We have the privilege of having with us today, Supervisor Susan Gorin, who has represented the First District on the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors for the past 12 years. Supervisor Gorin decided early on that she would not be running for re-election to a fifth term in office but would instead be retiring at the end of this month. So, we are so honored to have her here today to look back on the many highs and a few lows of her time in office.

During his time as Hilton CEO, Nassetta has more than doubled Hilton's global room. Number two is Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, who has helped change how many people travel around the world. And just behind Chesky is United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby, the driving force behind the Chicago-based carrier being one of the U.S.' most profitable airlines.  Next, both Marriott and Hilton recently reached milestones in terms of portfolio growth. What company is leading the hotel growth race though? Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill delves into the matter. Hilton and Accor have seen their property counts increase by at least 6% in the past five years. Meanwhile, Hyatt registered a 25% growth spurt although O'Neill notes it was a jump from a significantly smaller base. As for room count, Hyatt was the largest gainer, recording a roughly 16% increase in the last five years.  Finally, Expedia Group CEO Ariane Gorin has defended its $25 billion B2B business, arguing it isn't diluting the company's consumer businesses, writes Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. Gorin said at a recent investor conference that the B2B business is “incremental” to Expedia's consumer businesses — including Expedia.com, Hotels.com and Vrbo. Episode Notes Google is going deeper into the AI-powered trip planning world. The tech giant is adding itinerary-building capabilities on Gemini Advanced, its paid generative AI chatbot, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes. Google Vice President Sissie Hsiao said Gemini Advanced can create a personalized vacation plan using multiple sources of information. The trip-planning capability is coming to Gemini Advanced this summer. In addition, Google is also boosting trip-planning options for AI Overviews, the AI feature it released earlier this year.  Next, Ariane Gorin took over as CEO of Expedia Group this week. She explained what she's looking to accomplish during an interview with Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. Gorin said that organic growth is one of her priorities, having recently completed a tech migration that brought together several of its brands onto one platform. She added Expedia is focused on growing internationally, but will take a measured approach in doing so.  Gorin added Expedia needs to make improvements to its vacation-rental brand Vrbo. Expedia recently trimmed its 2024 outlook growth mainly due to Vrbo's slower-than-anticipated recovery.  Finally, Qantas is pulling out of mainland China as it increasingly faces fierce competition from local carriers, writes Airlines Reporter Gordon Smith. Australia's flag carrier is citing “low demand” as the reason it will no longer fly from Sydney to Shanghai starting on July 28. Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said flights between the two cities have often been half full since the company relaunched service following the pandemic. Meanwhile, Chinese carriers operate 102 flights weekly between mainland China and Australia's three largest cities.

