In which the Curmudgeons end their epic series of odes to the music of a nine-year period that transformed everything--and then some--in popular music. By 1972, the hangover from the revolutionary vibes of the 1960s had subsided, and that era's outgrowth of freedom and experimentation truly started to blossom. The Rolling Stones filtered American roots music through a dirty, sweaty prism to create a true rock masterpiece. David Bowie perfected glam rock and intergalactic theater to create a masterpiece of his own. And Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Curtis Mayfield set Black music on a wilder, more lush course. We explore all of that and much more during this episode. Enjoy all the great music of 1972 on our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/22v1Gg8aZWlUaGrBHqaZ0B?si=446b89de0580497d Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode. In which The Curmudgeons stand up to the man and deliver the best of the best of a special era for both cinema and music, when African-Americans anti-heroes lit up the screens and imaginations of a generation of young Black people. And also young Black artists, who cranked out stunning funk, soul and disco anthems to accompany these films. Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and The Staple Singers were among the legends who contributed to this electrifying canon. We enter our wayback machine and revisit some of the best Black music of its time. AGENDA New Business Discuss the legacy and format changes of Dad Bod Rap Pod and what podcasting is really like. Discuss how to keep up with prolific artist releases and aggressive schedules. DANS RULES Don't feel obligated-Release yourself from the idea that you NEED to catch every release. Check in when you have the time or interest and catch up. You are not late. Use social media-One of the few things made better by social media is the ability to follow your favorite artists and be up to date on their release schedules. Any artist who is prolific is going to make a schedule and keep their fans informed about the timing of the next project and any additional goodies for the last one. All you have to do is check your feed. Engage in a community-find likeminded folks who enjoy the music you enjoy. Forget the kinship of community, this is extra eyes and ears to listen to the music you haven't yet. If a reliable friend says the new album from artist X is not good bump it down your list. If they suggest someone you've never heard and you trust their ears, put that artist on your list. Cut out all your hate listening-Nothing good comes of listening to an album as research to argue against it. Anyone you would go and argue with is going to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth anyway. Running to hate listen the new Kanye will aggravate you and make him money. I haven't listened to new Kanye or Eminem or many others in years. I use that time giving my ears new voices. Enforce listening standards-Drake put out some bad albums in a row. He fell down my list. Now I only listen to new Drake if my people tell me I need to. That's not a Drake standard that goes for anyone. If you are on a great run of projects I will preorder happily. If you haven't been good in a while I'm gonna let the reviews roll in before I engage. Always follow your instincts-If you listen to UGK on a whim and it makes you listen to a bunch of Willie Hutch don't force yourself out of that groove to catch up on new releases. Add those new releases to your library and come to them later. Hutch yourself silly. It is important to press play on an album when your ready for it. The right music for the right time. Schoolboy Q might be better in the afternoon than the morning. The experience of music has a lot of Feng Shui in it. ACTION ITEMS How much is too much music? Can you think of examples of artists who became prolific and did it well or became prolific and slipped out of your interest?

