It was not my intention for this podcast to be so focused on 70's Kirby, but I can't say I mind it, either.  Jason Levian, owner of Floating World Comics, sits down with me to talk about the first few issues of each of the four series that form the Fourth World, an ahead-of-it-time epic by one of comics all-time great storytellers. It exists at the epicenter of genius and madness, and you'll love hearing Jason's take on it.  Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes.  And here's the link to the show on Spotify. On today's episode, I talk to writer Steve Aylett. Born in Bromley, Steve is the author of over a dozen novels, comics and collections of short fiction. He started to get acclaim for his writing with his third novel Slaughtermatic, which was shortlisted for the 1998 Philip K. Dick Award. Slaughtermatic was part of his Beerlight series, and this, along with the Accomplice series, make up the bulk of his most well-known work, although one of his best works, Lint - a satirical, Zelig-like biography of a Philip K. Dick/Hunter S. Thompson/Ken Kesey pastiche - stands relatively alone. His latest comic, Hyperthick, will be released at the end of July by Floating World Comics. Night Hunters is a Floating World Comics independent comic book feature illustrated by Alexis Ziritt and written by Dave Baker. Dave Baker joins Jublar and Cami for a Q&A to discuss the cyber-future setting and characters of Night Hunters. Dave Baker breaks down how this comic book is his artistic protest for the culture movements that are taking place in the real world of today. Night Hunters takes place in a dystopian cyber modified future set in Venezuela 2057-2078. Cyber-mech modified super cops control the streets of Gran Caracas by establishing peace through the citizens' superior obedience, extreme police brutality, and only giving basic human rights to those who are or were former police officers. If you love bootleg 80s movie posters or if you're still waiting on your cyber-punk video game refund then this comic book is for you! Music credit to: Jeremy Blake - Power Up! (Theme song) Karl Casey @whitebataudio for the music tracks: Androids and Sentient Beings, Rain City, Hackers, Alien ruins, O-Ren

This week the Two Guys with PhDs focus a critical spotlight on the spring releases coming out from Alternative Comics and the other small presses that are part of its distribution co-operative, Floating World Comics, Hic + Hoc Productions, Study Group Comics, and Press Gang. This is a jam-packed episode and longer than usual, a discussion that covers eighteen different titles among the five indie presses. Before they jump directly into the comics, though, Derek has a brief conversation with Marc Arsenault, the publisher of Alternative Comics and one of the ringleaders of the co-operative. He asks Marc about the origins of the press, its relaunch in 2012, its distribution agreement with the other indie publishers, and what readers could anticipate coming out of Alternative Comics in the months to come. After that introductory interview, Andy W. and Derek begin discussing the individual titles some out this spring, and organizing their conversation by publisher. These books include: Alternative Comics Incomplete Works, by Dylan Horrocks The Sequential Artists Workshop Guide to Creating Professional Comic Strips, by Tom Hart From Now On, by Malachi Ward Compulsive Comics, by Eric Haven Chainmail Bikini: The Anthology of Women Gamers, edited by Hazel Newlevant Ohio Is for Sale, by Jon Allen Lou, by Melissa Mendes Floating World Comics Test Tube, by Carlos Gonzalez Scab County, by Carlos Gonzalez Winners, by Anna Ehrlemark Jonny Negron Selected Works 2012-2013, by Jonny Negron Bartkira: Nuclear Edition, edited by James Harvey and Alex Jaffe Video Tonfa, by Tim Goodyear Hic + Hoc Productions Why Would You Do That?, by Andrea Tsurumi Street Dawgz, by Lizz Lunny Study Group Comics Titan #1, #2, #3, by François Vigneault Vile #1, Tyler Landry Press Gang Sun Bakery #1, Corey Lewis As Andy and Derek mention in the show, this has been a spotlight episode they've been wanting to do for some time. The guys are truly excited to talk about the new releases coming out from Alternative Comics (and its co-op partners)...and not just this publisher's name is an inversion of the podcast title.
