On this week's episode, we're joined by Thomas Dolby, musician, producer, inventor, storyteller, and one of the most inventive minds to emerge from the golden age of synth-pop. Best known for classics like “She Blinded Me With Science” and the groundbreaking album The Golden Age of Wireless, Dolby's career has taken him far beyond the world of 80s pop stardom. From building homemade synthesizers out of discarded circuit boards in South London, to performing with David Bowie at Live Aid, producing landmark records for Prefab Sprout, and later becoming a pioneer in music technology and Silicon Valley innovation, his story is one of constant reinvention. In this conversation, Thomas reflects on the grey, chaotic energy of 1970s London, the explosion of punk and electronic music, and how he carved out a sound that brought warmth and humanity to synthesisers at a time when electronic music often felt cold and mechanical. He shares hilarious stories including working with eccentric British scientist Magnus Pyke and explains how a global novelty hit unexpectedly opened the door to a deeper, more personal body of work. We also talk about busking in the Paris Metro, touring with bands like The Fall and Gang of Four, the pressure and excitement of performing at Live Aid with Bowie, and his belief that the best music comes from emotional honesty rather than chasing trends. Later in the episode, Thomas opens up about life beyond pop fame from launching tech companies during the dot-com boom, helping pioneer early mobile ringtone technology with Nokia and developing ambitious new live shows that blend music, storytelling, and orchestral performance.Let Christy Take It are proud to bring you Thomas Dolby. If you enjoy our show please like and subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts. In the early '80s, Thomas Dolby burst onto the pop music scene with his worldwide hit, She Blinded Me With Science. The song hailed from his debut album , The Golden Age of Wireless, and not only was it both musically and lyrically a brilliant pop song, the entire album was a masterful orchestration of synth programming that resulted in layered, lush soundscapes. Dolby masterfully shifted synth-pop from cold, mechanical textures to a warm, emotional, and highly narrative form, blending pioneering studio production with retro-futurist themes. On this new episode of Inside MusiCast, we chat with Dolby not only about his '80s album successes, but we'll discuss his thoughts about AI and its use in the music industry, his role as the creator and Director of the Music for New Media program at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, as well as his upcoming tours, including his Iconic ‘80s Recollections tour in the US and the UK, his Totally Tubular Festival that will feature his band The Lost Toy People and several other iconic '80s artists, as well as a surprise announcement about a future tour he's developing. We're truly honored to welcome one of the most innovative musicians and technologists over the past 40+ years, Thomas Dolby. Structurally, it's divided into four distinct suites: a set of pop songs, a galaxy-brained section centered on Elvis Presley (including the idea of his faked death and surprise return), a medley of love songs, and a final movement contemplating God, death, and redemption. On Jordan, McAloon fuses the accessible melodicism of The Beatles and The Beach Boys with the lyrical and musical intricacy of Steely Dan, all filtered through his own literary and theatrical sensibilities, to create a dreamy, atmospheric, forward-facing masterpiece that sounds like nothing else and holds great appeal to modern ears. Only $5 (USD) a month!https://www.patreon.com/posts/226-prefab-from-145775014In part three of the podcast's series exploring the work of the extraordinary UK band Prefab Sprout, I am joined by Atlanta-based critic and theatre scholar Brice Ezell to discuss the band's most commercially successful album: 1988's From Langley Park to Memphis.Following the critical acclaim of Steve McQueen, frontman Paddy McAloon aimed for a glossy, broadly commercial sound this time. With full label support, no expense was spared on production, a sweeping, cinematic soundscape that blends sophisticated synthesizers and polished studio techniques with full orchestration, gospel choirs, and even a guest appearance from Stevie Wonder.Heavily influenced by Barbra Streisand's The Broadway Album, McAloon goes full Theatre Kid on this record. The project employed multiple producers (including the returning Thomas Dolby) and experimented across genres from arena rock to Broadway show tunes and adult contemporary. This approach generated two enduring UK radio hits: “The King of Rock 'n' Roll” (their only Top Ten single) and “Cars and Girls” (a subtle critique of Bruce Springsteen's persona).Brice and I dive deep on Langley Park, offering track-by-track analysis. We explore the album's surprising global footprint, tracing its influence from Norwegian singer-songwriters to Japanese City Pop, anime scores, and video game music. And we zero in on the album's central theme: an epic statement where Paddy deconstructs the American mythmaking machine from the vantage point of Northeast England, all while processing his band's sudden success and grappling with an uncertain future. My thanks to the Sproutology website, the ultimate online resource for the band.Follow Brice Ezell on Bluesky. The King of Rock 'n' Roll - from the Dutch music show TopPop, 1988Nightingales - Paddy McAloon on piano, from KCRW, 1988Mashup of Prefab Sprout's Knock on Wood and a track from the Japanese anime High School Aura Buster.
In celebration of the deluxe edition of Foreigner's fourth album, 4, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Mick Jones broke into the music industry as a session musician while playing in multiple bands, including Spooky Tooth, he envisioned starting a new project for the songs he was writing. He recruited musicians Ian McDonald, Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood and Ed Gagliardi before turning his attention to finding the right lead singer for the band. After recalling meeting Lou Gramm when he was the singer of the Rochester, New York band Black Sheep, Jones asked Gramm to audition in New York City. Gramm was immediately hired and the lineup was complete. They signed a deal with Atlantic Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1977, which became a big success. Their second album, Double Vision, was released in 1978 and continued their run of hit singles. For their third album, Head Games, they clashed with producer Roy Thomas Baker and the album was not as successful as the first two. Rick Wills had taken over on bass at this point and after Head Games, they decided to let go of Ian McDonald and Al Greenwood to become a four-piece. They hired producer Mutt Lange and began recording at Electric Lady Studios. Foreigner 4 was eventually released in 1981. In this episode, Lou Gramm shares stories of growing up in Rochester, getting to see artists like Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, which went on to inspire his lyrics for “Jukebox Hero.” He describes this turning point moment for the band when they wanted to update their sound and image for the 1980s. By paring down to a four-piece and bringing in outside musicians like Thomas Dolby on synthesizers, they forged a new path forward for the band. With the help of producer Mutt Lange, they were able to focus on crafting a tight set of rock songs while exploring new sonic territory with songs like “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and “Urgent.” From long hours and late nights in the studio, to Mutt Lange's perfectionist tendencies, to Thomas Dolby's art rock approach, to Mick Jones falling in love with synthesizers, to spontaneously recruiting Junior Walker for a saxophone solo, to a mysterious muse in the studio while recording “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” to both Foreigner and Mutt Lange at the height of their powers, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.

