Erdogan tightens his grip on Turkey

On May 21st a Turkish court took the unprecedented step of removing the CHP's elected leadership, led by Ozgur Ozel, the latest sign of Turkish President Erdogan's tightening grip on the country. It's also a sign that Erdogan intends to run for another term as president, and with Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in prison, this move can only mean one thing: Erdogan does not intend to leave the result of a future election up to chance. The opposition has vowed it will fight back, but the broader question is whether this is the last nail in the coffin for Turkey's democracy. Can it recover, and if so, is this a fight it will have to undertake on its own? President Donald Trump's praise of Erdogan as a “tough guy” who has “done a very good job”, and the EU's wider focus on the transatlantic relationship and Ukraine, have many doubting if the West will bring any pressure down on Ankara. At the same time, another story is brewing in north Africa, where Turkey is looking to expand its influence in Libya. Recent reports are indicating a new Turkish push to engage with Benghazi, while we've also seen headlines hinting at US-Turkish coordination in Libya and a potential US effort to unify Libya. Greece is undoubtedly watching these developments closely, especially considering Turkey is likely to press Benghazi to support its illegal 2019 maritime agreement with Tripoli. International report
Turkey courts Libya's rival factions in bid to further Mediterranean ambitions

International report

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2026 5:40

In a bold move by Ankara, Turkey this week brought together Libya's two rival militaries for international exercises. While firmly supporting the Tripoli-based regime, Turkey is now extending an olive branch to the Benghazi administration, aiming to steady Libya and broaden its sway across the region. For the first time, Libya's two military forces participated internationally together under one flag. According to the Turkish defence ministry, 501 personnel from both Libyan armies joined Turkey's Efes 2026 military exercises. “There needs to be one unified army in Libya, one unified military force,” said Libya expert Aya Burweila of the Athens-based Centre for Hellenic and Mediterranean Studies. “I think these joint exercises help with that. They help facilitate closer cooperation with both sides, and that can only be a good thing.” Libya has been split since 2014, with the Government of National Unity ruling the west from Tripoli and the Government of National Stability holding the east in Benghazi. While Ankara has long championed Tripoli, analyst Burweila suggests that May's joint exercises signal a new Turkish push to engage with Benghazi. “This is a huge, practical pivot towards the east [by Turkey]. It has huge implications for Libya's stability. Turkey's position now is that it has good relations with both sides,” said Burweila. “It's not just joint military exercises. There are business interests, there are sales of weapons and drones, and so forth.”  Turkey and Italy boost cooperation in bid to shape Libya's political future Energy reserves For Ankara, courting the Benghazi administration, led by military commander Khalifa Haftar, is all about expanding Turkey's influence in the eastern Mediterranean, argues Jalel Harchaoui of the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based defence think tank.  Harchaoui said Ankara needs Haftar's support to enforce a 2019 memorandum of understanding that Turkey signed with the Tripoli administration to create a joint exclusive economic zone in Libyan waters.  “Now, if Ankara wants to enforce it, which it does, it needs to have the Haftar family on board,” Harchaoui explained. “The Haftar family can deliver on two very necessary things: the parliamentary ratification, because the parliament happens to be controlled by the Haftar family, and also the part of the coast that is involved in this arrangement is eastern Libya, not western Libya.” However, the Turkey-Libya exclusive economic zone, believed to have large untapped energy reserves, is strongly opposed by Greece and Cyprus, who claim it violates their territorial waters. Neighbouring Egypt and Israel have also voiced concerns. Haftar's eastern Libyan government shares their reluctance. “Eastern Libya has very good relations with Egypt and has cordial relations with Greece as well. And this memorandum, at least from their side, violates their rights,” explained Libya analyst Burweila.  She added: “I think what lots of Libyans feel is: 'this fight is not our fight. We don't want to be involved in this kind of dispute.' So while this is a big priority for Turkey, it is not a priority for Libyans, and I think everybody there would prefer to kick this can down the road.” Egypt and Turkey's closer ties spark hope for peace among Libya's rival factions Carrot and stick Throughout 2025, Ankara wooed Haftar and his son Saddam, chief of staff of the Libyan National Army, but saw little progress. According to analyst Harchaoui, Turkey has since toughened its stance, zeroing in on Haftar's late-year military backing of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Turkish-made combat drones have been pictured on airbases in southern Egypt, which like Turkey backs the Sudanese army in its fight against the paramilitary RSF. According to a New York Times investigation, they have been used for strikes in Sudan. “This was a new development,” said Harchaoui, “It was basically Turkey saying, 'I smiled for most of 2025, and you did nothing for me. And you will have seen two faces. You will have seen the carrot, obviously, but also the stick.'” In April, Turkey delivered a new batch of military drones to Haftar's army, continuing this carrot-and-stick policy. The Turkish defence ministry says it aims to hold further joint military exercises with both Libyan armies. While Turkey is stepping up its efforts to stabilise Libya, its goal of securing joint control of a huge swathe of the eastern Mediterranean threatens to drag the country further into an increasingly bitter regional rivalry.

