This is the Bowyer’s Podcast, part of the Okayest Podcast Network with your host Matthew Morris, amateur bowyer, fairly average traditional bowhunter, and lifelong student of the outdoors. Kick back and enjoy discussions with primitive skills experts, artisans, and outdoorsmen as we explore the revival of old ways in our ever-moderning world.
In this episode, we sit down with Mike Roberts of Sauk Trail Archery. A few years back, Mike made the leap to full-time bowmaking, continuing the family tradition and stepping into the footsteps of his father, who started the bow business years ago. Mike shares his journey—from his personal origin story and family life, to the decision to take the reins of Sauk Trail. We also dive into the lineup of bows they offer, discussing their design, performance, and best use cases for traditional archers. If you love stories of heritage, craftsmanship, and beautiful hand-built bows, this one's for you. In this episode, Matthew chats with Spencer Sutliff from Domain Outdoor LLC. The conversation kicks off with Matthew's exciting new land acquisition and his vision to create a traditional bowhunting-only hunt club. Step one in the journey? Improving flora quality to support better wildlife nutrition and give hunters a greater chance of closing the distance to their quarry. Spencer shares practical advice on establishing food plots that benefit both game animals and landowners. Whether you're a seasoned land manager or just getting started, planting a food plot with help from Domain Outdoor can greatly enhance habitat for whitetail deer and other game species. Their specialized seed blends—like Hot Chic, Comeback Kid, No BS, Overhaul, and Clutch Clover—make it easier to grow nutritious forage that works. We're proud to welcome Domain Outdoor as a show partner for 2025 and thank them for supporting our food plot efforts here at the Bowyer Podcast! In this episode, Matthew sits down with Mr. William “Willie” Pekah (Peek-ah)—a Comanche elder, lifelong educator, traditional bowyer and fletcher, and all-around fascinating human. Willie has spent over 40 years working to sustain the cultural practices of the Comanche people, while also collaborating with other Native tribes to rejuvenate traditional lifeways. His work has even taken him to Hollywood, consulting on books and films—including the hit TV series The Son, based on the novel by Philipp Meyer. Conversations like this are the reason we started this podcast: to honor the makers, preserve the traditions, and pass on the stories of those who keep the old ways alive. Ray grew up in New Mexico, but spent much of his adult life in Iowa with his wife, raising their children, and working as a tradesman for a couple of decades. In 2024, Ray and his wife made the bold decision to move to a former homestead in southern New Mexico. We all dream about, and perhaps romanticise a pivot to the simpler lifestyle….but lack the gumption to actually make the move. On this episode, Matthew sits down with a couple of new pals from the inaugural Buckskin Jamboree All-Traditional Shoot, hosted by The Archery & Bow Club (TAB) in Grey Court, South Carolina. TAB Archery Club hosts archery events. The club is part of the South Carolina Archery Association (SCAA) and Western Carolina Archery Circuit (WCAC). TAB is an all-archery club, but decided to bring back some of their traditional heritage with an all-traditional archery shootout, which included a 20+ target 3D shoot, clinics on wellness, bow making, and hunting from a tree saddle. If you're new to traditional archery, I encourage you to reach out to your local trad archery club and introduce yourself. Odds are there are some seasoned archers that are more than willing to show you a thing or two. Worst case, you make some new friends. Get outside. Get dirty, and try to learn something new. Today I had the honor of sitting down with Mr. Fred Eichler to discuss bowhunting, stewardship, and even touch on Fred's contributions to modern recurve bow and trad equipment designs. His passion for bowhunting has taken him all over the world in pursuit of his next adventure, whether it's hunting brown bears in Alaska, pronghorn antelope in Colorado, or coyotes on neighboring farms. Fred truly believes that any animal with a bow is a trophy, which I personally appreciate. His personal quest to complete the North American Super Slam with a recurve bow reflects that state of mind. In mid August of 2009 Fred harvested a cow Tule Elk to become the first to take all 29 North American big game animals with a recurve bow and complete the Super Slam. Fred has been fortunate enough to share his love and enthusiasm of the sport with fellow bowhunters across the country through his television shows and personal appearances. If you ever run across Fred in the woods or at your local bow shop you'll be greeted with a big smile and friendly handshake. Bowhunting is more than a passion for him, it's a way of life. On this episode I sit down with the Ranch Fairy himself, Troy Fowler. For those that know of Troy, they know he has a big personality, a goofy laugh, and takes arrow dynamics pretty seriously. We discuss arrow tuning, setups, go on a few tangents about fishing, and segway into the teachings of Dr. Ed Ashby, who has been a mentor of Troy's for many years. In this episode I sit down with Trent Wengerd, of Wengerd Archery. As crazy as it sounds, Trent started making bows at the young age of 12 years old! While his first models may not have been anything to write home about (Trent's words), who else can say they started this craft at such a young age? Nowadays, the bows that come from Wengerd are arguably some of the best in the business. In addition, Trent is a talented craftsman and wood worker, family man, and spends much of his time hunting big game in the Rocky Mountains of the American West. While the intent was to dive deeply into the inner workings of Wengerd Archery, we spent much of our time chatting about hunting and hearing about an epic mountain goat hunt that Trent had with his son. I'm also joined by fellow bowyer and pal Peyton Owens, who filled the role of co-host on the episode. I look forward to having Trent on the show again in the coming months and diving deeper into the amazing bows that come from the Wengerd Archery shop. On this episode I sit down with my two pals Chris Guiadiz and repeat guest James Wood. Both of these guys are avid traditional bowhunters, but reside in completely different sides of the country. But alas, the welcoming world of traditional archery provided a good platform to these two guys to partake in fellowship and a little hunting as they tried their best to harvest a variety of invasive species on the Hawaiian Islands.Follow along for a hunt recap. Today I sat down with master story-teller and traditional bowhunting legend Monty Browning. Monty grew up in the Carolinas and has worked as a tree topper for over 50 years. Because those occupational hazards aren't enough, he has spent many a decade running around places like Alaska, Australia, Africa, and the Amazon chasing all sorts of dangerous game with the simple stick and string — and at times with a selfbow! We discuss how Monty met his wife of over 50 years now, Ms. Annie and their unbreakable bond. And like any good mentor, Monty has dedicated years of his life in mentoring our youth via Church events, and traditional clubs such as PBS and Compton Traditional Bowhunters. Lastly, we liberally sprinkle in some good hunting stories. You don't want to miss this one. Find Monty's amazing books: https://www.montybrowningbook.com/book

Hit songwriter Andrew Scott Wills has been enamored with American history since he was a boy. As a teenager he discovered Eckert's "The Frontiersman" and built his first CVA Kentucky long rifle. Around the same time he bought a junk guitar for $20 and started songwriting. Despite a successful career of songwriting on Nashville's Music Row, notching Billboard charting singles and hundreds of recordings, Wills felt the frontier calling. Hawken Horse was born. The music of Hawken Horse shines a lantern on the romance and ruggedness of frontier history with inspiring lyrics that spark an inner yearning for discovery, independence, and Survival.