The goal was to create a commercially appealing, modern pop record that still captured McAloon's idiosyncratic brilliance. The critically-acclaimed album was a modest hit in the UK but made little splash in America, where it was released as Two Wheels Good to avoid issues with Steve McQueen's estate.Forty years later, it is amazing how fresh this distinctly '80s album still sounds. It's a rich blend of rock, jazz, country, adult contemporary, and show tunes, finished with a beautiful electronic polish. Dolby's perfect production showcases McAloon's sophisticated songs about heartbreak and complicated feelings, alongside the masterful musicianship of the band, notably featuring the key arrival of drummer Neil Conti.During our track-by-track discussion, we reveal how we each got Sproutpilled, debate whether the band deserved the UK "Sophisti-Pop" label, explore their notable popularity in Italy, and share our hopes for a future Spike Lee Prefab Sprout movie musical.Follow Erin Vanderhoof on Bluesky and follow her work at Vanity Fair.My thanks to the Sproutology website, the ultimate online resource for the band."Thriller in England: Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout at 40" by Fergal Kinney, for The Quietus, June 10, 2025Live performance of When Love Breaks Down from The Old Grey Whistle Test, 1985Live performance of Goodbye Lucille #1 (aka Johnny Johnny), from The Tube, 1986Appetite from the 1986 Sanremo Music FestivalLondon in Love, from a series of Burberry 2025 adverts soundtracked by When Love Breaks Down.

What can you say about the great Thomas Dolby that hasn't already been said? We know about the hits (like "Science" and "Hyperactive"), we know about the innovation and the tech businesses he's started, and we know about Live Aid. In this conversation we set out to fill in some of the gaps like how did he get Jerry Garcia and Eddie Van Halen to play guitar with him? Did he ever meet Prince, who he is so similar to creatively? We know Howard the Duck didn't work, but what about his incredible soundtrack? What happened when he produced Joni Mitchell? It might be a slightly different conversation than you're used to. All of this is to promote his North American tour which kicks off on the east coast this week. Hope you enjoy hearing from the master! ThomasDolby.com The Hustle Podcast | creating podcasts | Patreon

