Matthew 21:1–11, Isaiah 53:4-5, Colossians 2:12–17, 2 Corinthians 2:14–16, Revelation 19:11–21
The oracle of the word of the LORD is against the land of Hadrach and Damascus is its resting place. For the LORD has an eye on mankind and on all the tribes of Israel, and on Hamath also, which borders on it, Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise. Tyre has built herself a rampart and heaped up silver like dust, and fine gold like the mud of the streets. But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions and strike down her power on the sea, and she shall be devoured by fire. Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid; Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish; Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded. The king shall perish from Gaza; Ashkelon shall be uninhabited; a mixed people shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of Philistia. I will take away its blood from its mouth, and its abominations from between its teeth; it too shall be a remnant for our God; it shall be like a clan in Judah, and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites. Then I will encamp at my house as a guard, so that none shall march to and fro; no oppressor shall again march over them, for now I see with my own eyes. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold

How do you get out of a spiral of shame and guilt and try to make the world a better place?Today we meet Max Yeshaye Brumberg-Kraus and we're talking about the queer book that saved their life: The Once and Future King by T.H. White.Max studied classics and theatre at Beloit College, received their MA in Theology and the Arts from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. They are the author of The(y)ology: Mythopoetics for Queer/Trans Liberation with Punctum Press and the collection of poems Visions of Divine Love with AC Books, which brings together Julian of Norwich with Divine the Drag Queen. Their work explores memory, historiography, gender/sexuality, and myth through embodied practices.Terence Hanbury "Tim" White was an English writer. He is best known for his Arthurian novels, which were published together in 1958 as The Once and Future King. One of his best known is the first of the series, The Sword in the Stone, which was published as a stand-alone book in 1938. Despite leading a single and very private life, Sylvia Townsend Warner argued in her definitive 1967 biography of white that he was gay.The Once and Future King retells the saga of King Arthur, a fantasy classic as legendary as Excalibur and Camelot, and a poignant story of adventure, romance, and magic that has enchanted readers for generations.Connect with Maxwebsite: maxyeshaye.comfacebook: facebook.com/max.brumbergkrausinstagram: @cicadalamourFor ticket info for Incident at Peckerpah Ridge on March 21 and 22 head to: squirrelhausarts.com/eventsOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookBuy your own copy of The Once and Future King: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780441627400Buy The(y)ology: Mythopoetics for Queer/Trans Liberation: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781685710866Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Jacob Seay continues our sermon series, God's Story. With the theme, The Once and Future King and Kingdom.
This Sunday we'll be continuing our study in Micah and we will be reading chapter 5:1-5a.The prophecy in these verses points directly to Jesus and his birth in Bethlehem and paints a beautiful picture of hope and peace. Up to this point, many words have been given by God in desperation and frustration regarding how the Israelites had been ignoring God. The people, the kings, the rich, and even the religious leaders were determined to go their own way and they were cruel in how they treated the poor, widows, and immigrants.Verse 1 shows us what hardships are coming their way when God's protection is removed. They are like people in a submarine desperate to open the door underwater and God is no longer stopping them from doing so. The consequences of their actions will be catastrophic. However, God in his goodness refuses to let that be the end of the story for the Israelites. God in his goodness refuses to give up on us, even when we try to give up on Him. The prophecy we will read on Sunday points to something greater and something stronger. The prophecy points to a future king who is 2,000 years in our past. It points to a king who arrives in a small insignificant town like Bethlehem to rescue his broken people and set things right. We invite you to join us this Sunday at 10:00 AM as we study these verses together.Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.

Today we are joined by Dr. R.P. Oates, founder of INergy Wellness in Friday Harbor, Washington. R.P. is a multidisciplinary scientist who's previous career spans two decades of research experience across chemistry, toxicology, and biotechnology. Holding an MS in Organic Chemistry with a focus on photochemistry and a PhD in Toxicology focused on how physical forces in nature impact biological systems. At INergy Wellness, R.P. now offers personalized sessions of FDA-cleared full body red light therapy, Infra red sauna, and cold plunge for optimal cellular wellness designed to guide clients toward their own unique path to wellness on San Juan Island. For those curious about the book quote we discussed in the interview, here it is below!“The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn."TH White, from the book The Once and Future King
White published the four-part volume in 1938 and 1958--all in the shadow of WWII. If he only knew how well the chaos of that historical moment would mirror 2025! This 700-page novel is haunting, intelligent, absorbing and charming. NO NEED TO READ the book. Just treat yourself to Kimberly's wander through it now!

