Today I am having a conversation with Richard Magnussen who last year released his memoir ‘Going Big: Lessons On Success In Business, Life And Faith.'From the early years growing up in an immigrant family and building a productive life in Kitchener to becoming one of Canada's big business success stories, Richard was able to remain focused on what was most important. His stories are worth hearing.Former Member of Parliament Harold Albrecht from Kitchener-Conestoga wrote on the flyleaf, “Richard's story is one of hard work, incredible perseverance, and deep faith in Jesus. Powerful evidence of the difference that Jesus makes in the life of a family. Great leadership principles based on the wisdom of God's Word!'

"Spirituality is like nuclear fission—it has the power to illuminate and energize but also to destroy when mishandled." — Dan Koch"Thriving isn't about a perfect life; it's about alignment between our deepest values and our lived reality." — Dan KochOn our path to spiritual health, we need to keep our eyes open to the ways religion and spirituality have been exploited to coerce, control, and create chaos. Focusing on the intersection of religion and psychology, licensed therapist, researcher, and podcaster Dan Koch is creating a public conversation about spiritual harm and abuse, helping victims learn how to deal with spiritual trauma, and offering insight and guidance toward healthy religious and spiritual experiences. From his own personal journey of religious trauma to his extensive research on spiritual abuse, Dan shares insights on how faith communities can both wound and restore. The conversation covers the psychological impact of religious trauma, the complexities of self-diagnosis, and practical strategies for self-knowledge and healing for anyone who has wrestled with faith, struggled with past church experiences, or have lost their religion. In this conversation with Dan Koch, we discuss:The psychological study of spiritual abuse and harm, including conceptual definitions and the many factors that come along with them. The symptoms and most recognizable patterns that point to spiritual abuseThe impact of abuse and trauma on psychological and spiritual healthHow to reappraise and challenge harmful core beliefsAnd how to find healing, joy, and transcendence as we deal with past trauma.Spirituality: Pro-Social Benefits, with a Shadow Side of Harm, Exploitation, and ViolenceThrough With & For, as well as the broader work of The Thrive Center, we regularly explore the expansive benefits and positives that emerge from our inherent spirituality as human beings, and how that relates to our individual and collective thriving.Religion and spirituality can be an immense force for good, offering countless pro-social benefits to the world, helping us our innate spiritual capacities is an essential factor in what it means to thrive. But we have to acknowledge the harm and vice and corruption—the violence— that has been perpetrated through religious and spiritual contexts. Spiritual abuse is a serious matter and there's no way we can cultivate a full understanding or integrated experience of healthy spirituality without coming to terms with its prevalence and effects.Dan Koch's attention to spiritual harm and abuse is about clearing the way toward a healthier spirituality grounded in care and healing. By exposing and exploring past traumas in the context of heathy and respectful relationships, we can grow into a more joyful faith and transcendent spiritual life.About Dan KochDan Koch is a licensed therapist supporting patients working through the trauma of spiritual abuse; and his work and insight in this domain emerges from his empirical research. He's also host of the You Have Permission podcast. With a background in philosophy and theology, he explores questions of faith, doubt, and spiritual well-being. This study of Genesis 24:42-67; Isaiah 12:3-14:2; and James 4:13-17 explores divine guidance through Abraham's journey of faith. The passages reveal God's sovereignty in human plans, emphasizing trust, humility and seeking Heaven's wisdom. Abraham in six ways shows how marriage is a sacred covenant requiring parental involvement, mutual respect, and spiritual alignment. We find true contentment by aligning our lives with God's eternal plan, rather than chasing fleeting worldly pursuits.

Michael has ran for Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington. Right now, his situation is a bit complicated, living in Salt Lake, but Michael is nonetheless making a huge mark in the sport, with personal bests of 8:14 in the 3000 meters and 14:36 in the 5000 meters. Before Gonzaga, he had a remarkable high school career, including a 12th place finish at the Eastbay National Cross Country Championships and, 2nd at the Brooks PR 3200. Michael also holds a special passion for mountain running, having competed for Team USA in the Mountain Running World Championships twice, in Thailand and Australia. But today is about much more than the times. Michael and I delve into many of the deeper lessons and aspects of life that running is very much connected to: the importance of embracing both good and bad days, how spirituality, his connection with God, and running interconnect for him. Michael also touches on his goals and the broader role of running in life. Whether you are in middle school, high school, college, or a recreational runner, this episode is for you. So many valuable insights. This episode is pure gold and I know that you will enjoy it just as much as I did. Please consider leaving a follow and a five-star review! I hope you all enjoy this episode of The Sunday Shakeout!

