This week we continue our Onassis saga by exploring some of the fallout within our main players after the wedding of Aristotle and Jackie. Two lovely ladies really get the shaft in this rocky time period, Lee Radziwill and Christina Onassis. Jackie's sister Lee definitely has a period of tumult with accidents and hospitalizations, but not to worry, her new lover Peter Beard will be on the scene soon enough and the two will be spending a lot of time at Grey Gardens with her relations, Big Edie Bouvier and Little Edie Bouvier.  Another gal having a tough time is Aristotle's daughter, Christina Onassis. We explore much more about her childhood and her very first love and marriage too. They are not with the same man.   Continue your investigation with ad-free and bonus episodes on Patreon! On a bright sunny day at Gilgo Beach in 1963, a 13 year old Tony Caramonico remembers paddling out and catching the white water as the wave broke behind him. The unparalleled sensation of riding his first wave ushered in a sense of purpose and destiny. Surfing would be his North Star. A lot of people were surfers at the time and life got in the way for many of them. Tony was damn hell sure  life would not get in his way.  What would follow is a life filled with enough adventure and incredible waves to fill 10 lifetimes. Surfing has been his singular obsession for over 60 years. Tony is a legend among legends. An East Coast Hall of Famer, a 2x Greg Noll Da bull invitational champion, and became a pro surfer when others his age were giving up surfing.Beyond his surfing, Tony kept journals with collages, stories, and scraps for every day for decades. These creations have become a kaleidoscopic chronicle of his search for the perfect wave, from Montauk to Hawaii, South Africa to the Caribbean, and Indonesia to Japan. Eventually Tony transitioned to a respected artist with numerous shows and prints of his work. His latest book by Damiani, 'Montauk Surf Journals' presents a stunning selection of Tony's art representing his 60 years in and around surfing. The book takes readers on Tony's journey through surfing as the world progresses through four decades of immense change. From his first wave in 1963, to living and working with Peter Beard at his home in Montauk, and endless days of perfect waves, Tony's unique, colorful visions shine through on the page.We are incredibly stoked to have Tony on as our guest for this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast. To Purchase Tony's Book, Montauk Surf Journals, go to: www.damianibooks.comYou can Follow Tony Caramanico on Instagram @TCMontaukThe Swell Season Surf Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network. For more information, you can follow @swellseasonsurfradio on Instagram or go to our website: www.swellseasonsurf.com Music: Song: Almost Cut My HairArtist: Crosby, Stills, Nash & YoungAlbum: Deja VuBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/swell-season--3483504/support.

