(Leviticus 11:44,45) 44 For I am the Lord your God; so consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am holy; neither defile yourselves with any manner of thing that multiplies in large numbers or swarms. 45 For I am the Lord Who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God; therefore you shall be holy, for I am holy. Galatians 5:22 22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,   To grief the Holy Spirit Ephesians 4:30 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God's own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).   Gifts of the Holy Spirit Acts 2:2 2 When suddenly there came a sound from heaven like the rushing of a violent tempest blast, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting. 1 Corinthians 12:4-12 4 Now there are distinctive varieties and distributions of endowments (gifts, extraordinary powers distinguishing certain Christians, due to the power of divine grace operating in their souls by the Holy Spirit) and they vary, but the [Holy] Spirit remains the same. 5 And there are distinctive varieties of service and ministration, but it is the same Lord [Who is served]. 6 And there are distinctive varieties of operation [of working to accomplish things], but it is the same God Who inspires and energizes them all in all. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the [Holy] Spirit [the evidence, the spiritual illumination of the Spirit] for good and profit. 8 To one is given in and through the [Holy] Spirit [the power to speak] a message of wisdom, and to another [the power to express] a word of knowledge and understanding according to the same [Holy] Spirit; 9 To another [wonder-working] faith by the same [Holy] Spirit, to another the extraordinary powers of healing by the one Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles, to another prophetic insight (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose); to another the ability to discern and distinguish between [the utterances of true] spirits [and false ones], to another various kinds of [unknown] tongues, to another the ability to interpret [such] tongues. 11 All these [gifts, achievements, abilities] are inspired and brought to pass by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, Who apportions to each person individually [exactly] as He chooses. 12 For just as the body is a unity and yet has many parts, and all the parts, though many, form [only] one body, so it is with Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). Romans 12:6-8 6 Having gifts (faculties, talents, qualities) that differ according to the grace given us, let us use them: [He whose gift is] prophecy, [let him prophesy] according to the proportion of his faith; 7 [He whose gift is] practical service, let him give himself to serving; he who teaches, to his teaching; 8 He who exhorts (encourages), to his exhortation; he who contributes, let him do it in simplicity and liberality; he who gives aid and superintends, with zeal and singleness of mind; he who does acts of mercy, with genuine cheerfulness and joyful eagerness. Ephesians  4:11 11 And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers. 1 Peter 4:10-11 10 As each of you has received a gift (a particular spiritual talent, a gracious divine endowment), employ it for one another as [befits] good trustees of God's many-sided grace [faithful stewards of the [a]extremely diverse powers and gifts granted to Christians by unmerited favor]. 11 Whoever speaks, [let him do it as one who utters] oracles of God; whoever renders service, [let him do it] as with the strength which God furnishes [b]abundantly, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ (the Messiah). To Him be the glory and dominion forever and ever (through endless ages). Amen (so be it). To quench the holy Spirit 1 Thessalonians 5:19 19 Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit; Allow the Abundance of God Luke 6:45 45 The upright (honorable, intrinsically good) man out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart produces what is upright (honorable and intrinsically good), and the evil man out of the evil storehouse brings forth that which is depraved (wicked and intrinsically evil); for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart his mouth speaks.

Grace and peace to you. I'm Rev. Joe Cailles, the pastor of Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Virginia. Today is Wednesday, June 14, 2023. Through the month of June, I'm posting my reflections on the scripture lessons for Sunday's worship services. We're reading from Genesis this month and following the family of Abraham and Sarah, and their descendants, and I'm using a wonderful translation of Genesis created by Dr. Everett Fox, who is a Professor of Judaic and Biblical Studies at Clark University in Massachusetts. Dr. Fox's translation uses the Hebrew names for Abraham and Sarah, Avraham and Sara, and captures the rhythms of the Hebrew Language. Adonai said to Avram, Go-you-forth from your land, from your kindred, from your father's house to the land that I will let you see. I will make a great nation of you and will give-you-blessing and will make your name great. Be a blessing! We heard that passage from Geneses chapter 12, last Sunday in worship. God calls Avram and Sarai to go to a new land so that God can give them descendants who will be a blessing to all the clans of the soil, to all the people of the earth. This is surprising news for Avram and Sarai, because they have no children and they are well past their childbearing and child raising years, but off they go to be blessed and to be a blessing. As I said last Sunday in the sermon, we today, who are among the spiritual descendants of Avram and Sarai, are to be a blessing to all the clans of the soil as well. We who follow Jesus are meant be a blessing to all the world around us. Sometimes we get that right. Sometimes we get that so wrong. For Avram and Sarai, almost immediately they question God and make all sorts of bad decisions. Each time God reiterates that God will give them descendants they question and hem and haw and at one point Sarai even laughs in the face of God, such is her disbelief. I like that part. I like questions and pushback and laughing at God. That's how we learn and grow in our faith. That's how we grow and learn more about God. Ask questions! Seek better answers than what I give you or what the church gives you. Seek better answers from what the world gives you. Avram and Sarai do make a huge mistake though. They decide that since Sarai is too old to bear a child, they will have Avram have a baby with Hagar, Sarai's maid. That's not what God wants to happen, and it's not clear how Hagar feels about the situation. It does not go well. Hagar and Avram have a son together, Ishmael, but the household is not happy and Avram and Sarai banish Hagar and Ishmael. Hagar despairs that she and her son will die but God hears them, and God provides for them. Hagar and Ishmael survive and find a home for themselves, and Ishmael becomes the father of his own people. The Muslim people today claim Ishmael as their ancestor. God makes a way even when we mess things up. In Genesis Avram and Sarai become Avraham and Sara, Abraham and Sara, and God does make good on the promise. They have a son named Yitzhak, Isaac, which means, One who laughs and rejoices. Sara laughed at God. Now God and Sara and Avram laugh and rejoice at the newborn baby. I love the idea that God laughs with us, that God delights in our delight and shares our joy. The joy and delight do not last. What comes next for Avraham and Sara and Yitzhak is a trial, a test of their faith which is brutal and life changing for them. This week we conclude the series on the baggage that we carry that can interfere with our relationship with God and each other. Our scripture in focus is Geneses 37:2-11.

