Nick and Hannah both love board games. There I said it. So what are they doing in a Civics 101 episode? Well, from Student Council and Model UN to CIA intelligence acquisition scenarios, there is a fine line between games and simulation. We learn more about things when we pretend to do them. Today we talk to three designers about their civic-centric games; Tory Brown of Fort Circle Games discusses Votes for Women, Cole Wehrle of Wehrlegig Games breaks down John Company, and Non Breaking Space explains Cross Bronx Expressway, an upcoming game from GMT. The Women's Suffrage Movement in the US started small, very small in fact, in a tiny hamlet in New York State. Over time, it spread from state to state across the whole country as its following grew. Their fight for equal rights culminated in the ratification of the 19th Amendment after a seventy-year battle. However, while this monumental achievement was a vital step, it did not guarantee every woman access to the ballot. The story continues to this day across the globe and the fight is still fought to achieve Votes for Women by Tory Brown from Fort Circle Games. BJ and Steve welcome in a content creator who is also deep diving into the world of designing board games on Episode 144! This time, The NameFather has invited Liz Davidson, reviewer with Beyond Solitaire's YouTube Channel and podcast, and the co-designer (with David Thompson) of the upcoming game, Night Witches, from Fort Circle Games to talk about some spicy hot board games! In the banter, we chatted about: SDHistCon and the Summit Awards Recent plays of The Mists Over Carcassonne Recent plays of Chaos Cove Crowdfunding projects that have caught Liz's eye The big feature was a deep dive into NIGHT WITCHES, a new two-player game designed by Liz Davidson and David Thompson that is in development with Fort Circle Games. That's right -- it's a Gumbo Scoop -- you'll hear all about the design choices, history of the game, and development even before it hits crowdfunding! And finally, it's not Gumbo Live! unless we play a game with the Chat Krewe -- this time Steve and I bring back the all time Gumbo favorite, The Jambalaya Game! We mix in a lot of ancient history jokes (Liz is a Latin teacher and a student of ancient history) in with some really bad board game puns. CHAOS COVE crowdfunding project is on Gamefound right now and almost funded already! https://gamefound.com/en/projects/apegamer/chaos-cove Thanks for listening! Laissez les bon temps rouler!
Jason and Liz from Beyond Solitaire discuss the new release from Fort Circle Games about the passage of the 19th Amendment of the US, giving women the right to vote. The majority of the games that we are play are going to take a reasonable number of sessions and playthroughs to fully understand every possibility that they offer. We hope this write up gives you an idea of whether or not this game is something that you will consider playing or even add to your collection. Our Six Degrees of Expectation have been written to make it easier for you to find out what is important to you as a player. Even if we don't like something, hopefully it helps you to decide if it is something that you should find out more about. Welcome to the Torpedo! A show where we give brief reviews and tell you whether the game is a hit or a miss! Our first episode features Votes for Women from Fort Circle Games. Votes for Women is a card-driven game covering the American women's suffrage movement from 1848-1920, culminating with the ratification (or rejection) of the Nineteenth Amendment. The game provides competitive, co-operative and solitaire play, with co-operative and solitaire play against the "Oppobot." To win, the Suffragist player must have Congress pass the proposed Amendment and then have three-fourths of the states (36 of the then 48 states) ratify the Amendment. The Opposition player wins by either preventing Congress from passing the proposed Amendment or by having 13 states reject the Amendment. The game lasts for six turns - a turn consisting of drawing cards from the players' own decks, bidding on strategy cards, and then six rounds of card play where a player may play a card for an event or discard a card to campaign, organize or lobby Congress. If Congress has proposed the Amendment but neither 36 states have ratified nor 13 states have rejected, then the game goes to Final Voting. See More about Votes for Women
This one's fairly patriotic, folks. And I mean real pride in our nation, the story of overcoming our shortcomings to become a more tolerant people. Not that "America is #1" crud. We talk about Votes For Women, the newest historical game from Fort Circle Games, which deals with the passing of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in the United States, way too long after our nation came into existence. And we also discuss this game, this history, other historical games and more with Liz Davidson, the host of Beyond Solitaire! Beyond Solitaire Our links

On June 4, 1919 the US Government sent the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, was sent to the states for ratification. Tennessee voted in favor just over a year later becoming the 36th state and gaining the required two-thirds majority for ratification. In the end, 40 states voted in favor and 8 voted against it. The 8 that voted no, would reverse their decisions years later, with the final being Mississippi in 1984. This week Kiwi and bP are playing Votes for Women published in 2022 by Fort Circle Games and designed by Tory Brown. We talk with designer Tory Brown about her upcoming game Votes for Women, what games influenced her, and why it's hard to design a game about contemporary issues. Votes for Women is a game from Fort Circle Games. Games mentioned in this episode: Votes for Women, 1960: The Making of a President, Watergate, World's Fair 1893, Stonewall Uprising, First Monday in October, Ticket to Ride, Targi, Patchwork, and Wingspan
The podcast about the board game "Votes for Women" is Beyond Solitaire. The game will soon be available via Fort Circle Games, www.fortcircle.com.
Today we are live at Labyrinth Games in Washington DC with their first Wargame Wednesday event. We speak with the event director then we speak with Stephen Rangazas who is designing a COIN game about the end of the British colonial empire with his new game from GMT "The British Way". Then we wrap with with my BFF Kevin Bertram from Fort Circle Games.
In the last couple of years, I've been looking to interview more designers of games that have something to say about history and through history about the world we currently live in. Tory Brown, designer of Votes for Women, joined me on the podcast to talk about the design of her new game from Fort Circle Games. I think there is a lot of learn from this conversation about designing games that tackle much deeper issues than your standard board game content. I've felt the same way about the forthcoming Stonewall Uprising, Bloc by Bloc, and Cross Bronx Expressway. Let's make more games about real world issues that can help us demystify these kinds of issues in our modern day or even provide more context for them. Tory Brown had a ton to say about the real life issue of women's rights and the way she incorporated that history into this game. I probably could have talked to her for another hour or two.
