Beyond Bottles: Exploring Alternative Packaging for Wine

Sip, share, shape our podcast!Do you think bottles are the only way to package wine? We're here to change the way you think about alternative packaging for wine!In the world of wine trends, packaging for wine may not be the sexiest, but we think there are some pretty cool things going on! We're not talking about ordinary wine storage boxes or wine shippers, we're talking about alternate packaging solutions for bringing wine directly to you, your table, and your glass.Wine boxes have been around for years. There's nothing really new about the concept, but there's more to the wine pouch in a box than meets the eye. Gone are the days of cheap party wine in a box, and hello are the days of some really great wine right on your wine shop's shelf. In this episode, we take Alileo's Grillo and Syrah to task. Gold stars all around! I'd take this for a party gift any day!As for the box concept, cardboard is lighter for packaging wine than glass wine bottles, Shipping boxes filled with wine pouch bags can fill every gap in a wine shipping container. Bottles, however, result in shipping a ton of empty space even using lightweight pulp wine shippers or other environmentally friendly wine packaging. Moving beyond wine in a box, let's talk wine in a can. Not beer, but wine! More and more winemakers are taking their custom blends and prized wines and shifting away from bottles to cans. Nomadica wines are taking custom packaging to new heights. With canned wines, 3-liter boxed wines, and more, this trend-forward brand is changing the game in wine packaging.Wine bottles aren't being left behind. While at a glance, bottles may not look different, there's a trend to reduce the weight of wine bottles. We tested this ourselves and found two different bottles of bubbles were nearly 10% different in weight! Translate that to a case, a pallet, a container, and the weight savings add up quickly. Reducing the carbon footprint in the wine industry is a hot item. Lighter wine bottles are a step in the right direction.Bottle sizes play a part in the wine packaging topic. From splits to half-bottles, Jeroboam to Midas, there are numerous options beyond the traditional 750ml. We might not be able to lift or pour wine from most of them, but we're willing to give it a try!Alternate packaging for wine is no longer a symbol of cheap, low-quality wine. Plop any of these wines in gift boxes or bags with tissue paper and gift away! Your friends will thank you!Support the Show. Thanks for joining Somm Women Talk Wine! Are you curious about the untold stories of the legendary women who helped create the Ontario wine industry and who also shaped its future? Wine might lead people to work in the wine industry, but what sustains a lifetime career beyond that? Why don't we celebrate people while they're alive, but instead wait to express those heartfelt thoughts in a eulogy, post-mortem biography or other memorials? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with author Jennifer Wilhelm. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you will win a copy of Jennifer Wilhelm's terrific new book Sharing a Glass: Inspirational Memoirs & Memories of the Women Who Shaped Ontario's Grape & Wine Industry. Three of you in Canada will win a bottle of the full-bodied, buttery-rich Chloe Chardonnay. The latter restriction relates to the cross-border shipping of alcohol and all the fun that entails. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose one person randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights How did two tables of broken wine glasses feature in Jennifer's most memorable wine moment? What was it like hosting a wine event during a hurricane? How are camaraderie and support an integral part of working in the wine industry? What was Jennifer's inspiration for writing Sharing a Glass? Why have women's stories been historically underrepresented? What was the most surprising insight that Jennifer discovered while writing Sharing a Glass? Why did Jennifer start the book by profiling Debi Pratt? What risk did Debi Pratt take in joining Inniskillin? Which creative strategies did Debi Pratt use to educate people and promote Ontario wine? How has Inniskillin honoured Debi Pratt's contributions? Who is Dr. Helen Fisher, and why did Jennifer want to feature her in the book? How did Donna Lailey's advocacy for new growing methods help to move the Ontario wine industry forward? Why was Donna Lailey named Niagara Grape King? Where did Jennifer's co-collaborator, Elena Galey-Pride, redirect her proceeds from the book? How did Dr. Linda Bramble overcome several obstacles to become a leader in the Canadian wine industry?   