The discussion also covers Stephen Decatur's heroism at Tripoli, where he demonstrated the flexibility to change plans—burning the USS Philadelphia when "cutting it out" became impossible. Stavridis further defends Lloyd Bucher's surrender of the Pueblo as a rational act in the absence of any means of resistance, arguing that leadership requires acting logically rather than choosing suicidal defiance. "Rooted & Grounded" - Part Two: "AGENCY - The Power Working Within"

Firm Foundation with Bryan Hudson

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2026 38:50

DOWNLOAD KEYNOTE SLIDES BRIEF SUMMARY: In Rooted & Grounded, Part Two: The Power Working Within, Pastor Bryan Hudson teaches from Ephesians 3:14–21 that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think because His power is working within believers. Being rooted and grounded in love gives us stability, while God's inner power gives us strength, confidence, and responsibility. The sermon emphasizes that believers are not powerless, even when they feel weak or overwhelmed. God's power within us gives us agency—the ability to act, choose, make decisions, resist oppression, and make a difference. Pastor Hudson connects this spiritual truth to personal life, ministry, history, and justice, showing that God's power is not only for personal blessing but also for serving others and impacting systems. The main message is: God's power within us enables us to live in victory, bless others, and use our God-given agency to make a difference in the world. DETAILED SUMMARY Series Title: Rooted & Grounded   Part Two: The Power Working Within Pastor Bryan Hudson, D.Min. Main Text: Ephesians 3:14–21 Key Verse: Ephesians 3:20,  “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…”  Central Theme This sermon teaches that God's power is not only above us or around us, but working within us. Pastor Hudson connects Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3 to the believer's personal life, the church's corporate mission, and the broader responsibility to use God-given power to bless others and confront unjust systems. The message moves from personal encouragement to social responsibility. God's power within believers is not merely for feeling better, receiving blessings, or personal success. It is also for agency, dominion, service, courage, justice, and community impact. 1. Review of Part One: Rooted and Grounded Pastor Hudson begins by reviewing the first part of the series. He explains that the phrase “rooted and grounded”combines two images: Rooted is an agricultural term. It pictures a tree planted deeply in soil, drawing life, nourishment, and stability from its roots. Grounded is an architectural term. It pictures a building resting on a strong foundation. The point is clear: There is no growth without roots, and there is no structure without foundation. Believers must be rooted in God's love and grounded on a solid spiritual foundation. This foundation prepares them to understand and experience the power of God working within them. 2. Paul's Prayer in Ephesians 3 The sermon centers on Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3:14–21. Pastor Hudson highlights the major blessings Paul prays for: The believer is strengthened with might through the Holy Spirit in the inner person. Christ dwells in the heart by faith. The believer is rooted and grounded in love. The saints are able to comprehend the width, length, depth, and height of Christ's love. They come to know the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge. They are filled with all the fullness of God. Then Paul reaches the powerful conclusion: “Now to Him who is able…” Pastor Hudson emphasizes that the words “He is able” summarize the confidence of the passage. God is able to do what we cannot do. He is able to work beyond human weakness, limited resources, opposition, uncertainty, and difficult circumstances. 3. God's Ability Works Through God's Power in Us A major point of the sermon is that God's ability is not disconnected from believers. God does exceedingly abundantly above what we ask or think according to the power that works in us. This means God's power is not only external. It operates internally through believers. Pastor Hudson stresses that life contains situations, circumstances, opportunities, and uncertainties. In all of these, believers need the mindset that God is able. But they must also understand that God often works through the power He has placed within them. This power is not only for individual comfort. It is for generational impact, ministry, witness, and service. Pastor Hudson uses the example of ministry at a juvenile center, where young men were saved, to show that lives are changed when God's power works through people. 