We took a look at a British tv series from the 1950s, dramatising the Arthurian story in a high-romance fashion. Believe it or not, it's pretty good! Starring William Russell–who later played “Ian” on Doctor Who–it's a fairly faithful rendering of the story, with Lancelot as an outsider who comes to Arthur's court, Gawain as his rival, a belligerent Kay, and a Merlin who is part magician, part con-man. Lancelot isn't just the best of knights here, he's also a champion of underdogs, defying the more hierarchical standards of Camelot–it's no surprise to find out that several of the writers for the show were Americans who were blacklisted during the Red Scare. Once again, the Arthurian world is used as a playground for utopian politics, not unlike Twain's Connecticut Yankee and T.H. White's Once and Future King. Starring William Russell, Cyril Smith, Ronald Leigh-Hunt, Robert Scroggins, and Jane Hylton. With various writers and directors depending on the episode. The Shepherd King - The Future King 1 Kings 2:1-4 Jared Osselaer | January 19, 2025
We're on a break at the moment, researching and writing our sixth series, but, to fill the gap, this is the first of six new compilation episodes containing a trio of stories from across our earlier series. We've entitled this episode Three Tales of Chivalry because, following on from our 25-part retelling of Gawain and the Green Knight, we imagined listeners might be jones-ing, for some shining armour and talking horses. As such, this episode contains three of our more knightly stories, including our second-lap Cornwall story, The Once and Future King; or The Mad Man's Dream, our second lap Northamptonshire story, Dionysia The Female Knight, and our live retelling of The Many of Adventures of Arundel the Horse, and His Blundering Knight, Sir Bevis of Hampton, as performed at The Chichester Festival last summer. We really hope you enjoy them, and will be back with a new compilation episode next Monday. Or, if you're a Patreon Supporter, on Thursday and Saturday with new episodes of the Three Ravens Film Club! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. When Macdonald's father passed away, she was devastated. An experienced falconer she'd never before been tempted to train a goshawk. But in her grief, she saw that the goshawk's fierce and feral temperament mirrored her own. Resolving to raise one of the creatures as a means to cope with her loss, MacDonald adopts Mabel and turns to the guidance of the Once and Future King author TH White's chronicle The Goshawk to begin her challenging endeavor. Projecting herself “in the hawk's wild mind to tame her” tested the limits of Helen's humanity and changed her life… Love this Zoo-notable? Grab the book! It's the Anime Minority Report season finale, and your favorite out-of-pocket hosts, Guerby and Jamie, are coming in HOT! They're breaking down the anime that carried 2024 on its back like Deku in a boss fight—and predicting the heavy hitters poised to dominate 2025 like a JJK domain expansion. Will they give "Peak Piece" its flowers? Is "Chainsaw Man" not coming back? And what wild picks will they crown as anime MVPs ? You'll laugh, you'll cry (mostly from laughing), and you'll definitely yell at your screen because their takes are as spicy as a fire-style jutsu. Whether you're here for the facts, the roasting, or just to hear how many tangents they can cram into one episode, you need to click play. Trust us—this is the energy you want to end the year with!
Scripture Text: 1 Chronicles 28:1-10; Matthew 1:1-17 The Rev. Dan Marotta
It's hard to know if F.H. Buckley is keen on Donald Trump. On the one hand, Buckley and his wife wrote a number of speeches for Trump in his 2016 campaign; on the other, Buckley publicly wrote Donald Trump off in 2022, arguing in the Wall Street Journal that Trump “can't win another presidential election”. What Buckley was explicitly calling for was Trumpism without Trump. So what, exactly, is “Trumpism”. In his new book, The Roots of Liberalism, Buckley lays out a kind of aristocratic version of liberalism based upon chivalry and kindness. It's Lord of the Rings meets Dickens and Hans Christian Andersen, with a bit of patrimonial welfare state thrown in to satisfy the Republican social conscience. Kind of interesting, I guess, for grown-ups with childishly atavistic notions of gentlemanly honor. But certainly no validation of Donald Trump himself, who is about as chivalrous or gentlemanly as Uriah Heep.F.H. BUCKLEY is a Foundation Professor at George Mason University's Scalia School of Law. He is a frequent media guest and has appeared on Morning Joe, CNN, The Rush Limbaugh Show, C‑SPAN, NPR, and numerous other outlets. Pop quizzes in school are dreaded because they reveal whether you're prepared. Similarly, the Bible tells us an ultimate "pop quiz" is coming: the return of Jesus, the King of kings. We can't afford to be unprepared. Luke 12:35-59 outlines how to be ready for His return: Be Alert: Like servants waiting for their master, we must stay vigilant because Jesus will return when we least expect it. Be Faithful: Jesus challenges us to be faithful stewards, ready for His return, and to avoid neglecting or abusing our responsibilities. Be Loyal: Our loyalty to Jesus must surpass even family ties. His message will divide, but we must choose Him. Be Prepared: Just as we anticipate weather changes, we must live in light of Jesus' return. It's essential to settle accounts with Him before it's too late. Takeaway: Live in Light of the Return of the King If you don't know Jesus, now is the time to embrace Him as Savior. If you do, it's time to take discipleship seriously—be alert, faithful, loyal, and prepared. Jesus is coming back, and the ultimate "pop quiz" could happen at any time.

