“It's someone's 50th wedding anniversary. They're celebrating a new baby. We've had surprise engagements. We've had people mourning the loss of someone they loved. Every human emotion and experience you can imagine is being shared around this table. And I feel it is this huge responsibility we have to care for that, to nurture it. To create lifelong memories for our guests.” We're in great company with Sherry Villanueva, Founder and Managing Partner of ACME Hospitality celebrating 10 years of creating happiness for her guests and teams alike, with innovative food & beverage concepts and boutique hotels sprinkled around California.  Over this time, Sherry has curated a village of hospitality loving hosts, gastro-geeks, delightful diners and ravenous regulars throughout Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, the Sierra Nevada Foothills and soon San Juan Capistrano.  In this episode, Sherry delves into the deep connection she has with her two historic hotels in California's Gold Country, the National Exchange Hotel in Nevada City and the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley, lovingly restored by local artists, designers and craftspeople. Listen as she invites us all to experience 165 years of history and welcome a change in the seasons, as we say goodbye to our Indian summer and hello to a warm festive winter.  Top Takeaways [1:45] Sherry spent a career traveling the world tracking trends, learning a lot about human behavior before founding ACME Hospitality for “people passionate about caring for people.” [6:40] The moment the stars aligned for Sherry happened to be in her own backyard of Santa Barbara, CA when she was tapped to revitalize a neighborhood called “The Funk Zone.” [10:30] A look back at 10 years of ACME Hospitality includes lots of laughs, a lot of tears, and learning “how to pace and embrace the chaos.”   [13:20] Get to know Santa Barbara's culinary scene with ACME Hospitality through The Lark, the restaurant that started it all, Loquita, serving authentic Spanish tapas, La Paloma Cafe, celebrating Santa Maria traditions, The Helena Avenue Bakery, where everything is scratch-made, Lucky Penny, spinning out wood-fired pizzas, Tyger Tyger, with its vegan Thai cuisine, Santa Barbara Wine Collective, a tasting room featuring small family run wineries, and Pearl Social, a music and cocktail lounge. [18:20] When Sherry set off to restore two historical boutique hotels in California's Gold Country, she wanted to ensure a deep sense of community - stewarding culturally significant properties, supporting local purveyors, investing in local non-profits, and connecting to nature.  [26:35] The National Exchange Hotel with its Victorian era spirit, is full of rich colors and patterns, opulent furnishings, lovingly restored original features, and mysterious details around every corner that continue to surprise guests as they explore further. [33:40] Sherry explains how two towns such as Nevada City and Grass Valley, which may be just minutes apart, can feel worlds away. Nevada City, full of true craftsmen, sets the scene for a Hallmark movie, while Grass Valley with its rugged edge, is the heart and grit that built the industry. [38:40] The Holbrooke Hotel, where modern luxuries blend seamlessly with a historically unique, rustic-yet-refined, one-of-a-kind property, features the oldest saloon in California serving patrons for over 165 years. [48:00] Since opening another boutique hotel, Azure Sky in Palm Springs, Sherry is setting her sights on San Juan Capistrano, with another hotel and two restaurants opening soon. Starting any business requires your energy, enthusiasm, and passion for the space, but to catalyze its success, you also need a mission, vision, and business plan. Our next guest, Sherry Villanueva, was a first-time hospitality entrepreneur, but with a focused vision and mission, she's been able to successfully grow a multifaceted restaurant and hotel company. The mission is simple: Make people happy.   Sherry is the founder and managing partner of Acme Hospitality and proudly serves as the owner and operator of an innovative collection of restaurants and historic hotels. If you've spent any time in Santa Barbara, we guarantee you've eaten, sipped on a fun cocktail, or enjoyed a glass of wine (or some combination of the three) at one of her spots like Loquita, The Lark, Santa Barbara Wine Collective, La Paloma Cafe, Lucky Penny, Helena Ave Bakery, and numerous others.    With over a decade in the business, Sherry and her team diversified their portfolio several years back, started Acme Lodging, and have since opened historic properties in Grass Valley, Nevada City, and the newly opened 1950's mid-century modern Palm Springs hotel, Azure Sky.   Sherry discusses helping pioneer Santa Barbara's Funk Zone, gives us a look into her creative process, and foreshadows what we can expect from her and her team in the years to come.   For more info on Acme Hospitality: https://bit.ly/42tmIUk     Follow Acme Hospitality on Instagram: https://bit.ly/43rUMSg     Follow On The Pass on Instagram: http://bit.ly/3Kvgm1n     Follow our Host, Gabriel Ornelas: http://bit.ly/3YS964b     Check out On The Pass website: https://bit.ly/3J2PPXP     Read Gabriel's Articles: http://bit.ly/3SnOsGG     Lets work together! ***This very special episode is dedicated in the loving memory of Singer-Songwriter and a pillar of Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie, who sadly passed on November 30, 2022. We celebrate her life through the music played in this episode. My very special guests today are Artist Larry Vigon & Silo118 Gallery Owner Bonnie, Rubenstein to discuss “MADONNA and BUNNY and FRIENDS” - A Holiday Exhibit About Larry - Larry Vigon is an award-winning art director and designer who is credited for some of the most iconic album covers from the '70s and '80s. He has designed over 200 albums and single sleeves for Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Counting Crows, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Chicago, Pat Benatar, Carol King, Sparks, Boney James, Thomas Dolby, and many more. But he is equally known for his works with some of the greatest photographers of the late 20th century including Helmut Newton, George Hurrell, Joyce Tenneson, William Claxton, Peter Beard, and others. His paintings are in private collections all over the world. Larry's first book in 2006 DREAM A Journal was published by W.W. Norton, New York. Larry Vigon's new 2-volume set of books is a collection of over 50 years of creativity, carefully curated and laid out in a presentation that stuns the senses and delights the eyes. Serious Play - Art Direction & Design by Larry Vigon
