The vibe at every table was incredible—full of camaraderie, excitement, and a shared love for a truly outstanding trading card game. No matter your skill level, players were patient, welcoming, and happy to walk you through plays in the side events. Now, the main event, that was all business. One more thing worth noting: the crowd spanned all ages, including families, which was great to see. Next year's event is heading to Disneyland, so if you're thinking about going, start planning now! While we were in Vegas, we also tried a new game from Fort Circle Games: Hunt for Blackbeard. It's a two‑player hidden‑movement game that really picks up speed once you understand the action flow, and the tension spikes beautifully in the final two rounds. The rules take a bit to settle in, but by the second playthrough we had it down. And if Blackbeard's history isn't familiar to you, keep reading below. Blackbeard, born Edward Teach around 1680 in Bristol, England, became one of the most feared and legendary pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy, terrorizing the Caribbean and the Atlantic coast between 1716 and 1718. Known for his dramatic appearance—most famously his long black beard and the smoldering fuses he tied into it to intimidate enemies—he commanded the formidable Queen Anne's Revenge, a 40‑gun warship crewed by hundreds of men. Blackbeard's exploits included blockading Charleston, capturing merchant vessels, and cultivating a fearsome reputation that often allowed him to win without violence. He also operated with a small fleet that included the Adventure, a sloop commanded by his lieutenant Israel Hands, as well as smaller vessels such as the Margaret and the Sea Captain. His pirating career was short-lived, ending in November 1718 when he was killed in a fierce battle at Ocracoke Island, NC by Lieutenant Robert Maynard's forces, cementing his place as one of history's most iconic pirates. Luxury yachting is often seen from the outside as glamour, freedom, celebrities, billionaires, royals, and floating palaces. But behind that image is a very different world of service, sacrifice, pressure, extraordinary human moments, and stories most people never hear.In this episode of Captain's Chat, Captain Liam Devlin speaks with Timmo Elliott and Gemma Masferrer, authors of Sailing Through the Excess, a book that pulls back the curtain on life inside the luxury yachting world.Timmo shares how years in hospitality, travel, and yachting led to a memoir filled with remarkable encounters, unforgettable guests, and the realities behind elite service. Gemma explains how she helped bring those stories together, shaping Timmo's experiences into a book with wider context around climate change, gender equality at sea, the MeToo movement, language, identity, and the sacrifices behind maritime life. This is a conversation about luxury yachting, but also about storytelling, human connection, nature, resilience, and the courage to step outside your comfort zone.Guests: Timmo Elliott & Gemma Masferrer Book: Sailing Through the Excess

What opportunities are possible like when faith, creativity, and technology collide later in life?In this week's episode of Latter-day Lights, Scott and Emily sit down once again with former Bering Sea Captain and guest, Jake Jacobsen, to explore a life-changing chapter of his journey—using AI and modern technology to bring decades-old lyrics, spiritual reflections, and life stories to life through music and video. After spending nearly three decades navigating some of the most dangerous waters on Earth, Jake shares how long hours alone in the sea became a sacred space for songwriting, prayer, and reflection. Now, years later, those words are finding new expression through AI-assisted music, allowing him to share his testimony of Jesus Christ, the Atonement, and the covenant path with audiences around the world.Jake opens up about the creative process behind his songs, the spiritual intentions guiding his use of artificial intelligence, why he sees this work as part of his personal mission, and his desire to preserve faith-filled stories for future generations. This thoughtful conversation dives into big questions about creative authenticity, inspiration, and discernment in an age of rapidly advancing technology—and how tools like AI can be used intentionally to spread light, hope, and faith in Christ.*** Please SHARE Jake's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/j-BIAdsuMBA-----To WATCH Jake's music and talks for LDS Leaders, “The Wheelhouse of Hope,” visit: https://www.youtube.com/@WheelhouseofHopeTo WATCH Jake's music and stories for Christian audiences, “Jake's Wheelhouse,” visit: https://www.youtube.com/@CaptainJakesSongsandStoriesTo LISTEN to Jake's song, “The Master's Music,” visit: https://youtu.be/wnmtbM1vtP8?si=_7yKwCuwrGDLfL_4To WATCH Jake's first Latter-Day Lights episode, visit: https://youtu.be/k5MMS8tEB_ATo READ Jake's book, “Chronicles of Being a Sea Captain,” visit: https://a.co/hYb6gZ5To READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.