About Jennifer Wilhelm Jennifer Wilhelm has dedicated her career to Ontario's hospitality industry. She is a certified Sommelier, and holds credentials from WSET, Prud'homme, Hospitality Management, and Human Resources with a focus on training and development. She taught at Niagara College for 17 years and was named 2010 Ontario Wine Educator through the VQA Promoters Awards. She received a Lieutenant Governor's Community Volunteer Award for her contributions to the Ontario wine industry.   Bonus Interview - Andrea Brambila How did Andrea realize she wanted to become a winemaker? Which type of glass does Andrea recommend with full-bodied Chardonnay? Why shouldn't you judge a wine based on the first sip? For most wine drinkers, Sauvignon Blanc is THE white wine of New Zealand. We're here to debunk yet another myth and challenge you to think about NZ Chardonnay! From the focus of organic / biodynamic / regenerative farming to low intervention winemaking, winemakers let the chameleon varietal shine.  The land, the climate, even within the same vineyard is creating amazingly different expressions of Chardonnay and we're super excited to share them with you!We explore Chardonnay from Central Otago to Auckland through interviews with wineries and wine makers - this is a must listen episode for sure!Felton Road Wines, Bannockburn, Central Otago, South IslandWinemaker Blair Walter deep dives the distinct soil types even within same vineyard giving unique expression to their Chardonnay.  Passion for land as evidenced in their biodynamic farming practice leaves the true impression of care for NZ's land, - the soil just feels and smells different as if it's a living breathing organism.Te Whare Ra, Marlborough, Northern part of South IslandWinemaker Anna Flowerday who partners (with her husband,  Jason, tends some of the oldest vineyards in the region with some dainge back 20+ years or more.  Organic / Biodynamic farming, minimal intervention winemaking (no fining agents, yeasts, winemaking and small batch focus, hand pick / hand sort grapes, keep 100% control of the vineyard to bottle) add complexity to their Chardonnay. Anna shares her humor as she describes their wines by pairing them with celeb personalities which is a fun idea, but you totally get it when you listen to her tell these storiesKumeu River, Auckland, North Island and Hawke's Bay (purchased in 2017) Paul Brajkovich shares Kumeu River's history as family owned, long legacy of growing grapes and making wines back to the 1940s.CHANCE OF A LIFETIME - similar to 1976 Judgement of Paris moment, Paul shares a blind tasting where Kumeu River's Chardonnay's are placed against a range of Premier Cru and Village Burgundies from the best producers.  The panel of well known somms, wine critics and the like blinded the wines and Kumeu triumphed over top white Burgundies in every flight apart from one, where it came first equal (tied).Man O'War, Waiheke Island, part of Auckland region but distinctly separateTakes 45 min ferry to island and another 45 min bus ride to the winery on the opposite side of island and you'll find yourself at Man O' War, an enormous 4500 acre farm - about 20% of total island - full of animals, beehives, gardens, vineyards, lodging for staff etc…  plus76 vineyards!Cecelia Bravo hosts and shares how Man O' War is going against the grain with their Chardonnay! While many of NZ's Chardonnay wines don't make it to the export market, we highly encourage you to seek some out and hopefully we'll get the word out for more and more distributors to get these lovelies into the US or wherever you're listening!Cheers and, as always, LIKE, FOLLOW, SHARE!Thanks for joining Somm Women Talk Wine! As two women in the wine industry, what better topic for us to tackle than “Women in Wine”?!  Special guests include Lindsey Koch and Benedicte Rhyne who share their passion for wine and how they embraced their natural female skills and talents to make their way in the traditionally male oriented world of wine.  Meet Lindsey:  Lindsey started her career in Fort Worth, TX as a medical staffing agency before launching her own staffing company, Embracing her interest in wine she studied to become a certified Sommelier, she took the big leap of faith to start her own wine bar, WineHaus from the ground up.  