4. God Is Never in a Slump Pastor Hudson uses sports illustrations to explain that people may go through “slumps,” but God never does. He references athletes such as James Harden and Shohei Ohtani to show that gifted people may have seasons when they do not seem to perform at their normal level. Yet the ability remains within them. He applies this spiritually: believers may feel like they are in a slump, but God is never in a slump. The Holy Spirit is never in a slump. The Word of God is never in a slump. Therefore, when believers feel weak, stuck, or discouraged, the issue is not that God's power has disappeared. The issue is learning how to reconnect with, believe in, and act according to what God has already placed within them. 5. The Meaning of “Power”: Dunamis Pastor Hudson explains that the Greek word for power in the New Testament is dunamis. He connects it to the idea of dynamite, noting that it refers to inherent ability, force, or capacity. This power is not merely emotional excitement. It is the power residing in something by virtue of its nature. For believers, this means God has placed real spiritual capacity within them. The sermon emphasizes that believers should not speak against what God has placed inside them. Even when they do not feel powerful, they should agree with God's Word. Pastor Hudson says believers should not primarily ask, “How do I feel?” Instead, they should ask, “What do I believe?” Faith-filled speech matters because people hear their own words. What believers say can either strengthen or weaken their faith. 6. Powerlessness Is a Feeling, Not the Truth Pastor Hudson identifies one of the worst feelings people can have: the feeling of powerlessness. However, he warns that feelings are data, not final truth. A person may feel powerless, but that does not mean they are powerless. He refers to 2 Corinthians 2:10–11, where Paul says believers are not ignorant of Satan's devices. Pastor Hudson applies this principle by teaching that one of Satan's devices is to make people feel powerless. The enemy wants believers to accept the idea that they cannot act, decide, resist, speak, move, or make a difference. But this is deception. The believer must reject the lie of powerlessness because God's power is working within. 7. Agency: A Key Concept in the Sermon A central concept in the sermon is agency. Pastor Hudson defines agency as the ability or power to act, make decisions, choose, make things happen, and influence one's life and environment rather than being controlled by others or circumstances. He teaches that agency is part of being made in the image of God. The closest biblical concept to agency, he says, is dominion. Using Genesis 1:26–27, he explains that God gave humanity dominion over creation. However, he makes an important distinction: God did not give people dominion over other people. Agency means believers have responsibility before God to act faithfully. It does not mean controlling others. 8. The Loss of Agency as a Strategy of Oppression Pastor Hudson teaches that one of the enemy's strategies is to remove people's sense of agency. He shares personally that there have been times when he felt beat down, disrespected, or overwhelmed to the point that he began looking for others to tell him what to do. In those moments, he recognized that the enemy had tried to convince him he no longer had agency. He recalls his mother's counseling approach: after talking with someone, she would ask, “Now, what are you going to do?” That question restores responsibility. Counseling, advice, prayer, and encouragement are valuable, but the person must eventually act. Agency requires decision and action. 9. Agency and the Founding of the United States The sermon then moves into a civics and history application. Pastor Hudson notes that the United States is approaching the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the nation. He warns that people will hear many romanticized and fabricated versions of American history. He urges listeners to value the full truth, not only the polished narrative. He says the founding of the United States was rooted in agency because the colonists rebelled against the repressive reign of King George III. They resisted taxation, lack of representation, and oppressive control. The nation was founded through rebellion against repression. That was an exercise of agency. However, Pastor Hudson then exposes the contradiction: while the founders exercised agency for themselves, they denied agency to enslaved Africans. 