THERE WAS NO reason why the U.S. Marshal should spend the night on board the cramped, smelly little freight schooner he was in charge of. After all, the ship was anchored in a semi-civilized town — Steilacoom, near Tacoma in the Washington territory — and there were several decent hotels there. The next day he'd have a few hours' cruise to Seattle, where the ship would be sold to pay the debts of its owner, Captain James “Jemmy” Jones — who was, by a happy coincidence, locked up in a jailhouse over 100 miles away. Or so he thought. Actually he was much closer. In fact, as the marshal stepped off the deck of the little freighter and walked off toward his comfy hotel bed, there is a pretty good chance Jemmy Jones actually waved a cheerful goodbye to him as he left. THE WHOLE SITUATION stemmed from a near-death experience Jemmy and his crew had had the previous year, while crossing over the dreaded Columbia River Bar in his ship.... (Columbia River Bar, Clatsop County; 1860s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2503e1110b.jemmy-jones-rascally-captain-695.143.html)

It's time to review one of our most requested movies since we started the show... Watchmen! The film that helped put Zack Snyder on the map and got him the DC films to come, Watchmen is a non-traditional super hero movie in many respects but it is oh so deep and nuanced with nerdy discussions to be had. We also review the Ultimate Edition which adds so much more to the movie. Helping us with this meaty film is our great friend of the show Eric Blattberg! Before we jump into the film we also break down our top 5 Director Cuts of all time. It's a long movie so it's a long show. In this episode, Kate spoke with historian Dr. Martha Hodes. Dr. Hodes is a professor of history at New York University and the author of multiple previous books focused on the nineteenth century, including The Sea Captain's Wife: A True Story of Love, Race, and War in the Nineteenth Century, and Mourning Lincoln, which won multiple awards and was longlisted for the National Book Award. Her most recent book, however, has a very different focus. My Hijacking: A Personal History of Forgetting and Remembering, is an account of her experience as a 12-year-old hostage aboard a hijacked airliner in 1970. We talked about what it was like to write such a different type of history book, and the experience of mining her own unreliable archive for information. You'll also learn how she ends up with as many as 20 or 25 drafts and why the best way to start a project is to pick a favorite document and just start writing about it.

Phil emphasizes instilling core values like personal responsibility and a growth mindset in advisors. For prospective team members, he delves deep into work ethic, understanding their peak performances.Prospecting strategies evolve with coaching stages. Taking fear as a motivator, he meticulously followed advice during his early years. Now, he imparts wisdom on coaching the "uncoachable" by understanding their unique wiring.Listen to hear Phil emphasize discipline, accountability, and taking ownership. Drawing from his life, he shares lessons from his father and his personal health journey. Structure is key. A structured day ensures alignment with goals. Identifying one's inclination towards discipline, responsibility, or accountability aids in efficiency. So, tune in to discover a transformative coaching experience.Episode Highlights:07:27 - In the beginning, it's all about discipline and process. Am I prepared to make an ask versus am I winging it? We do all this work to prepare ourselves for selling. We role play. Even on the phone, we role play. We go through that step by step process. Maybe somebody watches us. We do joint work. And then when it comes to actually doing the active prospecting, we just decide to wing it. We just let everything kind of fly.22:39 - One of the biggest issues is career advisors getting in the way and basically, unwinding the training that was done. And I love them, but boy, they can really become a hindrance here because of their messaging. 32:31 - What I do when I work with somebody now is I find out how they're wired and then we make those three choices. They get to make three choices. You disciplined in this, responsible for it, or accountable to it. And then what we do is we take every task goes through that filter. And then as it goes through the filter, they start to realize, based on your comment, which is I become aware that I have this problem. I don't feel like crap anymore because I'm wired this way. I just have to deal with it. And then we set up structure for this to happen.ContactHeather Price ConsultingPhil BenderLinkedInWebsiteEmailThe Sea Captain Way for Financial Advisors