Selah 3 For You meet him with rich blessings; You set a crown of fine gold upon his head. 4 He asked life of You; You gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. 5 His glory is great through Your salvation; splendor and majesty You bestow on him. 6 For You make him most blessed forever; You make him glad with the joy of Your presence. 7 For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved. 8 Your hand will find out all Your enemies; Your right hand will find out those who hate You. 9 You will make them as a blazing oven when You appear. The Lord will swallow them up in His wrath, and fire will consume them. 10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth, and their offspring from among the children of man. 11 Though they plan evil against You, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed. 12 For You will put them to flight; You will aim at their faces with Your bows. 13 Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength! We will sing and praise Your power. Key Words: Strength, Blessings, Life, Glory, Blessed, Joy, Forever Keystone Verse: Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength! We will sing and praise Your power. Welcome back to The Literary Life podcast and our series on J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter: Book 1. After sharing some thoughts on detective fiction as it relates to Rowling, our hosts Angelina Stanford and Thomas Banks discuss chapters 8-12. Some of the ideas they share are the following: Homeric echos and classical allusions in this book, the identity quest, the significance of characters' names, the four houses and the bestiary, the three parts of the soul, the Christian influence on Rowling's stories. Angelina also seeks to teach something about symbolism and structure of literature and art as seen through the Harry Potter books. Visit HouseofHumaneLetters.com for updates on classes with Angelina, Thomas, and other members of their teaching team. Previous episodes mentioned in this podcast: The Importance of the Detective Novel (Episode 3/174) Series on Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers (Episodes 4-8) Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie (Episode 79) Commonplace Quotes: The wise man combines the pleasures of the senses and the pleasures of the spirit in such a way as to increase the satisfaction he gets from both. W. Somerset Maugham, from The Narrow Corner For it is through symbols that man finds his way out of his particular situation and “opens himself” to the general and the Universal. Symbols awaken individual experience and transmute it into a spiritual act, into metaphysical comprehension of the world. Mircea Eliade, from The Sacred and the Profane The Fairies By William Allingham Up the airy mountain, Down the rushy glen,We daren't go a-hunting For fear of little men;Wee folk, good folk, Trooping all together;Green jacket, red cap, And white owl's feather!Down along the rocky shore Some make their home,They live on crispy pancakes Of yellow tide-foam;Some in the reeds Of the black mountain lake,With frogs for their watch-dogs, All night awake.High on the hill-top The old King sits;He is now so old and gray He's nigh lost his wits. With a bridge of white mist Columbkill he crosses,On his stately journeys From Slieveleague to Rosses;Or going up with music On cold starry nightsTo sup with the Queen Of the gay Northern Lights. They stole little Bridget For seven years long; When she came down again Her friends were all gone. They took her lightly back, Between the night and morrow,They thought that she was fast asleep, But she was dead with sorrow. They have kept her ever since Deep within the lake,On a bed of flag-leaves, Watching till she wake.By the craggy hill-side, Through the mosses bare,They have planted thorn-trees For pleasure here and there. If any man so daring As dig them up in spite,He shall find their sharpest thorns In his bed at night.Up the airy mountain, Down the rushy glen,We daren't go a-hunting For fear of little men;Wee folk, good folk, Trooping all together;Green jacket, red cap, And white owl's feather! We're taking it back to the classroom in today's episode! Chelsey and Sara reflect on their experience with high school summer reading as both students and teachers: the good, the great, and the hot takes. While we aren't assigning any reading in this episode, we are sharing 10 classics that would make for great summer reads at any age! For an enhanced reading experience, pair a past Novel Pairings episode with each of these classics to listen as you go. Of course, our main summer reading recommendation is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, our BIG summer readalong hosted in Patreon with classes, bonus episodes, and special recaps to get the most out of this huge novel. Novel Pairings operates on an academic calendar to keep our work sustainable. But like most teachers, just because we have summer “off” doesn't mean we aren't hard at work behind the scenes! This summer, we will take off from sharing new episodes on the main feed in July and August to devote more time and energy to planning for the year ahead, restoring our creativity, and strengthening our bond with Patreon community members. If you are missing Novel Pairings in your podcast feed, we would love for you to join our community for extra nerdy summer fun. Books Mentioned: The Once and Future King by T.H.