After  8 years, she sold the business to a previous customer as she made the move out to Sonoma County, California to further her career in wine. Living in California Wine Country, Lindsey is currently the Estate Director for Small Vines Wines in Sebastopol, managing everything from marketing and customer outreach, to curating bespoke tasting experiences at the winery. Additionally, Lindsey and her husband always dreamed about starting their own winery and made the dream a reality, starting Curves & Edges Wines during the 2020 vintage. She focuses her efforts at Curves & Edges on two varieties that have always brought her great joy, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Meet Bénédicte: Bénédicte (Bennie) Rhyne is a native of Aix en Provence, France. She received her master in oenology (the study of wine) from the Université de Bourgogne (Dijon), had a successful experience at Chateau Pétrus, in Pomerol, Bordeaux, before global adventures to New Zealand and England landed her at Ravenswood Winery in Sonoma, California, as a member of the winemaking-team. Here she developed a”Meritage“program increasing the winery's production ten-fold between 1991-2001. Additionally she created a sophisticated wine laboratory with well -trained staff and quality control procedures. In 2002, Bénédicte and her family moved to Fredericksburg, TX and created a Wine Laboratory to compliment her Wine Country Consulting business.  Bénédicte served sixteen years as the winemaker of Mesa Vineyards, St. Genevieve Wine in Fort Stockton, Texas. She the spent 10 years as the winemaker of Kuhlman Cellars, a quickly growing winery whose door's opened in October of 2014 in Hye, Texas to produce fine quality and “Terroir” driven wines from Texas in the style of her native Provence.  Bennie is now focused full time on her wine consulting and launching her own wine label - stay tuned!Show Sponsors:> The Magnolia in Fort Worth> The Texas Wine ClubDon't forget to FOLLOW, LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE and let us know any topics you'd like us to cover!Cheers! After we recorded this episode of Wine Talks, Mariam entered and won the very first Sommelier event ever held in Armenia. Congratulations. The fact they even had a sanctioned event such as this in Armenia will tell you how far the Armenian wine culture has progressed.  In this episode, you will hear from one passionate individual who saw a need and was willing to take a risk to find out if it even really existed. Ten years later and with a total of 1500 sku's in her store, I think we can safely say "yes" there was a need. Her tasting room, wine shop and Fromagerie was the first in Yerevan and continues to attract both wine intellects and wine novices to explore the burgeoning wine industry in Armenia.  With an impressive collection of French and Italian wines to compliment her exhaustive ensemble of Armenian wine, there is something for everyone. While there, I took part in my nephews networking event that I was privledged to help select the wines. Have a listen to a woman in wine is a big way.

The Sober Curious movement is gaining traction in this country which I am reminded of at the start of every year with all the Dry January posts. And if you need to reassess your relationship with alcohol, please, by all means. But on behalf of alcohol producers, I feel compelled to say a few words about how a neo-prohibition movement, no matter how small, must not negate the love, respect, and passion that cidermakers, winemakers, brewers, distillers, and fermenters in general have for the beverages they produce. These professionals have an avid dedication to the craft and they are very aware that it comes with great responsibility.References and Special Mentions:Inside the New Temperance Movement, This Naked Mind, Control Alcohol From Dry January to Fake Cocktails, Inside the New Temperance Movement, The Washington Post MagazineDry January ACA Temperance Movement Today in US: Neo-Prohibitionism, Alcohol Problems and SolutionsThank you to Tony Stuck for the awesome intro/outro music and to Mary Ann King for the amazing pod art that you see for every episode. It's been 20 years since Meagan Bishop and I said buh bye to high school and set off on our own separate courses. She actually jumped into sales and the alcohol industry much earlier than I did so while I am still in Virginia we are sitting down to discuss her journey through golf courses, tennis lessons, winery tasting rooms, and all that has led her to wine sales and distribution. She has the Irish gift of the gab and is here to share where that can take you and how her passion for wine has gotten her to where she is today.Special Mentions:Septenary, The Winery at Seven Oaks Farm Chateau Bell-Vue, LebanonGabriele Rausse Winery, Charlottesville, VAInternational CellarsThank you to Tony Stuck for the awesome intro/outro music and to Mary Ann King for the amazing pod art that you see for every episode.
