The Small Business Association of Michigan’s Small Business Weekly Podcast
On today's SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Kalyan Rachakonda, owner of Transworld Business Advisors of Sterling Heights. He's a VIP member of the Small Business Association of Michigan. The firm helps business owners sell their businesses confidentially and at the best valuation, while also assisting buyers. Rachakonda says that despite economic uncertainty, deals are still happening, and financing is available, including SBA loans and seller financing, although lenders may be more selective. Planning to sell your business? He emphasizes that business owners should plan for an exit several years in advance, ideally three, to maximize returns and manage the process smoothly. The Small Business Association of Michigan is the only statewide and state-based association that focuses solely on serving the needs of Michigan's small business community. We have been successfully serving small businesses like yours in all 83 counties of Michigan since 1969. We're located in Lansing, just one block from the Capitol. Our mission is to help Michigan small businesses succeed by promoting entrepreneurship, leveraging buying power and engaging in political advocacy. When small businesses band together through the Small Business Association of Michigan, they achieve more than they could on their own. Our 32,000 members are as diverse as Michigan's economy. From accountants to appliance stores, manufacturers to medical, and restaurants to retailers, what unites the SBAM membership is the spirit of entrepreneurship…a spirit that drove you to start and continue to operate your own business because you believe you can do something better than anyone else is doing it! Greg McArthur's journey in manufacturing began as a child sweeping floors and cleaning mats in his father's machine shop. Over the years, he gained hands-on experience, evolving from a lathe hand to a skilled CNC machinist, estimator, and engineer. Eventually, Greg took a bold leap, bidding on a machine sight unseen on eBay and figuring out how to transport and operate it—foreshadowing his entrepreneurial spirit. In 2017, Greg founded NTL Industries in his garage while working a full-time job. By carefully building a financial foundation, he transitioned to renting a facility, leasing machines, and growing a team. Today, NTL Industries is a full-service CNC precision machining shop in Sterling Heights, MI, specializing in defense, aerospace, agriculture, and automation. The company has grown to 11 employees and is moving into a state-of-the-art, 13,000-square-foot facility that reflects its ambitious trajectory. From the beginning, Greg recognized the power of social media as a cornerstone of NTL's growth. He embraced platforms like LinkedIn to build a following, share exceptional work, and attract new clients. Greg's mantra is clear: if you're not promoting yourself every day, you're missing opportunities. By leveraging social media as a free marketing tool, NTL has gained exposure, received RFQs, and established a reputation for excellence. In this episode, Greg shares his story, insights on growing a machine shop, and advice for young entrepreneurs in manufacturing. Whether it's navigating an economic downturn, diversifying into new markets, or overcoming challenges like labor shortages, Greg's practical wisdom is a must-hear for anyone looking to grow their business. Maureen Electa Monte and I go ... way back! When she was an engineer, and doing photography, she photographed our first Portraits of cystic fibrosis black and white calendar in 2003. The wives of the Detroit Tigers, pretty much all of them pregnant, played in our first celebrity softball game. They played against law enforcement at a ballpark in Sterling Heights. Years ago when she was working at IBM she was the Engineer of the Year, she was a multi-sport athlete and MVP of her basketball team.Since then, Maureen has grown her personal brand and is an author. Her first book, Destination Unstoppable is fabulous. It teaches the reader how to be a successful team player. As Maureen knows, as I have told her for years, if she could get in a room with the Detroit Lions, they would get to the Super Bowl, and win. Her next book Win like a Girl, is where she talks about the framework needed to help coaches and parents develop powerful girls who overcome adversity and expand their comfort zone. The book itself, and the message or powerful and empowering to everyone. It relates to the CF world too. As parents, and persons with CF, we must always advocate for ourselves, and the ones we love. Gene mutations is becoming a hot topic today, especially the MTHFR gene break. So many people are living with health issues, such as depression, anxiety, ADD or even addiction, with the very likely possibility that it could be caused by a gene break. In this week's episode, I am joined by my doctor and friend, Dr. Nick, to chat all about gene mutations. We dive into the specific gene mutations MTHFR, MTRR, and COMT, why they are important, signs that you may have the break, how to support your body if you have them and more! This is such an educational episode and feel that not only should everyone understand the concept behind gene breaks, but I believe everyone should test for them in their life because you truly don't know what an impact it could be making on your life and how you can easily support your body knowing you have it.A little bit about Dr. Nick:Dr. Nick grew up in Sterling Heights, MI where he received his undergraduate from the University of Detroit Mercy in Biology. Growing up he always knew he wanted to dedicate his life to educating people on what true health and healing really is. While pursuing a masters degree in biomedical sciences at Wayne State University he learned that the United States consumes 60% of the world's drugs yet we rank 37th out of the 39 industrialized countries in terms of the health of the population. There are 25 million pills consumed in every hour of every day. This was a huge eye opener for him! Every class period he was bombarded with these kinds of statistics and complications people could experience if they took these different types of medications. He realized that there is a time and place for drugs and realized that you cannot produce health by taking pills to treat disease because this does not address the core issue and what's really going on, it's simply masking a problem. He wanted to study health and how to create it rather than study disease and how to treat it. This is how he discovered Chiropractic. He then moved to Marietta, GA where he completed his four years in the Doctor of Chiropractic Program at Life University. During his time he was certified in two of the most advanced upper cervical techniques in chiropractic known as the Atlas Orthogonal & the Pierce Results System. These techniques use a cutting edge analysis and technology to deliver chiropractic in a scientific and reproducible manner with none of the twisting, cracking, or popping noises.Connect with Dr. Nick:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theatlasdocFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/NextGenChiropractic/Website - https://www.nextgenchiropractic.net/about-dr-nickContact - (586) 209-4236Sponsors:Toxic Free CleaningUse code BROOKE30 to save 30%https://trulyfreehome.comGrassfed Beef ProteinUse code BROOKEBACCI to save 15%https://equipfoods.com/brookebacciWeNatal Prenatal -Get a FREE Omega DHA+ with a purchase of a WeNatal supplementhttps://wenatal.com/pages/partner?sscid=11k8_l9yzt&Lumebox - Red Light / Infrared Therapy DeviceUse link below get it about half off ($280 value)https://thelumebox.com/pages/lb68/?_ef_transaction_id=&oid=3&affid=1008&discount=brookebacciOrganic Herbal RemediesUse Code BROOKE10 to save 10%