It's common to feel overwhelmed by the world's problems and wonder if one person can make a difference. Balancing success, family needs, and personal well-being adds to this burden. Many people face this challenge, trying to manage their responsibilities while still pursuing their goals. Despite these struggles, finding small ways to contribute and make a positive impact can bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Victor Marx is a former Marine turned humanitarian powerhouse, uniquely equipped to tackle the world's toughest challenges. Overcoming a traumatic childhood, he now mentors young men and rescues victims from war-torn areas. Marx's expertise lies in transforming pain into purpose, offering hope to the hopeless. With a best-selling book and a global following, Marx teaches the art of being "mission ready" - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Today, he shares his journey from a traumatic childhood to becoming a force for hope and change in the world. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “Rules without relationship create chaos, but a relationship without rules creates the same problem.” – Victor Marx “Unforgiveness is like drinking poison, and hoping it kills the person you hate. But all it does is destroy you inside.” – Victor Marx “Forgiveness is giving up your right to hurt someone back for hurting you.” – Victor Marx “There's good men and there's men that are good at being men.” – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Ask yourself, "Am I still mission ready for whatever God has for me to do?" Consider your physical, emotional, and spiritual preparedness. Identify someone you need to forgive and consciously choose to let go of your right to hurt them back. Journal about how this impacts your emotional well-being. Establish a consistent routine, such as listening to a Bible app or spending quiet time in prayer, to strengthen your spiritual foundation. Assess how you prioritize your family versus your career. Plan a specific action to show your loved ones they come first, even if it means sacrificing a professional opportunity. Start a daily gratitude practice, focusing on the basics you have in life. Use this to combat negative attitudes and maintain perspective during challenging times. Conclusion: The importance of mentorship and providing hope to younger generations cannot be overstated, especially for those who have experienced trauma or adversity. Forgiveness, both of others and oneself, is crucial for personal growth and healing, allowing individuals to move forward and fulfill their potential. Consistency in spiritual practices, maintaining physical and emotional readiness, and finding balance between work and family life are key elements in becoming an effective leader and making a positive impact on the world.

Episode Summary:Interviewing Jonathan Merritt felt like having a conversation with myself. His journey out of white evangelical subculture is an almost mirror-image of my journey. My guess is, you'll find a lot of correlation as well. Jonathan was a card-carrying evangelical who left his Southern roots and evangelical home to find faith, family, and freedom outside the confines and cult-like community of evangelical Christianity. His journey led him from certainty to contemplation, from winning to wisdom, from the shallow end of the pool into the deep waters of Ignatian spirituality, and from exclusion to radical inclusion. As he reminds us, evangelical Christianity is not only a fairly modern invention, it is also a minority movement within global Christianity. Evangelicals do not have a monopoly on God. There are a myriad of spiritual pathways available to you once you leave. So take heart, there is life after evangelicalism. There is faith after evangelicalism. There is new found family after evangelicalism. You get to decide what your future is going to look like. You have the power to form a freer faith and a more inclusive “family.” Four years and seventy-four episodes into Holy Heretics Podcast and I can honestly say I believe this conversation with Jonathan Merritt to be the most helpful and hopeful episode we've ever created. I hope you enjoy!Bio:Jonathan Merritt is one of America's most popular writers on issues of faith and culture. He is author of several critically-acclaimed books, including Learning to Speak God from Scratch: Why Sacred Words are Vanishing - and How We Can Revive Them, named “Book of the Year” by the Englewood Review of Books. Jonathan is an award-winning contributor for The Atlantic, a contributing editor for The Week, and a regular columnist for Religion News Service. He has published more than 3000 articles in respected outlets such as The New York Times, USA Today, Buzzfeed, The Washington Post, The Daily Beast and Christianity Today. In addition to the written word, Jonathan regularly contributes commentary to television, print, and radio news outlets. He has been interviewed by ABC World News, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, NPR, PBS, and CBS' “60 Minutes.” Jonathan is also a sought after speaker at colleges, conferences, and churches on topics relating to spirituality, politics, and current events. Whether he is delivering an academic lecture or inspirational sermon, Jonathan's captivating communication style and powerful presence are well-suited for intimate gatherings of hundreds or arenas filled with thousands. As a collaborator or ghostwriter, Jonathan has worked on more than 50 books, with several titles landing on the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestsellers lists. Additionally, he trains hundreds of young writers through his Write Brilliant seminars and online course. In recent years, Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon has developed a reputation as one of Major League Baseball's most private and elusive players. This week, he opens up in an exclusive, 70-minute conversation on the Jack Vita Show! Rendon sits down with Jack for a rich discussion about baseball, life off the field, and his Christian faith. After leading the National League in RBI, finishing third in NL MVP voting and helping the Washington Nationals win their first World Series in franchise history in 2019, Rendon signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. We check in with Rendon after rounding out his fourth season with the team. Marred by injuries, Rendon has played just 148 total games over the last three seasons, combined. Rendon provides an update on his health and medical status, one month out from the start of spring training. Rendon talks offseason and life off the field. What is a day in the life like for Anthony Rendon in the offseason? How is he enjoying fatherhood, and how difficult is it for him to be away from his family when he's traveling during the season? Rendon discusses his love for hunting and playing golf. Rendon reflects on his time with the Nationals. Prior to 2019, the Nats had never won a playoff series. That fall, the club won the World Series, despite getting off to a dismal 19-31 start to open the regular season. Rendon shares the secrets to the 2019 Nationals' success, detailing what made that team different from previous Nationals teams that may have had more talent, but ultimately came up short in October. The Angels have had an eventful offseason. The club bid farewell to two-time American League MVP Shohei Ohtani, who signed a ten-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last month. In November, the Angels hired Ron Washington to be their next manager, replacing Phil Nevin. Did Rendon think Ohtani was coming back, and has he spoken with Wash yet? Rendon also discusses what it has been like to play with Ohtani and Mike Trout. Later, Rendon opens up about his Christian faith and shares how Jesus Christ has changed his life. Rendon shares his incredible testimony. When he was a young player on the Nationals, a group of Nats veterans helped disciple him and encouraged him to grow in his relationship with Christ. Now, he has taken on a similar role as a veteran in the Angels clubhouse. Rendon talks about what role faith plays in the Angels' locker room. All this, and much more!
