The Bizarre!
In this special episode, Kraken Cove dives deep into the mystery that baffles investigators to this day - The Missing Lighthouse Keepers of the Eilean Mor. In 1900, three lighthouse keepers vanished from the lighthouse situated on the largest Islan in the Flannan Isles, Eilean Mor. No trace of them was ever found. In episode 1 we look at the story - in episode 2 we'll go through the many theories and see if we can finally solve this riddle, 120 years after it happened!
There is no shortage of strange tales and sinister stories when it comes to the bleak and dreary locations of lighthouses. Maine’s infamous Seguin lighthouse for instance, a lighthouse keeper, allegedly driven to madness by his wife’s piano playing, brutally murdered her with an axe before committing suicide. The Pensacola lighthouse in Florida, it was the lighthouse keeper's wife who murdered her husband, stabbing him to death. Before the advent of automated lighthouses, the men and women who tended these buildings lived in near total isolation for long periods of time. Weathering terrifying storms on some of the most inhospitable terrain, lighthouse keepers had the serious duty of keeping ships and their crews from sailing into dangerous waters. The isolation coupled with the heavy responsibility could, it seems, often lead some lighthouse keepers down their own very dark paths of madness, death, and, even sometimes, disappearance. What happened to three men who vanished while attending the lighthouse on a barren island of rock off the west coast of Scotland? What details of their disappearance have kept the mystery alive for so long? There will be tales of ghosts, murder, supernatural beings and unexplained mysteries. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, relax and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... But before we get started, as always, we will be playing our drinking game. Remember, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. I’m going to leave things open and say our story today has mystery and the sea... so pick your poison based on this. Now for the game part... every time I say lighthouse that will be a single shot and every time I say Hebrides, that’s a double shot. Now that we have the business end out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and the mysterious disappearance of the Eilean Mor lighthouse Keepers. The Scottish Hebrides is a craggy and foreboding archipelago. Often swathed in mist, its jagged rock formations erupt from the North Sea like the fangs of some aquatic leviathan. But on clear days the water becomes aqua blue, and the islands, illuminated in sunlight, appear idyllic. Dec. 26, 1900, was one such day, according to Captain James Harvey, who had been sent to the Flannan Isles to provide some much-needed relief to the three lighthouse keepers on the island of Eilean Mor. Although uninhabited, the island has always sparked people’s interest. It is named after St. Flannen, a 6th century Irish Bishop who later became a saint, who built a chapel on the island and for centuries shepherds used to bring over sheep to the island to graze but would never stay the night, fearful of the spirits believed to haunt such a remote spot. Captain James Harvey was in charge of the ship which was also carrying Joseph Moore, a replacement lifehouse keeper. As the ship reached the landing platform, Captain Harvey was surprised when no one was waiting for their arrival. He blew his horn and sent up a warning flare to attract attention. There was no response.
Collin explains the mysterious disappearances of the three Flannan Isles lighthouse keepers. In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers went missing. There were no signs of foul play as everything was kept in order and there were no signs of what happened or where they went. Flannan Isles Part 2 is delayed. This is why.