In this episode Walter talks us through five songs that bring to mind his most interesting encounters, and along the way we learn about his childhood love of great pop composers, his brief residence at Burt Bacharach's Long Island motor lodge, the importance of having a “Cool Aunt” in the family, and what it was really like to work for Thomas Dolby.Walter's Selections:Dionne Warwick - "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" (1969)Claude Bolling & Jean-Pierre Rampal - "Baroque and Blue" (1975)Thomas Dolby - "Screen Kiss" (1984)Public Enemy - "Bring The Noise" (1988)Luscious Jackson - "Ladyfingers" (1999)Listen to our previous episode with Walter here
Mr. Christopher and Michael Bland sit down with music luminary Thomas Dolby. We talk about his breakout success in the 80's, From his side projects, his hits like Hyperactive and She Blinded Me With Science, chilling with Michael Jackson, friendships with XTC's Andy Partridge, working with Todd Rundgren, and so much more.
From the audio to the visual, we delve into the wondrous world of the album sleeve with Bill Smith, of Bill Smith Studios, responsible for some wonderful images in the 80s. 1. THE JAM (1977-1981) After getting his foot in the door at Polydor in the 70s, Bill has a breakthrough with The Jam. He is responsible for the artwork for all their albums up to and including Sound Affects as well as a number of single sleeves. More importantly, he has one shot at the iconic The Jam logo. RIP Rick. 2. THE CURE (1979-80)From mod to goth, Bill moves from the immediacy of The Jam to the more surreal, indie world of The Cure. Bill discusses working on their first three LP's. One a bit of an outlier in their back catalogue, the other more typical. But which household appliance WAS Robert Smith??3. GENESIS (1980-83) Another contrast, this time the prog-rockers entering their 80s pop period with some truly iconic sleeves for Duke, Abacab and Genesis. Fortuitious accidentslead to the iconic Abacab sleeve. AI won't/can't do that shit.Discussion moves onto discussing copyright and who owns the rights to artwork; the artist or the designer. Then talk on the general LP artwork package; sleeve, back sleeve, inner sleeve, disc labels, etc ending on why he didn't do the cover to Invisible Touch.4. THOMAS DOLBY (1981-82)A very special collaboration with former guest, Thomas Dolby, leads to uniquely brilliant artwork for The Golden Age of Wireless and related singles.5. NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC (1983)Nowt more iconic in the UK than the Now series and Bill was there from Vol 1.billsmithstudios.com80sography@gmail.comTwitter @80sographyBlue Sky @80sographySend us a text

The 'midierror meets...' interview series is back for Series 2 with Sonicstate, speaking to all kinds of people working in music and sound. He's also the man behind Hexstatic, known for his award winning audio/visual work, creating the world first visual album, and making 'Timber' - an era-defining music video highlighting the destruction caused by deforestation - and quite possibly the most remixed video of all time. He also has a lovely synth collection, including an ARP Quadra, Solina String Synth, and Thomas Dolby signed TB-303. https://www.holotronica.com/ https://stuartwarrenhill.com/ This is series 2, episode 1 and there are 50 previous episodes available now featuring Fatboy Slim, CJ Bolland, Andrew Huang, Tim Exile, High Contrast, Mylar Melodies, Infec

We also explore the allure of "9 Caronas" and discuss the remarkable range of Faith No More. Sean shares anecdotes about working in retail, highlighting artists that drove him crazy including Madonna, particularly during the release of her controversial SEX book. He recounts tales of trenchcoat-clad individuals and the risks associated with the release of American Psycho. Honorable mentions go to Hootie and the Blowfish and the classic "Don't Worry Be Happy."(39:28) Versus Time!1. Worst earworm: Which is the least unbearable?2. t took a few years, but Tom Bailey is finally reclaiming the wonderful legacy of the Thompson Twins. The excellent hit makers were everywhere in the 80s, but eventually Tom lost interest in pop music and moved on with then wife Alannah Currie to making dub and trance music under the names Babble and International Observer letting the Twins' flame die out. Thankfully, about 10 years ago he brushed off those old hits, put out a poppy solo album, and has been back in our lives since. He's now joining forced with Thomas Dolby and others on the Totally Tubular tour this summer. We get into all of it including working with Nile Rodgers and Rupert Hine, the late great Matthew Seligman, John uHughes movies, and the stories behind a bunch of songs. Enjoy! www.thompsontwinstombailey.co.uk www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
