In a recent episode of "Success Leaves Clues," hosted by Dustin Plantholt, listeners can dive into a captivating conversation with the renowned artist Marcos Marin. Marcos, whose career spans over four decades, begins by reflecting on his eclectic journey from being a classically trained pianist in Brazil to becoming an acclaimed optical artist based in Paris. His story is not just about artistic evolution but also a profound love for his craft that transcends mediums.   Marcos shares insights into the intrinsic motivation behind his work and his decision to veer away from traditional career paths to create a unique artistic identity. He credits his success to a lifelong passion and the influential figures in his life, including his parents—his mother, a soprano opera singer, and his father, a film producer. These familial influences deeply embedded the love of art in him, shaping his approach and commitment to his work.   Throughout the discussion, Marcos speaks about the pivotal moments in his career, particularly his transition from music to visual arts. He narrates how after moving to Paris to study, he fell in love with the vibrant art scene and decided to stay, gradually shifting his focus from performing arts to visual expression. This shift was not sudden but a result of continuous exploration and self-discovery.   One of the most compelling parts of the episode is when Marcos discusses his mentorship under Pierre Cardin, who not only supported him as an artist but also provided him with a studio in Southern France. This relationship was crucial for Marcos, offering him both the physical space and the creative freedom to explore and refine his art. Marcos emphasizes the importance of such patronage in the arts, noting how crucial it is for artists to find supporters who believe in their vision.   Furthermore, Marcos delves into the philosophical aspects of his work and life, discussing how he defines success. For him, success is about authenticity and impact rather than fame or financial gain. He recounts stories of how he's used his art to connect with people on a deeper level, whether they're art collectors or ordinary viewers, and how these interactions enrich his experience as an artist.   Listeners will also hear about the challenges and setbacks Marcos faced, including personal losses and societal pressures. He talks openly about the loss of his family members and the struggles with his identity and acceptance within his conservative family due to his sexual orientation. These experiences, he explains, have not only shaped his character but also his art, infusing it with a deeper meaning and a drive to affect change through his creations.

Who are you wearing?” That's the question they ask the “popular” crowd as they stop and pose so they can be photographed on the red carpet.      Personally, I haven't watched awards shows in years.  The same “stars” are judged the next day and their choice of clothing is either praised or trashed.      Have you ever let what others think about your clothing determine what you wear?  I know I have done this many times.  Now let me confess about my who are you wearing era.  Confession is good for the soul, and I pray it helps you know that you are not alone.       I remember the first time I thought “who” I was wearing mattered.  The summer between 8th and 9th grade I learned about designer jeans and shoes.  I was looking in my TEEN magazine to see what types of clothes I should look for when my mom took me school shopping.      The emphasis was on the label across the right back side.  It was a person's name.  Back then the popular names were Jordache, Pierre Cardin, Gloria Vanderbilt, Calvin Klein, and others.  Did you wear any of these?  These designer jeans ran between $40-$50.  Now that I look back that was a lot of money in the early 80's to spend on a 14-year-old girl whose body was constantly changing.   Be sure and listen to this episode for more on our clothing compared to our confidence in Christ.

We do not get many Excursion G.O.s on this podcast, so I am thrilled she agreed to come on and share her story. When she was in college, she worked at an archeological Museum, which helped with the excursions to the Mayan ruins in Mexico. From the city of Brotherly Love, please help me welcome, Rose Torelli! Before Club Med, Rose learned French in high school and visited Quebec and France. In her second semester in her junior year of college, Rose spent that time abroad in Paris and stayed with a French family. Prior to Club Med, Rose worked in New York City in PR in the fashion industry for Pierre Cardin, when she applied to Club Med at twenty-three years old. Rose details the excursions that both St. Lucia and Cancun offered in 1989. As much as I enjoy it when things go as planned, I asked Rose if she ever had an excursion go awry and one did, while she was on a snorkeling trip to Cozumel. As an Excursion G.O., they are not often in the village, but rest assured, she still did her share of Crazy Signs and shows! Rose also lets us know why her favorite excursion was the one to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and she explains the meaning behind the G.O. t-shirt, “Cancun II- Better Than Never!”. Rose took what she learned in Club Med when she later worked for an International Marketing Manager in a French-owned company and handled relations with affiliates all over the world. Please enjoy this episode with Rose! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. From beauty in our last throwback pick episode to fashion in this one, I have another of my heroes, Robin Givhan, on the program today. Robin is a fashion critic at The Washington Post and is a Pulitzer Prize winner, having won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2006—the first time that award was given to a fashion writer. Just as she herself has made history, her 2015 book The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History talks about a night that was so culturally impactful it forever changed the history of fashion, specifically American fashion. The Battle of Versailles took place 50 years ago this month, and saw five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, Marc Bohan, and Hubert de Givenchy) pitted against five American designers (Oscar de la Renta, Stephen Burrows, Halston, Bill Blass, and Anne Klein) in a competition concocted to raise money for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles. The deck was more than stacked against the American fashion designers—it was all but assured that victory would go to the French. But then, lo and behold, the Americans stole the show, and not just the American fashion industry but the global fashion industry changed forever. It is a fantastic conversation about a game-changing moment in history with one of the most respected journalists in the fashion stratosphere. I can't wait for you to listen.   The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled Into the Spotlight and Made History by Robin Givhan

Robin Givhan, Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion critic for the Washington Post, presents her first book, The Battle of Versailles. Givhan, in conversation with Patricia Mears, deputy director of The Museum at FIT, shares the story of a 1973 face-off at the Palace of Versailles between five American designers (Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows, Bill Blass, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta) and five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin among them).  Watch the full video with captions on YouTube. The Museum at FIT (MFIT) is the only museum dedicated exclusively to the art of fashion in New York City. https://www.fitnyc.edu/museum