10. The Contradiction of Liberty and Slavery Pastor Hudson highlights the contradiction between the language of liberty in America's founding documents and the reality of slavery. He references the population of the colonies around the founding, noting that a significant number of people were enslaved. He also mentions the 1790 census, which counted millions of people in the new nation, including hundreds of thousands of enslaved people. The point is not merely historical. It is theological and moral. The founders spoke of liberty, justice, domestic tranquility, and the blessings of freedom, but enslaved people were excluded from those promises. Pastor Hudson asks: if the nation was truly founded on Christianity and the Bible, why were so many people kept enslaved? He argues that the nation had brilliant founders and a remarkable Constitution, but the full history must be told honestly. 11. The United States Was Not Founded as a Christian Government Pastor Hudson references the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli, signed during the presidency of John Adams, which stated that the government of the United States was not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion. His point is that while many founders respected Christianity and some were Christian, the government itself was designed to be secular, not a church-state system. He argues that the founders understood the danger of religious power being fused with government power, as had happened under monarchy in England. This section supports his broader theme: people must know the truth, reject idolatry, and exercise agency wisely. 12. Civil Rights as an Example of Agency Pastor Hudson then connects agency to the Civil Rights Movement. He references the Freedom Riders of 1961, including young Black and white activists who rode buses together into the South to protest segregation. They knowingly entered dangerous situations because they believed segregation was wrong. He mentions that the buses were attacked and firebombed, yet the Freedom Riders demonstrated agency by standing up to injustice. He also references Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech, especially the image of coming to the nation's capital to “cash a check.” King used the words of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence to demand that America honor its promises. This is presented as agency in action: knowing what belongs to you, standing on truth, and acting for justice. 13. God's Power Within Is Agency Pastor Hudson brings the sermon back to Ephesians 3:20 by saying: God's power within is agency. The power working in believers is not passive. It enables them to stand up, speak out, help people, challenge the status quo, and use their lives to make a difference. This power is not only about personal victory. It is about responsibility. Believers are called to use their agency to empower others. 14. Responsibility to Bless Others The sermon closes with several scriptures that emphasize responsibility, service, and good works. Pastor Hudson cites Jeremiah 29:7, where God tells His people to seek the peace of the city where they have been carried. He explains that peace means more than the absence of conflict. It includes completeness, welfare, soundness, and making a difference where one lives. He also cites Acts 20:35, where Paul reminds believers to support the weak and remember Jesus' words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” He references Titus 3:14, which teaches believers to maintain good works and meet urgent needs so they will not be unfruitful. Finally, he cites Galatians 6:10, which says that as believers have opportunity, they should do good to all, especially those of the household of faith. The sermon ends by calling believers to use their agency and dominion to honor God by blessing others. Main Takeaways The believer is rooted and grounded in love, but also empowered for action. God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think. God's power works within believers, not only around them. Feelings of powerlessness are not the truth. Agency is part of being made in the image of God. Dominion does not mean controlling people; it means acting responsibly under God. The enemy tries to remove people's sense of agency. Oppressive systems often function by denying agency to others. Believers must use God's power within them to bless others, seek justice, meet needs, and impact systems. The blessing of God comes with responsibility.   Concise Sermon Thesis Because believers are rooted and grounded in God's love, they carry God's power within them. That power gives them agency—the God-given ability to act, choose, serve, resist oppression, bless others, and make a difference in their generation.