Sedona Miller was a well-to-do woman from Gorin, Missouri. She married Theodore Carlton Schnebly, or T.C. as he was commonly called, on Feb. 20, 1897. They moved to what would later be named Sedona in 1899. At the time there were only a few families homesteading in the red rocks region.  The story goes that T.C., who was the first postmaster of the area, applied to have it named either Oak Creek Crossing or Schnebly Station. But the names were rejected by the postmaster general for being too long.  The brother of T.C., Dorsey Ellsworth, suggested the community be named Sedona, after the beloved woman who made an impression on the surrounding families. Today's segment in the Great Baritones division of my Listeners' Favorites series is introduced by my friend, baritone Jeremy Osborne, like me an American expat in Berlin. In the nearly ten years that I have known him, Jeremy has developed into a fine singer of both opera and art song. Through talent, determination, and hard work, Jeremy is forging a well-deserved place for himself in the music world. The singer he has chosen to introduce on this episode is the the great Ukranian-American baritone Igor Gorin (1904-1982). Jeremy shares with us the story of how he first became acquainted with Gorin's exceptional talent. and the context in which he, like me, was bowled over by the sheer beauty of his voice. If one made such ranking lists, in fact, we would probably both place him near the top of a “Most Beautiful Baritone Voices Ever” list. Gorin's is a fascinating life story, beginning in pre-Soviet Ukraine and moving back and forth from Vienna to the United States until finally, with forged documents, he emigrated to the US and became a naturalized citizen. Through a series of happy circumstances, he became one of the top US radio stars of the 1930s and 1940s and eventually appeared as well on early television broadcasts. A career in regional opera resulted, which reached its apex with starring roles at Lyric Opera of Chicago and a single appearance at the Metropolitan Opera at the age of 59. This episode features live, radio, and studio performances by Gorin in opera, operetta, Broadway, and folk and art songs over a period of nearly 40 years, including a  live late career performance of Ernest Bloch's Avodath Hakodesh, in which he returned to his cantorial roots. Episode Notes Expedia Group will have a new CEO soon. Ariane Gorin, currently president of Expedia for Business, will succeed Peter Kern starting on May 13, writes Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.   Schaal reports Gorin will also take a seat on Expedia Group's expanded board of directors, effective February 12. Expedia Group Chair Barry Diller said the company was looking for an internal candidate to succeed Kern. As president of Expedia for Business, the company's business-to-business arm, Gorin was responsible for a large portion of Expedia Group's revenue and profits. Meanwhile, Kern will continue to serve as Expedia Group's vice chairman and a member of its board.  Next, Spirit Airlines has experienced its share of struggles in recent years, including $1 billion worth of debt due next year. But CEO Ted Christie is refuting any talk the company could go bankrupt, writes Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi.  Christie expressed confidence Spirit will survive during the airline's fourth-quarter earnings call, citing steps it's taking to strengthen its finances. It recently netted $419 million in cash through selling and leasing back 25 aircraft. In addition, Spirit plans to make adjustments to its network, including reducing service to less lucrative destinations.  Finally, a spokesperson for Taylor Swift says she has bought double the carbon credits needed to offset emissions caused by her Eras Tour. However, it's uncertain if carbon credits are effective in reducing emissions, writes Airlines Reporter Maharishi.  A study from the Institute of Policy Studies found a private jet emits at least 10 times more carbon emissions than a commercial jetliner. As for carbon offsets, Maharishi notes they can include replanting trees in the rainforest or introducing energy-efficient methods to struggling communities. Commercial airlines often provide customers the opportunity to buy carbon offsets when purchasing flight tickets.  But Maharishi cites research that revealed 78% of carbon reducing emissions projects could be considered “junk.”

Maybe not...True Solar TakeawaysUnions are truly a part of our utility energy operations and construction. They bargain for good prevailing wages and benefits, and they can also get involved in energy politics. For example, utility unions largely oppose rooftop solar and will lobby for legislation and regulations that support large-scale solar (and their members). They also support legislation and regulations that disincentivizes rooftop solar. Why? Because small installation companies aren't part of the union and because they fear that rooftop solar will decrease utility solar jobs. In fact, we need both rooftop and utility solar in order to fight climate change.Likewise, coal, gas, and oil unions oppose solar because they also know that their jobs will decrease. But the clean energy writing is on the wall and their leadership understands that they will eventually need to support retraining their workers for clean energy and other industries.Energy wonks often refer to the cost of energy over time as the "Levelized Cost of Energy" or LCOE. It allows them to compare the total cost of a solar plant to, say, a gas or coal plant. Today, solar has the lowest LCOE. Milanium is an imaginary rare-earth metal. However, solar and clean energy is in great need of many rare-earth metals and not-so-are minerals. These include silicon, the base element for making solar cells for solar panels, and lithium for making rechargeable batteries. Peaker power plants are always on standby, so the cost to use them is very expensive. Utilities use speakers for backup power on hot days when more people are running their air conditioners.Solar technology is now mature and reliable. There are over 4 million solar installations in the U.S. and millions more around the world. PERC and TopCon are the current leading solar panel technologies. Perovskite solar panels haven't been commercialized yet, but they're close. Once commercialized, they will make solar panels less expensive and generate more power per square inch.Lithium-iron phosphate batteries are becoming more popular for home backup power.  However, most home batteries use Lithium-ion chemistries.The chemistry formulas for iron-air batteries are now being commercialized, allowing for affordable and long-lasting storage of solar and wind power. These batteries can provide several days' worth of stored energy, rather than just a few hours.Wind power is already an inexpensive and reliable renewable power.Geothermal energy is a promising new source of renewable energy. It harnesses heat from the Earth to create steam that powers electric turbines.