Listening note: Zencastr fucked up Harry's track at the start of Cody's Noteys. It was a fun round, so I elected to keep the episode going and truncate Harry's track where I could. Sorry for the poor listening experience. Produced by Motown founder Berry Gordy, THE LAST DRAGON is a genre mashup of kung fu, blaxploitation, and comedy that clings to its Hero's Journey trappings only long enough to get a great joke or scene out of it. Leroy seeks the Final Level – a mystical unknowing of the self – while beset by the baddest martial artists in Harlem and distracted by the prettiest girls on TV. It's badass, it's goofy, it doesn't really work, and it doesn't really have to. Follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/trylovepodcast and email us at trylovepodcast@gmail.com to get in touch! In June of 1987, 24 year-old Carrie McDowell—the second white female artist signed to Motown Records—walked the stage of the legendary music show "Soul Train," and rocked the house with a performance of her first and only single, the controversial "Uh Uh No No Casual Sex." For McDowell, it was no daunting task, as she was already a seasoned entertainer by then.Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Carrie was a musical child prodigy destined to sing. At age 3, she could carry a note and embody the feelings of classic melodies from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. By the time she was 10, Carrie went from showcasing her talent at local venues to dazzling the Vegas crowds alongside Liberace, George Burns, and comedy duo Rowan & Martin, and drawing standing ovations at the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. After her parents' divorce and poor management curtailed her early career, Carrie got her second wind by experimenting with musical styles, and embracing new opportunities with legendary Motown producer Willie Hutch, who introduced her to a song that, despite its lyrics, was part of a serious conversation society was having in the late 80s.Show TracklistingStella by Starlight - From the movie "The Uninvited" (Liberace)Over The Rainbow (Carrie McDowell)Top of The World - Carpenters Cover Live at the Tonight Show (Carrie McDowell)I'll Be There (Jackson 5)Uh Uh, No No Casual Sex (Carrie McDowell)Let's Wait Awhile (Janet Jackson)Can't Love You Tonight (Gwen Guthrie)Carrie McDowell on Social Media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carriemcdowellmusic/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CarrieMcDowellMusicTwitter: https://twitter.com/carriemcmusicHost and Producer: Diego MartinezExecutive Producer: Nicholas "NickFresh" PuzoAudio Engineer: Adam Fogel Follow us on social media: @choonspodSubscribe to our PATREON: patreon.com/choonspod

The nephew of R&B singer Willie Hutch, Gregory Fernan Hutchinson is better known as rapper Cold 187um, leader of the early-'90s hip-hop crew Above the Law who later found a second career in 2012 when signed with the Insane Clown Posse's Psychopathic label. With Above the Law, the rapper found himself at the heart of the post-N.W.A explosion of California gangsta rap, beginning with their 1990 debut Livin' Like Hustlers and remaining successful throughout the decade. Cold 187um closed the '90s with his first solo album, 1999's Executive Decisions, which was released on West World Records, the label that would also release his 2004 effort Live from the Ghetto and 2008's Fresh Out the Pen. His affiliation with ICP began in 2002 when he appeared on the duo's album The Wraith: Shangri-La. He toured with ICP in 2011 and in 2012 announced he was signing to their label. Now taking on the nickname "the Psychopathic Assassin," Cold 187um released the concept album The Only Solution on Psychopathic in 2012. ~ David Jeffries
As broadcast October 21, 2021 with plenty of super high for the podcast superflies. We mark today in 1972, when the definition of "cinematic soul" went to #1 on the Billboard albums chart, as Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" surely was, is, and shall be. We also rocked some early 70's from Willie Hutch, Isaac Hayes, and Syl Johnson for the rest of part 1. For part 2 we got to the new stuff just out, with Neal Francis, The Teskey Brothers, L'eclair, and Bobby Oroza all out with new joints. For our 2nd half, Dan Lloyd right as rain is back but this week with slim pickings in the rock world, we decided to look over some bands that have fallen off through the years, some of them without a decent track for over a decade...and we of course riffed on why that might be.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Curtis Mayfield – SuperflyWillie Hutch – Brothers Gonna Work It OutCharles Bradley & Menahan Street Band – Trouble In The LandSyl Johnson – Is It Because I'm BlackIsaac Hayes – Walk On By (ext vers) Part II (35:55)The Teskey Brothers feat Orchestra Victoria – So Caught Up (Live at Hamer Hall)Neal Francis – PrometheusMicah Edwards – Girl From The ValleyBobby Oroza feat Cold Diamond & Mink – So Caught UpEl Michels Affair – Messy GrassL'éclair – Cosmologies Pt. 1 Part III (65:48)Offspring – All I WantSmash Mouth – Diggin' Your SceneGreen Day – Armatage ShanksU2 – Where The Streets Have No NameSleater-Kinney – OhRamones – Cretin Hop Part IV (98:44)Foo Fighters – All My LifeMastodon – The Wolf Is LooseDandy Warhols – Every Day Should Be A HolidayBeck – Nicotine & GravyMumford & Sons – The Cave