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comThis conversation takes a direct look at one of the most debated claims in American politics: whether the United States was founded as a Christian nation. John Fea, a historian of early America, walks through how historians approach that question and why it often gets misunderstood in modern debates. He explains that history isn't just about facts—it's about context, causation, and change over time. Using examples from the founding era, Fea shows how different states handled religion in public life, including religious tests for office and established churches. At the same time, he highlights how those systems evolved as the country became more democratic and more religiously diverse. The conversation also unpacks common talking points like the Treaty of Tripoli and why it gets misused in today's arguments. Fea makes clear that both sides often cherry-pick history to support present-day political agendas. The episode closes with a practical takeaway: you don't need America to be a “Christian nation” to live out faith in public life. The real question is how individuals bring their values into a pluralistic democracy without distorting the past to justify it.Notable Resources MentionedWas America Founded as a Christian Nation?: https://bookshop.org/a/112456/9780664262495Why Study History?: https://bookshop.org/a/112456/9780801039652Guest BioJohn Fea is a historian of early America and Professor of American History at Messiah University. His work focuses on the relationship between religion and public life in the United States, particularly during the founding era. Planes are in the air and the military intervention in Libya has now begun. But how does the operation progress from here? And what actually happens in a war room?In the second part of this mini series, Ed Balls and George Osborne ask Sir John Sawers about how MI6 gathered intelligence to guide the path forwards. He tells the story of leaving William Hague "aghast" by securing a visa for the Libyan foreign minister, who he then flattered with dinner at one of the service's secure locations in return for crucial information… The pair also speak to former deputy national security adviser Hugh Powell about why David Cameron always felt that action was better than inaction, and hear from Cathy Ashton about why the fall of Tripoli was a moment of success for the PM and Nicolas Sarkozy. However, with Gaddafi still alive and the UN mandate not accounting for regime change, there was still reason to be apprehensive about the “huge challenge ahead”. Sawers and Powell discuss Gaddafi's skill of staying hidden, why MI6 doesn't actually have a “license to kill”, and their approaches to negotiations with the dictator in his final weeks – including asking Tony Blair for help. Thanks for listening. It's Monday, March 30th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian archbishop to Trump:  “Give us weapons” to “eradicate” Islamic terrorists Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, Nigeria called on the Trump administration to provide intelligence and weapons to the Nigerian government to help combat the brutal persecution of the country's Christians at the hands of Islamic terrorists, reports LifeSiteNews.com. During a March 20th press briefing hosted by Aid to the Church in Need as, Archbishop Kaigama praised Trump for being the first world leader to “clearly and unequivocally” declare that Nigerian Christians are being persecuted, reports EWTN. The archbishop emphasized, however, that Trump's remarks and his administration's December bombing in Nigeria have only emboldened Islamist terror groups, such as Boko Haram, to carry out more attacks on Christians. He called on the 47th president to share intelligence with and provide weapons to the Nigerian government to help them put an end to the persecution for good. Kaigama said, “I was glad when I heard Donald Trump say, ‘We are going to go to Nigeria; we are going to put an end to Boko Haram. At Christmas, we received a gift — a bomb that fell on Nigerian soil — and, truth be told, I could not say whether it did any good. “That incident, coupled with Donald Trump's words, has greatly inflamed the passions of the Islamists in that territory. The number of attacks, the number of kidnappings carried out by Boko Haram and other groups, has been rising ever since.” Islamic persecution of Christians in Nigeria tied to sharia law Persecution of Christians in Nigeria began to spike after 1999, when 12 northern states adopted Sharia law. The rise of the terrorist group Boko Haram in 2009 marked a dramatic escalation in the attacks. Famously, the group kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls in 2014; 87 of them are still listed as “missing.” From 2009 to 2022, over 50,000 Christians were killed in the country. A 2024 report found that more than 8,000 Nigerian Christians were killed and thousands more were abducted in 2023 alone, making it the bloodiest year on record for Islamic attacks against Christians in the country. Sportscaster Stephen Smith calls out hypocritical Democrats Stephen A. Smith, the ESPN sportscaster, speaks the truth when he ventures into the political world. This time, he chastised Democrats for hypocritically complaining about President Donald Trump's willingness to do something about the growing Iranian threat. Listen. SMITH: “You got a lot of nerve to be in the face of the American people saying for numerous administration, ‘Iran is a problem. They have to be dealt with.'  