We've all heard of our inner child, right? That wounded inner child who is still reckoning with incidents occurring in our childhood. But, have you ever heard of your “outer child”? Tell me if this sounds familiar: You are going back home to visit your family and the minute you get around your parents, it's like you're 16 all over again. You're angsty, everything is unfair, and you just want to burn incense and listen to music, yet hanging out with your fam makes you want to lash out and yell and scream and maybe break a lava lamp. And suddenly all of the coping mechanisms you've learned in decades of therapy are out the window. This, my friend, is your Outer Child. It's a way in which we regress to earlier versions of ourselves and act out from that place when surrounded by triggering people. And, let's face it, it's often our family. In this week's episode, I dial up Alexa Rae Schiefer, Trauma Coach and former mental health clinician, to ask her some heavy-hitting questions around the trauma we incur from our primary caregivers. We dig into the concept of “Parentification Trauma”, the inner and outer child, what trauma responses tend to look like, and what the hell a Window of Tolerance is and why we should be aware of it. Alexa Rae and I also discuss what it means to self-soothe and how that process can vary depending on what trauma you are up against. We chat about processing the trauma of our childhoods and how, more often than not, we are trying to pretend we don't have any trauma. Yeah, ok. How's that working out? We even talk about what-the-hell trauma even is. If you know you've got a wound, or two, or twenty, to process from your childhood, be sure to grab a pen and paper. This is a good one. This pod explores: The definition of trauma and how we all pretty much have it Understanding Parentification Trauma and how that influences your behavior later on in life What common trauma responses look like and what you can do about them Understanding Abandonment Wounds and how they show up in our lives _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks with Alexa Rae Schiefer a Self-Love Guru and Trauma Coach & Women's Authenticity Healer. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/Alexa-Rae-Schiefer Highlights from today's episode include: Alexa Rae Schiefer 08:44 Living with a mental illness is like living in the bottom of a very deep, dark scene, you're always trying to find your way to the surface. And, this person said, you know, I wish that the healthcare system was the type of system where they would jump out of a boat, swim to the bottom of the sea, grab your hand and guide you up to the surface. He said, unfortunately, it's not that way they sit in the boat, they feed you lures like medication to superficially bring you to the surface. So, you have no idea how you got there, it won't last forever, because once you let go of that, you will go back down to the bottom. Alexa Rae Schiefer So many people think that that's the way it is, I'm stuck, you know, I take medication for anxiety, and that's just you know, what I have to do, but there's a totally different world out there, that I have used my own life to have my own self healer, to really see like, I can change and be whoever I want on this planet. It just takes a bit of work to get there in especially in the society that we live in today, you know. Alexa Rae Schiefer 32:46 I think I just want every woman or every person listening to this just to remember that you deserve to have a life that you love, like you deserve to...you're worthy of that and that you all have what's inside of you to actually create that and that's the biggest message I want anyone to hear in this world. ABOUT ALEXA RAE SCHIEFER Alexa Rae (she/her) is known online as the “Authenticity Healer” and woman who decided to shake up the healing game in mental health. She is living her purpose on earth to help as many women as possible connect to their authentic selves. She is renowned for her ability to deeply connect with women, help them see their worth, and for being a down-to-earth healer. A client once said, “When Alexa cares about you, you're a lucky and blessed person. Just alone hearing the genuine hurt in her voice and the genuine expression on her face and in her words of how connected she is that you feel a certain way. I don't know how to describe it.. but it is not something I have experienced many times in my life. Words describing it could not really begin to explain it. She is intuitive. She is supportive. She is a role model. She is love.” In her former life, Alexa Rae was a professional mental health clinician who worked in a variety of areas - acute mental health, trauma, forensics, eating disorders, adolescents, education, and more. In March 2020, Randy contracted COVID-19 and spent six weeks in the hospital. Three and a half weeks were spent in a medically induced coma on a ventilator, on dialysis, and finally on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine. As Randy's heart and organs began to fail, he was given a 3% chance of survival. While in the coma, Randy experienced three near-death experiences. He traveled twice through a dark tunnel. His first trip exited into a beautiful building resembling a great hall and his second into a magnificent city. He was privileged with the ability to see several deceased relatives and was honored when an unknown deceased veteran chose him to deliver a message to his granddaughter. Randy was able to validate this experience (evidence!) by locating the granddaughter and passing her grandfather's message to her (54:00). These experiences have inspired in Randy a love for Jesus and for the Bible. "God has a plan. He is real. There is a heaven and it's beautiful." -Randy Schiefer "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Jesus's words from John 14:1-4 NIV Randy holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and a Master of Forensics Science Degree. He spent 20 years in the United States Air Force as a Security Policeman and as a Special Agent in the Office of Special Investigations. He retired in 1992. From the Air Force Randy started teaching at the collegiate level, entering as an adjunct instructor and working his way to Department Chair and finally as the college campus Director. He retired (again) in 2014 and moved to Florida in 2015. Randy married his high school sweetheart in 1972. They have three marvelous daughters, two grandchildren, and a third due in August. Randy's book "To the Veil and Back, Surviving COVID-19" is coming soon! Check it out for more detail as he continues to process and share his journey and revelation.