In the meantime, standard container rates on transpacific routes are quadruple what they were a year ago. And that is before equipment surcharges and premiums for guaranteed loading are added. “Anyone paying the freight bills in 2020 though knows the true cost of shipping is much higher than even the recently increased rates,” Poskus said. “We expect that to only increase in 2021.” The unstoppable rise in container shipping costs is borne out by December figures recently announced by Taiwan's three major shipping companies — Evergreen Marine Corp, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp and Wan Hai Lines Ltd — which saw a record-breaking year-on-year surge of revenue at 58.8 percent, 35.19 percent and 75.71 percent respectively. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/01/18/2003750759 Next Article Topic: The world is dependent on Taiwan for semiconductors As China pushes the world to avoid official dealings with Taiwan, leaders across the globe are realizing just how dependent they have become on the island democracy. Taiwan is being courted for its capacity to make leading-edge computer chips. That is mostly down to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's largest foundry and go-to producer of chips for Apple Inc smartphones, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Taiwan's role in the world economy largely existed below the radar until it came to recent prominence as the auto industry suffered shortfalls in chips used for everything from parking sensors to reducing emissions. With carmakers including Germany's Volkswagen AG, Ford Motor Co of the US and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp forced to halt production and idle plants, Taiwan's importance has suddenly become too big to ignore. That is not to say Taiwan is the only player in the semiconductor supply chain. The US still holds dominant positions, notably in chip design and electronic software tools; ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands has a monopoly on the machines needed to fabricate the best chips; Japan is a key supplier of equipment, chemicals and wafers. However, as the emphasis shifts to ever smaller, more powerful chips that require less energy, TSMC is increasingly in a field of its own. It has also helped Taiwan form a comprehensive ecosystem around it: ASE Technology Holding is the world's top chip assembler, while MediaTek has become the largest smartphone chipset vendor. A big worry is that TSMC's chip factories could become collateral damage if China were to make good on threats to invade Taiwan if it moves toward independence. “Taiwan is the center of gravity of Chinese security policy,” said Mathieu Duchatel, director of the Asia program at the Institut Montaigne in Paris. Preserving the world's most advanced fabs “is in the interests of everyone.” Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/02/01/2003751534 Next Article Topic: Reinventing Workers for the Post-COVID Economy The nation's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic will hinge to some extent on how quickly show managers can become electricians, whether taxi drivers can become plumbers, and how many cooks can manage software for a bank. This is likely to prove especially problematic for millions of low-paid workers in service industries like retailing, hospitality, building maintenance and transportation, which may be permanently impaired or fundamentally transformed. What will janitors do if fewer people work in offices? What will waiters do if the urban restaurant ecosystem never recovers its density? Their prognosis is bleak. Marcela Escobari, an economist at the Brookings Institution, warns that even if the economy adds jobs as the coronavirus risk fades, “the rebound won't help the people that have been hurt the most.” Looking back over 16 years of data, Escobari finds that workers in the occupations most heavily hit since the spring will have a difficult time reinventing themselves. Taxi drivers, dancers and front-desk clerks have poor track records moving to jobs as, say, registered nurses, pipe layers or instrumentation technicians. COVID is abruptly taking out a swath of jobs that were thought to be comparatively resilient, in services that require personal contact with customers. And the jolt has landed squarely on workers with little or no education beyond high school, toiling in the low-wage service economy. “The damage to the economy and particularly to workers will probably be longer lasting than we think it is going to be,” said Peter Beard, senior vice president at the Greater Houston Partnership, an economic development group. What's more, he said, COVID will intensify underlying dynamics that were already transforming the workplace. Automation, for one, will most likely accelerate as employers seek to protect their businesses from future pandemics. The challenge is not insurmountable. Yet despite scattered success stories, moving millions of workers into new occupations remains an enormous challenge. “We need a New Deal for skills,” said Amit Sevak, president of Revature, a company that hires workers, trains them to use digital tools and helps place them in jobs. “President Roosevelt deployed the massive number of workers unemployed in the Great Depression on projects that created many of the dams and roads and bridges we have. We need something like that.”

We need something like that.” Powered by Firstory Hosting

***This very special episode is dedicated in the loving memory of Singer-Songwriter and a pillar of Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie, who sadly passed on November 30, 2022. We celebrate her life through the music played in this episode. My very special guests today are Artist Larry Vigon & Silo118 Gallery Owner Bonnie, Rubenstein to discuss “MADONNA and BUNNY and FRIENDS” - A Holiday Exhibit About Larry - Larry Vigon is an award-winning art director and designer who is credited for some of the most iconic album covers from the '70s and '80s. He has designed over 200 albums and single sleeves for Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Counting Crows, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Chicago, Pat Benatar, Carol King, Sparks, Boney James, Thomas Dolby, and many more. But he is equally known for his works with some of the greatest photographers of the late 20th century including Helmut Newton, George Hurrell, Joyce Tenneson, William Claxton, Peter Beard, and others. His paintings are in private collections all over the world. Larry's first book in 2006 DREAM A Journal was published by W.W. Norton, New York. Larry Vigon's new 2-volume set of books is a collection of over 50 years of creativity, carefully curated and laid out in a presentation that stuns the senses and delights the eyes. After the bread factory shut down, the silo lay empty for decades, until it was refurbished (somewhat) in the early 2000s. In 2016 Bonnie Rubenstein was given the opportunity to run an art gallery and moved from the east coast. She called it Silo118 for the obvious reasons - reflecting both the iconic grain silo in the middle of a town and the address on the street where the silo lives. In 2018 the online version of Silo118 became the sole entity of the gallery until November 2021, when Rubenstein re-opened the brick-and-mortar in the same iconic silo with new and familiar artists and a Kids' Corner. Silo118 Presents: “MADONNA and BUNNY and FRIENDS” - A Holiday Exhibit December 1, 2022, through January 14, 2023 Reception is THIS SATURDAY - December 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Enjoy the flow that Senegalese-born New York-based international known photographer, Delphine Diallo, releases as she liberally shares her journey of enlightenment; working as a talented graphic designer in the Parisian creative scene yet not able to get past the glass ceiling in the corporate art world. A climactic epiphany for change and a divinely orchestrated connection with the legendary Peter Beard saw her to collaborate on the Pirelli calendar shoot in Botswana. This turning point led to an awakening that saw her begin her own vision quest. Delphine describes herself as predominantly a student before a photographer, exploring realms of spirituality, science, anthropology and martial arts and shifting through the third, fourth, fifth and sixth dimensions, creating her own realities. Proud of her African origin and drawing from the power of her heritage, we hear how she engages with the energies of empowering black females and aims to accelerate levels of consciousness through her work. Known for portraiture and her focus on the black female body, Delphine is passionate about the reconstruction of the African woman and capturing the truth that is covered by the patriarchal white male gaze smokescreen that dominates the global visual language.Support the show