And then this man deals with them, and then all of a sudden, you complaining about him now. It doesn't really make sense. It's a lack of consistency.” BILL CLINTON: “I am formally announcing my intention to cut off all trade and investment with Iran.” GEORGE W. BUSH: “Our second goal is to prevent regimes that sponsored terror from threatening America or our friends and allies.  Iran aggressively pursues these weapons and exports terror while an unelected few repress the Iranian people's hope for freedom.” BARACK OBAMA: “I strongly believe that our national security interest now depends upon preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.” JOE BIDEN: “Well, I can say to you, Iran will never get a nuclear weapon on my watch, as they say.” DONALD TRUMP:  “As President of the United States, I would never allow the world's number one state sponsor of terror to obtain a nuclear weapon. I said that for a long time, and I didn't.” 3,500 U.S. Troops arrive in Middle East as Iran war strikes intensify More than 3,500 U.S. troops, including the U.S.S. Tripoli with about 2,500 Marines, arrived in the Middle East, officials announced Saturday, as strikes in the Iran war intensified, reports CBS News. It's the most updated of the amphibious warships, known as a "big deck," which allows more room for F-35 Stealth Fighter Jets, Ospreys and other aircraft. The ship had previously been based in Japan when the order to deploy to the Middle East came almost two weeks ago. Corey Lewandowski out at Department of Homeland Security Corey Lewandowski, a special government employee who served as a top adviser to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, no longer has a role with the DHS, reports NewsNation.com. Last week, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee called for an investigation, saying that almost immediately after entering the agency, Lewandowski “exercised outsized influence over DHS far beyond what a special government employee is authorized to do.” Lewandowski was the campaign manager for President Trump in 2016. Plus, according to the September 2021 report of conservative media outlet American Greatness, he had an extramarital affair with the married South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, for whom he had long been a political advisor. Exodus 20:14 says, “You shall not commit adultery.” War Secretary Pete Hegseth reforms Chaplain Corps War Secretary Pete Hegseth says his latest reforms will allow the Chaplain Corps to fulfill its mission of being the spiritual backbone of America's military, reports The Western Journal. HEGSETH: “In previous administrations, our Chaplain Corps was infected by political correctness and secular humanism. The core functions of the Chaplain Corps were changed and watered down until they were viewed by many as nothing more than therapists. Faith and virtue were traded for self-help and self-care. “The crucible of combat tests more than the body. It tests conviction, character and spirit. The military's Chaplain Corps serves as spiritual and moral backbone of our nation's armed forces. Chaplains help forge spiritual readiness across the force, and that matters because in combat, in crisis, and in loss, a war fighter needs more than a coping mechanism. “They need truth, ‘big T' truth. They need conviction. They need a shepherd. Spiritual health is equally important to a service member's physical and emotional health.” According to a War Department news release, the number of faith codes used in the service has been winnowed down to 31. In 2017, the Pentagon issued a list of 221 groups that qualified as a religious group. Oddly enough, the list included witches and atheists, according to Stars and Stripes. Hegseth said, “It was impractical and unusable, and many codes were never used at all.” He noted that 82% of service members, who identify as being religious, used six of the codes. The War Secretary added that the chaplains will display their religious insignia on their uniforms instead of their ranks. He said, “A chaplain is first and foremost a chaplain, and an officer second. This change is a visual representation of that fact.” Christian stewardess gave her life for passengers on sinking ship And finally, on March 30th, 1899, the steamship Stella, carrying 147 passengers and 43 crew. struck some rocks in a fog while sailing to Guernsey, the second largest island in the Channel Islands in the English Channel. Mary Rogers, a cheerful, kind, and hard-working stewardess, supervised the escape of a large number of women and relinquished her own life vest to the last of them and gave up her place in the lifeboat. Four lifeboats were successfully launched and one capsized. Raising her hands to Heaven, Mary Rogers yelled, “Lord, have me!” as the ship sank beneath her within eight minutes. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” Or, in this case, absolute strangers. In another chapter in the U.S. Marine story, are these 2,500 Marines in their vertical take-off Ospreys about to write more glorious history “from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli”? I think so. My crystal ball says that they will be storming the Strait of Hormuz and securing it. Along with the seizure of Kharg Island, that will seal the final doom of the mad-dog mullahs and their tyranny over the Persian people and their terrorism over the whole world….including, as President Trump correctly judged…..us!