In 1899, construction on the Flannan Isles lighthouse was completed, perched atop Eilean Mòr, one of the highest points in the Outer Hebrides off the western coast of Scotland. It would soon experience its first tragedy and an enduring mystery. For several days, it's light could not be seen and on December 15, 1900, the ship Archtor documented this concern in its log while heading to port in Leith. However, 11 days would pass before the lighthouse tending ship Hesperus would be able to dock at Eilean Mòr due to foul weather, for which the area is well-known. What they discovered, or rather, didn't discover, would lead to one of the biggest mysteries of this enchanted region. Serious storm damage was evident on the island, but nothing seemed amiss inside the lighthouse itself except for the fact that the three lighthouse keepers had vanished and would never be seen again. Then, the world of archaeology was electrified last year by the news that Tutankhamun’s tomb could contain hidden chambers possibly containing the remains and riches of Queen Nefertiti. In 1900 three lighthouse keepers vanished from a remote, featureless island in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The lighthouse was in good order and the log showed no sign of trouble, but no trace of the keepers has ever been found. In this episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore the conundrum of the men's disappearance -- a classic mystery of sea lore. We'll also ponder the whereabouts of Robert Louis Stevenson's birthday, admire Esaw Wood's quest for a wood saw that would saw wood, and wonder why drinking a glass of water might necessitate a call to the auto club. Here's the deed: Vailima, June 19, 1891. I, Robert Louis Stevenson, Advocate of the Scots Bar, author of The Master of Ballantrae and Moral Emblems, stuck civil engineer, sole owner and patentee of the Palace and Plantation known as Vailima in the island of Upolu, Samoa, a British Subject, being in sound mind, and pretty well, I thank you, in body: In consideration that Miss Annie H. Ide, daughter of H.C. Ide, in the town of Saint Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, in the state of Vermont, United States of America, was born, out of all reason, upon Christmas Day, and is therefore out of all justice denied the consolation and profit of a proper birthday; And considering that I, the said Robert Louis Stevenson, have attained an age when O, we never mention it, and that I have now no further use for a birthday of any description; ... And in consideration that I have met H.C. Ide, the father of the said Annie H. Ide, and found him about as white a land commissioner as I require: Have transferred, and do hereby transfer, to the said Annie H. Ide, all and whole my rights and privileges in the thirteenth day of November, formerly my birthday, now, hereby, and henceforth, the birthday of the said Annie H. Ide, to have, hold, exercise, and enjoy the same in the customary manner, by the sporting of fine raiment, eating of rich meats, and receipt of gifts, compliments, and copies of verse, according to the manner of our ancestors; And I direct the said Annie H. Ide to add to the said name of Annie H. Ide the name Louisa — at least in private; and I charge her to use my said birthday with moderation and humanity, et tamquam bona filia familia, the said birthday not being so young as it once was, and having carried me in a very satisfactory manner since I can remember; And in case the said Annie H. Ide shall neglect or contravene either of the above conditions, I hereby revoke the donation and transfer my rights in the said birthday to the President of the United States of America for the time being: In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of June in the year of grace eighteen hundred and ninety-one. Robert Louis Stevenson. Witness, Lloyd Osbourne, Witness, Harold Watts. To Ide Stevenson wrote, "Herewith please find the Document, which I trust will prove sufficient in law. It seems to me very attractive in its eclecticism; Scots, English, and Roman law phrases are all indifferently introduced, and a quotation from the works of Haynes Bailey can hardly fail to attract the indulgence of the Bench." A bizarre coincidence: Just before we recorded this episode I discovered that Robert Louis Stevenson's cousin, David Alan Stevenson, designed the Flannan Isles lighthouse! I'd had no inkling of this in planning or writing the episode; the two stories are set literally a world apart. "The Story of Esaw Wood," by W.E. Southwick, from Carolyn Wells' 1918 anthology Such Nonsense!: Esaw Wood sawed wood. Esaw Wood would saw wood! All the wood Esaw Wood saw Esaw Wood would saw. In other words, all the wood Esaw saw to saw Esaw sought to saw. Oh, the wood Wood would saw! And oh, the wood-saw with which Wood would saw wood. But one day Wood’s wood-saw would saw no wood, and thus the wood Wood sawed was not the wood Wood would saw if Wood’s wood-saw would saw wood. Now, Wood would saw wood with a wood-saw that would saw wood, so Esaw sought a saw that would saw wood. One day Esaw saw a saw saw wood as no other wood-saw Wood saw would saw wood. In fact, of all the wood-saws Wood ever saw saw wood Wood never saw a wood-saw that would saw wood as the wood-saw Wood saw saw wood would saw wood, and I never saw a wood-saw that would saw as the wood-saw Wood saw would saw until I saw Esaw Wood saw wood with the wood-saw Wood saw saw wood. Now Wood saws wood with the wood-saw Wood saw saw wood. Oh, the wood the wood-saw Wood saw would saw! Oh, the wood Wood’s woodshed would shed when Wood would saw wood with the wood-saw Wood saw saw wood! Finally, no man may ever know how much wood the wood-saw Wood saw would saw, if the wood-saw Wood saw would saw all the wood the wood-saw Wood saw would saw.
