Himani's project aims to raise awareness about the issue of female gendercide, which is the preference for a male child over a female child in patriarchal societies. She educates people about the consequences of this issue through gendercide awareness seminars and distributing brochures in India. Himani also partners with an organization called the Invisible Girl Project to rescue girls who are at high risk of being victims of female gendercide in India. Her project "Save the Girl Child" worked to raise awareness of female gendercide and promote gender equality through education and healthcare for underprivileged girls in Georgia and India. Himani partnered with over 40 global organizations to promote girl empowerment and is the Youth Brand Ambassador for the Invisible Girl Project working to end gendercide in India. She designed a science curriculum to empower refugee girls in Clarkston for future STEM careers, and has fundraised enough to set up five village schools with the Ekal Foundation and donated 36,000 books and educational supplies for girls in the Delhi slum districts. Himani was a Girl Scout Council Young Woman of Distinction and National Gold Award Scholarship recipient. She has been recognized as a Prudential Spirit of Community Distinguished Finalist, an honoree of the George W Bush Point of Light Awards, and is a two-time recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Himani's project, "Project Save the Girl Child," aims to raise awareness about this issue and its consequences on societies and populations. Himani's project was inspired by personal experiences, including being the second daughter in an Asian household and witnessing gender inequalities during her visits to India. She also drew inspiration from her grandmother, who was a doctor and emphasized the importance of education and support for her daughters. The cost of being a woman in the world can be deadly as we saw recently with the death of Mahsa Amini – a 22-year-old Iranian woman, detained by morality police for allegedly not wearing her hijab correctly. She died after falling into a coma while in police custody. It is the most recent case that has resurfaced the debate around gender equality everywhere. But as the protests in favour of gender rights continue - the silent death of millions of unborn girls worldwide including in Canada hasn't stopped either. It's called gendercide or sex-selective abortion. While there seem to be higher rates of gendercide in Asian countries - in 2020 Canadian MP Cathay Wagantall introduced a Sex-Selective abortion act (bill c-233) in the House of Commons It was a proposed law that would make it illegal for a doctor or practitioner to perform an abortion simply because of the sex of the child. It was voted down. While a recent report by Pew Research Centre states the ratio of baby girls to boys in some areas of India is starting to normalize slowly, many advocates ask at what cost? At the recent 2022 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), right-wing movement leaders couldn't stop whining about “pronouns.” For example, Texas Senator Ted Cruz said that his preferred pronouns are “kiss my ass,” and former Trump official Matt Schlapp complained that instead of carrying out his “duties” like dealing with the “open border,” President Biden is “talking about pronouns.” However, 2022 was not the first CPAC in which this particular part of speech caught heat; back in 2019, Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin began her remarks, “my pronouns are ‘U-S-A'!”Why do some conservatives attack and mock “pronouns”, and what exactly do they mean when they use the term? As our entry in the Big Rhetorical 2022 Podcast Carnival on “Spaces and Place In and Beyond the Academy”, this episode unpacks the history and politics of gendered personal pronouns such as “he” and “she,” genderless and non-binary pronouns (e.g. “they”), and various discourse practices in academic and activist circles that relate to personal pronoun usage. After analyzing some recent and relevant policy documents, Alex and Calvin explain the epistemic and ideological bases for “pronouns” as a negative ideograph–a one-word slogan encapsulating everything scary and “un-American” about the increasing tolerance of LGBTQ+ people in public life. “Pronouns,” we find, doesn't only index a debate over present-day gender expression; it also draws from the legacies of settler-colonialism and hyper-nationalism, which have always co-constituted hierarchies of race, class, gender, and sexuality in US society. However, we also note the ironic fact that strict use of gendered pronouns such as “he” and “she,” especially to refer to a generic person or non-human objects and entities, is historically recent and linguistically arbitrary.We conclude by shifting from history and theory to a question of action: what is the pragmatic case for putting your preferred pronouns in your social media bios and email signature lines, and giving students the opportunity to “share your name and pronouns” in classroom introductions? How do these practices make everyday learning and social action more feasible and manageable? Last week a report from Northern India revealed that out of 216 births in a specific district, none were girls. Clearly, though sex-selective abortion is illegal there, it is still common. There’s a global war on women taking place and it’s not just in India. China alone is responsible for over 400 million girls missing from the planet (more girls were not allowed to be born in China over the last 50 years than there are people in the United States!). 126 MILLION women & girls are "missing" (dead) from the world population due to severe discrimination and lack of basic human rights -- in other words due to social, man-made causes. That figure comes from the UN Population Fund. That's more deaths than World War I and World War II combined. It's 3.7% of the global female population -- a staggering loss. There is cause for hope. The fact that gendercide is a socially created, man-made problem means that it is a fixable problem. With this in mind, the Gendercide Awareness Project focuses on: 1) Raising awareness, particularly through our traveling art exhibit 2) Taking action by educating at-risk girls in developing countries. We believe that educating girls is the best long-term strategy for ending gendercide. With education and job skills, girls are transformed from economic burdens to economic assets, and they are better positioned to fight for equal rights.