What If Fear Is A Signal To Pray

Fear does not wait for a convenient moment, it shows up in the middle of real life. We open with Psalm 56 and stay with David's refrain until it sinks in: trust is a choice you make while the threat is still there. Along the way we pray for you, your family, your marriage, and for those who feel abandoned, abused, or alone, because faith is not theory when people are hurting. Then we turn to Luke 1:1–25 and walk through Zechariah and Elizabeth, Gabriel's message, and the consequences of disbelief. The theme that keeps surfacing is timing. We want answers now, we want relief now, we want the promise now, yet God moves “at the proper time.” If you've been wrestling with impatience, doubt, or the silence between prayer and fulfillment, this Bible reading and commentary brings language to that struggle. We also talk candidly about marriage advice through Proverbs 5, the importance of Scripture as a light for your path, and why passing down stories of courage matters. A Medal of Honor profile of Jeremiah Z. Brown leads into a wider reflection on American history, including the Barbary War and the Treaty of Tripoli, and how history can shape the way we think about conflict, ideology, and responsibility today.Subscribe so you do not miss the next conversation, and if the show helps you, share it with a friend and leave a review so more people can find it.#TreatyOfTripoli #DailyScripture#MiddleGradeFantasy Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe Countryside Book Series https://www.amazon.com/Countryside-Book-J-T-Cope-IV-ebook/dp/B00MPIXOB2

It's Monday, March 16th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 400 Christians murdered in Congo in one year Christians are being attacked, murdered, and abducted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo every week, and the violence appears to be worse than ever, reports International Christian Concern. Between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025, the Institute for International Religious Freedom reported that nearly 400 Christians were murdered in the African nation of Congo. And this is only a fraction of the total violence being perpetrated. Rebel militias have gained vast influence over the Christian-majority nation due to extremist Islamist ideologies, years-long civil wars, and political upheaval. According to Open Doors, Congo is the 29th most oppressive country worldwide for Christians. The persecuted Christians in Congo are no doubt praying Psalm 91 which says, “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.' Surely, He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. … You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day. … A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.” (verses 2,3,5, 7-8) Missile strikes U.S. Embassy in Iraq A missile has struck a helipad inside the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq as President Donald Trump's war on Iran heads into its third week, reports The Daily Mail. Plumes of smoke were seen above the U.S. embassy in the Iraqi capital. The missile landed within the embassy's boundaries. Pentagon sending assault ship & 2,500 Marines toward Iran The Pentagon is deploying the U.S.S. Tripoli and 2,500 Marines to the Middle East after President Trump vowed Friday to unleash “unparalleled firepower,” reports the New York Post. On Friday morning, War Secretary Pete Hegseth gave this overview. HEGSETH: “With every passing hour, we know, and we know they know, that the military capabilities of their evil regime are crumbling. They can barely communicate, let alone coordinate. They're confused, and we know it.  Our response? We will keep pressing. We will keep pushing, keep advancing. No quarter, no mercy for our enemies.” Iran's blocking Strait of Hormuz leading to global oil price spike The deployment of the amphibious assault ship comes as the American military admits it's currently unable to break Iranian influence over the vital Strait of Hormuz as global oil prices spike.  The Strait of Hormuz is located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's most strategically important choke points. The expected two-week voyage from East Asia matches Energy Secretary Chris Wright's prediction of reopening the crucial waterway “by the end of the month.” Secretary Hegseth was perturbed by a CNN report that Iran's stranglehold of the Strait of Hormuz was a surprise. HEGSETH: “More fake news from CNN. Reports that the ‘Trump administration underestimated the Iran war's impact on the Strait of Hormuz.' “Patently ridiculous, of course! For decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do: Hold the Strait hostage. CNN doesn't think we thought of that. It's a fundamentally unserious report.” Idaho House urges Supreme Court to invalidate homosexual “marriage” The Idaho House of Representatives has voted to reject the Supreme Court's 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges and urged the justices to reconsider the decision legalizing homosexual marriage nationwide, reports the Herzog Foundation. Lawmakers approved House Joint Memorial 17 last Tuesday in a 44-26 vote. All Democrats voted against the measure, and a small number of Republicans joined them. The resolution now heads to the Idaho Senate. The memorial states the Legislature “rejects the Obergefell decision” and “calls upon the Supreme Court of the United States to reverse Obergefell and restore