In episode 14 Rowan and Nick chat with New York based photographer Delphine Diallo about her life, lockdown and learning kung fu from the same teacher as Wu Tang’s RZA. Diallo left a corporate job as a graphic designer and entered the world of photography after meeting acclaimed photographer Peter Beard at a dinner party. Since then she has been an unstoppable force exhibiting her work globally and collaborating with brands such as Nike, Vogue and Converse as well as with fellow artists Shepherd Fairey and JR. In this episode we talk about Diallo's photography practice and how it has, more recently, lead to making intricate collage works. We discuss why she felt the move from her home in Paris to New York was a necessary one and why it has provided much wider scope for creative opportunities. Diallo talks passionately about her spiritual path and how that, combined with her artistic practice, has helped her to stay creative during lockdown.

Peter Tunney is a legitimate force of nature with boundless creative energy, who loves spreading positive messages in unconventional ways. After a career in finance, biotech and then nearly a decade defined by wild adventures, photo-curating and documenting travels through Africa with photographer and society fixture, Peter Beard, Tunney returned to New York in 1987 and declared himself an artist. He quickly became a central player, artist and gallerist in the legendary downtown art scene of the 80s and 90s, working with nearly every medium imaginable to create these large-scale mantras that have appeared everywhere from billboards to private collections and his own galleries in Tribeca as well as Miami’s famed Wynwood Walls. Tunney, it turns out, is not just a world-class liver of life, creator and raconteur, he believes in humankind and the good that results in endless small acts of kindness. Over the years Peter has donated countless works to deserving organizations, with his main philanthropic efforts now being criminal justice reform, supporting wrongfully convicted individuals, and ending the stigma of mental illness. In today’s free-ranging and story-driven conversation, you’ll get a powerful sense of the fierce, kinetic and creative energy that drives Peter, and also discover how an accident that nearly ended his life at the age of 13 set in motion certain events that would shape who he’d become and what he’d awaken to decades down the road. You can find Peter Tunney at:Website : https://petertunneyart.com/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/petertunney/Check out our offerings & partners: Glossier: Glossier.com/podcast/GOODLIFE - new customers can get 10% off your first order.Bambee: Bambee.com/GOODLIFE - FREE HR audit.Total Gym: TotalGymDirect.com/GOODLIFE - 30-day in-home trial for just $1 plus an ADDITIONAL 20% OFF