Ways to Take Your Thoughts Captive If you don’t learn to control your thoughts, you will never learn how to control your behaviour. (Behaviour reveals the thoughts.) Pastor George Lehman What is taking your thoughts captive? Taking your thoughts captive simply means gaining control over what you think about yourself and life.  What you put in your mind has an effect on what you think and how you act. Remember those scary movies you watched as a kid, then had nightmares? It didn't take long to realize that the way to avoid the nightmares was to stop watching those kind of movies. God has provided a way to overcome unhealthy thoughts and behaviours and gain the self-control you seek. It's a matter of taking charge of your life - His way. 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us that we are to "demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." Here are 6 ways to take your thoughts captive: Accept responsibility for your thoughts.(Don’t nurse them or rehearse them.) You have the ability to exercise control over your thoughts. Geneses 4:7 (NIV) – “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” God warned Cain to focus his mind on the right things, but Cain chose to think about the wrong things - anger and jealousy - which led to his murderous actions. - He never took his thoughts captive. Are you willing to admit that you can, with God's help, regain control of your thoughts - and think enabling thoughts instead of disabling ones? Your mind - not just your behaviour - must change. (You can’t keep pulling off the bad fruit; you must change the root) God calls us to change sinful behaviour that does not honour Him. Instead of focusing on your outward behaviour, work on disciplining your mind - from which the behaviours stem. Allow God to transform you by the renewing of your mind Romans 12:2 (NIV) – Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-His good, pleasing, and perfect will.   When your thoughts change your behaviour will change Think through your problems rather than just reacting to them. Proverbs 4:23-25 (NIV) – 23Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. 24Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. 25Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. When you experience difficult challenges, you can react to them and think yourself into despair every time. Or you can look forward to the next opportunity and ask yourself what you learned from this failure. Is your first thought; “I'll never do anything right?” “I’m a failure!” You don't have to get trapped by disabling thoughts. You are capable of getting out of your shame, despair, hopelessness, and anger - by taking control of your thoughts. Confront your disabling thoughts. Turn them over to God and become who He sees you can be. It will take work to take your thoughts captive each time they pop into your mind. But it is possible with the help of the Holy Spirit. Choose to focus your thoughts on the right things. We are to think about what the word of God says we must do: Philippians 4:8-9 (MSG) – 8-9Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into His most excellent harmonies. Romans 8:28 (NIV) – And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. When we think about those things, God promises to give us His peace. What a contrast that is to the thoughts of millions of people today. It takes personal discipline and commitment. It is possible – to take your thoughts captive It is not easy to retrain your thoughts or to respond in new Christ-like ways. BUT Take heart: as God empowers you to focus your mind on the right things, it will become easier. You can develop a new frame of reference, based on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. (If it is not – Let it go!) It is possible to live a life aware of our thoughts and taking them captive! God gave us the Holy Spirit to empower us. Start following these steps today to gain power over your mind and thoughts. Only you can decide right now: I will start taking my thoughts captive.

Relationships. Can't live with them, can't live without them. This week's song, "Brother" by NeedToBreathe, leads us to discover some of the brother relationships in the Bible. Just like in the band, these relationships are not always smooth sailing. There is, however, a wonderful example of two "spiritual brothers" that is worth looking into. Geneses 6-8,  CORRECTIONS: It was stated the animals entered the ark 2 by 2 but the clean animals entered 7 by 7 and the unclean entered 2 by 2.  The scripture does not actually say it had never rained. Hebrews 11:7 " . . . being warned of God of things not seen as yet . . ." and some say the warning speaks of the rain, others the flood, and the judgment itself. However we know that it did not rain before man was formed according to Genesis 2:5-7 the earth was watered by a midst and after God planted the garden it was watered by a river in verse 10 ". . . a river went out of Eden and watered the garden . . ." There is no mention of rain until the warning in chapter 7:4. We're made lower than angels. Psalm 8:4-5 .