the natural definition of marriage.” Supporters say the 2015 ruling overrode the authority of states and ignored the will of voters who had already defined marriage in state law. The resolution says Obergefell “is at odds with the Constitution of the United States and the principles upon which the United States is established.” It also says the ruling “arbitrarily and unjustly” cast aside the historic understanding of marriage, which “has been recognized as the union of one man and one woman for more than 2,000 years.” Idaho Republican State Rep. Tony Wisniewski sponsored the memorial. He said supporters oppose “the debasing of the term of marriage to that of something that is abhorrent to many of us.” The memorial also points to Idaho voters' earlier decision on the issue. In 2006, 63% of voters approved Amendment 2, which added language to the state Constitution defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Supporters argue the Supreme Court brushed aside that vote when it issued the Obergefell ruling. The resolution also states the decision “may have been illegitimately adjudicated” because two justices in the majority, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan, had previously officiated homosexual weddings and did not recuse themselves. The memorial now moves to the Idaho Senate. The governor does not play a role because joint memorials do not require a signature. “Educated for Liberty” film urges Christian parents to wake up And finally, the rise of government-controlled schools and secular education has produced a decline of moral and academic excellence, which has led to a loss of liberty, reports The Providence Foundation. Schools have become progressively dangerous. Some of the most negative influences that young Americans can face today are found in public schools. Exposure to drugs, assault, rape, and murder are becoming more and more common. Radical transgender and homosexual ideology is promoted in classrooms, and reinforced by biological males having access to girls' restrooms and being allowed to compete in girls' sports. Well, there's a new Christian documentary out entitled Educated for Liberty. It urges Christian parents to pull their kids out of public schools and homeschool them or place them in private Christian schools instead. DAVID BARTON: “If you can't think biblically, then what you have is a bunch of secular-thinking people who attend church which will never change a community in the right direction.” RHONDA THOMAS: “We're not, as a church, raising up parents that understand their responsibility in the education of their children.” CAROL SWAIN: “Sunday School is fine. It's good. Vacation Bible School: Fine and good, but it's not enough.” CAROLE ADAMS: “Education is discipleship -- one way or another. Discipling our children in a secularized society, or it's discipling them to Christ.” CASEY GORDON: “How could you possibly segregate the concept of education from the duty and responsibility of the Christian faith, and that they should be trained in the Christian faith and in a Christian way?” ALEX NEWMAN: “For hundreds of years in this country, the Bible was the essential book. It was the foundation of everything. And yet, here we are where it's actually controversial that we should have the Bible in education. It's truly astounding.” MRS. SAM SORBO: “Give your children the Bible, and you give them an understanding of God, which is education. Then the world will become clear to them, and they'll be world changers.” Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Watch the film, Educated for Liberty, for free through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Clay's favorite guest, Dr. Lindsay Chervinsky, makes her first 2026 appearance to discuss foreign policy in the administrations of George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. America's recent incursion into the sovereign nation of Venezuela raises questions about the war powers in America. The Founding Fathers were adamant that Congress (not the executive) must initiate wars, and vote funds to pay for them, too. We discuss the crisis of the French Revolution in America, Washington's famous Farewell Address in 1796, the Quasi-War with France during the John Adams administration, and Adams' heroic decision to seek peace rather than war with the French Republic. We explore Jefferson's idealism as voiced in a letter he wrote in 1799 and his famous First Inaugural Address in 1801. Jefferson believed it was too late in the world's history to solve our disputes through bloodshed, and yet he sent marines and a naval squadron to North Africa to bloody the nose of the Pasha of Tripoli. This episode was recorded on January 5, 2026.

HEZBOLLAH'S SURVIVAL AND THE LOSS OF REGIONAL LIFELINES Colleague David Daoud. David Daoud characterizes Hezbollah as an ideological extension of Iran currently in survival mode as its lifelines in Syria and Venezuela weaken. While Hezbollah wants the regime to survive for power projection, Daoud suggests Iraqi militias are more likely to be physically assisting Tehran's crackdowns due to their proximity and lower combat losses compared to Hezbollah. To clarify the current state of the Iranian government, Jonathan Sai uses the metaphor of a "zombie regime": it may appear to be moving and in control, but it is functionally dead because it can no longer sustain its support base or provide basic necessities for its people.