Design: Larry Vigon & Cynthia Burt
Photography by Bill Dewey By Palman Publishing www.seriousplay-book.com www.larryvigon.com About Silo118.com Silo118 art gallery got its start in 2016 on the ground floor of a historic feeder silo in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone.  The silo was built in the late 1940s to supply flour for the Weber Bread factory which was in business from the late 1940s through the mid-1970s. After the bread factory shut down, the silo lay empty for decades, until it was refurbished (somewhat) in the early 2000s. In 2016 Bonnie Rubenstein was given the opportunity to run an art gallery and moved from the east coast. She called it Silo118 for the obvious reasons - reflecting both the iconic grain silo in the middle of a town and the address on the street where the silo lives. In 2018 the online version of Silo118 became the sole entity of the gallery until November 2021, when Rubenstein re-opened the brick-and-mortar in the same iconic silo with new and familiar artists and a Kids' Corner. Silo118 Presents: “MADONNA and BUNNY and FRIENDS” - A Holiday Exhibit December 1, 2022, through January 14, 2023 Reception is THIS SATURDAY - December 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Santa Cruz-born Neil Erickson is everywhere in Santa Barbara. The singer-songwriter regularly plays sets at concert venues all over town, including SOhO, Topa Topa, Sandbar, Foxtail Kitchen, The Blue Owll and James Joyce. He recently opened for American Idol superstar Jackson Gilles at concert at SOhO. In this podcast, Erickson talks about how he decided to focus on his musical dreams after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He was on track to major in journalism at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, but couldn't see himself spending his final two years of college in a Zoom setting. "After doing two years at City College, I didn't want to do two years of a four-year online," Erickson said. "I just didn't like the online and that experience that I had. It wasn't for me. It didn't work out for me." So he opted to pursue his music. His dad bought him a computer with software so that he could create, edit and produce his music. Around that time he contracted COVID-19. "I was trapped inside for 10 days," Erickson said. "Instead of playing video games, or zoning out and watching Netflix, everyday I just like wokeup and recorded and made something." With a classically trained voice in choir, passion for musical theature, Erickson focuses much of his music on love songs. Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and John Mayer are among his musical inspirations. In this podcast he walks us through the creation of one of his biggest songs, "Better With You." He has spent many days and nights walking Santa Barbara's Funk Zone, meeting managers to get booked. His sticktuitiveness has landed him many gigs, and he is not one of Santa Barbara's most sought-after local performers. "I feel that Santa Barbara is a bubble of musicians that is about to burst," Erickson said. "I have met an incredible amount of talented musicians. It's actually unreal, how many great musicians and how many people are passionate about it Santa Barbara. The former sports editor of the Santa Barbara City College said he might return to college one day, but right now he's focused on his musical career. "I want to live in Santa Barbara and make music here, and make the best possible music that I can," Erickson said. "The biggest thing for me is can I make music, do what I love and support myself. That question has been answered for me, yes I can do it. But the biggest thing, one, the goal is to make the best music I possibly can. That's the biggest thing. And two, I want to tour. There's so much of the U.S. that I haven't seen." Josh Molina has been a journalist in Santa Barbara for 20 years. He also covered City Hall for the San Jose Mercury News. Jack Dyer was present for the craft beer boom in the San Diego area in the 1990s and it left him with an unquenchable thirst to join the ranks of the top brewers. He now has five taprooms and hundreds of outlets and thousands of devoted customers of his distinct IPAs and lagers. He is also a big believer in building community and puts skin in the game with the 1 Percent For the Planet, supporting the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy among other programs and projects. Dyer, inspired by Yvon Chouinard's approach to business as chronicled in "Let My People Surf," ended up opening his first taproom next to Patagonia's headquarters in Ventura. He has since opened a bustling space in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone and the crown jewel of his empire, Topa Topa's Taproom in downtown Ojai at the intersection of South Montgomery and Ojai Avenue, which faces the eponymous Chief Peak as well as the Topa Topa bluff's Pink Moment. We structure the conversation as an orientation talk for a new staffer, and it works. Lots of great information and inspiration. She wanted to dress everyone in Santa Barbara and she's accomplishing that in the new location that now offers menswear. When you shop with Erica, not only do you feel special, but you feel heard. She's like a close friend behind the counter, guiding clients in their search for style, and encouraging confidence in every fitting.