Iman is many things: style icon, model, actress, entrepreneur, activist. This week we take a look at her life and the stories behind each of these roles. Growing up in Somalia and Egypt, Iman never planned to be a model. Instead, she had her sights set on political science. A chance encounter with Peter Beard changed that and less than a year later Iman found herself in the pages of Vogue. But she knew modeling wasn’t the end goal – it was simply a business. She translated her success into many other ventures including Iman Cosmetics, Global Chic and countless charity and social justice roles. So inspiring! Plus in Style Snacks, we have more fashion shows and digital winners this week than last. Whether it was Miuccia’s last solo show for Prada, Loewe’s show in a box, Margiela’s (missing) documentary or Gucci’s staff lookbook, we really enjoyed this week’s presentations. The only sour note to the week, the US government is moving forward with a 25% tax on French luxury goods. I got to talk with Natalie White about how she came to NYC at 17 from Fairmont, West Virginia, without any specific plan. She met Peter Beard and soon became the muse for a lot of famous artists such as Beard, George Condo, Spencer Tunick, Sean Lennon and many more. At first, she was their inspiration and then went on to creating her own work, becoming an artist herself, with many exhibitions. White then used her boundless energy to make changes for women's rights, walking 250 miles from NYC to DC. and defacing the Capital upon her arrival. Natalie and I talk a lot about how women handle their sexual power in a way that is positive for everyone concerned. She really is a great role model in this way. We come to the conclusion together that her social power is what makes people respond to her in the long run. Delphine Diallo is a New York City-based French/Senegalese visual artist and photographer. Graduating from the Académie Charpentier School of Visual Art in Paris, she started working in the music industry as a video editor and graphic designer, yet, storytelling through portraiture seemed to be always calling her. Then, in 2008 she relocated to New York to pursue photography. Her career was boosted with a being mentored by wildlife photographer Peter Beard, a chance encounter with comedian Chris Rock that lead to working with him on the Total Blackout Tour, and a collaboration with artist Shepard Fairey on his “We The People” poster project. Delphine’s work is defined by immersing herself in the study of anthropology, mythology, religion, science, and martial arts. We recently stopped by Delphine’s Brooklyn studio to talk about her work. Make sure to visit: eastsidetheatreworks.com or etwla.com Here's the list of Chris's Photography Documentaries he recommends: Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project (2007)- “The documentary follows Tierney over the course of three years as she assembles her new body of work, a project that promises to be even more provocative than the photos that originally made her career. The film documents an incredibly tumultuous period in Tierney’s life, from her move from London to Los Angeles to having a third child at age 41. Tierney is famously reclusive and has always wanted her work to speak for itself, for her audience not to have any preconceived ideas about what motivates the photographs. As Tierney says, all of her photographs are portraits of herself.”   Peter Beard: Scrapbooks from Africa and Beyond (2007)- “Easily the most compelling and comprehensive movie ever produced about the life and work of Peter Beard, covering all aspects of his life, professional career, and personal adventures beginning in the 1960s through the 1990s. Iconic photographs of Beard s legendary past are revisited and for the first time we hear the stories about making Beard s first book End of the Game, his appearance in the underground classic Hallelujah the Hills, his fortuitous meeting with British painter Francis Bacon, his friendship with Andy Warhol and his youthful acquaintance with writer Karen Blixen. Beard s epic notebooks, bound with ink, blood, photographs, and the detritus of life on the road are matched here for the first time by his recollections of the remnants of Kenya s colonial past. Narrated by Charlotte Rampling. Additional voice over by Julia Delpy, featuring rare and never-before-seen footage of Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, John F. Kennedy, Jr., Francis Bacon and Jonas Mekas among numerous others including a collection of Beard s photographs and artwork.”   William Eggleston in the Real World (2005)-“The film reveals the deep connection between William Eggleston's personality and his work, and also reveals his parallel commitments as a musician, draftsman and videographer. The film follows Eggleston on trips to Kentucky, Los Angeles, New York and Memphis, where Eggleston lives.”   What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann (2006)-“As one of the world's preeminent photographers, Sally Mann creates artwork that challenges viewers' values and moral attitudes. Described by Time magazine as "America's greatest photographer," she first came to international prominence in 1992 with Immediate Family, a series of complex and enigmatic pictures of her three children. What Remains--Mann's recent series on the myriad aspects of death and decay--is the subject of this eponymously titled documentary. Filmed at her Virginia farm, Mann is surrounded by her husband and now-grown children, and her willingness to reveal her artistic process allows the viewer to gain exclusive entrance to her world. Never one to compromise, she reflects on her own personal feelings about mortality as she continues to examine the boundaries of contemporary art. Spanning five years, What Remains contains unbridled access to the many stages of Mann's work, and is a rare glimpse of an eloquent and brilliant artist.”   Time Zero: The Last Year of Polaroid Film (2012)- “Various photographers and employees of Polaroid recount their experiences with the company's instant film in its final year of production.”   Make sure to visit us...

It's never been clearer that now is a crucial moment for the global environment and that how we address this moment in our history will impact the future human experience on our planet, especially in the case for Africa and it's precious wildlife. Guillaume has decided the best way to communicate and bring these problems to international attention is to undertake a systematic visual record of the continent's vanishing wilderness, documenting how man is erasing 300 million years of evolution for personal gain, “Only 50 years ago man had to be protected from the beasts; today the beasts must somehow be protected from man.” These words, written back in 1965, never sounded truer than they do today. Yet when Peter Beard first expressed these concerns forty-five years ago, he would not have guessed how bad things would become for Africa's wildlife and its habitat.

This week on Here's The Thing, Alec talks with two men who have spent much of their lives living and working in Africa. Photographer Peter Beard first set foot on the continent in 1955. Richard Ruggiero, of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, began his Peace Corps stint in 1981 in the northern Central African Republic. “We are enemies of nature,” says Beard, whose photographs have documented the destruction of wildlife in Africa, including the plight of the African Elephant, the very topic of Ruggiero's doctoral dissertation. Ruggiero continues to work in Africa today and says the situation with elephant poaching right now is a “nightmare.” That says, says Ruggiero, “People are the problem, but they are also the solution.” Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
